zine

I decided to make a zine in order to display my final images from my Anthropocene project. I used Adobe InDesign software to create the layout and sizes for my images. My zine will have 16 pages that will display my photos which will in turn show a story of Anthropocene in jersey.

I began with a blank template with 16 pages where i went on to place my best images from both of my La Collette photoshoots.

My Zine first attempt

This was my first attempt of creating my zine in Adobe InDesign. During this zine i have selected all my best images from both my La Collette photoshoots. However I felt that the sequence of the images were not very good. this is because i would have the same page layout multiple times in a row as well as using poor images for the front and back cover of the Zine. For these reasons I rearranged the images and pages into a way where the pictures compliment each other better and the covers look more professional.

Final Zine

I feel that this zine is a lot better than my first attempt. This is because firstly I have added a more bold prominent title that can be seen better on the black and white background. Additionally the new black and white front and back covers give the zine more more aesthetic. The variety of page layouts throughout the book have made the zine much nicer to view rather than having loads of full page images all together.

La COLLETTE PHOTOSHOOT 2

For my second photoshoot at AAL’s recycling facility at La Collette i focused more on the materials rather than the machinery however i did manage to capture a few images of machinery at work. Due to the time of day i attended the facility most workers had finished for the day which was a benefit as i did not have to worry about people obstructing the rest of the image. Additionally, the wash plant had been working all day which meant that all of the material storage areas were very full which was an added bonus to my photoshoot.

First I went through all pictures from my second photoshoot and used the flags to filter the images into group that would and wouldn’t be used.

Next I rated each image 3, 4 or 5 stars and only used the images rated 5 stars to ensure i had the best photos possible.

Lastly, i colour coded the images. The green images are the ones that i believe are the nest from the entire shoot and the red images are my secondary photos that i could use if i need to.

Evaluation

Overall i feel this photoshoot went well however i do feel that the first photoshoot was of higher quality. I think that this is because of the time difference. On my first shoot i had plenty of time to really think about my photos and set myself up in positions that would help the outcome look professional whereas the site was closing soon after i arrived on the second shoot therefore i had to rush. Additionally, the weather was not as nice on the second shoot therefore the lighting was not what it could have been.

La collette photoshoot 1

This was my first photoshoot of my Anthropocene project. I went to AAl’s recycling centre at la Collette in order to photoshoot his new wash plant that is used to clean waste materials from demolition sites and make it a useable material that is sold off to other companies and private projects.

I followed my photoshoot plan and managed to get many photos in the short time i was granted access.

I went through all my images from my La Collette photoshoot 1 and selected any pictures that i believe had potential.

Next i used the rating tool in order to narrow my images down even more in order to distinguish images that can be my finals. i used 3, 4 and 5 stars. I only selected images rated 4 or 5 stars to continue in the selection proses.

My next method of image selection was using colour coding to see which images are the best. Red is the images that will not make the final cut, yellow is the images that i will keep available incase i do decide to use them and green are the images that i am going to develop into my final images.

After consideration of my highly rated pictures i have decided that these 9 images will be my final images for this photoshoot.

Final Images

For all of my Final Images i have increased the texture and the clarity. I feel that this gives the effect of industrialisation and shows the industry that these machines are working in as well as what they are creating.

Black and White

I also developed each of my best images in black and white in order to provide some more contrast between the colours. However i still believe that the images in colour look better.

Evaluation

Overall I am very happy with my first shoot. I was lucky to get the opportunity to photograph this private facility. I was given a tour of the wash plant that allowed me to get to all areas of the plant however many of these images did not work out. This was due to the images of the inner workings of the machine meaning very little without the context of the rest of the machine and wouldn’t mean anything to a viewer who had not seen the entire machine at work. However images taken outside of components that are clearly recognisable such as the diggers that load or the conveyor belt came out as some really nice images.

Photoshoot plan

Photoshoot 1

My first photoshoot is to be taken at la Collette inside of AAL’s recycling facility. The company has recently invested in a modern machine that is capable of washing and sorting any material fed into it. This machine is revolutionary as is allows all rubbish material to be recycled and re-used for new projects. I have been granted access to the wash plant and have arranged to be shown around the facility which should allow me to properly demonstrate how the plant recycles the material and how it is helping jersey to progress on its journey to becoming more eco friendly.

What?AAL’s new wash plant at La Collette
Where?AAL’s facility at La Collette
When?Mid afternoon to give a nice amount of light and shadow
Why?to show Anthropocene on jersey
How?By contacting my connections to gain access to the facility

Photoshoot 2

For my second photoshoot for my Anthropocene project i will go to Ronez quarry in St johns in order to photoshoot the effect that mining has had on our island. Due to the facility being private i will not be able to get access into the quarry itself however using the headlands on either side of the quarry i will be able to easily see deep into the operation.

What?Photographing ronez quarry.
Where?Ronez Quarry
When?Mid afternoon for good lighting
Why?To show Anthropocene in jersey
How?Stand on the headlands either side of the quarry so i can see

Artist Study

Edward Burtynsky

Ed Burtynsky is a Canadian Photographer who was born in February 1955. he was originally known for his large format urban landscapes. His work shows the rapid industrialisation of out world and humans impact on the planet. `

Burtynsky is an advocate for environmental conservationism and his work is deeply entwined in his advocacy. His work comments on the scars left by industrial capitalism while establishing an aesthetic for environmental devastation, the sublime-horrors discussed in a number of essays on the topic of his work. He sits on the board of Contact, Toronto’s international festival of photography.

“Most of Burtynsky’s exhibited photography (pre 2007) was taken with a , large format Field Camera, on large 4×5-inch sheet film and developed into high-resolution, large-dimension prints of various sizes and editions ranging from 18 × 22 inches to 60 × 80 inches” – Wiki

Image Analysis

This image by Edward Burtynsky was taken using a drone. this method of photography gives a wider view in order to show the true Anthropocene that the human race has brought upon itself. In my opinion this image demonstrates Anthropocene better than many other images by the artist. However i feel that it also shows the true scale of the worlds over population which really brings to light how the human race has past the point of no return and can never truly return the planet to its original and healthy state. Relating to the overpopulation of the planet the planet is also forced to industrialise in order to accommodate the population growth with jobs and housing.

Anthropocene

The Anthropocene Epoch is an unofficial unit of geologic time, used to describe the most recent period in Earth’s history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems

Urban Landscapes

For my urban landscapes project I went on a photoshoot around Halve Des Pas and La Collette. I took around 250 images that documented the urban landscape in that area.

When viewing my images i selected these images as I believe they had the most potential to be good images once developed.

I have developed each of my best images in colour as well as black and white. This gives two very different perspectives of the same area. The black and white images relate the the new topographics and the colour images show off the time period that we live in.

The new topographics

What was the purpose of New Topographics?

“A turning point in the history of photography, the 1975 exhibition New Topographic signalled a radical shift away from traditional depictions of landscape.”

Robert Adams

Robert Adams | Photography and Biography

Robert Adams is an 84 year old photographer who has spent many years of his life documenting the damage that humans have done to the American west. Adams grew up in New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Colorado. research suggests that Adams was very fond of the outdoors and has a very close relationship with his father. When he was 25 Adams was a collage English teacher. this meant that during his long summer holidays he had a lot of time to spend outdoors and this is when he discovered photography. During the 1970s and 1980s he produced a number of books that highlighted the suburbs of Colorado. Robert Adams focused mainly on the mixture of the natural world and the influence that humans have had upon the natural landscape.

Romanticism

“Romanticism, attitude or intellectual orientation that characterized many works of literature, painting, music, architecture, criticism, and historiography in Western civilization over a period from the late 18th to the mid-19th century.”

Romanticism in in landscape photography and art is a style that rejects classical aspects of an image and emphasises the other aspects. For example the nature and the emotion. This is shown in the deep colours of the foliage and the colour contrast between each item of the photo. Additionally, most images of this style often have a haze or tone over them which i think gives them a more old fashion style. This is also due to the style being popularised in the mid twentieth century around 1950 – 1960. This was after the popularisation of colour photography rather than black and white. In Romanticism landscapes the colours are often phased and blended together which reduces the sharpness of the contrast and colour changes. this provides a softer image to look at which therefore makes the image more relaxing to look at and gives a calmer feel. Romanticism can be seen in many different subjects of all different styles. For example poetry and art. Romanticism in art follows very similar patterns as the style in photography.
