Photo Zine Research

A photography zine, for example, is a tool that photographers can use to tell a visual story, to inform an audience about a specific topic or issue, to showcase and advertise a new idea or simply create a preview of an ongoing project. – Google

Examples of Photo Zines

Photo zines are a method photographers use to convey information to their viewers in a simple and easy to understand way. They can me constructed with photographs and typography or just photographs. Personally i think that photo zines without writing make a more interesting zine as more is left to the imagination of the viewer.

There are many ways to create a photo zine however the most efficient way is using Adobe InDesign. The software makes it very simple to construct the zine while still having almost every feature a professional photographer would need.

There are many aspects required to make a zine a quality product that people want to look at. The front cover is the most important part as it must be designed to grab the viewers attention. this means it must have the best image displayed to cover the whole front page. There are multiple ways to lay out the images within the zine. Firstly where is a double page spread there the image will cover both pages going all the way to the corners. This is where the photographer would place their best images as it shows off the detail and colour the best. Second is a sing page spread, this is where the photographer would place one image covering just one page of the zine. this means that two images will be next to each other which means the designer must ensure that they go together well and do not contrast too much. Lastly is a framed image. this is when the photographer makes the images smaller than the page so that a boarder whichever colour the print paper will be will appear around the edge. This can show some of the best details in an image as the colours in the photo can be made to contrast the boarder.

East Coast Zine

3 words – LaHocq to Greenisland

A sentence – The journey from La Hocq to green Island along the coast

A paragraph – My zine is going to show the journey along the beach and around the headland from La Hocq to Green Island. I am going to achieve this by having the images in my zine in the order they were taken on our Field Trip to La Motte.

Creating My Zine

My Zine

Evaluation

Overall i am very happy with my zine. I thought that it had a good diversity between style and size of images. For example the spread between Black and White in addition to colour images. As well as the different layouts such as double page spreads and bordered images. Some thing i think i could have improved on is adding some writing to the images to give them more meaning.

East Coast Photoshoot

On my photoshoot at Green island I got around 200 images. After looking trough and comparing my images i separated the photos i thought were the best.

After getting the 63 images i thought had potential to be good images i developed them to the highest quality i could using Adobe Lightroom Classic. After the images were developed i then sorted them again in order to pick the ones with the most potential.

After Collecting my final images i experimented with the images in black and white. This gives a different perspective of the same photos.

I find that this image in black and white fails to show the true gloom of the weather the day the photo was taken however the contrast is higher in the rocks in the foreground

This image does not work in Black and White. The pattern in the centre rock can not be seen well enough and as this is the focal point of the photograph it does not work very well. To try and correct this issue i tried to increase the contrast in develop mode of Lightroom classic however this did not work. I find that the colour image is better due to the colours of the graffiti. As it is not natural and looks a bit out of place i think that the image has a heavy contrast about it which i really like.

Final Images

After comparing very image with its Black and White counterpart i decided which image I thought looked best. The green images are the ones that I am going to use in my zine and the red ones are the ones i will discard.

Still life

Still life photography is a style of photography where an array of objects that either compliment or contrast each other are arranged in a way that makes the objects which are often quite simple seem very interesting. Still life images originated in the 17th century when still life images were painted. These paintings were often of common household products of upper class people including fruits and glass object such as bowls and vases that would only be found in upper class houses.

Mary Ellen Bartley

Mary Ellen Bartley is a still life photographer who focuses on photographing printed matter such as books and pages. Her unique style is very interesting as she takes objects that are so simple and makes them into very unique structures and photographs. Bartley works in collaboration with many major libraries and archives in New York City where she works to develop projects on specific aspects of their collections. for example The Queens Museum working with Andrew Beccone’s Reanimation Library..

David Hockney: Joiner Photographs | Kanopy

This is one of Hockney’s most famous images. it shows an elderly couple solving a crossword puzzle however Hockney has managed to achieve something in this image that is very rare, and that is the image of time. usually images only portray a simple one frame scene but in this image due to hockey’s unique joiner style he has shown multiple stages of the image that he being captured. this can be seen in the facial expressions of the models as well as the hand placement. Due to the images clearly being made up of many image many viewpoints are shown. This image seems to have natural lighting which shows that Hockney wanted this image is seem as natural as possible. However the clothing is the models seems rather formal which implies that they could be passing time before they head out.

Photo Joiner

This is my first joiner image in the style of David Hockney. When selecting my images i tried mixing black and white with colour images which i think turned out really interesting. Additionally by having the people in the foreground the image is given a true size of scale.

Experimentation

Evaluation and Critique

Overall i believe that this project based on Anthropocene vent well. I was very lucking to get the photoshoot opportunities that i did. The sites i got to visit gave me some very high quality photographs that came out amazing after some development. During this project i feel i could have done better in some areas. The first of these was the amount of images i took. Due to the photoshoots being on a working site my time was heavily limited. As a result of this I did not have the time to think deeply about all of my images which it turn meant that many of my images came out blurred or just not very interesting. However, I did manage to get a few great shots on both shoot that i am really proud of. During the image development stage i enjoyed using a specific style of editing that made my images look very industrial which is what i was aiming for and i am happy with the way they turned out. During the developing of my images i spent time on blog posts that explained my processes. One of my final pieces to display my work was a zine. I really enjoyed making the zine and i feel that it went really well and came out as a very high quality piece of work. The zine was compiled of my best images from both shoots. The images were displayed in different styles and sequences throughout the booklet which give the booklet some variety and makes it more intriguing. I am going to have a few of my best images printed and i am going to mount them on foamboard and mountboard which i think will make them look really nice.

Photo Gallery / Final Outcomes

I used Artsteps to create some virtual galleries to exabit my best images from my Anthropocene project. The Artsteps software allows the user to download pre made 3D virtual Galleries that the user can the import their photos into and place them wherever they wish.

Additionally i used Adobe Photoshop to display some of my images. I created white backgrounds and placed my images on them. This not only displayed my images virtually but allowed be to experiment on how to mount my images after they have been printed.
