Brno Del Zou:

Brno Del Zou is a musician, photographer, sculptor, videographer, software designer, creator of video / sound / interactive installations.

Brno Del Zou

Brno Del Zou has a beautiful series of photography based portraits. In these works, he explores many different perspectives while displaying them all on one plane of vision. He sees his work as an exploration of cubism. The result is a complex “collage” displaying the many facets of an individual.

He creates this images by distorting them with many layers, all taken in different scales and angles to represent the ‘chaotic side of our minds’.

identity

Identity – the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

A photograph resembles the likeness of what appeared before the lens. So, in the case of a profile picture, family album or mug shot, identity is based on the repetition of sameness that is evidenced by the image produced by the camera. Typical ways of expressing our identity include our choice of hairstyles, clothing, and make-up through to marks on our bodies including paint, tattoos, scars and piercings. Other aspects of identity such as language, race, ethnicity, religion and occupation are also powerful markers of cultural identity.

Gender identity – an individual’s personal sense of having a particular gender.

Cultural identity – cultural identity refers to identification with, or sense of belonging to, a particular group based on various cultural categories, including nationality, ethnicity, race, gender, and religion

Social identity – social identity is the portion of an individual’s self-concept derived from perceived membership in a relevant social group.

Geographical identity – an individual or group’s sense of attachment to the country, region, city, or village in which they live.

Political identity – is a political approach wherein people of a particular gender, religion, race, social background, social class or other identifying factors, develop political agendas that are based upon these identities.

headshots close up

A headshot is a tightly cropped photo of the face, from the shoulders up. The subject is camera aware — typically looking right in the lens. Years ago, headshots were reserved for actors and models. In today’s socially connected world, a modern headshot comes in handy for anyone looking to market themselves professionally.

Right from childhood, Gilden has always been fascinated by the life on the streets and the complicated and fascinating motion it involves, and this was the spark that inspired his first long-term personal projects, photographing in Coney Island and then during Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

Contact Sheets

I have done one main photoshoot which some images have already been edited. For these photos we took them from many different angles and different styles.

Editing

For most of my photos, I only changed them to black and white and then slightly adjusted some other elements to improve the edit.

photo grid/sequence

Sequence/Grid

A photo grid is a collection of photos that are positioned vertically and horizontally to make one overall shape, usually a square or rectangle.

A photo sequence is a group of photographs that go in a specific order to tell a story. Probably most popularly used by Duane Michals, the photo sequence can be a strong tool in communicating actions that happen over time in a still photograph.

My photo grid:

In order to create this photo grid, I chose a set of 9 images that I took in Grouville and placed them onto a dark grey background. I cropped a few of them down to fit nicely into the grid. I used to lightroom to edit all 9 images to make them seem black and white other than the orange pumpkins which I made stand out.

photo montage

A photo montage is a combination of several photographs joined together for artistic effect or to show more of the subject than can be shown in a single photograph.

What makes a good photo montage?

Photomontages are similar to cubism. There are no bounds of perspective or time. You can create a single artwork using several images of the same or many subjects. Doing this in a cohesive manner gives exciting results.

My photo montage edit:

For my photo montage I created two layers of the model and put one behind the other, then cut out the outline. After that, I decided to use an orange newspaper because I think it works very well on a blue background. Next, I got an image of a sketched face and cut out the eyes. I placed the sketched eyes over the models and was surprised that it worked well.

juxtaposition

Juxtaposition in photography happens when two or more people/objects are compared side by side, creating an interesting contrast in colours, shapes, lines, etc. It’s a very significant way to describe two contrasting effects of objects, ideas, people, images, and animals in a single photo.

2 point lighting

Two point lighting is the most versatile lighting design for shooting fashion or beauty on the street. Having a back light elevates the pictures to a more polished state. Take a look at any CSI tv show or 24 etc and freeze frame as you go. You will see two point lighting on just about every scene if not every shot.

Two point lighting in photography

The two point light principle is simplicity itself with the subject being lit from two opposing directions with the light sources are 180 degrees apart.

The crucial concept to understand when using 2 point lighting is that the light sources point directly towards each other and the subject is placed between the two.

9.

In this you can see 3 images that were arranged and taken with the 2 point lighting technique which is used to make a subject standout to the background, which is usually more darker and shadowed.

2.

My two point lighting images:

For these 4 images, I used 2 point lighting setup to make the model standout in the headshot. I believe it is a very effective way of portrait photography because it shows most of the detail of the models face without casting many shadows. After choosing the images I wanted to use, I used lightroom to edit them by changing features such as the exposure and clarity. Out of these 4 images my favourite is the one at the bottom left because I think the orange t-shirt stands out really well in front of the grey background and has a very good effect.
