hamptonne portraits

First I flagged my images using p and x and stared them using the starring system. I then selected 4 portraits that where rated 4 starts or more to edit into final images.

Then I went into develop mode and adjusted the white balance and the exposure and contrast in order to refine the image.

when I was happy with my editing I exported the image into the media drive in the size x1000.

I then repeated this for the remaining 3 images

Ideas

Task plan 3 photoshoots one inside one outside and one with 2 or more people.

Photoshoot 1: For the inside photoshoot I will ask one of my friends if I can photograph them in their room. Lounging like they would do in their day to day life to give the image an intel into what they are like as a person. I will probably use a higher angle to include as much of the environment as possible.

Photoshoot 2: For the outside photoshoot I would like to take some photos in a cloudy environment of someone doing their job.

Photoshoot 3: For the two or more people shoot I will ask my friend if I can photograph her and her brother outside from either a canted angle or a lower angle to create a more dimensional photograph.

Frustrated with the food shortages, increase in pricing, unfair taxation and the power structure in Jersey 500 islanders stormed the Royal Court with 13 demands on September 28th 1769.These demands included:

  1. Lowering the price of wheat
  2. Ejecting foreigners off the island

EDITING: in the first round of editing I selected images using p (pick) and x (reject) . After that I filtered my images by selecting the white flag.

then I went through the images that I had selected using P(pick) and rated them using a staring system. This allows for me to pick the best images.

then I went into develop mode to edit the photos with a star rating of 4 and above.

after entering develop mode I adjusted the white balance as the first step of my editing.

then I adjust the exposure and the contrast until I am happy with the final image.

these are the adjustments I made

cyanotypes

A cyanotype is a photographic printing process which produces a cyan/blue print. Engineers used this process in the 20th century to create blueprints. This process involves using two chemicals ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide. This process what discovered by a British scientist Sir John Hershel in 1842.

cyanotypes of British algae by Anna Atkins.

Anna Atkins

Was a British botanist and photographer Anna was the first person to publish a book with photographic images her 19th century cyanotypes used light exposure to create detailed images of botanical specimens.

Annas use of cyanotypes helped to merge photography and science and showed that photography has a potential in books.

1849 Anna published her book ‘Photographs Of British Algae: cyanotype impressions’ which only had a limited amount of copies.

my cyanotype

Here is the cyanotype I created on our visit to the Hamptonne using flowers and leaves that I had collected. I placed them on top of the paper and left it in the sun to process then I placed it in water for 2-3 minutes to stop it from developing more and set it out to dry.

History of photography

camera obscura from Latin it means a darkened room with a small lens or a hole through which an image is projected on to the wall opposite the hole however the image comes out inverted.

Nicephore Niepce was a French inventor best known for being the first to create a permanent photographic image by dissolving light sensitive bitumen in lavender oil and then applying a thin coating over a polished pewter plate. Which could be inserted into the camera obscura.

Louis Daguerre was a French photographer who invented the daguerreotype in 1839 it consisted of treating a silver-plated copper sheet with iodine to make it sensitive to light, then exposing it in a camera and developing the images with warm mercury vapor. This is an example of what the daguerreotypes looked like.

Henry Fox Talbot was an English photographer who discovered a way to make instant photographs which consisted of using printable steel plates and muslin screens to achieve middle tones in photos on a printing plate.

Richard Maddox was an English photographer who invented negative plates for photography in 1871 which meant that photographers no longer had to prepare their own emulsions in a darkroom.

George Eastman introduced the kodak camera in 1888 which meant anyone could now take pictures with a handheld camera just by pressing a button.

Kodak Brownie was a series of cameras made by Eastman fist introduced in 1900 it was a basic cardboard box camera with a simple meniscus lens that took 2 1/4 inch square pictures on 117 film roll.

Film photography film is the medium on which analogue cameras record images film comes in colour or black and white it produces a unique look as it allows for more vibrant colour variations.

Digital Photography uses cameras that contain electronic photodetectors to produce images focused by a lens. The captured images are digitalized and stored as a computer file ready for further digital processing.

Dorothea Lange Migrant Mother, Nipomo, California March 1936

Dorothea Lange ‘approached a hungry and desperate mother as if she was drawn by a magnet’ when she was driving north through San Louis Obispo county six years after the Dust Bowl she encountered the woman in a migrant workers campsite which was still effected by this tragedy.

The children looking away represent the strength that a mother needs to shelter her children from the outside world, however Florence ‘the migrant mothers’ facial expressions show how Dust Bowl migrants would look at the damage it caused their surroundings.

This image sets an emotive feeling of sadness as it is in a black and white colour scheme and the photo was taken to portray the hunger, poverty and helplessness the average American endured during the the dust bowl in 1930.

This image was taken with a high shutter speed as it shows the motion of her face as it expresses her emotions toward her surroundings and a lower ISO as the reflection on her face shows that the weather was probably sunny allowing for the highlights to stand out.
