Shoot 1 contact sheet

For this shoot I used bubble wrap and black tool fabric to attempt to portray the damages of the fashion industry on the planet I took these photos against a cobble wall to give a more defined feel to the model and the props in the images I also took some simple portraits to edit later on in photoshop.

I had 139 images from my first shoot inspired by Craig McDean after being imported into Lightroom before I began the editing process.

Then I refined my selection using P and X which left me with 50 images to begin the staring process

unsuccessful images

I think these images are unsuccessful do to being unfocused and have been taken with the wrong settings at the wrong angels or composition is off to what I was hoping to achieve.

These are the images before I do a star rating for 1-5 for this shoot

These are the top images I’ve selected from this shoot all being 5 stars on the star rating before I begin my editing process in develop mode.

Vilde rolfsen

Born in 1990 Rolfsen is a Norwegian photographer and print maker who is best known for her landscape photographs of plastic bags and other types of rubbish that is known for polluting the environment and the sea. She shoots many photos using a canon D60 but she also uses her phone when it comes to some of her most popular work.

why I chose this photographer:

I picked this artist as I’m very inspired by her photos as they almost resemble waves and the ocean by her use of lighting as the plastic folding allows for shadows and highlights to be built into a conceptual image. Her style of photography will also push me to use new techniques when shooting for this project as it will make me try out new lighting and angles that i might not normally consider during a photoshoot. Further more I selected this artist as her work fits into my theme of fashion and consumer greed really well as most fashion brands come in plastic packaging when brought from an online website or in person in a store.

image analysis

Vilde Rolfsen - PLASTIC BAG LANDSCAPES | Archive Collective Magazine

i chose this image from Rolfsen’s series “Plastic bag landscapes” as it was a series of images that helped raise awareness to the detrimental effects that plastic waste has on our oceans while she manages to highlight the beauty of the discarded bags that she finds on the streets of Oslo she hopes that her work helps viewers to take a closer look at their plastic consumption.

i really like the use of colour in this image as it pulls focus to different areas this image almost resembles a cave as the lower half has a war almost fire like sense to it and the top a contrasting ice feel to it.

how could I use Craig and Vilde’s work together

I can take normal portraits of a model then useing the photos from the Vilde Rolfsen inspired bag shoot cut out mask shapes on photoshop and place them onto my Craig McDean inspired shoot to create a final selection of images.

ANTHROPOCENE definition and statement of intent

used to describe the most recent period in Earth’s history when human activity started to have a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems.

why should we tackle this subject through photography?

Photography can depict the effects of time weather its through climate change or how man made buildings and products have taken an effect on our environment hopefully raising an awareness to how what the human civilisation have done through time has effected our current surroundings.

mind map

mood board

I’m going to attempt to portray greed in society through portraiture and add elements of fashion for one of my shoots I will take portraits of models wrapped in fabrics and plastics to show the effects these materials have on wildlife and the environment we live in to bring light to how fashion as an industry has drastic effects on ocean pollution and even in agriculture because even if we don’t see the actual effects now people in other countries suffer the consequences of landfill and deal with harsh chemically polluted water daily. I’ve selected these images for my mood board as I feel like they fit under the topic of greed the portraits have this essence of chemically damaged through the textures shown.

Keld Helmer-Petersen

Keld Helmer-Petersen is one of the most influential Danish photographers in the 20th Century. He was an international pioneer in colour photography and was a central figure in not only Danish but also European modernist photography. His career lasted 70 years and he had strong interest in modern architecture, industrial areas and structures. He was very prolific and continuously experimented and challenged the many possibilities of photography and imagery.

Keld Helmer-Petersen biography — KELD HELMER-PETERSEN

early life-

Keld Helmer-Petersen born 23rd August 1920 in Copenhagen, where he lived and worked most of his life until his death in 2013. He started photographing in 1938, when he was given a camera as a graduation gift.

he studied the graphic and abstract affects of photography he was self taught and studied technical manuals, journals and photobooks. He also took inspiration from radical image experiments during the war and the avant-garde photography during the Bauhaus period. He collaborated and socialised with architects, musicians, artists and writers who inspired him.

examples of his work
comparison of response

both images were taken at an industrial sight although my image isn’t based around the straight lines in the architecture it shares the same theme that Keld was trying to maintain during his career I managed to produce a 3D image just like he did while still having a good contrast and maintaining the texture of the metal work in the image due to the use of the correct iso for the natural/daylight lighting.

contact sheet shoot 2 industrial lanscapes

I imported my photos into Lightroom to start my editing process

I then flagged my best images using p and x and then set up my staring system 5 being the best 3 being the worst

my highest rated images

Then I went into develop mode and began the editing process I began by cropping images and then fixing the exposure and contrast of the images.

final images

urban industrial

edits on photoshop
I did a colour splash of this image by cutting out the red tones in the original image of the industrial estate and layering them by copy and placing them onto the final image then I placed them over the original red signs in the photo.
for this image I made a copy of the background layer and took away all the tones in the image to make it purply black and white almost in the style of Keld Helmer-Petersen.
for the final image I decided to make a double exposure image of this building in la collet.

urban landscapes shoot 1

after importing my images into light room i selected them using p and x and refined this selection using the staring system
then i began the editing process in develop mode adjusting the WB and contrast and exposure of the top rated images
i also played around with them in black and white and made a decision based on the highlights, lines and shadows
finally cropped them and used the transform tool to fix the angle of the images so my horizon would be straight

These images were taken throughout London which I think is fitting for this project as it is a very man altered urban city filled with different cultures and many interesting buildings such as skyscrapers, museums and many of these have modern architecture infiltrated into them.

final images
final edits in photoshop

I really like how the tones in these two images juxtapose each other as one shows the lighter side to London’s architecture and the one in black and white shows a more refined view of the cities skyline as the more prominent shadows pull more focus to how the cities buildings are laid out.

Then I went into photoshop and made a copy of my background layers for both images and then used the exclusion filter to make the whites in the buildings stand out then I moved around the copy of the layer to add a double exposure effect on the images.

urban landscapes

An urban area, or built-up area, is a human settlement with a high population density and infrastructure of built environment. Urban areas are created through urbanization and are categorized as cities, towns, conurbations or suburbs.

mood board

Joel Meyerowitz

Joel Meyerowitz is an American street, portrait and landscape photographer. He began photographing in colour in 1962 and was an early advocate of the use of colour during a time when there was significant resistance to the idea of colour photography as serious art.

his early work consisted mainly of black-and-white street photographs made with a Leica, by 1976 he had turned primarily to colour photographs of architectural light and space made with a large-format view camera.

examples of his work
New York City, 1978

I like the use of tones in this image and how the urban environment around is eye catching such as the empire state building that can be seen at the end of the horizon. The use of low shutter speed it shows how New York is busy and full of life as down the street you can see the pedestrians walking towards the foreground.

rural landscapes shoot

I imported my images into light room and used a flagging system using p and x inspired by romanticism and rural landscape photography inspired by Fay Godwin’s work

I then went through the editing process for each image adjusting WB, contrast and exposure
I also cropped the images
Made some black and white to add contrast
I also used the transform tool in order to straighten up the images

Final images

comparison with Godwin’s work

Although my image isn’t in black and white I think I was able to capture a pretty similar image with the cliff face being the main focal point I was also able to capture the textures in the image similarly to Fay over all I think I managed to capture a similar romanticised aspect of a softness in the image.

Stephen Shore

is an American photographer who grew up in New York, known for his images of banal scenes and objects in the United States, and for his pioneering use of colour in art photography. His books include Uncommon Places in 1982 and American Surfaces in 1999, photographs that he took on cross-country road trips in the 1970s capturing the mundane aspects of American culture in straightforward, unglamorous images.

Shore has worked with many forms of photography, switching from cheap automatic cameras to large-format cameras in the 1970s, pioneering the use of colour before returning to black and white in the 1990s, and in the 2000s taking up the opportunities of digital photography, digital printing, and social media. He focused on capturing day to day aspects of an average Americans life such as fast food joints and housing he didn’t make an attempt to glamorise the human effects to a once natural environment this can be seen through his new Topographic images.

He was known as one of many new topographic photographers who killed romanticism in photography.

Beverly Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, California, June 21, 1975

I really like this image as it doesn’t make an attempt to glamorise an aspect of day to day life the image captures movement on the roads which shows the hustle of living in the city in the 1970s. the mountain range in the back adds an element of what the garage could have looked like if it hadn’t been created by man kind the lighting creates a focus on the road which pulls you away from the signs which are scattered around in the foreground of the image and towards the mountain range in the horizon.
