comparisons to artists work

My 3 artists were:
  • Craig McDean
  • Vilde Rolfsen
  • Marco Mori

Similarities are that both me and Craig took portraits of a female model with a mask made out of a material that is seen as wasteful or has negative impact on the environment. Differences are that my image has a colour splash feel to it as its in black and white with a blue splash of colour and Craig’s has a full colour image and where I edited in the mask he used a piece of paper as a prop in his shoot.

Both mine and Vield’s images have a sense of depth to them both show different tones of blues with contrasting highlights my image is on the darker side but I feel like its still got a similar sense of airiness and light both images have a tunnel like effect in the horizon and are both images of the inside of plastic bags taken with artificial lighting which show how pollution in the ocean is a serious topic.

Similarities are that we both photographed a model surrounded by clothing items which are depicted as waste and make the images seem cluttered both our models are making straight eye contact with the camera and both images show a sense of depth and texture. Differences are my image is black and white and shot in a cantered angle to avoid the blanc open space in the background.

final outcomes and evaluations

shoot 1 final outcomes and evaluation

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-1101.png
I decided to display this image as a singular A4 image as I like how it stands out on its own and I like how the blue really stands out against the black.
Evaluation

These images are a response to Craig McDeans work In my opinion this part of my project went well as it shows a good variety of emotion. The idea behind these images was to portray the damages of fashion as an industry on the ever developing world we live in, and that in the years to come we might suffer with the consequences of the chemical damage to water sources and farm land and the land that has been wasted due to landfills from clothing companies who aren’t able to sell all their stock. I decided to take these photos outside as it helps resemble the detrimental effects on the environment through the natural lighting and the trees showing above the walls in 3 of the images can show how the growing waste caused by clothes in landfills is taking up possible nature parks and farmland that could be providing habitats and food recourses for humans.

Shoot 2 final outcomes and evaluation

These will be A4 images
Evaluation

This shoot was inspired by Vilde Rolfsen in my opinion this aspect of my project turned out well as I was able to show my understanding of her work and knowledge on how to create a unique set of images that still have the same essence as her work without being direct copies. I decided to only print one image from this shoot for mounting as many of them share similar qualities therefore displaying only one allows me to use the image without it feeling over done.

shoot 3 final outcomes and evaluation

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-1099-1024x583.png
I will display these 3 images together like this.
Evaluation

This shoot is a response to Marco Mori’s work, I think this photoshoot was successful as it shows influence from my chosen artist I managed to create these high resolution images with natural and artificial lighting I also managed to produce a series of meaningful and conceptual images that show a variety of skills such as camera handling and concept creating. I think this shoot could have been better if I took more images in a wider range of angles and posed the model in a wider variety of poses. If I could re do this shoot one thing I would change would be using more materials such as a variety of paper and plastics such as bottles to create a stronger message about pollution.

experimentation

For my experiments I want to make a collection of 3 images that can be displayed together as a tryptic or alone and be just as effective and thought provoking.

First experiment wave overlay

For my first experiment I took an image from my 3rd shoot inspired by Marco Mori and his reusable fashion shoot to create this image:

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is wave--1024x903.jpg

for this image I used a PNG off google of a wave crashing to help show the effects that fashion has on the ocean I think this image is effective as it helps show how chemical waste and plastic debris from fashion ends up polluting the sea

Images I used for my second edit multi exposure
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is plastic-740x1024.jpg

for this image I used two of my images from my Vilde Rolfsen inspired shoot and one from my Marco Mori shoot to create the feeling that you’re looking through a plastic bag in order to emote how fashion can feel suffocating to society. through a multi-exposure image.

Third experiment
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-988-1024x576.png

I took my image into photoshop and used a PNG of this blue fabric to create a mask over the models face and then I turned the opacity of the PNG layer down so I could rub out the excess of the image so it lays flat on the models face.

I wasn’t happy with my original composition so I went back and focused on fixing the awkward section around the mouth area until I was happy with my final image.

This edit was inspired by Craig McDeans mask image that I analysed in my artist reference.

Evaluation of experimentation

Over all I’m pleased with my final experimentation outcomes as I managed to achieve what I set out to do. Something I would do differently next time would be insure that I take more similar photos that I can edit in succession and take my own photos to use as overlays instead of relying on PNGs to edit my images, However relevance to my topic was achieved and overall I think these are good images that correlate with the theme of Anthropocene through fashion.

shoot 3 edits

Photoshoot plan:

My final shoot will be inspired by the work of Marco Mori I will take images a model surrounded by clothing and plastic bags that are used in the fashion industry I would also like to play around with the angles from above and straight on to create a meaningful selection of images. I will shoot these on my camera using natural lighting and flash indoors.

editing thought process and explanation:

For this shoot I decided to keep some images in colour as it creates a better more meaningful selection of photographs due to the contrasting colours in the images I also like how they are more eye-catching due to this aspect as it shows how fashion is fun but has its down side when it comes to the planet. However the black and white images create an even better texture and contrast but I think the coloured images next to the black and white ones will create a nice contrasting composition.

To edit these images I went into develop mode in Lightroom and began my editing process by cropping them and using the spot removal tool to remove any dust that could of effected the camera lens during the shoot then I adjusted the WB and tone in each image before deciding whether to keep it in colour or make it black and white

Final images after Lightroom

Most successful image from this shoot

This is my best image from this shoot as I feel like it resembles Marcos work the most I like how even in black and white this image managed to create depth and a contras in textures and it shows a wide range of materials that were used in the shoot I also like how it was shot at a cantered angle which allows for a more appealing visual feel while still tackling my theme effectively. Finally I like how the models posed in more of an interesting position as it shows how the weight of the effect of this industry’s impact on the world.

shoot 2 edits

Photoshoot plan:

For my second photoshoot inspired by Vilde Rolfsen I will take plastic bags and take landscape photos of the inside of them ill probably do this shoot inside and use mostly white and blue plastic bags as they allow the most light to go through them I will take some images with white cold lighting and a more warm yellow lighting and then experiment with coloured lighting such as pink and lastly 2 point lighting to create more depth and contrast in the images. These will also be shot on my camera.

Black and white

For my black and white images I first adjusted the WB settings to ensure I was happy with the images before making them black and white then I adjusted the tone settings to create more contrast and depth in the images to ensure I wasn’t losing the details in the original images.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-375-1024x576.png

Colour edits

For my edits in colour I adjusted the WB to allow for a softer colour pallet through my images as I didn’t quite like the harshness of the blue against the white background, when I was happy with the WB I then went on to adjusting the tone and contrast of these images to create a horizon and a main focal point to each image. I decided to keep most of the images from this shoot in colour as it creates a stronger message about how even if pollution is seen in a beautiful sense it is still just as bad for the environment as other factors such as oil spills, natural disasters, global warming and more.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-368-1024x576.png

I am pleased with the images I have selected as I think they are a good representation of my artists work Vield Rolfsen I also like how they are in a similar style but not the exact same which allows for my own interpretation of her work to be shown. I think I managed to achieve a good variety of depth in my images and show good use of lighting and a variety of camera handling skills to ensure I came out with a good array of images

Final images after Lightroom

My most successful image from this shoot:

This is my best image from this shoot as its the one that resembles Vilde’s work the most it also shows the most texture which I like as it has an essence of the ocean and almost resembles a cave I also like the depth and the variety of colours in this image as the light reflecting off the blue creates this purple glow in the foreground of the image. Over all I think was successful in capturing the essence of her work through this photoshoot and especially this particular image.

shoot 1 edits

Photoshoot plan:

My first photoshoot will be inspired by the work of Craig McDean I will take portraits of a model with and without fabrics and plastics to attempt to show how fashion effects the environment I will use a darker background maybe a cobble wall or a plain black background during the morning to afternoon to create softer lighting. I will use my camera to take the images for this shoot as it will allow me to take the best contrast images. Materials I will use plastic and some fabric maybe black tool as it is sheer enough that you can still see the models features through it.

Editing thought process and explanation:

For this shoot I decided to change all the images into black and white as it creates a good contrast between the materials and the background I think it also helps portray the darkness of the topic and how humans are so quick to brush over the topic of plastic pollution and how it effects multiple industries the planet and it’s population.

For my editing I went into develop mode on Lightroom and cropped any parts of the images I wanted to take out and then used the transform tool to insure the images were straight. Then I proceeded to adjust the WB for each image and the tone. Finally I turned them into monochrome images using the black and white setting in Lightroom and by adjusting any tones that needed to be lighter or darker such as highlights and contrasts to ensure I was happy with the final outcome of each photograph.

Final images after Lightroom

Most successful image from this shoot

This is my best image from this shoot as it is the most thought provoking out of the set I also really like the contrast between the bubble wrap and the models features against the texture of the cobble wall this image represents how clothing we wear is made from plastics and chemicals as the bubble wrap almost resembles a cable knit jumper and the tool a scarf. Furthermore this image can also be seen as effects the fashion industry has on global warming as the materials resemble a warm coat and scarf and the cool tone of black and white helps give the image a cold dark feel to it.

shoot 3 contact sheet

For this shoot I used a plain white sheet under the props to make sure the model is the main focal point I shot these images using flash and natural lighting with a variety of angles. I used a suitcase and a verity of clothing and shopping bags to portray the message that humans will continue to over purchase clothing due to the continuous evolving fashion industry even when we’re aware that we have no space and they will be sent to landfill eventually.

I had 75 images from this shoot inspired by Marco Mori after being imported into light room.

Then I refined my final image selection using P and X to filter my successful images from my unsuccessful images which left me with 37 images before beginning my editing process.

unsuccessful images

These images were unsuccessful as they didn’t turn out as I originally planned or camera settings were off due to the way the lighting entered my room and the way the camera picked up the props due to ISO settings being too high.

These are the successful images before I start the star rating system from 1-5.

These are the best rated images from this shoot before I start editing them in develop mode.

Marco mori

Mori is a portrait photographer from London who specialises in working with big brands such as Hugo boss and Puma he does advertising shoots for charities such as the British Heart foundation. Mori studied typography at the London college of print. He shoots his images with artificial studio lighting mostly with a white light rather than a warm tone or yellow he shoots these on a canon camera but he doesn’t disclose which one specifically. He also specialises in sympathetic retouching

why I chose this photographer:

I selected this photographer as his work during London fashion week partnered with the detergent brand vanish to create the ‘Rewear Edit’ fits my theme for this project of bringing awareness to how fashion effects the world more than we think such as the ocean and landfills. During this shoot models were photographed surrounded by clothing waste. Renowned stylist and sustainability advocate Miranda Almond has looked to a rubbish pile to curate outfits for the shoot, highlighting the fact that Britain sends 350,000 tonnes of clothes to landfill each year.

Mori will inspire me to use multiple new angles and try out a new style of modern and conceptual photography in my project.

examples of his work

image analysis

I chose this image as I think its really successful and eye catching by having the model in a simple off white dress it creates a good contrast between the clothing waste she’s surrounded by. The background being also covered in clothing waste creates a smooth transition from the harshness of the bath tub prop which is used. The image is taken from an above angle which creates an interesting horizon as the heater would be your focal point the image creates awareness to the topic while also creating a tunnel focal point.

I think the way Marco photographed this image shows a high level of conceptual and artistic skill as he has managed to capture a series of textures and 3 dimensional objects without losing the message in the image.

Craig McDean

Craig is a British fashion photographer who works with multiple medias such as plastics and papers to show effects of pollution through editorial fashion concepts

examples of his work

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-33-1024x574.png
why I chose this photographer:

I chose to research Craig’s work as it has a element of sustainability and I like how his concepts take more thought as when looking at the images its not an obvious fashion has an effect on the world and pollution but when you have a closer look and realise these materials are plastics, paper and cottons shaped into a beautiful array of images. I also think his style of photography is inspiring as I like how he uses different lighting techniques and angles to give certain images a darker more meaningful tone in order to portray my theme I will attempt to use his images and style of photography to expand on my ideas further by implementing his use of multi medias to create 3d images.

image analysis

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is images-16-edited.jpg

I chose to analyse this image as I think it shows successfully a good balance between his work on the importance of raising awareness to the pollution that the fashion industry causes the use of contrasting colours such as the yellow of the paper and the blue of the eyeshadow it pulls focus to the eyes using a butterfly lighting technique to create a shadow under the chin and nose of the model while adding depth to the yellow paper the portrait is taken as a sort of headshot style I think this helps portray emotion in the image as you can see this look of almost despair on the models face.

Shoot 2 contact sheet

For this photoshoot I used a plain white background to ensure that I could achieve the best lighting possible using artificial lighting. I also tried to play with the aperture and ISO settings to allow the most depth in the images I created.

For my second shoot I ended up only having 49 images inspired by Vilde Rolfsen these are the images after being imported into Lightroom

These are the images that I decided to keep and the ones I didn’t before applying the flagged filter to only show the images from the shoot I wish to edit

unsuccessful images

I think theses images are unsuccessful for a number of reasons as the camera settings weren’t quite right, I don’t like the composition of them or lighting being odd in some areas of the images which draw negative attention and reduce overall depth to the image. over all I think these images didn’t capture the swirl essence that Vield Rolfsen captures

After I imported the images I refined my selection using P and X and ended up with 23 images that I liked from my shoot

Then set up a staring system from 1-5 which now meant I have the 13 strongest images from my shoot which I then went on to edit in develop mode
