anthropocene – evaluation and critique

Evaluation

I think this project went pretty well. The work I did was satisfactory and I think that I chose good locations to take photographs. The quarry was good because it showed the industrial side of Jersey that not many see. The same goes for the greenhouses, but it shows the abandonment of agriculture that not many see. The photos I took worked with the theme of the project and they came out well.

First I made an introduction to Anthropocene and my project. I defined what Anthropocene in photography is and showed some examples of it. I think an introduction is important for any project as it gives the reader an insight on what you are going to do. It is also helpful for someone who does not know what Anthropocene is. Instead of going straight in it will explain to them what the topic of the project is first.

I then started thinking about where to go to take photos. I made a mind map which is helpful for comparing ideas.

Then I did a blog post about my artist references who inspired me. I wrote a couple sentences about where each artist came from and put in some photos of their work. I focused more on Edward Burtynsky and his work. I did an image analysis on his work. I focused more on him because he inspired me most

Then I made an action plan for my photoshoots, explaining where I would go and included screenshots from google maps for the locations.

After taking the photos and coming back to school I sorted through them in Lightroom, picking the best ones to use in my project.

Then I planned my ideas. These were to edit the old tv, show a contrast of agriculture and urbanisation in jersey, photomontage and comparisons between Edward Burtynsky.

While editing my photos I took screenshots and started to show how I was experimenting with my work. I put these screenshots into my blog to show the process.

I then presented my work by posting another blog post and organising my photos into groups, with other photos that go together.

Finally, I compared my pictures of tires and quarry to Edward Burtynsky’s. It is important to show who inspired you to take your photos, and also interesting to compare their work to yours.

Critique

I could have done another photoshoot somewhere else to represent urbanisation better. Somewhere like St Helier or Five Oaks would have been a good idea for a third photoshoot. Instead I used La Collette and Harve Des Pas photos from the walk to show urbanisation in St Helier.
