STUDIO PORTRAITS 1

Studio portraits :

Illuminating a studio configuration, portentous lighting is important. Portentous lighting can be created by adding a lot of contrast. Dark areas are just as important as light areas. This type of lighting requires a number of light sources located in a way that produce very light areas and some very dark ones. The most basic studio lighting uses a main light (1), a fill light (2), and a backlight (3). This is the most common lighting setting for studio-independent objects. A three-point configuration will immediately work well and is an excellent starting point for creating special effects. Light bulbs are useful because they allow you to control your direction and incident points to provide drama to the scene.

3 Point Lighting :

Three-point lighting is a standard method of three-source lighting, I only use this technique with a few images This technique does not please me too much

1 Point Lighting :

I had a lot of fun with one light, I love the shadows found behind or on the faces of people in the pictures. I often ask people on the cheek picture with their hands their arms their body basically to create more shade.I create different types of lights just by placing the main flash in several different places.

Studio Portraits

Why is studio lighting important?

Studio lighting is an essential addition to most photographers’ arsenal. It allows us to create natural lighting effects in a variety of situations, and is far more controllable than a flash. It also adds mood and atmosphere.

3-Point Lighting

It is used in photography, cinematography, and 3D visualizations, it is used to properly illuminate a subject in an effective and pleasing way by simply using three separate lights.

Fill Light

It is a supplementary light mainly used to lighten shadows in an image. Fill light is often used in portrait photography to create a contrast between the image subject and image background giving the scene a sense of depth

Chiaroscuro

technical term used by artists to describe their drawings or paintings that showed bold contrast and distinct areas of light and darkness.

Lighting Test

Because I was at home and had no one the photograph I used Blender and the lights in that program to experiment with lights.

Natural Light

Natural light is anything that produces light by itself. Natural sources of light include the sun, stars, fire, and electricity in storms.

Light intensity refers to the strength or amount of light produced by a specific lamp source.

The direction of the lamp determines the shadows and highlights

Light temperature, determines if the image has a blue tint or a orange tint. If it is balanced then it will appear normal and the white tones will appear white.

Golden hour is the first hour after sunrise and the last hour of light before sunset that produces a warm natural light. That window of time is determined by where you are geographically, as well as the season.

A reflector is a tool that helps a photographer to manipulate the light by providing another surface for the light to bounce off of.

My Photos

Final Photo 1

I like this photo as there is not direct eye contact in the photo, although it is still set up. I used 1 light to get the face highlighted and the background darker, this make it so that you focus more on the face. The background is also plain which attracts more attention to the subject. To edit it, I boosted the contrast and the saturation the add more pink to the face.

Experimenting with colours

I used some coloured filters on the lights, which created a coloured glow.

It made unique contrasts and clashes between the light different lights.

Final Images

I like this image as the white light is softly projected on the face, which highlights his facial features. The red draws attention to the image, and draws anyone in that looks at it. Also, the subject is centered, which is a nice touch.

I like how the images appears to merge out of the darkness, with the red glow, which gives off an evil glow.

Studio Headshots

In this photoshoot I experimented with soft box lighting and flash lighting. I used a transmitter to set off the box lights at the same time as the shutter speed to create an intense contrast between light and dark.

ISO=100

Exposure set manually

Shutter speed=1/125

Aperture=f/16

Experimenting with lighting photoshoot

The images highlighted in red are my least successful images because they are slightly out of focus, making them blurry. One is also underexposed which makes it too dark, preventing any visual contrast of light and dark.

The photographs highlighted in green are most successful because they are not too over or under exposed and create a clear, strong contrast between light and dark.

I wanted to keep the tones and colours in the image similar but slightly cooler, however I increased the contrast in order to create a stronger juxtaposition between light and dark and then cropped the image to get rid of excess background that I didn’t want in my final photo.

Studio Portraits

Studio photography uses a photography studio to capture an image of a subject. The photographer can control every aspect of the shoot from different backdrops and lighting (studio portraits tend to include simple monochromatic backgrounds), they can also decide what to include in the photo, such as costumes and props.Costumes and props for models can be used to create different outcomes, such as using props from specific time periods to create an older looking image.

Lighting is very important in Studio photography. Photographers need to concentrate on the lighting as different shadows make different impacts and change the mood and atmosphere of a photo. To make a strong bold image a photographer may want to dramatise the shadow to create a higher contrast between the subject and the background.

Three-point lighting is often used as a form of lighting in a studio setting. It is when you have three light sources placed in three different positions, usually artificial lighting. By changing the size, distance, intensity, and position of them a photographer can control how the light and shadow appear in the photo and how they work with the subject.

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedons’ career started when he joined the armed forces in 1942 during World War II, serving as Photographer’s Mate Second Class in the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Avedon was fascinated by capturing personality and evoking the life of his subjects. He used stylistic and narrative poses, attitudes, hairstyles, clothing and accessories as he knew that these are vital to use the right way to get a perfect image.

He is better known for his commercial photography that he did for brands and magazines.

Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro lighting is a technique that has been used for centuries. It entails the use of a distinct contrast between light and dark.

The above image shows Chiaroscuro lighting techniques where I shot the subject in a dark place and used fluorescent lighting to highlight just parts of my subjects face. The lighting positioned above the subject casts long shadows in a downward fashion to accentuate the facial features of my subject.

Chiaroscuro was used in old renaissance paintings such as this painting from Caravaggio where strong contrast between light and dark can be seen both on the casted shadow on the subjects faces and the background being dark and certain facial features being highlighted.

Caravaggio, Michelangelo Merisi da; Salome receives the Head of John the Baptist

Rembrandt Lighting

Rembrandt Lighting is a lighting technique where light illuminates one side of the face and there is a small triangle of light present on the subjects cheek.

Seen in the above image is my example of where I used Rembrandt Lighting. I used a fluorescent light source on the right side of the subject and casted enough of a shadow so that the nose shadow connects with the cheek shadow to create a small triangle of light on the subjects left cheek.

We use studio lighting to manipulate shadows, accentuate features of a subject, create a mood and manipulate the colour of the background.

Three point lighting is a lighting technique that uses three lights
– the key light, fill light and the back light.

Fill lights are used to fill in the shadows in the background

Key lights are used to light the subject.

Back lights are used to separate the subject from the background by creating a subtle rim of light around the subject.
