Personal Investigation – Statement of Intent

Identity Mind-map

Identity Moodboard

Write a Statement of Intent that clearly contextualises;
What you want to explore?
Why it matters to you?
How you wish to develop your project?
When and where you intend to begin your study?

Make sure you describe your chosen theme (IDENTITY & COMMUNITY), subject-matter (topic, issue), artists (inspirations, references) and final outcome (photobook, film).

Statement Of Intent

The discussion of teenager’s mental health is growing in everyday society, some disregard it and some understand it’s increasing prominence; I wish to create a study on the theme ‘Identity’ surrounding the topic of anxiety. I have personally suffered from generalised anxiety disorder from a young age, it has always been a part of my life and I am still learning to deal and live with it, however it is not something I am ashamed of. I am grateful for the knowledge I have that I am not alone on this journey, many of my friends and family are also affected by it so can understand and help each other through any days or moments in life that are particularly difficult. I really want to use photography as a medium to explore how I have coped with anxiety throughout my life, focusing on the idea of finding safety and comfort in certain places around my home, family member’s homes and areas around the island that have always made me feel less anxious. The whole concept of anxiety has been quite normalised in today’s society, having both positive and negative effects, as some feel less alone while others feel less seen. Highlighting this topic, by studying the positive areas of life where I have felt most safe, is very important to me; what matters to me most is creating a truthful display on a personal topic. My ideas for the development of this project are to capture some still life images around my home, using windows in many compositions with reflections of sunlight being a reminder of hope. An artist that has interested me while researching this type of imagery is Daniel Blaufuks, whose are naturalistic yet orchestrated scenes in his images hold questions around memories and nostalgia. Additionally, I have really connected with the work of Robert Darch and his project ‘Vale’, where he documents rooms in and around his home that he has lived in isolation with throughout his struggles with illness. I would really like to develop my project by taking inspiration from Darch’s photography, possibly capturing moments of countryside walks I would go on when feeling anxious during lockdown or visiting the woodlands I would explore as a child – highlighting the idea of ‘escaping reality’ through made up stories and games to keep my mind away from getting worried or scared. I aim for my final outcome to be a photobook that is able to capture and focus on the positive memories dealing with anxiety, where I’ve felt safe and loved by those around me while also showing moments of fear and realism to contrast.

The final concept that we as a group decided to work on to make a film was old social norms vs social differences in terms of gender. The reason as to why we as a group decided to to go for this concept is because we wanted to tackle the issue of genders, not being able to mix clothing for comfortability due to the judgment that this could bring to people in society. For example, if a man was to wear a skirt he would receive heavy judgement for this, with people assuming that male would be gay, gender fluid etc, where it could be just for comfort and people being more open to their sexuality. Therefore as a group we decided to make a short film on this to potentially open the minds of people in society to being more open on genders, being able to mix and match clothes for comfortability or other reasons.

How are we making the film?

In order to make the film we have planned to use the studio as our location to gather the footage we need. To the studio we will bring a stool, tripod, different clothing and a camera as these different components will be needed to make our film. Moreover, we will be having our male model positioned in front of a green screen. The reasoning as to why we are using a green screen is so that we can edit the video to change the colours of the background in order to show the transitions through the genders with the outfits we have our male model wearing. Once we have our camera set up on the tripod, the camera will be recording the whole shoot with our model moving in and out the shot in different outfits. Once we get to the editing of the film, we will be getting snap shots of the film in order to gather images to edit for the final shot for our final edits. Moreover, we will be having some dialogue being put in the film which will be covering the social stereotypes on gender and how people could be more open minded to this social issue of gender stereotypes and expectations. Finally, we also decided that we will put some little animated doodles on the film so that it isn’t boring for people watching it as they will have other things to gain their attraction.

Community NFT Project

What is an NFT?

NFT stands for non-fungible token. “Fungible” is an economic term which refers to a good or asset that can be exchanged for another good or asset of equal value. If something is “non-fungible,” it means it can’t be swapped for something of completely equal value. An area of land would be non-fungible, since land is unique, and finding another area with the exact same value would be difficult to impossible. Art is another example of a non-fungible asset, since its value is highly subjective. A quote from NFT book, by Two Lives ‘2 LIVES is the first exhibition ever that aims to educate and connect traditional art to digital art and the finance world to the art world, by showcasing NFTs through their multi-businesses opportunities to artists, students, curators, collectionists, stakeholders, creators and whoever involved in the NFT space. 2 LIVES is an homage to the island of Jersey through its best-renowned artists and their stories, in order to create a forever lasting exhibition in the virtual world (The Metaverse) and accessible from everywhere to become a blueprint for the future of exhibitions, jobs and community building in NFTs.’

A community of the future will celebrate diversity, equality and inclusion and propose a new digital world; a metaverse where everyone is equal regardless of class, race, gender and age. A digital ecosystem that transcends all virtual identities into a utopia for peace, prosperity and progress.

CONCEPT: What will the future of Jersey look like as a community in the metaverse?

Our group for this project brainstormed many ideas surrounding community, and how communities may change or evolve in the future. We produced a mind map with themes such as religion, class, family etc – however a common area of interest was the evolution of feminism and how equality may look in the Metaverse. I then produced a mood board demonstrating different communities of women, may it be protesters, family members, diversity activists – the list goes on – all with roots linking to feminism and equality.

Describe in;

3 Words – Equal, Diverse, Free

A Sentence – A community full of equality between men and woman, a future with women’s rights and freedom.

A Paragraph – The evolution of women’s rights into the future Metaverse, a time when diversity and equality are the norms, where a woman can choose what she does with her body without the input from the government and society around her. The aim for this project is to represent a future community, both digitalised and physical, where women are empowered and are seen as equals to men. Challenging dominant ideologies surrounding feminism and the female gender, this project will show how the representation of women has changed over time, and how it will continue to change as our world evolves into a more digital and automated society.

NFT Community – Ideas

What is Community

A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.

A few discussed ideas regarding the continuation of the concept of community into the future of humans every day lives:

I emphasise the word lives and draw attention to the fact that in these modern times, and continuing with a great deal into the future, we are living two lives. This refers to our physical, tangible life where we interact with people face to face and engage in careers, passions, hobbies and all aspects life offers in a physical way and then also our online lives. Both are thriving with different communities of people. These two lives merge in many ways but they also can juxtapose massively where we see people escaping one life to interact with contrasting communities in the other. A few of these communities are brainstormed below:

Below is a mood-board which is going to act as the foundations for the visual aesthetic of the project. The idea behind the images is how humans will react in a community in the future. We want to base our aesthetic off of an exaggerated sense of the future, e.g., flying cars, heightened technological advances. We also focussed on the word metaverse when brainstorming these ideas.

What is the metaverse

The word “Metaverse” is made up of the prefix “meta” and the stem “verse”; the term is typically used to describe the concept of a future iteration of the internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe.

Anthroposcene Ideas

I have chosen to explore the concept of Anthropocene through the genre of landscape photography. I plan to react to ideas of nature being transformed through industry and venture into ideas of altered landscapes through my images. I will do this by shooting landscapes in a wider and vast perspective, of which supplies a view of the full picture. This allows a juxtaposition to be made between the natural environment and what man has interrupted it with.

I also plan to express the conflict between urbanisation and the environment by shooting derelict buildings and portraying nature fighting back against man. I plan to incorporate some abstract methods of photographing these buildings, with a more zoomed in perspective.

Below is some inspiration for my Anthropocene project:

Anthropocene – Mindmap and Ideas

Anthropocene Moodboard

Initial Ideas

After researching different object, portrait and abstract photographers and analysing their techniques to portray ‘Anthropocene’, I have decided to focus my project on landscape photography as I would like to demonstrate how man-made structures are increasingly impacting our natural environment. I plan on capturing landscapes around Jersey in three different stages; the first highlighting the beautiful natural areas in reservoirs and woodlands, the second showing areas of Jersey where nature can still be seen however man’s impact is taking effect and the third exhibiting the cluttered industrial landscapes of our island. My concept is to produce three final images in a sequence, with each image showing the increasing levels of environmental destruction and foreshadowing how a future of mass industrialisation is growing closer every minute.
