final outcome for binary opposites

This is my favourite comparison out of the 4 for many reasons. I also didn’t use one of my edited photos in an altered landscape style as i thought it wasn’t appropriate as what i want to show was development and change. First, I feel as if this area in the photo is the most developed, meaning more comparisons between the two.

once difference between the photos is the flooring, in the older photo, you can see the road is cobbled whereas now, the road is tarmacked with parking lines painted on. In the left front corner of the old photo, there is no obstructions, in fact the whole road is clear, comparatively in the modern photo, there’s a bin, rafts and cars obstructing the road all the way down.

My work is similar the Rauschenberg’s as we both set out to do our projects with the same intentions of rephotographing locations in older photos we have both previously found prior to the project. However we differ by Rauschenberg studying and recreating all photos previously taken my Eugene Atget. Whilst my photos were found on the Jersey archive page, taken by unknown and potentially different photographers.

Anthropocene is shown in this photo through all the changes. The tarmacked road, cars and rafts that weren’t previously there, but put there by human activity.

photo-shoot – 2 – waste…. relating to MANDY BARKER

Plan

I have decided to base this photoshoot on the waste that is thrown out into the ocean. I collected waste from the beaches such as the old fishing rope and plastic parts. Then to get an ocean look towards the images I submerged a blue piece of card underwater in a sink with the rubbish floating around. The beauty in the flower placed is to replicate the oceans goods but then is shown to be surrounded by waste that humans produce. This is exactly showing and describing what Anthropocene is seen to be.

Editing

For these images i did not do much editing. I played around with the brightness and contrast levels but apart from that I wanted to keep it more creative than a fake image.

Outcomes

Relating to Mandy Barkers Work

My final images I took are seen to be describing what plastic and waste products are dong to the small beauty in which our oceans hold. As the rope and debris submerge the flower the image becomes more scruffy and out of place. This is what rubbish in the real ocean would come across to be seen as but even bigger and more.

-Mandy Barker

Both images above are based on the idea of waste that has been abandoned in the ocean. Mandy’s work has been completely created using photo-shop and that is how her images have been made to look as if they are floating around in the ocean in big bundle of waste. Although that is true, even trying to get an image in the best quality to what they look like now would be impossible.

Evaluation

This photo-shoot was quick when coming down to taking the actual images. It was inventive and a different way to explore ocean pollution. These images I took were to raise awareness on how the beauty in which out oceans hold is being quickly destroyed. If I was to do this photo-shoot again I would use different objectives and explore different way in which I cold use photo-shop to create images closer to Mandy’s style.

photo-shoot 1 – Plastic Bags….. relating to VILDE ROLFSEN AND NAOMI WHITE

Plan

To relate to the topic and theme of Anthropocene, I have chosen to do a photo-shoot which explores the beauty of plastic bags but the destruction that they seem to be doing to our world. I will be using the studio in school to take photos and will be using spot lights to create different colours that flow through the plastic. I will be taking photos from the inside of the plastic bags and also the outside but trying to show less of any background.

Contact sheets

Editing

Changing the offset was the main change for many of my photos followed by the exposure on photoshop and on camera.

next for the colour I heightened the vibrancy to get the extra glow on the images. This made the images look as if they were more environmental such as the blue bag above. It replicates the ocean and waves.

finally I cropped out any extra image I didn’t need and played around with the levels of light to make the images seem interesting to look at.

Outcomes

These images above were created using an old plastic bag ripped up with two spot lights either side with coloured gels such as blue and red. I chose to do these colours as I wanted the images not to only look abstract and colourful, but for the image to have a meaning or story behind it. For example, the redness seems to be beating as a heart through the back of the bag which has some sort of destructive energy to it. Then to the left of the images is where the pretty blue crumpled plastic which almost acts like a wave in the ocean. The image is expressing how plastic is effecting the beauty in our world such as a wave in the ocean.

This image above in red clearly relates to the theme of Anthropocene as it is describing the destruction of plastic and how damaging it can be. The red gloomy look makes the plastic looks as if it is deadly and is ready to do damage. The crisp edges seem to be sharp and aggressive.

VILDE ROLFSEN –

As we can see Vilde’s work has more lines and creases that flow through the plastic bag than mine. She has used more light and a high quality camera. But both images has similarities such as the image is taken from the start of the bag, and straight though the inside. Colour has been a big part of Vilde’s work and I can see why as when reflective colour to the inside of a plastic bag it creates beautiful patterns.

Evaluation

This photoshoot turned out pretty well with my outcomes being at good quality and easy to relate to another photographer who explores the same objects with them linking to Anthropocene. If I was to do this photo-shoot again I would take more images than I did and maybe bring different materials into the studio.

photo shoot 2 – binary opposites

Planning and preparation

Contact sheet

Choosing and Editing

To start my choosing process, i chose the photos that had the most similar view point to my reference photos, this was to increase the accuracy of comparing the two time eras. Next, I edited my photos to have the same black and white tones as their partnering photo.

To my surprise, it is clear in most of the comparisons that they are still quite similar to an older era, considering the growing rate of development in Jersey. I like how they turned out, especially considering that due to the development in Jersey, it was difficult to stand in the exact same place as the previous photographers i.e, at Gorey, there is now a shed, meaning i couldn’t get to where the photographer was, so had to stand further forwards, leading the present photo to be closer up.

Experimentation

For my experimentation, I decided to steer off from Rauschenberg’s style of displaying the photos and decided to find a way to merge to two time eras using an altered landscape technique.

Although this is an advanced way to compare the differences, i still feel like the original Rauschenberg display is more efficient as the viewer can see the whole of the two images and not just parts of them.

photo shoot 1 – distorted imagery

Planning and Preparation

Contact sheets

Choosing and Editing

Once I selected my best images from the various techniques, i used various tabs to edit all the photos, supporting an emphasis on the foreground distortion and creating a clearer contrast.

Experimentation

When looking at the photos on the contact sheet, i was afraid that they didn’t go as planned and be really blurry and practically useless, especially with the bubble wrap ones. However, i feel like i did a good job in editing to bring them out more, which i am very happy with. I think my favorite technique is the oil running down glass. I feel that this looks the most

I chose to keep the photos in colour as i find that in black and white, its harder to see the background and it seems too difficult to make out the message i wanted to send with these photo. i also feel like the coloured photos are better as they create a more eye catching and appealing background. However, the black and white photos have more emphasis on the materials in the foreground, making them look more clear and crisp and therefore more effective when coming to presenting how plastics harm and cover the planet.

artist study 1 – nick fancher

Nick Fancher
is a portrait and commercial photographer based out of Columbus, Ohio. His clients include The New York Times, ESPN Magazine and Forbes Japan. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a BFA in fine art photography in 2005. He specializes in a no-frills, run and gun approach to lighting. He began his photography education in high school in 1997. He attended Ft. Hayes High School’s career center for Commercial Photography.

Fancher seems to take an interest to an unusual form of portraiture, this being a wide variety of distorted imagery techniques, using water, oil, plastic bags all incorporated with the model.

Image Analysis

“When Anger Turns to Honey”

This photograph depicts a coloured portrait recently taken by Fancher. The overall feeling from this photo is that the meaning behind it is quite dark and sinister, this can be supported by that dark tones created by low levels of lighting complemented by the dark clothing the model wears. The artificial lighting used is extremely beneficial to the overall mood as Fancher used the manipulation of light intensity to his advantage.

From the title, we can presume that Fancher used honey running down glass to create the dripping, distorted effect. I reckon that he used honey as it has a high viscosity, meaning it isn’t so runny, giving Fancher more time to set the camera up and get it in focus. Looking at it from an anthropocentric view, the honey could resemble oil and the distortion it is bringing to the ocean and sea life.

As the photo has a short field of view, there is a big focus on the model in the center. The way that the tone is so dark contrasts against the models paler face, drawing the viewer attention to the face, where the honey is found in it’s main movement of running in a downwards direction in the foreground.

Contextually, The model in the photo is Chelsea Wolfe, who Fancher was a fan of and has now been in collaboration with her since 2013. This photo was inspired by Wolfe’s song, ‘ When anger turns to honey’ as it complemented his Strata honey explorations. Taken through pexiglass and honey and using only one light. On his blog, Fancher states that his ‘favorite thing about honey is how it refracts light.’

Photoshoot 1 – inspired by Jerremy Carroll

For this photoshoot I have been inspired by Jerremy Carroll for using man made items in his photographs that are used on a daily basis. These items in which he used are usually found in the ocean. Furthermore I am going to conduct a photo shoot using everyday items such as plastic bags as well as use different colour of gels over the studio lights to add dark tones to the photographs.

My Best Images:

Overall I feel as these images in which I have selected are my best as they are mainly focused on the face which may have the meaning behind them of someone suffocating. Whereas in Jerremy Carroll series of photographs called ‘marine pollution’ he has used items such as fishing nets and strings to make the model in which he used look trapped and she couldn’t escape it furthermore I have taken this idea but I have interpreted it in a different way. I feel as these photos are good however I could have used more of Jerremy Carroll ideas to improve my own. I believe that the black and white photographs add more specific details as the blacks and whites add to the overall tone used as well as the overall darkening affect they have.

initial ideas

Photo shoot 1- for my first photo shoot, I will elaborate on my distorted image idea, using cling film, bubble wrap and oil to create distortion. I will use these materials as they are all transparent so the background will be clearer, making the distortion more effective. My artist study will be Nick Fancher as he displays an array of images, using both the oil and bubble wrap technique.

Photoshoot 2 – in my second photoshoot, I will develop the approach of comparing the same locations around jersey from now to over 50 years ago, using photos from Jersey’s photo archives. A perfect example of how I want to approach the idea is the rephotographing Atget project done by Christopher Rauschenberg.

Final Outcomes and Framing

Final Outcome Intentions

Anthropocene – ‘relating to or denoting the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.’

This whole project links to Anthropocene through how humans have affected the ocean wildlife. This is shown through the location and contents of my images. The abstract images induce the viewer to think more deeply then exactly what they can see, and to think about what parts of the image can symbolise. The chain and netting show how fish and other marine life is being trapped and killed through Anthropocene and humans actions.

The intention of these images is to (much like Jeremy Carroll) raise awareness and make people think more about Anthropocene as a whole.

Final Outcomes

I chose these images and this framing pattern because the images compliment each other giving symmetry to the overall display. The outer images are from my second photoshoot, providing earth colours and moody tones. They also are orientated so that the subject of the image faces the centre, large image in the display, this creates even looking outer edges to the display. The centre image is from my first photoshoot and provides colour and texture, while keeping the earth and moody tones.

Shoot 2 Comparrisons

For this photo shoot I took inspiration from both Lilli Waters and Jeremy Carroll. I used this to create Anthropocene themed images with features from Jeremy Carroll with a colour scheme and overall feel of Lilli Waters work.

The 'primal' photography of Lilli Waters is defiantly repairing her past — art thy neighbour
Lilli Waters
Jeremy Carroll
My Image

My image, as well as Lilli Waters image was lit with natural lighting on an overcast day. My image is framed closer up than Waters image and us using an aperture of about f.4, Where Waters image was taken from further away with a wider view of the background, also using a more narrow aperture to keep everything in the frame sharp and in focus. Like the first photo shoot, the shutter speed was fairly fast because of the bright natural light and movement of the subject in both images.

I used a similar colour palette as Lilli Waters by having the subject wear light coloured clothes to contrast to the dark earthy coloured background. I used the concept of the subjects hands being trapped from Jeremy Carroll, but used chains instead of bright coloured plastics to match with the colour and feel of Lilli Waters work.

This image represents how humans are endangering marine animals because of the chains restricting the subjects hands. The ‘marine’ aspect is displayed through the location of the photo shoot seen in the background of the image.
