For my main piece, I am creating a photo manipulation to raise awareness about ocean pollution, so I need photos of :
– Rubbish – Fishing Gear (nets, buoys) – Underwater – The sea – The coastal headline – Boats – Rocks
I made a table to visually display all the photo shoots I need to do for my main piece.
ST BRELADES PHOTO SHOOT
I went to St Brelades in the evening when it was clear, and took photos at the end of the beach that the pier was at. Then moved towards Quasine. Firstly I took photos of the boats in the sand, then in the middle of the beach, I took photos of the sea with the horizon in. I plan to make that the surface of the sea in my final piece. After went to the rocky area, and took photos the larger rocks.
BOULEY BAY PHOTO SHOOT
I decided to get more photos, as I didn’t really like the lighting and the reflections of the sunset from the St Brelades photo shoot. Firstly, I started near the island to get photos of the rocks. Then I went to the end of the pier where I got another photo looking out to the sea. Then lots of photos of boats, and there was a man putting his boat into the sea, so I was able to get a clear picture of the bottom of the boat, which had some buoys on. Additionally, I got some pictures of sea gulls, which I could add into the sky. in Photoshop.
RUBBISH / PLASTIC PHOTO SHOOT
I took photos of various waste and plastic items, such as, plastic water bottles, plastic bags, crisp packets, and, cans. Nothing complicated, I positioned the subject in the centre of the frame, and for the items that had weight like plastic bags, I filled with air to make it look like it would be floating, so it would be easier to blend in Photoshop, and not look out of place.
SECOND PIECE PHOTO SHOOT / PLAN / (If I have spare time)
If I have spare time I plan to create a photo manipulation of space. For my photos I need :
– Galaxy – Foreground photo (white house in St Ouens) – Moon
GALAXY PHOTO SHOOT
I would need to go to a place where there is no light pollution. St Ouens would be a good place. I would need to bring a tripod and a camera. The camera settings would be at the lowest f-stop number, manual focus on the brightest star, wide angle lens (35mm), 800-3200 ISO, shutter speed is 25-30 seconds, but no longer as it would create star trails.
FOREGROUND (WHITE HOUSE) PHOTO SHOOT
I need a subject that would be the foreground, I chose the White house. I would need to go when there is natural light, so I went in the morning (10am) as there was good light and no people.
MOON PHOTO SHOOT
I chose to take photos when there was a full moon. I would use the same setup as the galaxy photo shoot, except the lens. I would use a 300mm lens the capture the moon, with a 1 second shutter speed.
Conceptual realism is the theory that abstract universals, unobservable general classes or ideal types have a reality that is independent, equal and sometimes superior to the reality of their individual parts or specific examples.
These images display the “abstract universals” to an extreme extent, almost what someone is imaging or a weird dream.
The first one shows how it can be almost realistic, and this is the style which I will base my main piece on, as well as Dillon Saw and Sebnem Coskun.
HOW IM GOING TO ACHIEVE THIS?
I my case, I am going to create a piece which visualises conceptual realism on the topic of plastic pollution. I will create a crazy concept promoting the negativity of plastic pollution, all whilst staying in the boundaries of when someone sees my work, they ask themselves, “Is that a photo?” and “Is this real?”
Sebnem Coskun is an underwater photographic fine artist, who has recently won the first prize in Nature and Environment category and the finalist award in the Photographer of the Year. As for the category in which she won the award, it is the Asia category.
Coskun won the prize in Nature and Environment category with her image. In her image, she took a diver surrounded by COVID-19 waste in the Mediterranean Sea. So, she took this photo of a Turkish diver last year in the Bosporus Strait (similar to a river).
The goal for Coskun as a photojournalist was to raise awareness about plastic pollution in the seas.
This was the award winning photo :
She has taken many other photos which visualise the plastic pollution in our seas.
SOME OF HER OTHER PHOTOS
ANALYSE
Coskun took this photo in Istanbul, Turkey. She quoted the UNDP’s World Free Diving Record-man Sahika Ercumen, who said, “I’ve been swimming between plastic more than fish in recent years in the Istanbul Strait”
The photo clearly and successfully visualises how much plastic there is in the ocean, by using a underwater dome for the camera. This way you can see under and above the water. This creates a nice contrast between the dark teal of the ocean and the bright white in the clouds.
The composition has been nicely executed, as the underwater part is the main focus it takes up most of the image, compared to the sky. The sky is partially blurred, although this does draw attention to the main focal point the plastic pollution.
There aren’t many vivid colours, except for the pieces of plastic, this helps highlights the main problem, as you notice it first.
Overall, I like the whole concept of the image, as it gives a whole new unique perspective. It successfully highlights Coskun’s main goal, which was to raise awareness about the water pollution as well as plastic pollution.
WHY I CHOSE HER?
Coskun has inspired me to follow her footsteps and create a piece which raises awareness about plastic and water pollution in our ocean. I thought it was a good topic as it is a big part of Jersey’s “lifestyle”, as we are on an island.
HOW IM GOING TO ACHIEVE THIS?
There are many ways to achieve this effect, such as :
Option 1 : I could actually arrange a diver to swim under water and I take photos with a GoPro or underwater camera. I could take plastic props and float/sink them under water (them clean them up after) or, edit them in the Photoshop. However, this is time consuming, could cost money and, the props might not work or the water could be too murky. So this may not be the best way.
Option 2 : I could simulate being underwater, for example, going to a studio, fill the room with a fog/smoke then make the studio light blue, to create the illusion of being underwater. Then hang the props from the ceiling with invisible fish line. Although, they would like they are hovering instead of floating. Also, it would not look identical to the ocean, but its is more creative.
Option 3 : Finally, I could create an almost 100% realistic image in Adobe Photoshop, I would take photos of coastal/beach features, such as, rocks, the sea, buoys, and boats. Edit them, and create an environment to put the images of plastic/rubbish into. Overall, I think this idea is the best, as I have experience at using Adobe Photoshop, and would be relatively easy to get images for.
EXPANSION ON OPTION 3 (FINAL IDEA)
For my final piece, I plan to have a half underwater/ half above water like Coskun’s image I analysed, the under water part would have lots of plastic bottles, fishing equipment (crab nets) and, other rubbish in, and maybe a boat in the centre of the image, as it would help the viewer work out the perspective of the image.
I would use the photos of plastic bottles, nets and other rubbish that I got from my photoshoots. Then, I would add them into the water, after I have made the landscape and sea.
For the underwater shot I would use an old photograph a fish tank/aquarium to get a clearer vision underwater (checked if I was allowed to use it first with Mr Cole), and the above water shot I would go to the beach. And finally put it all together in Photoshop.
WHO IS DILLON SAW? – (1st Artist/Photographer. Altered Landscapes)
Dillon started taking photos to capture beautiful sunsets in full detail that his phone couldn’t. After, he shot mostly landscapes and city-scapes, although he also enjoys portraiture. However he creates unique pieces in Adobe Photoshop by manipulating photos.
This is his Website where he showcases his work and information.
WHY I CHOSE DILLON SAW?
The main reason I chose him was to incorporate his way of work into my work and final piece, with the photo manipulation.
Although, Dillon Saw also focuses on natural landscapes and views, such as waterfalls and space and photos of galaxy’s.
I plan to make a main piece focusing on water/plastic pollution pollution inspired by Sebnem Coskun, but in the style of Saw’s work.
After, I make the water/plastic pollution piece, and still have time, I will create a piece in Saw’s style. I plan to take photos of the stars, galaxy and the Moon, as well as landscapes to create a final altered landscape in Adobe Photoshop, inspired by Dillon Saw, as a secondary piece.
IMAGE ANALYSE
I chose to analyse this image as it displays the fantasy and surrealism aspect that I’m looking to incorporate into my work.
Firstly, this image was created in Photoshop, I estimate the amount of images used in this image to be 5-7. Starting with the hills (maybe the hills in the foreground +1), possibly the tree, the birds, the sky, the Moon, and the stars.
Saw has positioned the two main elements along the vertical centre line, the tree and the Moon. This creates a focus on mainly the moon as the sky takes up most of the image. It being on the centre line allows the moon the take up a larger space in the image, which shows that Saw has thought about composition. This creates a theme and mood, which is a space/galactic, that can come across as calming.
Keeping the calming aspect, the dominant colours being blue and purple is its own dynamic in itself. The colour purple is often associated with power, mystery, and grandeur which links back to space and the never-ending universe. The colour blue represents faith, confidence, and loyalty, which has ties to the planet that we live on, that we see everyday, and are familiar with. The combination of blue and purple creates a sunset/evening scene that shows the transition to night fall that exposes the view into space.
The moon having pointed ends and being brighter then its surroundings, it draws attention to itself and separates it form the calming environment, which is full of natural lines, therefore it contrasts with the prefect curves of the moon. Making the moon the main focus. This creates an uneasy feeling as space is the main focus. The fact that it is in a surreal/man-made, created environment can cause people the think how much of space is unknown, and how we will never know 100% what is out there.
The Anthropocene defines Earth’s most recent geologic time period, whilst being human-influenced and humans impacts on Earth’s geology and ecosystems. Or anthropogenic, based on overwhelming global evidence that atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric and other earth system processes are now altered by humans.
MIND MAP
I created a mind map to visualised my ideas, which helped me create a consistent theme. Water/Plastic pollution / Rising water levels. Possible, Astrology, and how humans have effected the orbit.
But mainly I would like to create an altered landscape, (photo manipulation) that visualises the negative impact that plastic has on our oceans.
MOOD BOARD
I chose images that inspired me of Google and Instagram, based on the topics, the sea and space.
MY IDEA / ACTION PLAN
I plan to make altered landscapes using my own photos. They would convey the impact that man has had on the oceans, and plastic pollution.
I would try to make an image where you can see above and under the water, then edit plastic in it.
I would get the image putting my camera/phone in box then half submerging it, to get the underwater. Or a big fish tank. Then bring it into Photoshop.
Like this :
WHAT ARE ALTERED LANDSCAPES?
It is when you created/change a landscape. Usually done in Adobe Photoshop. They can convey a deeper more complex meaning through imagery, as you are able to mix image together different images by manipulating them. You can make something realistic or fictional/unrealistic.
SEBNEM COSKUN – She is a Turkish photojournalist that has recently won the first prize in Nature and Environment category and the finalist award in the Photographer of the Year. Coskun won the prize in Nature and Environment category with her image. In her image, she took a diver surrounded by COVID-19 waste in the Mediterranean Sea. This fits in with my idea of water pollution!
I chose Coskun to be the main focus, as she has a strong link to the environmental impact side of things, as she won the POY. I am also basing my theme from inspirations from her work, on the topic of plastic pollution in our sea.
DILLON SAW – He focus on altered landscapes and some night photography, this is what I plan to do for one of my final pieces.
On the other hand, I chose Dillon Saw to bring the altered landscapes/photo manipulation aspect into my work. Also, I can make space inspired edits to tell a story through the image.
I used my own style which implements photography (a photo which it took), and 3D modelling in Blender. Then edited it in Photoshop.
I planned to make an image based on climate change, rising temperature, and deforestation.
I planned to use the freedom tree, as was make of metal, therefore it wouldn’t burn in a fire. I chose fire as it was a heat source, which represented rise temperatures. After, there would be no trees, signifying deforestation.
First I took a landscape into Blender, modified it, and changed the land, and scaled up mountains, where I would Photoshop the Freedom tree onto. I added many trees to the landscape. After I added fire to the trees and, put a camera-raw filter the change small details in Photoshop.
This is the final image after all the Photoshop:
It is called, “Freedom Tree 2072”, due to the rapidly increasing changing climate, I created an exaggeration of the future if rising heats is ignored. It is based off of the Freedom Tree in town; my image, which is in the middle of a forest fire. I wanted to show how the man-made, metal tree was not affected by the fire, compared to the burning natural forest around it, with CO2 gasses giving the sky a hazed look, due to the smoke. Hopefully, it can visualise the serious impact of climate change!
I was awarded a prize for this and it is getting featured in an exhibition in, Liberty Wharf on May 13th-15th.
These were the photos that took to represent the “New Topographic’s” on the Highlands/Hautlieu photoshoot.
I mainly took straight-on photos of the buildings and sheds/warehouses around the area.
I used multiple exposure bracketing on some of them to get a more dramatic image.
I edited these images in Photoshop ACR / Camera-Raw.
My favourite is the bottom left image, as there is a contrast between the bright blue sky and the dirty building. And lots of detail in the texture of the metal.
New topographics was a term created by William Jenkins in 1975 to describe a group of American photographers (such as Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz) whose pictures had a similar repeated aesthetic, mostly black and white prints of the urban landscapes, a human-environment with the natural terrain hiding in the background.
What was the new topographics a reaction to?
It was a reaction to the increasingly suburbanised world around them, and a reaction of idealised landscape photography that raised the natural elemental.
Rut Blees Luxemburg – (Case Study 1 / Night)
Rut Blees Luxemburg was born in 1967 is a German-born photographer. Her technique is to take photographs at night, mostly exploring the urban landscape. She experiments with exposure time and low light conditions to get an image that captures the night life in the city.
As you can see, Luxemburg uses warm colours and reflections in water puddles, which creates a unique view of her scene. Also, experiments which long exposure.
Analyses Of One Of Her Images :
All the lighting in this image is artificial, due to it being night time. It seems that there is a tungsten tone in the lights, as there is a orange/red tint on the surface that the light hits. This means that the image has a warm temperature to it, as the colour red is represented by heat. There is also a washed out green colour to the buildings in the back, most likely caused by the reflection of the flood lights on the football pitch. The colours are muted, which gives off a serene atmosphere as it feels abandoned. Although this isn’t the case as motion is captured by using a long shutter speed, this makes it so the car lights show as a long red or white lines; depending on what way the car is driving. Since, it is night the camera will not overexpose the image, as there is no natural sunlight, therefore she would of been using a high ISO, eg 800-3200. There is a high depth of field as all the image is in focus, and also Rut Blees Luxemburg displays a wide range of tonal values, achieved by including and showing a light source and shadows under the overpass. There are many horizontal lines and geometric shapes in the image. The horizontal lines suggest a feeling of rest, because objects parallel to the earth are at rest. In this landscape, horizontal lines also help give a sense of space and attention to the 3D aspect to help visualise that the image was taken from a high place. As she is a tutor at the Royal Collage of Art, this may mean that she has a higher status position over her students, which is why the image is taken higher up.

My Image Comparison To Luxemburgs Image – Venn diagram
Overall, my I really like my image as it captures motion and, I have created a unique pattern with the buses lights. The colours are vibrant and the bus lights are in focus, which is the main focus point in the image. As I used a high aperture the still lights appeared as stars. For composition I go low to the ground the shoot more upwards, the lights from the bus fill up most of the image. The image is balanced and exposed perfectly even thought it was taken at night time.
Stephen Shore – (Case Study 2 / Day)
Stephen Shore’s work has been widely published and exhibited for the past forty-five years. He was the first living photographer to have a one-man show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since Alfred Stieglitz.
He has also had one-man shows, his most rememberable at : Los Angeles; Jeu de Paume, Paris; and Art Institute of Chicago.
In 2017, the Museum of Modern Art opened a major retrospective spanning Stephen Shore’s entire career. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
When he was in New York; in the early 1970s, he sparked new interest in colour photography, and in the use of the view camera for documentary work.
Analyse Of One Of His Images:
This image shows a busy American street in 1975, Shore’s took this image next to a gas station, which had a wide view over the streets. The image is bottom heavy, which means that the viewers eye is directed toward the bottom half of the image, compared to the empty blue skies.
The contrast of a busy, chaotic street and the clam, tranquil mountains in the background, signify the difference between man and mother nature. Even thought the mountains are small they are still present. The fact that the mountains don’t take up a large portion of the image shows that the industrial and urbanising world is taking over natural land.
The main colours in this image are red, blue, and white. That just happens to be a colours in the American flag. It can suggest that Shore’s is proud to be an American citizen, which he displays through his work of photography.
Overall, I think this image mostly basic, with a normal “street photography” composition, that doesn’t use any objects/techniques to grab the viewers eye. The colours are normal, but mostly blues, which gives off a cool feelings, despite being in a desert in Los Angles. Although, I do like how Shore’s has captured the history of America, by including the old cars, and billboards, (not digital).

Final Photos
Analyse–(Shores Vs Mine)
This is my final image I chose, as I feel that it linked to Stephen Shore’s style the best.
Similarly, both the image capture a historical value. My image captures the liberation statue, and Shore’s capturing change over time.
Both, include nature in a build up urban environment. In my image its the flowers in the foreground, and Shore’s its the mountains in the background.
Also, both use vibrant colours, except mine has a more vibrant summer feel. However Shore’s uses a smaller colour range, compared to mine which uses bright yellows and ultra blues.
Overall, I like mine more as there is more of a focus point; being the statue, this is achieved by using a unique composition with the flowers to almost “frame” the statue. To draw more attention to the statue I used a lower aperture to blur the flowers.
It is the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect, for example, new and old, or dark and light.
The first photo I got from Societe Jersiaise, it was taken in 1870 – 1887, by Ernest Baudoux. The website features many photos and information about the history of Jersey.
The second photo I took at Plemont on the 24 February 2021, 10:51:08, as part of my Rural Landscape Project.
Photoshop Display
To create juxtaposition between the images I used Photoshop and overlay them, then align them so that you can see that they are the same image.
I darkened the edges of the image, by using a black brush at 75% opacity.
Overall, I think it shows that the images juxtapose each other, due to the black and white colours of the older image, and the vibrant colours of my image. This is due to the evolution and development of technology. Also the quality of the image in better and more clear.
Firstly, Godwin uses the path as a leading line to drag our eye to the natural mountain scenery. The horizon rests on the top horizontal line, demostrated by the rule of thirds.
The monochrome black and white filter exaggerates the intense clash in the harsh shadows cast by the mountains, that contrasts with the bright highlights of wild grass in the foreground,
The whites in the sky don’t blend with landscape which creates a border between the two elements. This adds an atmospheric and energised mood, due to the steep changes of tonal values, overall it helps contribute towards the dramatic overcast look Godwin was going for.
The mountains on the left gradually get lighter as they disappear into the distance. This gives the image more depth, as the structure of the mountains has less form, which makes you focus on the larger mountains as that is where all the crisp details are.
The Sun acts a the main natural light, which gives off genuine and complex shadows. The reflections in the reservoir also display that it is a bright day, the haze in the distance created due to clarity in the sky gives off a more detailed atmosphere.
