Arnold Newman was a Jewish/ American photographer who was one of the most accomplished portrait photographers in the twentieth century. Moreover, his portraits where environmental meaning that whatever the main focus of the picture was, the focus was taken a picture of in their usual environment, which in Alfred Krupp’s case was his working place. Also, Alfred Krupp was a businessman who made firearms and bullets etc for the Nazis which could have made this a personal picture for Arnold Newman to take. As you can see in the picture Alfred Krupp is staring straight down into the camera lens which makes this picture eerie, knowing that he done this for the Nazis and having a Jewish photographer take his picture.
Technical:
For the technical sides of this picture, the lighting seems to be natural as the picture is very sharp with all the details being crisp, especially on Alfred Krupp which goes to show how he was the main focus of the picture and the background was slightly blurry.
Visual:
Visually you8 can see that the colouring is natural in the picture which goes to show that this picture is raw and most likely wasn’t edited in terms of colour keeping it realistic. The tone would be in the middle between light and dark as you can clearly see the face of Alfred Krupp however, some of the environment in the background is dark due to not having much light. The form of this picture is 3d as you can clearly see that in the picture the environment has depth into it and stricture meaning it wouldn’t be 2D.
Street photography is made for art or enquiry that that features random chances of encounters or incident’s that occur within a public place.
As you can see from the pictures above that have been stated with the names of the photographers, every single image above has their own personal value to them and their own story behind it which makes street photography special because the picture almost becomes a story to tell, due to the pictures being captured in random moments of an incident that has occurred. Moreover, their could be some context behind these images for example, with the Gordon Parks picture on the top right would could imagine what it could be about like maybe people having fun on a hot sunny day, however in reality the picture is a gang fight that was captured in the middle of the streets.
These are iconic portrait images from successful photographers stated up above.
portrait photography or portraiture is a type of photography that is aimed towards capturing the personality of a person or a group of people by having their picture taken in an environment that facilitates towards the person that is getting their picture taken of.
For my finalised images I got inspiration off Alfred Stieglitz in taking pictures of clouds for my image selection in my images being abstract pieces. I chose to get inspiration of Alfred Stieglitz for my final abstract pieces because when I looked at his pictures they caught my attention due to his pictures of clouds looking very abstract in the way the clouds are come across in the pictures for example, some of his pieces don’t even look like clouds although they are due to the contrast of black and white which manipulates the picture into not looking like clouds also, the patterns and repetition of the clouds look very odd making them interesting to look at as you can almost use your imagination in making the picture come across as something else and not clouds.
As you can see from this image of Alfred Stieglitz you can use your imagination to manipulate the picture to come across as something else, with this specific image I think of the clouds looking like fluff that comes out of a puffer jacket or a pillow purely using my imagination on what I think the cloud appears to be.
Finalised Pieces
These are my finalised pieces that I have chosen because I thought they looked best in comparison to my other abstract pictures.
The process I went through in making the first one in black and white on the left was by editing the picture by going onto the levels in order to change where the shadows should have been darker in order for the contrast between the black and white to bounce of each other and then I changed the image to being black and white. Moreover, I would say this picture is the closest to Alfred Stieglitz purely because the picture is in black and white with the shadows are heightened just like his pictures.
As for the picture on the far right, the process of editing that I went through in order to get the image to what it looks like was that I went onto the hue and saturation and changed the picture in having the colours of the picture being a bright blue. Also, I cropped out the image, so it was just the clouds in the picture however, this makes it very abstract as the image doesn’t appear to be a cloud and the bright colours in the picture eliminates the natural lighting or natural shadows meaning it would be difficult at first knowing what the picture is.
Finally, the picture in the middle was made through the editing stage of getting the picture on the left on top of the picture on the right merging it into one. Once that was complete, I went onto the black and white image that I put on top of the blue one and I put the opacity down which enables you to see the bottom layer of the image. After that, I changed the colour of the image in order to make the clouds be highlighted in red to make both images contrast from the colours of red and blue.
Overall the middle picture is my favourite out of the three because of the way it doesn’t look anything like a cloud but maybe a weather report. Moreover, I feel like I have taken Alfred Stieglitz’s style of photography and evolve it in the way that it’s not in black and white which goes to show we are photographers in different time periods and this makes my photograph probably catch the eye of a younger person due to how bright the colours are in the image which makes it stand out from the rest.
I decided in picking these two photographers to contrast and compare their work pieces as both photographers use textures, repetition and patterns in an enchanting way.
Alfred Stieglitz creates patterns and repetition when in the talking of his photos as the clouds create weird patterns and some of the patterns are repeated in the sky creating an abstract look to the clouds.
Whereas, Harry Callahan similarly experiments with these patterns and repetition in his pictures with the abstract pictures he takes of grass and repetition in the photos he has taking of trees being lined up next to each other.
Alfred’s picture on the left contains natural lighting which gives different shades into the patterns of the clouds in the sky making some of the clouds darker and lighter than other sin different regions. Visually, Alfred’s picture is appeared to seem very 2D (flat) as their isn’t much highlight’s of light in the clouds in order for them to appear to be 3D or even clouds moreover, their is a lot of patterns in this picture visually as you can see similar cloud shapes as it appears to be one big cloud with light trying to brake through different segments of the cloud. His purpose and meaning of taking these type of pictures of clouds was that it became an art form for him to take this pictures of the sky and photography quite quickly became an obsession for Alfred as he enjoyed his art form of taking pictures.
Harrys picture on the right was taken from the source of natural light with what appears to be a wide angle aperture being used in taking this picture, this enhances the shadowing and contrast in this image from light to dark tones demonstrating the differences from what appears to be wheat and grass in the picture. Visually the image is contrasted to be 3D as you due to the shadowing giving life to the surface in the picture also, their is repetition in this as you can see their is grass scattered about in the picture giving it a very earthly/ naturalistic appeal to the picture. The context of how Harry would go about in taking his pictures, was that he would just get out of bed and take numerous pictures of things that he thought interested him, this comes across in his picture in my opinion as the picture doesn’t seem to be panned but more of a ‘in the moment’ taken picture.
1). The first step in creating this edit was, selecting the image then copying and pasting it onto the same file.
2). After this, I went onto the canvas size and doubled the width of the canvas to the right side in order to create space for the second image.
3). The I selected the second mixture on the other layer then went onto transform and flipped the image horizontally then flattened the image to make it one.
4). once that was done, I selected the image and copy and pasted it again onto the same file, went onto canvas size again and doubled the hight.
5). This then allowed me to move the copy image, select it and flip it vertically on transform in order to make it seem symmetrical and then flattened the image to make it one
6). Finally, I cropped off the image on any bits that still has some of the canvas showing and then it was complete.
Albert Renger – Patzsch was a German photographer whose photography was cool, detached photos forming a photographic component of the New Objectivity.
In 1925 Albert starting his career in photography as a full-time photographer as a freelance documentary and press photographer. He rejected Pictorialism and experimentation photography who relied on startling technique. In his photographs, he recorded the exact detailed appearance of objects reflecting his early career in science. He felt that the underlying structure of his subjects did not require any enhancement by the photographer. In his book “The World Is Beautiful” he took pictures of architectural and nature to show his clear transparent style of photography.
Alberts photography is black and white which shows the era in which he was taking photos in. Even though the pictures are simplistic being black and white, it can still make an amazing photo as the shadows are enhanced in the pictures making them stand out from the objects moreover, it gives people a focus point on the pictures he has taken as there are no colours involved.
Looking at his pictures, it makes someone think that even the most unattended things in the world that people don’t really pay attention to, can be a mesmerizing photo if you take a focused picture on that object. This is shown in one of his published pieces called “The World Is Beautiful”.

Evaluation
I have succeeded in the craft of taking pictures like Albert Renger – Patzsch because, I have taken pictures in which I edited on making them black and white moreover, the scenery in which I choose where man made and they where repetitive for example, the picture I took with a big layout of bricks that are cemented together.
Looking over my pictures, I can see that their are patterns within my pictures and the arrangement of the certain objects in the Frame. Adding onto this, with the contrast of black and white both elements stand out from each other creating an appealing contrast visually.
Keld Helmer-Petersen was a Danish photographer who liked to experiment with the contrast of black and white expression influenced constructivist artists and their fascination with industry’s machines and architecture’s constructions. Keld’s approach to photography was by and large experimental and explorative. He worked on the boarders of what we consider to be photography. Throughout his career he worked with cameraless photography which was a technique in which objects are placed directly on light sensitive photographic paper. He used to walk down pavements with his head down making discoveries of damaged roads, houses or pavements which resulted in works such as the series Deformationer.
As you can see from Keld Helmer-Petersen’s work, all of his pictures where in black and white having that contrast between the black and white making the object in which he has taken the picture of, really stand out. Moreover, His pictures where flat being 2D and not 3D, meaning that in some of his pictures you don’t really know what the certain object was, having you use your imagination in what the picture could be or even taking a minute or two in realising what the image is for example, when you look at the image with the fire escapes, it could. Come across as just being thick black lines that where sketched onto a white piece of paper.

Edited Photos
The process I went through with making this was that I had all my photos on a separate file and edited them in order to make them have a bold contrast I achieved this by going onto image, clicking on adjustment then I went onto threshold which enabled me to adjust the threshold for my pictures, making the black and white have an intense contrast. After I done this, I opened a new file onto my photoshop and selected my images then copy and pasted them onto my new file, to have my edited pictures on the same file.
Evaluation
The evaluation that I made for my final images that I edited, was that I thought the images came out great involving the technique that Keld Helmer-Petersen uses for his photography. This is because in my images, they are flat and have bold contrasts of black and white on them having the object in any of the images stand out. Moreover, in the image of the Brewery in which I had edited, I thought this came out to be the best edit out of them all as the windows in which where bordered up and the outlines of the building highly stood out due to the building being white, the sky turning out white also made the image appealing as it seems like this could have been a sketch and not a picture.
A contact sheet is a piece of photographic paper on to which several or all of the negatives on a film have been contact-printed. It could also be used for photographers to analyse which pictures they think are best from a photo shoot in order to select from moreover, it could be used to show off a to a person what the outcome of a shoot ones and which pictures are most presentable.
As shown from my photo shoot, I have highlighted with a red square around a picture which ones are most suitable and better presented from the photo shoot of the elements of paper. Also, the pictures in which i have crossed out are the ones that aren’t presentable enough due to either lighting, focus and the angle.
With this task that we were set for taking pictures of pieces of paper, I have 3 different pictures here in which I have selected out of 60 pictures, on the ones that I thought appealed to me the most.
Once I selected the three pictures, I decided to photoshop them in order to change the pictures and make certain aspects of the pictures stand out.
For the first picture I messed around with the exposure in order to make the shadows stand out from the picture having the tones of black and white bounce off each other as the differences in the tones are drastic compared to one another. With this edit I gained more interest into the picture as it doesn’t even seem like a piece of paper anymore but more like a landscape of some sort of rocky terrain. As for the second picture I brought the exposure down in the achievement of having the picture become black and white. This caused the effect of the shadows in the picture to be heightened, making them a lot more visible compared to the original photo. Finally, as for the last picture I edited it from the original and put the gamma correction up which brought out the few colours of the picture. This brings in some depth into the picture as you can see which parts of the paper have more depth than other parts moreover, the shadows in this picture also stand pout as you can see which shadows stand out more than the others like the more scrunched section in the centre of the paper. This picture looks more appealing than the original after editing it because it almost makes the picture seem like it was drawn giving it a cartoon appearance.
