ROMANTICISM

Romanticism

What is the romanticism?

Romanticism was a cultural movement that emerged in England and Germany at the end of the 18th century and spread throughout Europe during the 19th century, until the 1850s. It expresses itself trough literature, painting, sculpture, music and politics.

Der Wanderer über dem Nebelmeer 1818; Germany

The Man Contemplating a Sea of Mist is a painting by the German romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. It is preserved and exhibited at the Kunsthalle in Hamburg. It was composed from 1818 and is, along with La Mer de glace, one of the painter’s most famous works. In the foreground, a man stands on a rock high, his back turned to the viewer. He’s wearing a green frock coat

LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY – INTRODUCTION

Landscape Photography

Landscape photography is capturing pictures of nature and the outdoors to bring viewer into the scene. From grand landscapes to intimate details, the best photos demonstrate the photographer’s own connection to nature and capture the essence of the world around them. The most important thing to know , are the basic camera settings and technical information (like aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and sharpness).

HEADSHOTS- up close

Bruce Gilden

An Iconic street photographer with a unique style,  Bruce Gilden was born in  Brooklyn, New York in 1946. Although he did attend some evening classes at the School of Visual Arts in New York, Bruce Gilden is to be considered substantially a self-taught photographer. Gilden has received many awards and grants for his work, including  National Endowments for the Arts fellowship. In 2015, Gilden published Face.

My Images

Plan :

When/ where : Two different evenings , birthday party and a evening in the beach

Who : I decided to take pictures of my cousins because I think they are perfect for showing strange and funny facial expressions

Final pictures (edited) :

In this shoot I was inspired by Bruce Gilden’s close ups. The image on the left (my image) is the one I find most similar to the work of Bruce Gilden. Since both subjects / models have similar blank facial expressions , which shows that the photo was taken unexpectedly – one can see the honesty in the faces as the models were not prepared. We can notice similar composition, eyes, mouth, forehead almost in the same place. At the hairline both have curly hair, which features organic lines and natural shapes – which are not artificial. There are small touches of similar colors that can be seen in both images like the blue of the dummy and the blue eyes of the girl. Another example is the pink in the clothes of one and the lips and under the eyes of the other.
In Bruce Gilden’s work we can see that he used a flash to take his photo since there are light reflections on the models’ faces. Unfortunately I did not take my photos with a flash but to make up for it I over exposed my photo to have the same effect. And finally the two images contain simple backgrounds, not a great depth of field because the images are very close.

HEADSHOTS – DOUBLE / MULTI EXPOSURES

Double/Multi exposures

A double exposure is a combination of two images into one where one image is overlaid on top of another with an opacity less than full opacity. Often done with artistic intention. In digital photography, double exposures can be made in Photoshop specifically to achieve digital double exposures.

HEADSHOTS – DEADPAN / PASSPORT

Deadpan/Passport

Deadpan as passport portraits show people in their natural state, typically not showing any sort of emotion. They aren’t posed, are not dressed up for the occasion, and seem completely honest. The color of deadpan photographs is commonly de-saturated. While not completely devoid of color, the colors tend to be muted. Some photographs that are recognized for their deadpan photography such as Rineke Dijkstra and Jitka Hanzlová.

Selected

In the end I succeeded in creating what I wanted to do. My model has no expression, shows no emotions and is in its natural state and shows a honest facial expression. I decided to make the image in black and white because even if some photographers choice their deadpan images in color, the color of deadpan is commonly de-saturated.

SELF-REFLECTION-Identity

My first thought are mostly positive since I’m also very content of my work I like my artist research. However I had a lot of stress in the moment, I was very scared when expressing myself and being self-critical since that’s not my strong point. But after all that it went well. I have more positive thoughts because I like how it turned out and of course the relief to have finished just in time. The most interesting discoveries that I could meet in this project were the colors in Photoshop, I learned more about Frida Kahlo that I do not know and the work of Andy Warhol. For me the biggest challenge I had to face was to develop my idea and try to pass my message on my identity. I learned to organize myself more and to manage my time. I also learned photoshop technique and I know I’ll use them again. What helped me progress was asking for help when I didn’t need to have my ideas clearer and it really helped me motivate me. I think my biggest strengths is at the level of creativite and with this project I improved to this level.  If it was to be done again I will focus more on small details because in presenting my work I have several ideas for the photos that I took and unfortunately I did not have the time to infiltrate these small details.

Final images

photo that I chose:

The first two pictures are from the same shoot “Mexican identity”. This shoot helped me demonstrate one of my origins … Mexico. Why did I want to do this shoot? Since I was little my mother shows me this culture which also mine. I grew up with Spanish, Mexican music, Mexicans in their daily life … One of the famous people I knew from an early age was Frida Kahlo. She is a very famous Mexican painter and around the world. I love Frida Kahlo’s paintings. I have always admired the way Frida Kahlo expresses herself behind her paintings. She is not afraid to show her fears nor passion or her pain. I decided to take inspiration from one of her self-portraits. Not to express my feelings but to somehow honour her. To show the great pride of Mexico. The second photo is a way for me to represent the past that’s why some parts are in black and white.

The third picture is from my “multiple cultures identity” shoot. I was very lucky to have grown up Mexican cultures I was able to grow up with two completely different … Austrian and French. So for this project I had to show this part of me because is very important for me. To do that I search for traditional and stereotypes style that represents the countries I grow up in. The first (pink) I chose a short blonde wig for this photo. As accessory a crown of small pink and purple flowers and as clothing a small traditional Austrian shirt. The second one a long black wig, a wreath of large red flowers and as clothes a typical Mexican t-shirt. The third (red and blue) we can notice the famous Parisian beret that I combined with a sweater with black and white stripes. The last photo is to show me how I am, without stereotypes and traditional clothing. What I want to demonstrate with my photos and that I do not always show my cultures outside but they, as always, mentally.

Review and Reflection

I like the rendering of my photos I think I managed to interpret what I wanted to show but if it was to be done again I will focus more on small details because in presenting my work I have several ideas for the photos that I took and unfortunately I did not have the time to infiltrate these small details. What I mean by “small details” is like for example the inspirational image of Andy Warhol I would have liked to have different colours on my hair, my lips really like Andy Warhol the problem is I have think about it too late. Another problem that i have seen in my images especially my first shoot is the light. Many of my photos were quite obscure but apart from that I’m very happy with the result.

multiple cultures identity

Edited

To create these colour effects I used photoshop. To start I had to crop the selected images then paste them on a white sheet for that I had to change the image to layer then the copy and finally the pasted on the sheet. Then when the images were well placed I started with the colour. For that I select a layer then create a black and white mask. The problem is when we create a mask the software selects all the images so to cancel it I double clicked to have the option “create clipping mask” which selects only the chosen image. After that I chose the colour I wanted. But as I wanted the background to be a different colour than me I had to erase the colour on me and for that I use the “brush tool”. In the end to have colour on me I repeat the same process

Comparison

The first thing we notice is that they are roughly the same style just what I was looking for. We can notice the same colours as: pink, purple, red, green and blue. The work of Andy Warhol has several colour contrasts, you can see it on the hair, the skin, the background and the make-up of Marilyn Monroe. On my work I wanted to have a shadow so that when I change it colour, the shadow will change the colour to darker. However we have one thing in common and it is always the same poses what is done on purpose.

editing TESTING

Test1

I decide to put some parts of my body on black and white because for me black and white represent my past, my ancestors…my heritage. The black and white parts makes it nostalgic. It was a fun way to see things differently, it looks like the future who meets the past what makes my identity.

Test2 B/W

Although I prefer my images on colours what I like about this experiences of putting it all in black and white is that this effect creates my pretty dramatic image. it also seems that my images come from the past which could defend my heritage in a way.
