Bayeux Tapestry Research + Artist Refrence – Michael Crompton

Bayeux Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long and 50 centimetres tall that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings.

It tells the story of the events surrounding the conquest of England in 1066 by the Duke of Normandy. Crossing the sea in longships, long cavalcades on horseback, shields and coats of mail, fantastic creatures and battlefields.

It is a masterpiece of 11th century Romanesque art, which was probably commissioned by Bishop Odo, William the Conqueror’s half-brother, to embellish his newly-built cathedral in Bayeux in 1077.

Michael Compton

Michael Crompton has been weaving since the early 1960’s. he had twenty six solo exhibitions throughout the UK and abroad, and his first tapestry studio was in the Weardale, Co Durham village of Ireshopeburn in 1977 until he moved to the area of Morecambe bay in 2004.

His work has developed continually from these early years but has always been inspired by nature, its cycles and seasons with associated colour and textual changes. He uses curved lines to emphasise movement and the passing of time.

In recent years he’s spent more and more time in researching, reading, writing, drawing and painting before moving to high warp frame looms.

As you can see, Compton really makes use of the seasonal colours. For example, the orange correlates to autumn. The impressive factor is how the lines are curved and have a flow like attribute to them. Even thought Compton’s work is more abstract it still embraces the story telling aspect through the use of colours.

NFTs

An NFT is a unit of data stored on a digital ledger, called a blockchain, which can be sold and traded.

A famous NFT is the rainbow cat, Nyan Cat. Which sold for $690,000

The NFT can be associated with a particular digital or physical asset (such as a file or a physical object) and a license to use the asset for a specified purpose. NFTs (and the associated license to use, copy or display the underlying asset) can be traded and sold on digital markets.

NFTs can be sold on sites such as:

OpenSea

SuperRare

Nifty Gateway

Foundation

VIV3

BakerySwap

Axie Marketplace

Rarible

Blockchain and the technology enabling the network have given the opportunity for musicians to tokenize and publish their work as NFTs. This has extended the list of options for musicians and artists alike to monetize and profit from their music as well as other content surrounding the themes of the music and the artists public image. In addition, NFTs have provided the opportunity for artists and touring musicians to recuperate lost income due to the 2020 COVID 19 pandemic which resulted in music industry revenues falling nearly 85%.

NFTs were utilized by artists to increase revenue during the pandemic . In February 2021, NFTs reportedly generated around $25 million within the music industry (in an industry with annual revenue of over $20 billion or .125%).On March 3, 2021, rock band Kings of Leon became the first to announce the release of a new album, when you see yourself in the form of an NFT which generated a reported $2 million in sales. Other musicians that have used NFTs include the rapper Eminem.

At a very high level, most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum is a cryptocurrency, like bitcoin or dogecoin, but its blockchain also supports these NFTs, which store extra information that makes them work differently from, say, an ETH coin. It is worth noting that other blockchains can implement their own versions of NFTs.

CONTEXTUAL STUDY

What is an NFT?

NFT means Non-Fungible Token representing a digital
file/item. Every NFT has its own identity and characteristics, and every digital file can be classed as an NFT. The
metaverse is the complete virtual twin of our physical
world, and it’s the total amount of all the digital assets
that live in the web and on the blockchain, creating a digital ecosystem.

2 LIVES is the first exhibition ever that aims to educate and connect traditional art to digital art
and the finance world to the art world, by showcasing NFTs through their multi-businesses opportunities
to artists, students, curators, collectionists, stakeholders, creators and whoever involved in the NFT space.

NFTs in art- NFTs for artists are the means by which they can create and sell their own art, keeping independence from someone else (a manager or a client) or an institution. This also enables the artist to have complete freedom on their art as they dont have any contracts or requests upon their art.

The metaverse; The metaverse is the complete virtual twin of our physical world, and it’s the total amount of all the digital
assets that live in the web and on the blockchain, creating a digital ecosystem. The Metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, NFTs and the Internet.
You can access the Metaverse through a VR oculus, entering the virtual worlds mentioned before. This is the future of meeting, creating communities, socializing, working and playing.

Some examples of famous NFT and digital artists;

  1. Fewocious- Known as one of the world’s leading digital artists, the 18-year-old has staged multiple successful solo releases, as well as two groundbreaking NFT space collaborations

2. VeeFriends – the name of Gary Vaynerchuk’s NFT collection. He created VeeFriends to bring to life his ambitions of building a community around his creative and business passions using NFT technology and their smart contract capabilities. By owning a VeeFriend NFT, you immediately become part of the VeeFriends community and get access to VeeCon.

3. BEEPLE-  Mike Winkelmann, better known as Beeple, has sold the most expensive digital artwork in history, The First 5000 Days, sold for $69 million. It’s part of an explosion in the market for NFTs — tokens that prove ownership of things like digital art that you can’t even touch

NFT- Statement of Intent & Refined Moodboard

A community of the future will celebrate diversity, equality and inclusion and propose a new digital world; a metaverse where everyone is equal regardless of class, race, gender and age. A digital ecosystem that transcends all virtual identities into a utopia for peace, prosperity and progress.

After making the general brainstorm and mood board, we looked further into the separate subjects. The statement above mentions equality, and being a group of girls we decided to base our NFT work around the subject of feminism. As a group we are going to look into the timeline of feminism, where it began, where it is now and how could it look in the future. However, rather than looking at it as a whole, we will be looking at how women have been presented in the media. We are going to briefly research different movements and feminine activists to get an idea of what was happening outside of the media but will be further explore the presentation of women in movies within the past, now, and of course, the future. As this is only a statement of intent, the following ideas may be changed in some ways but these are our initial ideas: For our 30 second animated video, we would like to create a stop motion that takes us from the past into the future, of a female or females showing the audience how they were presented in certain movies or media across the timelines (this would be either about the fashion, what they were doing or both). Where as for the A2 piece, we would like to create a collage of images, drawings and objects that conveys all the messages of the video.

What is a NFT?

NFT stands for non tangible token which represents  an artwork, an article, music or even a meme. The word fungible is an economic term which refers to a good or asset that can be exchanged for another good or asset of equal value. If something is non-fungible it means it can’t be swapped for something of equal value.
Every NFT has got its own identity and characteristics.  They are bought and sold online and are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos. NFTs are generally one of a kind, or one of a very limited run, and have unique identifying codes.

2 Lives project

The 2 lives project is Jersey’s first art exhibition which connects Art and Finance, through the introduction of NFTs. 2 Lives will consist of a traditional art exhibition, but in the metaverse. The Metaverse is the total amount of all the digital assets that live in the web and is a collective virtual shared space, created by the joining of virtually enhanced physical reality.
The entire project aims to educate visitors about NFTs to present opportunities and ideas to artists, curators, students and creators.

What Is An NFT? How Do NFTs Work? – Forbes Advisor

what is an NFT?

An NFT is a digital asset that represents real-world objects like art, music, in-game items and videos. They are bought and sold online, frequently with cryptocurrency, and they are generally encoded with the same underlying software as many cryptos. They have been around since 2014 and are becoming increasingly popular. NFTs are also generally one of a kind, or at least one of a very limited run, and have unique identifying codes. NFT’s can be attached to anything from an MP3 to a single JPEG image, a tweet, or a video clip.

what are NFT’s used for

Artists no longer have to rely on galleries or auctions to sell their art. Instead, the artist can sell it directly to the consumer as an NFT, which also lets them keep more of the profits. Artists can program in royalties so they’ll receive a percentage of sales whenever their art is sold to a new owner. This is an attractive feature as artists generally do not receive future proceeds after their art is first sold.

cLASS IN eDUCATION

Class is a defining factor in British culture, especially evident when looked through with the micro lens of schooling. School is compulsory in jersey from ages 5-16 and is a shared experience for all jersey citizens however the experience itself is often completely different and varies depending on class and financial status which seems unfair when considering how our education sets us up for later life, whether we are a success or a failure. There is a dramatic difference in the top schools and the bottom which we would like to study through photography and film. In the UK the best universities and schools are mostly only available to the most high-class pupils with the only exceptions for the academically gifted who push through class creating elitist segregation through education that continue to later life. We wish to bring to light this issue by photographing different types of students and schools.

We were inspired by photography and art surrounding the segregation and the civil rights movement particularly Norman Rockwell’s are depicting Ruby Bridges first day at an interracial school. Although we are not tackling race as the social issue for our in depth project, there is an interesting comparison in the way that we segregate people based on social class.
