Studio Lighting Experimental

Original edit, uncoloured

For these images i opened up my original edited photo on Photoshop and used photo filters in image adjustments, selecting each different colour and increasing them to about 80% density. The first three are the primary colours, and the next three are the secondary colours. My favourite colour filters are the warmer tones, like red, orange and purple because they match the pink paint streak on my shirt and warms up my skintone

Here i experimented with different dark filters. First was classic black and white which adds a defined aspect to any picture. I adjusted the contrast, shadows and highlights to the pre-set black and white setting. To invert i only used the invert filter in image adjustments, which gave it an alien, somewhat confusing and odd view. I chose threshold to blacken the image and give a silhouette feel, still with detail. I adjusted the levels and highlights, and made sure that specific details such as the sleeves and shoes were maintained, but opted to have a blacked out face

Chiaroscuro

One use of studio lighting is to create a chiaroscuro effect, similar to Rembrandt lighting. The chiaroscuro technique shadows part of the subject’s face, completely or, mostly obscured by darkness, with other part in bright light. This term is also used in paintings and art, which came hundreds of years before its use in photography.

This is a strong example of the classic use of Rembrandt lighting in classic art. Both of the woman’s face have dark and light areas, and the first lady has her face turned, but still shows a defined circular curve of darkness on her face

Environmental Image Analysis

Igor Stravinsky, New York, 1946

Visual:

The black and white of the image is very common in Ansel Adams work, with dark sharp shades on the walls and piano, with a very clear contrast. There’s no texture as the objects in the image are basic shapes with flat surfaces, not leaving much surface for reflective light. The subjects posture imitates the arms stand and lid of the piano, linking the the subjects environment to himself. The image focal point is the piano, with Igor Stravinsky located in the left bottom corner.

Technical:

The lighting of this image is generally quite bright, seemingly taken with daylight. The image looks generally underexposed, with a high contrast between the soft grey toned walls, and the black piano lid and stand. The aperture has a large depth of field, and the shutter speed seems to be quite short, maybe 1/320 as the image looks quite focused and sharp.

Contextual+Conceptual

Newman liked to capture the essence of his models in all his images, and so chose to have them in their natural environments. Here he had Igor Stravinsky who was an influential composer, and therefore he positioned him by a piano

Environmental Case Study: Arnold Newman

Ansel Adams was born on the 20th or February, 1902 in San Fransisco, California. He is one of the most important portrait photographers in the 20th century, creating iconic black and white photographs that established photography as a fine art. Adams particularly photographed famous people such as Pablo Picasso and Marilyn Monroe.

Lots of his work focused on photography of people in their natural or working environment, where the subject feels and looks most comfortable. ” There are many things that are very false about photography when it is accepted without question,”

Environmental Research

“An environmental portrait is a portrait executed in the subject’s usual environment, such as in their home or workplace, and typically illuminates the subject’s life and surroundings. The term is most frequently used of a genre of photography”

The environmental approach has the subject in their environment be that a work, leisure, social or family life. They are usually taken without the subject fully taking notice of the camera, so that the image shows the true essence of that moment in time. However, some portraits are taken with the subjects staring into the camera to add more depth and meaning. Environmental pictures can have good historical and social significance, as they are primary sources of information.

Environmental photography portrays a strong meaning as it expresses the interests of each individual, in their regular environment, and is a effective photography technique

Candid Edited

Unedited
This was my favourite candid image, as its clear that the image captured a pure, joyful moment . I only edited the lighting and contrast, as i thought the picture didnt need any major changes
Unedited
I made this image black and white as i think it created a causal and classic look, that the moment also exerted
Unedited
For this image i adjusted the contrast and lighting settings, but i also used an app called Picsart to add a thin white outline to the two people in the image, as i thought it added some definition to the characters positions. I like this image because it captured a genuine moment of celebration.
Unedited
I like this image because it captures the chilled vibe of the moment, showing 2 people dancing candidly. I edited the brightness of the lights to add a shine and adjusted the contrast and saturation
