Film Specification

Our Film

Our Film is Called ‘Together’. We want to show the similarities and contrast between the second world war and the current global pandemic that we are in. The way communities have come together and temporary rules have been enforced are similar in some ways to the way of life during the war and especially the occupation in Jersey.

Story Board

We decided to make a storyboard to help settle on ideas and get our thoughts onto paper. By breaking the film up into 6 scenes we could get a clear picture of the structure of the film. We discussed what we wanted each scene to be about and then wrote down some possible shots we wanted underneath. I think that having this story board will help us to be more productive and its good to have a proper plan

Shot List

We divided the shot list into two sections, Archive footage and Footage to film. We went through our story board and wrote down the shots we needed to find on the internet and also to shoot. Each member of our group was given both things to film and footage to find. With our film we want to show the contrast and similarities between WW2 and the current global pandemic that is affecting the whole world. Therefore we want to obtain a good balance between archive footage and shots taken recently during the pandemic.

Film Manifesto

Names:

Tom Peat, Micah De Gruchy, Olly Flavell

Intentions:

We rolled three dice to get three words which we will include in a manifesto’s to inspire a film we will produce, film and edit. The words we got from the dice were ‘Irrational’, ‘Spontaneity’ and ‘Collaboration’. We have the idea to compare the collaboration and coming together of community from WW2 and the 2020 pandemic as well as show the irrational aspects of the pandemic such as not wearing a mask, thinking it’s a hoax and various conflicts against the government including riots. Covid-19 was spontaneous in the sense that it suddenly came in and affected everyone’s lives.

Visual:

We will include archival footage from the war on the frontline and the home front as modern day news footage from the start to beginning of the pandemic including Boris Johnson. we will collect close up footage of people wearing mask and try to show damages to peoples lives and the new spontaneous precautions.

Sound:

We will have audio recordings of Churchills speech “we shall fight on the beaches” with sounds of guns and manufacturing and compare to to modern day with a lack of sound as it is an invisible war. We will include the speech where borris says we go into lockdown and compare it. we will show before and afters such as football stadiums showing it packed and now empty.

Protests + Movements

Suffragettes

The suffragette movement started began in the early 20th century around 1903 under the banner “Votes for Woman’. Unlike the similar movement of ‘Suffragists’ suffragettes believed in ‘Deeds not Words’. They had had enough and found that no one was listening so took protesting to extreme measures. This included being violent, putting bombs in letter boxes, chaining themselves to railings, smashing windows, getting arrested and going on hunger strikes in prisons. However, during the protests many suffragettes were attacked and sexually assaulted by policemen and other men.

Art & ACTIVISM: Identity Politics + Culture Wars

Identity politics:

Open up - The Dutch election suggests a new kind of identity politics | Europe | The Economist

Identity politics is where social matters to do with people’s identity, usually including topics such as homosexuality, race, gender, death penalty, abortion, religion and more are discussed. Laws are created or changed to try and be more inclusive and tolerant of peoples beliefs.

Culture Wars:

Culture wars is the conflict between groups of people (cultures) who have different social views and beliefs. Often topics of culture wars include the government, race, gender, voting, and laws.

Contact Sheet

I am really happy with the outcomes from this shoot. The lighting was really good, I was only in the water for around 20 minutes as the sun was just about to set. I shot everything at f1.8 as the sun was getting low so I wanted as much light getting in as possible. I used a 1/500 shutter because I wanted to get the water sharp.

The top contact sheet is the first selection of the images as I took around 400 pictures. I flagged all the images then went through and unflagged all the photos that were not sharp, not exposed properly, not in focus or badly framed.

The second contact sheet is my favourite images, I stared them from 1 to 3, 1 being good and 3 being the best, ones that I would post on instagram, print or present, I edited them using my own preset as a base then tweaked settings to fit the particular image, I tried to bring out the colours in the water and the sky. The preset that I previously made and used is intended to make the images. look quite cold and moody.

Edit Process

Raw – straight out of the camera
Edited – using Lightroom

I edited this using one of my own presets called Cold Contrast. It adds blue to the shadows making the image feel cold but also adds some yellow to the highlights. I desaturated the blues however to bring the image back to looking realistic. I increased the dynamic range by bringing down the highlights and increasing the shadows. I only very slightly tweaked the whites and blacks as this can ruin some of the image. I added a vignette to bring focus to the person in the image and make it look more moody.

Shoot Plan

WHERE: The Garage

WHO: I am going to photography my dad prepping my motocross bike.

EQUIPMENT/ LIGHTING: I am going to use my Canon 70d + Sigma 35mm 1.4 lens because I will be fairly up close to my dad which means I need a wider lens but the 35 still gives a nice bokeh and lens compression. I am going to use two lights in this shoot. For thee key light I am going to use a godox sl60w continuous light with a round softbox and a honeycomb grid on it. The grid helps to eliminate light spread and just directs it onto the subject, this light also has a high cri rating and is 5600k which will give a natural high quality light onto the face. My other light is a practical light. I am going to use a tungsten desk lamp to work as an accent light to the key light. It will serve as a back or rim light and make the image look authentic with my dad using it as a light source when working.

COMPOSITION: There will be multiple different angles and different shots of my dad doing different tasks. The main idea is to create a moody shot using the key light to create dark shadows on parts of the face and using the practical light to add texture and depth to the image. I will use the 35mm for every shot and will take some tight shots and some wider shots. For the formal environmental portrait I want to get my dad on one side of the frame with the bike lit on the other side of the frame, with the desk lamp as on accent either on a shelf or on the workbench

I love this image because of the framing and the colours. The measuring jug is in the middle of the image, I like how the tungsten lamp in the background has illuminated the gearbox oil which helps to draw your eyes to it. The lamp has also created a rim light on my dads hand. This along with the wide aperture creates separation with the subject from the background.
I like this image because of the amount of background blur there is. Using an aperture of f1.4 and being right up close to the subject it creates a lot of separation from the background and a very shallow focus plane. I like how the dirt on the oil cap really contrasts with the rest of monochrome image. There is also a a bit or rim lighting on the exhaust cone and on my dads nucles.
I really like this image because of the dramatic cold lighting on my dads face along with the contrast from the warm glow on the wall and the tool box from the desk lamp. I like the composition with my dad on the left and the bike on the right. I used a wide aperture of f1.6 in this image to allow as much light in as it was quite dark but also to blur the background adding depth and separating my dad from the background. I think that this is a good environmental image as it shows my dad in his scruffy overalls in the garage which is like his getaway place. The bike adds context to the images as well with. my grandads tool chest in the background being illuminated by the lamp.

Lightroom

For my first stage of editing, I went sorted through 363 images and flagged the good sharp ones with P on the keyboard (white flag) and the unwanted images with X on the keyboard (Black flag). Second I went through and starred the images with 1 star a images that had good angles and eliminating duplicates. I then went through them all again giving 2 stars to the best images. Lastly I labelled the images I would use first with a red label and my second images with a yellow label.

For this shoot I made a preset which I could apply to all the best images from this collection which made the editing process much quicker. Because all the images were taken in a similar environment using the same light and similar lighting angles, applying the edit to all the images worked well and they all look good straight off the bat. I wanted to go for quite a cold look in these images with hints of orange making it warm. I tried to make the images look as much like this in camera by using a 5600k key light and a 3200k colour temperature practical light in the background.

When it came to editing I used split toning to add an orange tint to the highlights and a blue tint to the shadows, this is what made the image feel cold. Because these photos were taken in a garage, I wanted a more grungy and dirty look, I emphasised this by increasing the clarity and texture but not too much so it doesn’t look unreal and too artificially sharpenned. Because of the blue tint in the shadows I had to compensate by decreasing the saturation of the blues to almost 0. I also turned the saturation of magenta and Purple right down to try and get rid of the purple colour fringing that is quite prominent in the images because there is quite a lot of reflective metal surfaces in the garage and on the bike.

Overall, I am very happy with the edit, It accurately captures the vibe and look I wanted but doesn’t look overdone.

Global Context

Describe racism and how racial discrimination over time has led to Black Lives Matter movement.

Racial discrimination has been around since white people came into contact with black or other people of colour. Racial discrimination or racialism is the belief that the human race can be divided into different races based on skin colour, country of origin and other feature that make people different. Racism is the belief that people from different groups are believed to be more important or of higher or lower status than people from other groups. For example: the most common form of racism seen in the world today is the relationship between white and black people. There is still a lot of people that believe and act on the belief that black people are not as important as white people. They believe that whites are smarter, more civilised and superior. Overtime, laws have changed and many people are trying get equality for everyone.
