racism is prejudicing and discriminating a person or a group because of the fact that they belong to a particular ethnic or racial group.
Continued racial discrimination has led to the movement ‘black lives matter’, because people have seen how wrong it is to prejudice a particular group. People have a right to express their opinion, and this movement gives them the freedom to do this. When people come together change will be made.
black lives matter movement is an organised movement peacefully protesting against incidents of police brutality against afro-american people.
Below are my final portraiture images. I have chosen this images due to them being interesting and showing my skill, which i have developed during the portraiture project.
final image one
I have chosen this image for one of my finals as it is a strong image in terms of composition and aesthetics, as there is negative space that draws more attention to the individual. The pose the individual did is also effective, as it allows for shadows to be cast on the face and a more interesting pose than a simple straight on shot. The contrast between the light and dark is also very powerful too. This element was captured by placing a continuous light on individuals face, which only illuminated parts of it, to create strong shadows and bright lights. If I were to take this photograph again, I would try to position the light in a way that would mean that the backdrop was not illuminated as much, as it is a little distracting. Having a darker backdrop would also allow there to be a stronger negative space to draw more eyes towards the individuals face.
final image two
I have chosen this image to be one of my final images because i enjoy the simplicity of the image, which makes it look like a strong image. The horizontal lines along the image add to the overall look of the image and aesthetics. If i were to take this photograph again I would try to get more of the legs in the image to gain more of a full body shot, as i think it would be more interesting for the viewer. This is because at the moment the photograph cuts off at a strange place and looks odd.
final image three
I have chosen this image to be one of my finals as it is creative and includes more than one image doing the same activity. By lining up the photographs in a way to look like they are joined in a way, came to me on the spot, as I liked these images but found they were very similar. However by placing them into Photoshop and playing around with the position of the images, this idea was created. The background colour adds to the creativeness of the image and how fun it is, even though it is only a light colour. I made it a pastel colour so it would not distract from the images. If I were to create this image again, I would try to take the photographs from straight on, so that the hair could flow and connect in a more realistic way.
final image four
printed
This is one of my final images because it clearly shows how peoples identities are comprised of different elements that make the person who they are. By placing them on one sheet makes the images look more effective than displaying them separately. This is because on their own, the images have no story or link to anything. If i were to make this piece again i would try to get more images as the more images the more i could portray my point of how identity is made up of lots of elements.
final image seven
printed
This is one of my final images because it captures and shows the theme of lack of identity. The colours work together well and are eyecatching too, which will draw in viewers. The captions are subtle but do still hold the same power and share the same message as to if there were bold. If they were bold it would distract from the images below them, which would mean that the aestethics and overall look of the image would be lost. The image shows how people change and will lose their identity throughout this process, and this can clearly be seen where the faces have been smudged and the images arent in focus. If i were to make this image again I would try to blur the faces more, as then it would show how the people have been changed. I could also progressively blur the faces to show a change the images, to portray the notion of identity changes.
Below are my final images for the identity project. I have chosen these images because they clearly show the theme of identity and lack of identity, they are eyecatcing and create a question for the viewer of how their identity is made up.

project evaluation
Overall I think the identity project went well, I learnt how to create interesting and eyecatching pieces that hold a message for the viewer to find and interpret for themselves. I consolidated my skills with taking portrait photographs, although they still arent perfect. If i were to do this project again I would try to link to formal identity, passports, and how they do not show our true identity. This is because I think it would look effective. I would also try to take more photographs because then I would have more images to work with and choose from.
Below are the edits i have made relating to lack of identity.
edit one
For this edit, I changed the levels to make the image to be overall alot darker. I then changed the colour levels, so that the highlights would be a particual colour. I then took the smudge tool and smudged a bit of the face, so that it looked abnormal. I then placed all the images on one layer on Photoshop and added a caption over the top, reading “who am i now?”. I made the writing blend into the background by changing the layer type to soft light.
edit two
For this edit I changed the contrast and levels of the image to make the photograph darker and have brighter areas too, so that colour i add later will be more vibrant. I then changed the colour levels to a particular colour. I then used the smudge tool to smudge an area on the photograph. I then placed all the images on a separate sheet on Photoshop and added a caption “what has changed?”. I made the captions blend into the images by changing the layer type to soft light.
Below are the images I am going to edit and display together. These images are slightly blurred and therefore cannot be used as final images but can be used to relate to having a lack of identity.
Below are all the edits I have completed, which are inspired by JOACHIM SCHMID.
edit one
This edit is a mix up of 2 holocaust survivors. I decided to look into the holocaust survivors as I find the whole situation to be interesting and realised that all the people who survived the horrific conditions relate in someway and share a part of their identity. This edit was done as a practice run for the images i was going to take. I had to line up all aspects of the face, so that it looked like they were on person, who shared a part of their identity with each other.
edit two
This edit is also a mix of two holocaust survivors, for exactly the same reason of how i think the holocaust is fascinating, in the sense that these people lived through immense conditions.
edit three
This edit is a mix of my sister and her favourite singer, Ariana Grande. I decided to do this edit because of how much my sister idolises this singer and how she aspires to be like her. Ariana Grande and my sister both share the same star sign, cancer and I feel this links to our identity and how we are as a person.
edit four
This edit is also of my sister and one of her favourite celebrities, Perrie Edwards. I decided to do this mix because of my sister looks up to her and her presence in the media.
edit five
This edit is of my mum and Kelly Clarkson. I decided to this edit because of how much my mum likes Kelly Clarkson and her music. My mum relates to the lyrics of her music. Also my mum has always been said they look similar. Kelly Clarkson also share the same star sign, Taurus.
edit six
This edit is of my mum and Jess Glynne, who is an artist she listens to and likes the music of.
edit seven
This edit is of my sister and Victoria Justice, an actor from my sisters favourite program, Victorious. I decided to do this edit because their personalities are similar, in the sense that they are funny and stubborn.
Here are my contact sheets from my photo shoots for the identity project. I have annotated the images, red (not going to use), orange (maybe going to use) and green (use)
This could look effective because I would place all my images from a group on a document to make one image and scaled it up, as it would definitely show how their identity contains many different aspects, as their picture would be the same but the other side would be different.
collage
This could look effective because i could place all my groups together and it would show how everyone’s identity is different and contains different aspects too. It could also relate to typography, as all photographs will look very similar but just the other half of the face will be different.
small booklet, similar to a passport
This would look effective because it would link to the fact that passports prove your identity, by providing your name, birth date, place of birth and signature, however my images will juxtapose with this notion of a passport. This is because my images are showing how identity is made up of lots of different things such as, music taste, and how identity does go beyond what the passport states and proves.
virtual gallery
This would look effective because it would show what my work would look like in a gallery. It could mean that i could place images near each other in order to show my thought process and how i want the viewers to feel.
which idea i am going to use?
i have decided to display my images in a small book, which will be held in an old passport. I have decided with this idea as it directly links to identity, and how each of my edits will show what someones identity is composed up off and different compared to the formality of what a passport displays. Using a photobook would also allow my to have all my images together and each will be able influence each other.
to be show that you are the correct person and are not pretending to be someone you are not, identity fraud.
do people pretend/act as someone they are not?
some people pretend to be someone they are not, this is because social media influences us to be different, to want to change who we are to be perceived in a better light.
how am i going to use identification sources in my images
use peoples id for the other half of the photograph, to highlight how people can be identified by professionals
get people to hold their id, to highlight how they are held back by their identity source
use passports as a display method, as it directly links to identity
Below are my two final images from tableau vivant shoot. I have chosen these images because they portray the notion of how women stereotypically act in the public eye.
final image one
I have chosen this to be one of my final images because it portrays how women shop, by being very thoughtful and making the time an experience. Women are supposed to enjoy shopping and have a good time while out in the shops. I enjoy to candidness of the photograph and how natural it looks for the viewer. I like the warmth of the colours in the image and how they relate to the happy feeling a shopper has while shopping. If i were to take this photograph again, I would try to get more of the body in and position myself in a better place, so that the shelf would not be in the shot, because it does distract from the individual in the photograph.
final image two
I have chosen this to be one of my final images because I also think it relates to stereotypical things women enjoy, eg shopping, clothes and shoes. In the media women are portrayed to enjoy girly things and this photograph definitely epitomises this notion. I enjoy how staged this image is and it truly shows how the individual feels about the shoe. The background of the image really links to the stereotypical shoe shop, with lots of shoes that are very high end and expensive. If i were to take this photograph again I would try to get more of the background of the shoe shop in the photograph, as i feel it would improve the overall feel of the photograph. I would also try to centre the individual to improve the overall aesthetics of the image.
whole shoot evaluation
Overall I think this shoot had a few strong images that relate to my predetermined idea for the shoot. However I did feel that i truly was passionate about the images I was taking as the tableau vivant project didnt really inspire me to be creative. If i were to do this whole shoot again, I would try not to rush the image taking process and take photographs that really are interesting to me and inspire me to take more of these sorts of images.
