For this shoot i decided to go onto a families farm at around 5 in the evening. I decided to turn up un invited in order to capture the raw emotion of these farmers. The farmers had filthy clothes from hours of hard work. I decided to enhance the colors of the photos to add detail into there muddy clothes.
Inspiration
for my farm shoot i was inspired by Arnold Newman. newmans photography captured the raw emotion of his subjects and their surroundings. This was something I tried to convey in my photos. I wanted to capture the farmers around the potatoes however was more clutched around the idea of displaying their pride towards their crop. These farmers work tiresome hours to produce these delicacies which we take for granted. I found that using the flash on my camera helped composed the true feelings they had As it gave the subjects less time to put on a fake expression.
I choose this old lady as a subject for my portrait as i felt compelled towards her cigarette. At such a stage in her life where she should be worried about risks towards her health she is peacefully smoking. This is interesting as it makes the audience wonder what events have happened in her life to make her relaxed from a cigarette. Or it could be that she is addicted and needs to smoke to be satisfied. I choose to capture the image close to her and ensuring her hands in the v formation is at focus. I asked her to angle her eyes slightly away from the lens to capture her true emotion. On the second photo i dropped the color to black and white. I felt the tones and contrast showed her wonderful age.
Portrait
I choose Greg as the model as i felt his unique character gave an incredible impression on me. The long hair and bushy beard suggests he is laid back. I wanted to capture his expression by having him glance directly into the camera lens.
I decided to photograph this person as i felt his age and clothes gave a good vibe. He is a mail man at a finance firm in jersey. I found this interesting as all his colleagues were wearing suits and expensive watches but somehow he was chatting to them as if there was no barrier between the mail man and the directors. The cigarette in his mouth was a good focus for the lens. i choose to make one image black and white as it made the image timeless.
IN MY POST I WILL COVER HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON AND HIS INVOLVEMENT WITH PORTRAIT
Henri Cartier bresson
he was born in france on the 22nd august 1908 and died august 3 2004
Henri Cartier-Bresson was a French humanist photographer considered a master of candid photography, and an early user of 35 mm film. He pioneered the genre of street photography, and viewed photography as capturing a decisive moment. Cartier-Bresson was one of the founding members of Magnum Photos in 1947.
Street photography, also sometimes called candid photography, is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. … Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment.
What is the purpose of street photography?
The purpose of street photography is not to record or show what a person is doing but to capture the mood and showing their personal vision of the world.
Martin Parr is a British documentary and street photographer who is often described as the most explosive surprise to ever suddenly emerge onto the subgenre’s scene. Known around the world for his intimate and satirical photographs which focus on different aspects of modern life, Parr usually explores various topics concerning social classes of England and the hypocrisy of the West in general. He concentrates on photographing the mundane, everyday life of people that live just around the corner, enhancing the images with vivid colors by using specific flash techniques. Many have even went as far as describing his work as actual kitch. With almost forty books published and over eighty exhibitions held worldwide, Martin has established himself as one of the most prolific British street photographers. It should be noted that Martin Parr is as well a valuable member of the Magnum Photos organization.
I decided to use the lighthouse as a focus point, while making sure not to place the focal point in the middle of the picture as I felt the picture needed the open blue sky to show the eeriness of the tower.
I changed the gradient map to improve the sense of warmth and get rid of the creepiness. I felt having a warm colour would expose the audience to a sense of love rather than a sense of darkness. The bright tower has a pop art feel and could be interpenetrated by the audience in ways of variety.
