Shannon O’Donell & Claude Cahun

Claude cahun

Claude Cahun is a French Photographer best known for their controversial portraits which helped change the idea of gender as they often wore “masculine” clothing and even shaved their head in a way of rebellion against what society depicts a “women” to be. Cahun was also a writer and sculptor who changed their name from Lucy Renee Mathilde Schwob to Claude Cahun as it was more gender neutral and therefore “neither masculine nor feminine, so there is no good reason to force either of those identities onto them.”. In Cahun’s own words they describe their gender as “Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.”

Claude Cahun (CC) began taking photos in the early 1912 and continued taking self portraits up until 1930s. In 1937 CC settled in Jersey following the occupation in France and Germany. Later on Cahun and Marbelle (CC’s stepsister) “became active as propagandists. Fervently against war, the two worked extensively in producing anti-German fliers. Many were snippets from English-to-German translations of BBC reports on the Nazis’ crimes and insolence, which were pasted together to create rhythmic poems and harsh criticism. The couple then dressed up and attended many German military events in Jersey, strategically placing them in soldier’s pockets, on their chairs, etc.”

Shannon O’Donnell

Shannon O’Donnell is a Jersey born photographer also known for her controversial photography questioning what our society views as “gender” and why. O’Donnell focuses on bringing “to light the inequalities of social standards as well as challenging how we as a society see one another. ” She has many short films and photobooks such as her work in “Shrinking Violet” where she shows her mothers role at home as a women and she questions and almost mocks it as this is what society sees as “women’s expectation”. Her short film “The way the river flows” further questions gender norms and tries to express her feelings towards societies views on “femininity and masculity”

O’Donnell’s inspirations:

  • Claude Cahun – Jewish lesbian photographer best known for self portaits (1894-1954) “take risks and to stand up for what I believe in, no matter how obscure it may seem to others.”
  • Casa Sunsanna – A house free of judgment where many people of different background where allowed to express themselves in any way they desired. (early 1960s) photos taken using Amateur photography
  • Adi Nes – Photographer who grew up in the Israeli/ Palestinian War. Best known for their 100% staged tableaux photography using soft lighting and relaxed photographs which question sexuality and masculinity

identity politics & CULTURE Wars

Identity politics focuses on aspects such as race, gender, sexuality class and more; where these topics are discussed.

Culture Wars: This is a cultural conflict where opposing parties e.g race fight for dominance in their views and beliefs. It targets topics such as Abortion, transgender rights, homosexuality, pornography etc

An example of cultural wars that links to identity politics is the idea of Christian identity. This is were extremists and white supremacists believe they are the superior race and that only their specific kind have value. (this does not apply to all christians but rather a small majority that are extremists)

  • ” all non-whites (people not of wholly European descent) will either be exterminated or enslaved in order to serve the white race in the new Heavenly Kingdom on Earth ”
  • “Anglo-Saxon-Celtic peoples (whites) are God’s real “chosen people,” and descend in an unbroken line from Adam and Eve. They are by nature a superior race.”
Holy Hate: The Far Right's Radicalization of Religion | Southern Poverty Law Center

Another example is the debate of Abortion. People are either Pro-Life (belief that the fetus has rights over child bearer) or Pro-choice (The child bearer should decide what to do with the baby)

Final Design and Layout of Zine

For the front cover I wanted to keep it simple with the initials and Zita’s and I’s first names (Zita and Diana = ZD). I also chose to use a blue accent on the Z as we are both water signs which we both value.

For the first spread of the zine I chose to use an environmental portrait of Zita beside the google definition of her name as I thought this looked quite aesthetically pleasing as its a formal way to introduce Zita to this story.

Here I chose to use items that Zita and I have collected over the years; theatre tickets of a production we watched. In the second image there are bracelets which say Madeira which is Both a country that are our parents are from and hold connection to. I think these photos work together due to the repetition of the orange/red colours.

I used these two figures which both Zita and I own; here Tiger represents me and Winnie represents Zita. I wanted to then add the quote “It’s the little things that bring us together” as I truly believe that; I think that it’s nice to have little memories and tokens that remind us of all the moments that friends have had together over the years that they might have forgotten about but when we stumble upon them again, it makes us treasure the true friendship which we have.

For the middle of the booklet I decided to use this image of Zita looking into the mirror; I think this image works well as it symbolises a moment of reflection; it shows our connection whilst still creating that mystery element that might suggest something is going wrong. As the reality of friendships is that its consists of ups and downs and this image symbolises the worries that friends might have in the fight to keep eachother happy and feel comfortable

For this spread I decided to include an old card that I was given by Zita earlier on in this friendship. I think this is important as I want the audience to feel invested in this friendship and I think that the use of a personal card can achieve this as it helps them see into our friendship and again memories we have made together.

The golden heart of Portugal again connotes to the love and heritage for our past and our families past as we both hold strong values to this. The ring shows another personal memory which I think helps to match the quote of “The items we hold make us cherish what we have” as the memories help us realise the importance of friendships and what wed lose if those friendships were to come to an end

This is the last page spread of the booklet; I chose the image of Zita smiling as not only does it end the book on a positive note but I think it helps to symbolise how no matter what occurs in friendships and no matter how bad times may get; knowing that you can rely on each other and support each other is the most important as it makes you realise how truly important friendship is.

Finally I again tried to keep the back cover simple to match the front; however I inverted the colour from the front cover; I think this works well as the reader is aware that it is the end of story and it keeps the zine looking uote high quality and professional.

Overall, I am quite proud of how far my zine has come as although not all my ideas made it into the zine I think I have managed to create a clear and organised zine where the ideas work together and form a high quality zine with a high conceptual meaning to it which can be up to the audience’s interpretation.

Love

-A noun meaning to have an intense feeling of deep affection; or a great interest and pleasure in something.

To me love means showing affection in a subtle or subtle way, platonic or not. This can be shown in multiple ways, physically; hugging, kissing; through speech, being vulnerable and remembering little things about each other

Representation of which photos I think best describe Love

Love

Henry Mullins – Historic

Henry Mullins first started working 230 Regent Street in London in the 1840s, but then moved to the island of Jersey in 1848. Here he worked in a studio called the “Royal Saloon” at 7 Royal Square. He was in fact the first professional photographer to come to Jersey and found his business in portraiture in the very beginnings of photography his portraits would go for “a fee of five guineas”.

His specialty was “cartes de visite” as the archive contains 9600 photographs which are generally broken down into 16 sets of photographs taken in a single sitting.

Arnold Newman – Contemporary

Arnold Abner Newman, born in March 3rd, 1918 is professional American photographer which was known for his “Environmental Portraits” which he has photographed many artists and politicians. He focused on the idea that an image “must still excite and intrest the viewer”. Here he found his passion through the “empathy he felt for artists and their work.

His work is very particular as he worked close to the environmental theme by “carefully framed and lit setting, and its contents, to symbolise the individual’s life and work”. Newman took his last portrait in 2005 of James “Jimmy” Burrows at the NBC studios; he later dies in June 2006.

STILL TO COMPLETE

Photoshoot Plan

LOCATION: I will be taking photos in Zita’s environment, so places such as her home, the drama and music studios, our school. I will be using artificial light either from school lighting or with flash.

MODEL: I will be using my friend zita for all the shots.

FRAMING: I will be doing full body shots and then upper body shots, here I will experiment with different angles such as low angles to look powerful and normal eye level shots.

LIGHTING: I will generally be taking photos inside so by using artificial lighting such as the school room lights or with a flash; however when taking photos outside I will be taking photos with natural daylight lighting.

FEELING: I want the photos to look and feel professional especially for the Contemporary shoots using influences from Arnold Newman. For my Historic photographer I will be focusing more on trying to replicate his style and the layout of what he has in his backgrounds.

Lightroom: How to

I first started off by creating a folder with a couple images, I also flagged a few images which I liked and thought was going to be useful
I then placed a rating on some of the images I was considering to edit
I then colour corridated them to further cut down on my images
Here this was my favourite image as I coloured green and has 5 stars
This is how I compared my images to then decide which image I preferred, here I liked both these images but placing them in this format really helped to choose some of my favourites
I then went to the develop section to edit my chosen image
Final edited image

Someone you love

For this project I decided to dedicate it to my friend Zita, Here i wanted to show her in her own environment of her home, and school subjects that she likes, I tried to be creative with the editing styles but also stuck with some historical looking images

Edited Outcomes

Enviromental

This has to be my favourite image of the whole shoot as I think the black and white is striking and works well to make this image look high quality and professional, this shows Zita in her environment of her garden and I think gives zita power and she looks strong and confident. i think this matches Arnold Newmans work and it shows my model in their environment and confident, it is also a formal portrait as she knew I was taking this picture of her.

Historic
Historic

These two images is what I came out with from the historic shoot I tried to mimic henry Mullins images with the set up and the use of drapy fabric matches the curtains used in his images. I also added grain to help add a more vintage look to the image

Candid
Contemporary

For these last two images I tried experimenting with different effect, for both images I worked with mirrors for reflection.; but in image one I added a out of focus image to the background to create an interesting frame; and in the second image I blacked out the background to help put Zita as the focus of the image.

2ND SHOOT FINAL OUTCOMES

For this shoot, I wanted to capture the idea of friendship further by getting a group of mine and Zitas friends together in the studio. I used pink gel lighting to help tie in with the idea of love.

Photoshoot Plan

  • LOCATION:At school, in the studio, using artificial lighting such asring lights and normal LED lights with a pink gel cover; using a white backdrop to contrast against everyone’s black clothing
  • MODEL: I will be using our group of friends including zita and I
  • POSING: I will, be using both informal and formal shots to use which are better to there for create some candid and other formal shots
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is image-301-1024x576.png
Smaller selection of images from large photoshoot, here I used thew star rating and use of colours to help me decide

Edited Outcomes

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is P1000590-1.jpg

I like the formal arrangement in this image, however I could never get the editing quite right due to the lighting in this picture so it came out a bit too dark for my liking. I think the fact that the group is wearing black but me and Zita are wearing colours works as it makes Zita and I stand out linking back to our friendship but still showing our relations with other people.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is P1000656.jpg

I really like this image as it captures the fun side of our friendship group and successfully captures a candid and happy side to us.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is P1000682.jpg

I like this image as it’s more intimate but still shows our friendship through the use of the pinky promise as it shows our trust we have for each other.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is P1000711.jpg

I also like this final image as it shows Zita’s joy in hugging me and our happiness when together as friends.
