EDITING – Bunker Archaeology

1st and 2nd edit snapshot

I started with my first edit, by simply flagging the different images as either rejected images of picked images. I then went on to rate the different images between 3 and 5 stars in order to decide which images to retouch. Any images 4 stars and above would be considered for retouching.

Here I experimented using black and white as well as using high contrast. I also adjusted the B&W color levels in order to help make the main subject stand out more.

In photo-montage I digitally recreated some of the photo-montage I created using my prints.

ESSAY – Archives

An archive is a place in which various forms of primary sources for information are stored. This can be in the form of photographs, letters, notes and various other sources. These records are stored as evidence that an event occurred often including an explanation of how these events happened and or why usually for personal or financial reasons. These records are generally accepted to be documents that have been naturally generated as part of various commercial, administrative or regal purposes. Archives make their distinction from libraries in the sense that the documents contained in an archive are typically unique and unpublished documents. As such, archives tend to act as a central location for the storage of various memories and cultures by giving an insight into the lives of those involved with the events surrounding the various documents stored. Photography within archives serves both a documentative and artistic purpose. Photo’s initial take for an artistic purpose can be used as documentation of the artists lives/ surroundings in a different time.

The use of archival imagery will allow me to improve my personal study as it helps give a better insight into the lives of those in the occupation and the time period as a whole. The archival imagery provides a primary source for research about the topic at hand. The use of archives is a resourceful method of research as archives primarily store documentation that isn’t recorded elsewhere, as such it provides fast access to information that would otherwise take much longer to find through secondary sources of information.

Identity and Place – Presentation

I decided to choose white card for my typology as opposed to the standard black card for the aperture as the images are mostly dark around the outside and so the black card would distract from the images whereas the white card allows the images to better stand out. I have dedicated the bottom row to the photos of smaller individual items and the top row to the first photo-shoot. In order for this to work i have cropped all the images to the same aspect ratio, this allows the images to be equidistant to each-other in both axis.

Identity And Place Photo-shoot 2

For the second photo-shoot I had a clear idea of what i was going to do and so it came out rather small, this is because I was simply photographing several smaller items relating to my brothers identity in the style of the typologies of Brend and Hilla Becher. these images in conjunction with he first photo-shoot create a similar effect to the typology work of Rita Puig Serra Costa except without the human subject in the photo. I used the same setting on the camera aside from using a ISO of 100 for some of the images and 200 for the rest since the lighting was much brighter than in the first photo-shoot.

Typologies Research

I have decided that I’m going to present my images in the format of a typography. since a lot of my images in the first photo-shoot are very similar in composition and feature the same subject, I believe that a typology would be a good way of presenting my images and thus I will adapt my future photo-shoots for the project to the format of a typology.

One of the most notable photographers in typologies are Brend and Hilla Becher while there work doesn’t thematically link to mine as they photographed buildings as opposed to possessions however I believe that their work is some of the best examples of typologies available.

Some other examples of photographers that have used typologies as a form of presentation for their work include Zhao Xiaomeng, his work with typologies is also more closely related to mine as it deals with possessions in the format of a typology.

I believe that typologies give the photographer the freedom to use a variety of images which is especially helpful if you believe that there isn’t a single image that could properly represent the best of the photo-shoot and convey the message of the photo-shoot properly.

Idris Kahn experimented with the photos of Bernd and Hilla Becher and presented his own take on the ideas of typologies. The images are essentially multiple exposures overlayed over each other. Since the images all come from the same typology they are very similarly composed and thus give an interesting effect with a Gaussian distribution.Image result for idris khanImage result for idris khanImage result for idris khan

Image Selection/ Editing (Part 1)

This Photo-shoot was inspired in terms of composure by the images of Zhao Xiaomeng. I used an ISO of 1600 in these images in order to have some grain in the images while allowing for well lit sharp images without a tripod. All images in this photo-shoot were taken using the same settings apart from the first 4 which were taken using a lower ISO than the other images in the series, as for other settings i used an F stop of 5.0 and a shutter speed of 1/125. All these images were taken using raw images in the CR2 format, this allowed for more options when it came to editing the images in light-room.

My personal favourites of this photo-shoot are photos 4584, 4590, 4592, 4593, 4596, 4598, 4601, 4606, 4608, 4610, 4614.

Below are some examples of lightly edited images

Identity and Place Image Manipulation Example (Photo-shoot 1)

For this image in particular I began in light-room where I most notably adjusted the exposure, contrast and cropped the image, however I did also make some changes to settings such as color temperature and vibrancy. I also made minor adjustments to sharpness and noise reduction settings, this was because although I like the grain created on this image, it looked too heavy in certain areas and in my opinion was affecting image quality.

In photo-shop I only used the selective color tool to reintroduce some of the warmer tones into the whites of the image and increase the blacks in some areas.
