Making a Zene

One of the tasks we have been set before the summer break is to create a zene out of the images we have taken so far. In this post I will be showcasing the layout and the main content of the zene; as going through the entire zene would be long-winded and boring. Therefore I am going to review 8 of the 16 total pages instead.

I have focused on editing the photos in a modern way, as it blends the relics of the past with the present. I have also tried to lay out the zene in chronological order, in terms of the story of the war.

As my front cover I have chosen an edited image of a war memorial. I think it encompasses the entire zene quite well as its a look back at the war.

I started the zene with pictures of guns and artillery, which symbolises the physical conflict and violence of the war.
The next part of the zene contains images more focused on bunkers and the fortifications as a whole.
The next section contains images more focused on liberation, the end of the war.
The back cover is a very bright and colourful photo which symbolises happier and better life after the war. A kind of stereotypical ‘happy ending’.

Editing field trip photos

This is just a short blog post showing how I tried to achieve a vintage, slightly faded effect to the photos I took on the field trip.

This is the original photo I started out with.
Here I have applied the black& white filter to the photo and made some changes to achieve the desired effect. I mainly lowered the value of cyans and blues, but also made minor changes to all the other colour values.
Next I applied the exposure filter and I have increased the offset value in order to make the photo look more faded.
Then I used the Levels filter and applied the ‘Midtones Darker’ preset in order to make the photo stand out more.
Finally, I have used the Curves filter and applied the ‘Lighter’ preset in order to bring the photo back to looking faded after making the midtones darker in the previous step.

Replicating an archive photo

I have tried to replicate a photo from the Jersey Archive in the modern world. I tried to capture more modern items in the photo (Such as modern clothing and accessories) whilst avoiding including aspects which will give away the time this was taken in, such as a car driving past.

This is the original photo which I tried to take at the same place and angle as a photo from the occupation which I saw whilst at the archive visit.
First I have applied the Black & White filter preset to the photo, this is the most obvious step as the photo in the archive didn’t have colour.
Next I imported a frame which will give the photo a damaged/faded effect, which will make it look older and look as if it was taken closer to the time the original was.
I had to paste the frame next to itself and delete the line down the middle in order to make it large enough to fit the photo.
Next I placed the frame on top of the photo.
Then I lowered the opacity of the frame so that the middle white part doesn’t make the whole image too bright.
This is the finished image. I think it does a good job of being similar to the original with a modern twist, but without it being too obvious it is a modern image.

Société Jersiaise visit

To help start off out project we went on a visit to Société Jersiaise. This greatly helped us gain understanding of the topic, and gain inspiration for our projects.

To start off the day we had a presentation about the occupation and liberation of Jersey, and the photographic documentation of it all. We then had a chance to go through recovered old photos and pick out our favourite ones which were later sent to us in digital format.

We had a story-telling activity which involved being put into groups and given a stack of occupation photography which we were tasked to move into an order which we saw fitting. The outcomes of this were interesting as every group took a completely different approach to ordering the same set of photos.

We were then given an hour to photograph interesting war monuments or anything relating to the war in the town area. I have photographed buildings which had existed during the war and still exist today as part of this task. It’s really interesting seeing how the town area has been modernised, yet most of the buildings in war photographs can be easily recognised today.

These are some of the photographs I took for this task:

Final image gallery

I have created a virtual gallery containing my final photos as well as en extra photo to fill out the space.

On the right side are the final pieces that were created in the studio. I have chosen to group them together because they all explore emotions and expression. They are also all composed of similar colours; the third photo along is more colourful than the others but it still has a dark background and has a cold tone which helps it fit in. The furthest away photo was part of this photo shoot but I didn’t include it in my final photos as it didn’t match the colours of the other photos, as well as it expressing a contradicting emotion (hapiness) to the rest of the photos, which primarily express sadness. But I have included it in this gallery as it fits in well enough to be placed next to them. However, it isn’t located on the same plain to show that it is somewhat seperate.

On the left side are my takes on album covers. These are a lot brighter and more colourful than the photos on the other side. In my opinion this balances out the room as a whole, it isn’t overpowered by monotone or colourful photos.

Identity photo shoot

These are my best photos from the two photo shoots which I did for Identity. I focused on personal identity and emotions, this resulted in a lot of double exposures to help portray multiple emotions in one image.

This image wasn’t actually planned, I was editing a photo of my friend Alex and I needed to align two photos so I used the puppet warp tool to do so. When you use this tool it displays triangles to show proportions across the photo, I really liked the look of these shapes so I saved this work in progress version and decided to use it.This is the photo I was editing when I accidentaly created the last one. I cropped out a second photo of my friend  standing in the same spot, but in a different pose and placed it on top of the first photo. One of the photos is in black & white, whereas the other is in colour, this helps portray the different emotions in the two layers. This is a work in progress screenshot of when I cropped out a picture of my friend, before pasting it on top of the other one.

This is another multiple exposure image, I took two photos of my friend standing in the same spot. I’m not too happy with the angle of the first one as ideally I wanted it to look more vulnerable and sad, but the image still works. It shows how we hide emotions, outside we don’t show any signs, but sometimes there is a problem deeper within. This is a lighter take on the ’emotions’ theme, its about expressing hapiness. I cropped out the outline of my friend and overlayed blue/red colours over two copies of it, them lowered their opacity and shifted them to the sides. This gives an old school 3D movie look, and it helps widen the smile and eyes, which are connoted with more hapiness.

This final image is a photo I took of myself, I tried to create a similar effect to the one in image 4 on this post, but my hands were blending in with my hair too much so I solarized the photo. This helped exaggerate me holding up my head with my hands, which portrays more emotion. I also created a copy of my outline, made it black and put it a layer behind to imitate a shadow, this adds darkness into the photo, which also connotes sadness.

Identity photo shoot planning

My chosen theme for this shoot is self expression; how people express themselves through what they wear and how they communicate (facial expressions and body language).

The purpose of this photo shoot is to explore diversity within the community, how people within the same community differentiate themselves from one another, as well as how they react differently to being placed in the same environment and treat identically.

The shoot will take place in the photography studio where I will take photos of my friends in the exact same way; the camera angle and where they are standing will be identical every time, but it will be up to them how they pose and express themselves in the photos. I will also let them decide what they want to wear for the shoot.

They won’t be doing the same leaning pose as here but the shoot will work in a very similar way. The angle and basic setup will be identical but it’s up to the people being photographed to express themselves. The only difference is that in my shoot I won’t make everyone pose in the same way, that will be up to them.
