For my second zine, I plan to use Images which I took at the Jersey War Tunnels and Occupation Objects as I found that these images have been my best from my latest photo shoots. I think including Occupation Objects will be a way of making my zine personal as there objects I chose myself. In order to make it more personal I may include portrait images. I also plan to use relevant quoted from occupation survivor ‘Joan’ who spoke about her experiences in the occupation.
I’m not too bothered on my zine having a set structure to it, however I would like it to have a pattern in the images that are used. Example- Don’t have two images with quotes next to one another.
Evaluation of Zine
To evaluate this zine, I found having the layout which has been organised how allowed me to fully showcase war images through different projects which showcased the relationship of objects with occupation and liberation. To do this I used the app InDesign on Photoshop to create my zine which allowed me to print out my design in the end which I preferred to use than making it myself as I find its more professional for the theme I was representing. I believe I have been able to show my experimentation process when creating the zine, showing ability to plan my image placing effectivily to create a strong conceptual representation. The layout for each page was well throughout out to ensure none of the same images were placed next to each other or quotes which allowed for a well designed zine. Overall, I think my zine is successful in the way which I showcase my images in the zine as well as my strong imagery from most aspects in the project.
For my first design, i created a division between having have of my booklet on occupation, and the other half on liberation. I stuck to the typical 16 page A5 booklet which i created on InDesign and was set up in portrait style. Although i created this draft and had experimented with have a half and half booklet, i felt as if it didn’t link up very nicely and the two contexts were not very clear and it wasn’t as effective as i would have liked.
Screenshots of my first experimentation is below along with a reasoning of why i made certain choices in the photo book.
Page One and Sixteen
For the front and back of this zine, I decided to keep the design simple with no actual images which I have taken included. As seen I used a dark green colour to cover the back and front of the photo book as my thought is that green is a typical archive colour which is used on websites as well as other photo books I have seen. Although I like the simplicity of this colour as well as it giving off a well-respected vibe to the book I am unsure if I fully love it enough to keep it. I may decide to keep this colour theme going or choose another.
Pages Two- Seven
Due to wanting the first part of my photo book to represent the theme of occupation, I used three of best images from my ‘Jersey War Tunnels’ photo shoot as I felt as if it gave a clear representation of conditions people in the war lived in and guns/ helmets which German soldiers used during the time. These occupation items created a theme of realization, the objects such as the gun allowing outsiders to be put in the position people in the war were in, see things which they had to deal with everyday. As for the image of a living room, I wanted to include this image as I found it interesting as the set up included typical books on the bookshelf seen which are from the occupation, helping to vision household items seen in homes.
Page Eight and Nine
For my fourth page, I created a double page spread which included an image from my still-life occupation objects shoot. This image was created in the style of Rafal Milach and included two bandaid red pots, a book on the occupation of jersey and a real occupation ration pot. These elements were designed in front of a red and blue background with geometric frames also included in the image. This helped to add an element of style into what would have been a plain image.
Page Ten and Eleven
When creating my fifth double page spread, I left the left hand side of the page plain white to create a separation between the two different themes of occupation and liberation but had a simple title at the top of the page stating ‘Liberation’. On the right hand side of the page I included an image of speaker Joan who told us about Liberation Day which she experienced when she was younger, therefore i thought this was an appropriate way to introduce the next topic.
Page Twelve to Fifteen
Experimentation Two- Second Design
I stuck to the typical 16 page A5 booklet which i created on InDesign and was set up in portrait style.
Page One and Sixteen
As seen, on the front of my page I have used a plain white page with a simple title “Occupation VS Liberation” which I liked as it adds simplicity to the front of the book and has no images distracting the title. In also felt like I needed the simplicity again at the end of the Zine and therefore left it the same.
Page Two and Three
I decided to full bleed this image as I thought it is one of my better images included in the book and that it should be showcased. The image also links to the occupation due to including an emergency kit with two pots of bandages and an occupation book. This image was part of my experimentation with Rafal Milach’s photography style, therefore including a coloured background and geometrical shapes which I think added to the image and the subject as the shapes give off the idea of the bandages being trapped linking to the idea that some people couldn’t get ahold of some of these items.
Page Four and Five
For the next page I decided to enlarge the image which was taken in my ‘Occupation Objects’ shoot. As seen, the image includes a British Red Cross Food Parcel as well as some stamps. I kept a boarder on page of this image which can be seen as white. This allowed for me to include a quote if I wanted to use one which can be seen on the top right hand corner. I chose the quote “Each family had a Ration Booklet which included removable stamps which were used to purchase essential food items” as it links to the food parcel as both the quote and image are to do with the shortage of food in Jersey.
Page Six and Seven
This third image is an image which was taken at Jersey War Tunnels and is a set up bedroom representing what a typical one would have looked like. I used this image to cover two pages as a double page spread to represent an actual living room.
Page Eight and Nine
I have included a portrait image of speaker Joan as she was very inspirational to our class and told us on her story of her time in the occupation. During her story she mentioned her mother having a secret radio which can be seen on the page next to her portrait (page eight). On page eight the radio is included as well as an old fashion bike light. I edited both these images black and white so they suited better.
Page Ten and Eleven
Page Twelve and Thirteen
For page twelve I wanted to make it a blank page so there was a separation from the image of page eleven, I liked the design of having a blank page. I arranged the typewriter image which was taken at Jersey War Tunnels to be covering only half of the image as I liked how the boarder around the image blended with the black page next to it.
Page Fourteen and Fifteen
I found that this image looked best spread over two pages therefore I placed it at the end of my zine due to having one similar at the beginning of my zine.
Evaluation
Overall I feel as if my second zine example is more successful than my first due to me learning from mistakes and edits in the first zine. Although the first zine shows more of a narrative than the second, I still do prefer the second due to the specific layout and the overall design of the piece as each image has a reason as to why its been placed there. I have been able to showcase an artistic approach throughout each zine and believe that I will stick with my decision to use my second zine as my final. However, sue to me thinking the white background for the front and back cover is too plain I will use my experimentation one front and back cover as it adds more to the zine.
During my second photographic Zine, I plan to show the relation between the different photographic projects i had completed throughout the last couple of weeks. There will be a relationship shown between both portrait images as well as objects which will mostly be shown through page layouts where i will showcase aspects of the occupation, as well as liberation. I also plan to use one or two images from my ‘Home Sweet Home’ project from the Interior and Exterior shoot to pair with quotes which speaker Joan spoke about as I feel that having a homely background will help relate a quote and make it more personal. I would like the conceptual representation to be underlying in some cases, as well as being explicit which will help create both a clear and experimental narrative for viewers.
Sequencing
During this photo book, I have a desire to keep the layout/ sequencing of the book very simplistic in order for there to be no confusion when looking at the images. I plan to make one photo book with images from different shoots, ie. Joan shoot, Jersey War Tunnels, Interior Home Sweet Home, Still Life Images, and Occupation Objects. I will closely focus on showing a relationship between the different types of images, and ensuring that they all match the same concept as each other is placed on a page together. I will also focus on where the images will sit, either on a full double page, a single page, 3/4 of the page etc. This will also help for different concepts and help for my work to be creative. I have no plan for what i would like to have as my front and back cover, but i do know that i would like a very simplistic introduction to my photo book which will be aesthetically pleasing to look at.
Zine’s are self-published booklets which can made physically or using the app InDesign. Both ways are helpful in the sense that doing a zine physically allows you to cut, stick and glue the images you want in a specific or creative way. However, InDesign also helps to plan out what you layout will look like before printing the images and the booklet. Thoman Paine was one of the first individuals to first introduce the zine where he used it as a way of promoting ideas that contributed to the UK War for Independance.
Zine Artists
Lorenzo Vitturi
Vitturi’s work is known to have a large use of bright and vibrant colors with unusual styled images. He does this in order to create unique images and present his style by using shapes and colours to create a certin narrative/feel to his images.
Mood Board of his work
Sam Ivin
Ivin’s work is seen to include portraits of people with edits of white blurs over their faces to strip them of their identity, helping to create a deep meaning of individualism.
For my photo shoot, i am going to be taking images which have been inspired my Rafal Milach. This style includes bold coloured backgrounds, geometrical shapes as well as objects. I will use his influence of the coloured background as well as the geometrical shapes. These elements will be used to show off the occupational objects, provided by Jersey Archive. These objects will be things such as books on the occupation, old bike lights, bandages, and emergency ration pots.
I also plan to use a Canon Camera on a Manual Focus, set the ISO to 100, as well as the aperture to F16. These settings will allow me to adjust the depth of field, giving me more freedom with my photography. The white balance was on the daylight setting to allow more light in, as well as the shutter speed for the shoot being 0.6. The camera will also be connected to a transmitter which will set off a flash on the two soft box lights, positioned to each side of the objects.

Planning my Editing Process
I am very happy with how my images turned out. However i do feel as if their are elements such as the placing of the objects, and how vibrant the images are needs to be edited in order to make a strong image. I will use Adobe Lightroom Classic to edit my images and will do simple edits. Screenshots of my process will also be shown.
Editing my Images
Best Edited Images
Technical Analysis- I used a Canon Camera on a Manual Focus, the ISO to 100, as well as the aperture to F16. These settings will allow me to adjust the depth of field, giving me more freedom with my photography. The white balance was on the daylight setting to allow more light in, as well as the shutter speed for the shoot being 0.6. The camera was also connected to a transmitter which set off a flash when i pressed the camera setting, allowing the objects to retain light.
Visual Analysis- Visually we can see that the bold coloured colour background has been used which is a typical representation of what Milach used in his photos. Geometric grids have also been used to again show the influence of Milach’s style and they helped add detail to the image. We can see the objects from the occupatin have been edited so that they are seen to be in the middle of the pictures.
Edits- When editing the images, i ensured that the main focuses were in the middle of the image by using the cropping tool on Lightroom. I also changed simple elements such as the Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, etc, in order to ensure that the picture was vibrant enough to be symbolized as a look a-like of Milach’s.
Rafal Milach was born in 1978 in Gliwice Poland, and is known as a Polish visual artist/ photographer. He undertakes large-term projects and is known as a nominee member of Magnum Photos. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice and studied at the Institute of Creative Photography.
He was invited to take part in the Kolekcja Wrzesnia artist residency program and there was when he became part of the children’s protest which had occurred while the Germans occupied Poland. The town became known for this protest as they attempted to change things such as getting rid of Polish from the school curriculum, which led to over 100 children from Catholic People’s school going on strike as protest of their education and schools.
During this time, there were mass rallies do to the government trying to gain more power, which inspired children to march along with the rallies which was an inspiration for Milach’s most well known book, “The First March of Gentlemen”. This book includes photo montages which show the 1902’s children strike, with characters who lived in the communist era. This book allowed him to create archive images.
The Book “The First March of Gentlemen”
The book was brightly coloured and included a long piece of blue string which shut the book together. Inside, lots of shapes and colours which along with the string make it look like a children’s book which was the overall inspiration for the project.
Mood Board of Inside the Book
Photo Analysis
Technical Analysis- After researching about the work, we known that this book was created using archival images with brightly coloured backgrounds. However, we do not know if this has been done digitally or done by hand.
Visual Analysis- Visually, we can see that the man in the image is dressed in black and white which are typically vintage colours which helps to portray the image of an adult. However, the rest of the image is very colourful and the background is half red and half blue. The colouring helps to draw the audiences attention as it is very overpowering. Their has been a geometrical shape used on the outside of the positioning of the man which could be seen as a symbolism of being trapped. The expression on the man’s face is very calm.
Contextual Analysis- This is an image from Rafal’s book which shows political activism.
Conceptual Analysis- Conceptually, a metaphor is being created by the bright colours and shapes in the image which can be seen as quite childish and this is helping to contrast the old, calm man in the centre of the image.
The definition of ‘Interior’ is the inside of something, eg a house. ‘Interior Design’ also relates to this as it is the art/science of enhancing the inside of a building to achieve a healthy and aesthetically pleasing home.
Interior Photographer- Laura Blight
Laura Blight is a visual artist/ photographer who works and lives in London, but comes from Essex. She adopts an intuitive approach to image making where people are absent and she gives a strange everyday look to images. Blight studied at ‘Middlesex University’ 2007-2010 where she got her BA Cons in Photography, and later on went back to study her masters at the ‘University of the Arts London’ where she received a Distinction.
Laura is currently participating in the ‘Collective Strategies’ programme which is based in London, along with the ‘Hemera Collective’ which she was selected for and develops concepts in a group where they all work together to create a new work for the group show, presented in October 2019.
Most of her individual work is about photographing the difference between domestic and undomestic environments in order to create strange everyday images.

Analysation Image
Technical Analysis- Technically we can see that a good quality camera has been used to take this image, as well as a quick shutter speed being used for the photo which was around 1/250 as it is a fully focused image which has no depth of field to it. It is also suggested that a low ISO must have been used as their is no grain in the image. The overall exposure of the image could have also been high because of the amount of light being let into the image, making it a well lit image. It is suggested that a natural lighting has been used for the photograph due to the even colours in the image.
Visual Analysis- Visually we can see that this is a colour image with two chairs in the centre of it, one white and one wooden. A worn out purple carpet is laying on the floor which if you look in detail you can see that it hasn’t been cut very accurately to the wall. They’re is a white and flower print wall paper on the wall , as well as a radiator in the background of the two chairs.
Conceptual Analysis- Conceptually, the two different coloured chairs is suggesting to me the old and new in a house. Due to this project photo being from the project ” House Clearance” this along with this picture are creating a mood of old and new. However, in comparison to the carpet, we can see that inaccurate cutting has been done to the carpet, suggesting the oldness in it.
Contextual analysis- This is an image from her “House Clearance” shoot which is posted on her website, along with other projects.
Planning my Photo Shoot
For my photo shoot I will be taking images with heavy inspiration from the photographer above, Laura Blight. I will look into domestic objects in a household which will be done with a personal manner as I will take the images of my own home. Locations I plan to use will be my bedroom, as well as my family kitchen. Laura’s style includes a lot of white backgrounds and she keeps to an aesthetic throughout her photography pieces, therefore I will follow these elements and have chosen to use my bedroom and kitchen as the focuses of the images as they include a lot of white elements in.
On Laura’s website, she has a number of different titles for different projects of hers, after going through a couple of them I have decided that in order to focus on the ‘Interior’ of a home I am going to follow her photoshoot named “House Clearance”. This project shows plain rooms with a small amount of objects In which helps an convey an image. She uses different depth of fields throughout which also will allow me to be able to have freedom with the photos.
I plan to use Manual Focus on a Canon Camera, due to the location being inside, I will set my ISO to 1600, the F stop to around F.5/F.6. Their will be a shutter speed of 1/250 to allow light into the image which will contrast with the auto focus white balance which will help to create an evenly balanced image. The overall Manual Focus setting will allow for me to have freedom with zooming in and out of objects, as well as experimenting with the depth of field.

Technical Analysis X4 – I used a Canon Camera on a Manual Focus setting, the ISO was set to 1600, the aperture being F.6. There was a shutter speed of 1/250 which allowed light into the image. The white balance was set to the auto setting and I included no depth of field in ant of my images.
Visual Analysis- Visually we can see that there is a white aesthetic in this image which is a representation of Laura’s work. There is also not many unnecessary objects In the image which again is linking to Lauras style as it is very simplistic.
Edits- I mainly made small edits to the image such as the Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, etc. This was all in order to ensure their was an aesthetic going throughout and the images linked to the influences work.

What is Exterior?
The definition of ‘Exterior’ is the outside of something, eg the outside of a house, building.
Exterior Photographer- Robert Adams
Robert Adams was born in 1937 in the location of New Jersey and is known for his photographs of the Modern American West. He revisits the classic collection of nocturnal landscapes which he takes near his home in Longmont, Colorado. He published all images in this area in a book called “Summer Nights” which he started working on in the 70s and was finally published in 1985, 15 years later.
Adams won the Spectrum International Prize for Photography and the Deutsche Borse Photography Prize for his many books. Some of the most well known photographic books of his are ‘Summer Nights’ (1985) , ‘Missouri West (1980), ‘Beauty in Photography (1981), as well as ‘New West’.

Image Analysis
Technical Analysis- Technically we can see that this is a fully focused image, meaning a quick shutter speed would of been used and had a setting of around 1/250. There is also very little grain to the image suggesting a low ISO would have been used. I cannot figure out the exposure of the image due to the black and white edit.
Visual Analysis- Visually, we can see that there is a house on the left hand side of the image and this is an overall black and white edited image. There are also trees and grass included in the image showing nature and also helping to give a dark vibe to the image because of their shadows. The black and white edit used is helping to create light and shade in the picture, showing contrast between the light house which is painted a light colour, with the surroundings of dark trees.
Conceptual Analysis- Conceptually, I think that the use of the black and white effect in this image is allowing for a debate to be opened up around the light and shade.
Contextual Analysis- This image is from the picture book “Summer Nights” which was published by Robert Adams in 1985. The images are taken from around his come in Colorado.
Planning my Photoshoot
After looking at Adams work, I have decided to use his photo book “Summer Nights” as my inspiration for my Exterior images. I will take pictures at night and will experiment with using street lighting as well as flash photography in order to take pictures of my home.
I plan to use Manual Focus on a Canon Camera, due to the location being inside, I will set my ISO to 1600, the F stop to around F5. Their will be a shutter speed of 1/250 to allow light into the image which will contrast with the auto focus white balance which will help to create an evenly balanced image. The overall Manual Focus setting will allow for me to have freedom with zooming in and out of objects, as well as experimenting with the depth of field.
In order to be fully prepared to take my images successfully in the photo studio, i am going to briefly look into the elements needed for a good image.
Lighting– Different lighting points could be played with in order to get the image you are looking for. The lights used could be a soft light, spot light, ring light, hand above light etc..
Recording- When recording/taking the picture, it should be taken from different angles so that you capture different view points of the object. Different angles could include from above, right side, left side, front, back.
Planning my photo shoot
In this photo shoot I plan to take images of object from the Occupation in Jersey which has been gifted by Jersey Archive. Their are many objects to take images of and I will chose a few which stand out to me and which i find interesting due to them symbolising elements in the war. I will use two set ups for my photos, one for flat objects which will be done from a birds eye view, as well as a 3D objects which will be photographed straight on. The set ups will require different lighting points. The overall camera settings I have used is my camera is to be put to Manual focus, the ISO to 100, as well as the aperture to F16. These settings will allow me to adjust the depth of field, giving me more freedom with my photography. The white balance for both will be on the daylight setting to allow more light in, as well as the shutter speed for the 3D shoot being 0.6 and the birds eye being 0.5.
Straight on Angle Lighting Set Up
For this set up I used a fill light illuminating object with an extra tungsten light in order to reduce shadowing and to show the object clearly. I also used a continuous light set up which helped all the elements work together. I used a tripod also with a 50mm lens.
Birds Eye View Lighting Set Up
For the birds eye view set up, I placed two box lights on either side of the table, facing slightly towards where the objects would be sitting and used these as two flash headlights with a 2.0 power output. I used a transmitter on the camera which triggered the flash in the box lights to illuminate the object and capture my image. I was advised to use a pilot light to position my frame and cannot be seen in the image as it is hiding behind one of the box lights, and is located at the back of the table. This didn’t effect the colour of the image. I also used a tripod to hold the camera which I adjusted when needed.
Process of Elimination
Planning Editing Process
Through my editing process, i going to try to make as little edits as possible in order to ensure the pictures don’t look overally edited and still looks realistic. Therefore the edits i used were simple such as editing the contrast, highlights, cropping the photos etc.
Editing my Images
Best Finished Edited Images
Technical Analysis (X3 Images)- I used a Canon Camera on a Manual Focus, the ISO to 100, as well as the aperture to F16.
Visual Analysis- Visually we can see that the objects photographed have been positioned into the middle of the photograph with the help of the cropping tool on Lightroom. There has been a plain white background used, helping the objects to stand out, and this works well with the flash of the soft box lights as it helped to create an aesthetically pleasing image.
Edits- When editing the images I ensured that the images still looked as if they were real objects and weren’t overly edited. This meant that I kept editing on a low and only cropped the image and changed simple elements such as the Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, and Shadows.
“Contemporary Still Life brings together approximately fifty paintings, sculptures, drawings, tapestries, and photographs executed since 1960. The exhibition has been assembled with the intention of encouraging a rethinking of the traditionally narrow definition of still life”.
Laura Letinsky Case Study
Letinsky was born on Winnipeg and is a Canadian comtempoary photographer who is known for her still life photographs and graduated from the Yale School of Art in 1991. When starting photography, she started as a portrait photographer but matured through her photography to working with still life imagery. At present she is working at the Visual Art University of Chicago.
Her images reflect the famous Dutch still life but with a new feel which were described as “ripeness, freshness and decay”. This makes her still life different from Dutch still life, due to hers being more modern because of the elements included. She has said that she uses photography to convey our understanding of relationships and love which could link back to her “ripeness” in her photographs. It has been said that her association with still life associates with femininity, minor art and imbrication within the home.

Analysation Image
Technical Analysis- Technically, we can see that the photograph has been taken with a simple camera setting, allowing conceptual factors to be an important part in the photograph. The shutter speed used must of been quick due to their being no intended blur on the image within the frame. There must have been a low ISO used on the photograph because of the soft lighting seen on the image which has obviously been done with artificial lighting which was created from studio lights. Their is an accurate white balance being used for the environment in. The aperture used in the photograph is seeming to be low because of the large depth of field in the picture.
Visual Analysis- We can see that this is a landscape image with the main focus being on the centre of the image which is a half eaten melon. Their are very monotone colours used in the image which helps to contrast with the yellow/orange melon which is placed in the centre of the image. The background is also seen as simplistic.
Conceptual Analysis- The creased table cloth is suggesting a sense of mess and uncleanliness. Due to Letkinskys work being about femininity, I personally am taking this unclean rug as a symbolism of an unpure women, and due to this being an object I feel as if the image is also representing women as not being objects.
‘Still Life’ are real life objects which are painted with no coordination as to each object. It is a type of art which is seen from the earliest of ancient times and is known as “still even” in the Netherlands.
History of Still Life
In the early 1960s, the genre of Still-Life became popular in Northern Europe and it Dutch and is known to be an independent photography style. The style is originally formed in Dutch and started to become renowned for being concerned with Khar (observation with the natural world). The objects photographed are usually positioned within a frame and create the objects showcased are usually considered to symbolise religion and mortality, reflecting the artists culture. The symbolism is shown through different objects (mirrors, candles, glasses, vases, watches, crowns etc..) all of which can represent aspects such as death, power, human life, as well as wealth and beauty and were all discovered in the ancient burial sights. Therefore, still-life being the composed portray of objects was considered broad and later on they were condensed into sub categories because of the different objects being photographed being different and having a different symbolic representation.
The Romans and Greeks also made a similar form of art which was known as Frescoes which is where they painted on plaster. This art type was modified to include more religious elements, meaning that floral designs become more popular because of them representing areas around the world which are all blooming in the same vase. Moving onto becoming closer to the modern day, this overall technique was adopted by well known artist Van Gough who painted images which included sunflowers, water jugs, as well as wine bottles.
Dutch Still Life Paintings
Dutch still life paintings are famous all over the world due to their depicting objects which have underlying metaphors from the fruits, meats and flowers being pictured. The era these images were taken were known for its wealth, due to exotic luxuries being brought to the country. These luxuries being tobacco, tea, salt, sugar, spices as well as silk. Due to these elements being very celebratory, the Dutches included them into their paintings to celebrate.
Analysing Still Life Paintings
Visual analysis- In this image I can see that their is wealthiness shown in the image from the silver platter/ gold stands which is shown, symbolising richness as it is an exclusive item. The silver/ silk tablecloth has an underlying symbol of power as it seems be quite expensive if silk. Their are lots of food elements on the table, most from exotic countries (lobster, lemon, jackfruit peaches) showing a high social status.
