elaine constantine

Elaine Constantine is a photographer and also a writer and director. She is famous for her colourful and vibrant photos that mainly feature confident women. She is known to shoot for Vogue, i-D, Vivienne Westwood and many other magazines and brands. I like Constantine's work because she captures females and bright and confident characters and I see many aspects of the females in her images that resonate with my younger sisters.

I want to use Constantine's style in my own work to capture when they have fun and are having silly moments. The flash creates a contrast of the skin with the backgrounds and the bright colours of clothing eccentuates the emotions portrayed from the subjects. In my own photoshoots I will use the flash when taking the images and when I am manipulating the images I shall increase the vibrance and saturation to enhance the colours in the photos.

My first shoot plan/ARTIST RESPONSE

For my first shoot I plan to take inspiration from Ariko Inaoka and replicate the third eye image. I want to recreate this as it has a very dream like feel to it and can replicate their unique connection to eachother. To recreate this shoot I will photograph the girls outside because I feel that being outside in nature gives the image a more pictorialist approach and has a dream like effect. We live quite close to a lot of trees so I will probably photograph them there. I will use facepaint to draw the eyes onto their heads. I will dress the girls in either all white or black to have similar outfits and to make the audience focus more on the eyes rather than what they wear. I will take the photograph in the afternoon to have a lot of light in the photo and have lots of exposure to help with the dreamy effect.

ARIKO INAOKA

Ariko Inaoka is a Japanese photographer who photographed two Icelandic twins for 5 years. Inaoka believes that the twins have a telelpathic connections as they are always together, never fight with eachother and claims that she has never seen such a powerful connection between two individuals. One quote that she got from the twins which Inaoka says they tell her a lot is that "We dream the same dreams sometimes". Dreams are individual and unique to every person, it is often the peak of people's imagination as their mind is allowed to freely flow. By having the same dreams indicates an intense connection between the two, leading the mind to imagine that maybe they do have a telepathic connection. A good website for images is the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/gallery/2014/nov/23/ariko-inaokas-photographs-of-devoted-icelandic-sisters-in-pictures

I believe that the eyes drawn on their heads is to connote the ‘third eye’ and Inaoka is trying to make the readers think that they have an ethereal connection aswell as a telepathic bond.

Inaoka uses a pictorialist approach to her photographs, making the images hazy and dream like. I think that Inaoka considers the twins claim that they dream the same dreams sometimes and tries to replicate some of them. I want to use some of Inaoka's techniques in my personal study to portray the intense connection my sisters have. Although they are very different in many ways, they're also extrememly similar and have an unique connection. I will increase the haze whilst manipulating my images to create a pictorialist approach and I also want to use the idea of drawing a third eye on their heads to replicate their telepathic connection.

essay practice

To what extent can we trust documentary photography to tell the truth about reality?

"Reality, witness and point of view can actually blend into one onother." (Bright, S. and Van Erp, H. 2019:18)

The quote above displays how all of these factors can be completely seperate from eachother, a point of view from one side of a story can alter the true reality of an event, however can alighn aswell. The reality is that I have younger twin sisters, they were born premature and were in intensive care for a month, I have then been a witness into them growing up, from baby to toddler, from toddler to child and now they are transitioning from child to teenager. They are still young, a thirteen year old is often viewed as still being a child, but as they're growing up they're being more and more exposed to the realities of the world and beginning to have a cusp of adulthood. As a witness of their development I have my own point of view, their collective identity as twins, the younger they were the more similar they looked and behaved. As babies if one threw up the other would in sympathy, however the further they deveoped the more individual they have become, one is an introvert one is an extrovert, one loves makeup and one is too lazy to do it so prefers a naturalistic look. As being part of a large family there are multiple points of views, my parents my sister Poppy and the twin sisters themselves. All of our points of views can be merged into one, a collective family identity which further melts into our reality and being witnesses to our development in life.

For my personal project I will explore the lives of my twin sisters and although they're seen to be very similar looks wise and personality wise, they're also drastically different. This interests me because the world percieves my sisters as a collective, as one but I want to present them as individuals, they have an exceptionally strong bond but are so different to eachother.

Artists that I am interested in are Sian Davey, in particular, her project on her step-daughter 'Martha'. Davey's is able to capture the lives of both Martha and her friends who are transitioning from child to adult. Davey's also captures a set of twins who are Martha's friends. Davey tends to use a documentative approach to her photography, capturing the natural essence of Martha's development in life. ALthough they look very similar due to them being identical, the audience is able to distinguish that they do have some different characteristics e.g. their different hairstyles and clothing choices. I want to study Davey's work in particular because of her approach to photographing the teenagers, she isn't trying to sugar coat or emphasize their actions, but just want to capture what they do together and how they interact with eachother.

Another artist I will study is Ariko Inaoka. During his travels in Iceland, he came across Erna and Hrefna, identical twin sisters. They have an ethereal bond and are incredible close to eachother. They are very similar and in Inaoka's photographs tend to wear the same outfits. I want to study Inaoka's work because he is able to portray how twins live in their own world. His pictorialistic approach is able to display this. However, I also want to have my own approach to Inaoka's photography, using his pictorialistic approach whilst displaying both the similarities and differences between the twins.

Straight photography and realism emerged in the 1840's and its intent was to showcase the realities of life, not to sugarcoat or maniplulate how the world should be percieved. I want to showcase the lives of my sisters how both they and I view their world, meaning I will use a documentative approach. However, I also want to use a pictorialistic approach to demonstrate how my sisters live in their own world, they see it through a different set of eyes.

case study sian davey

In this blog post I will be researching and exploring the work of Sian Davey, in particular, her project 'Martha'. What I believe I will take from researching Davey's work is how to capture moments in time and how to photograph people from a different perspective. She also happens to feature twins in her project which will give me ideas on how to capture them both as a collective whilst showing their individuality.

A useful website is: https://www.lensculture.com/articles/sian-davey-martha

It features Daveys talking about why she started this project and also features a lot of images from the project.
Twins
This is the image called twins. Although you can tell that the two girls do look similar, I think that Daveys has been able to capture their individuality and show that twins are separate people with separate identities. These two girls do resemble my twin sisters personalities, Scarlett is a lot more like the twin on the lest, tomboyish with her hair down a lot, her expression makes me believe that this girl is strong willed and outgoing as she is boldly staring into the lens which is what Scarlett is like as she is very extroverted. Phoebe represents the twin on the right, her hair is constantly in plaits, and her looking away from the lens makes me believe she is more introverted which is also like Phoebe as she can sometimes be a bit shy towards new people she meets.
Prom
This image is called prom. I really like the depth of field used in this image as although it focuses on the girls doing their makeup in the background, the blurriness of the girl at the front creates a sort of pictorialism feel to the image. I also feel like this image resonates with my sisters because Phoebe loves makeup and doing it on both herself and others. Scarlett isn't very good at makeup and often goes to Phoebe to have her do it for her. The makeup in this image is very simplistic and natural which is often what Phoebe and Scarlett go for as they are only thirteen, still children but starting to grow up. This image also gives me inspiration for my own photoshoots because although this activity is just a day to day activity, it is very intimate and requires the trust of others to alter your appearence and enhance your beauty.
This image will be another image that I will take inspiration from. Me and my family are about to go on holiday to Bali, and we are right by the sea so we will be swimming a lot. Whenever we are on holiday my sisters are always in and out og the water so are constantly lounging about in towels. Although we won't be in a similar environment to this image, I can have my own twist on this image. I like the intimacy in this picture as the girls are very exposed but look so comfortable around eachother. As my twin sisters have such a strong bond, they are very comfortable around themselves so I feel an image similar to this will be able to demonstrate their unique connection and relationship to eachother.

Change in project

I have decided to change my project to focus on the lives of my twin sisters. Twins have a bond that is drastic and can't compare to regular relationships between siblings. My sistersd are also identical twins and people regularly associate them as one person. However, I want to display how they aren't the same person and how although they have many similar chracteristice, they also have numerous differences that make them different characters.

Some artists I am considering to look at is Ariko Inaoka as she focuses on the similarities of tins and their intense bond, and fictional photographers such as Vivienne Sassan and Anna Gaskell.

Invisible hands exhibition

This project shows the the work in jersey, potato picking in particular from the perspective of the migrant workers. They are usually seasonal workers and on minimum or a low wage. Their side of the story is never really displayed, making them almost invisible within the society of Jersey.

The workers have been working in Jersey for around 150 years and have been a crucial part of Jersey's economy and this project wants to show that although they are in Jersey to work, they too are humans with emotions and lives and that the people of Jersey need to treat them as humans rather than immigrants or workers.
