CAROLLE BENITAH

Carolle's work is described as "a subjective interpretation of childhood memories and a refashioning of image and identity".

Carolle often describes her feeling of isolation and alienation when she looks through family photos of her from when she was a child. Benitah began her career as a fashion designer and set out to amend and rework her childhood photos with methods such as cutting, sticking, sewing, collaging. Her extreme minute details that she incorporates displays an almost re-connection and de-connection the the photographic archive to her childhood. Carolle embellishes and embroids her work with thread that is either red, black or gold; also adding beads.

Benitah describes that "The precise and slow process is a metaphor for remaking myself and for the passage of time". She further on explains that "The red thread is a connecting thread, leading me through the maze of my past". Benitah uses the red through her childhood photos. "It's the colour of violent emotions, of blood, and of sexuality."
Benitah uses the black thread for the photos of her in her adolescence. "Adolescence is represented by black for the anguish associated with this period of my life.
The colour gold is used for the photographs of herself during her adulthood. She describes how the colour gold is "the colour of affective ties, of fidelity and of dis-incarnation".

Benitah describes her work as an exorcism, as she explores how the memories of her childhood aids her in understanding the woman she has become. She also believes that the past is never permanent but its constantly being evolved and constructed by the present.

Lighting: I think this image has artificial lighting because the subjects are indoors. The light is probably coming from the side be cause part of the subjects’s faces are in shadow. There’s a lot of contrast in the image because the tones go from their illuminated faces to dark shadows with out much in between.

Visual: There’s an almost symmetrical look to the image. This is because of the lines in the background and how the subjects in the foreground look similar and take up the same proportion of the image.

Conceptual/ Contextual info: The subjects in this image are of the photographer’s grandma and the grandma’s best friend. At the time the image was taken the two subjects had been friends for 70 years. The photographer said, ” They have taught me that friendships and love are what keep you youthful and happy and they are 2 of the most important things in life”.

I like the images in green. To me they represent the same idea that Lewis’ goes for in terms of a day in the life. Some of them also show the generational journey in the way it shows different generations and the difference between them. The ones in red I don’t really like. The first one is blurry and the three in a row is too staged.
In terms of journey these images are important to me because Bingo is my Grandma’s only hobby and she’s been going to that specific Bingo Hall for decades. Back then instead of a massive empty room with hundred playing online, you couldn’t get a seat sometimes. She used to go with her brother but stopped after he died. My Aunt has recently been taking her back to the Bingo after my Grandfather died. What’s also important about these images is how you have three generations in them and you can see the difference between the generations. My Grandma is playing bingo by stamping with a marker like she always has however my Cousin is playing it on an ipad. I like the ones in green because they have good framing and they show what I want to be shown. The ones in red are either blurry or too staged.

Reflection on My Edits

I think my images reflect the photographer’s style. I have taken picture of a family’s journey through a day. I’ve documented events that happened through the day just like the photographer. I made them white because then I could make them sharping by creating contrast and because the photographer edits her images to be black and white a lot of the time. I like my use of depth of field when taking the images because the subjects stand out and there’s a softness to the images.

Second photo shoot – Colour masking photos

This is the editing process of one of the photos from my second photo shoot. It mostly focuses on colour grading

This is the original photo which I used to edit.
First I cropped and slightly rotated the photo. This removes the unwanted empty areas of the photo. Rotating the photo is also important as it helps get the lines in the photo at desired angles. for example, it allows you to adjust a line to be exactly horizontal/vertical or diagonal.

The following three images are screenshots of the steps in which I applied the colour mask to the photo. I did it in steps so that if I made an error I wouldn’t need to start over.

This step isn’t as visible, but I have lowered the opacity of the colour mask by about 20%.
Here I have changed the shade of the colour mount to be lighter and seem more natural.
Here I have lowered the opacity of the colour mask again. Th different shade of blue requires a different opacity to fit well.
This is the edited image.

Second photo shoot – editing the images

This is the image I am using before it is edited at all.
First I have edited the light levels to make the midtones of the photo darker, this make the photo more dramatic and ‘pop’ more. To do this I have just used a preset as it works really well with this image.

Next I have adjusted the curves in order to increase the contrast of the photo. This makes the shapes in the photo appear bolder without reducing the amount of detail visible in the photo. None of the available presets worked the way I wanted them to, so I had to adjust the curves manually. I have adjusted it so that the dark areas in the photo are darker, whilst maintaining the brightness of the bright areas.
Finally I have added a cooling photo filter to the image; which helps make it look more dramatic and aggressive. I’ve set the density to 25% as it has a noticeable impact at this density without overpowering the image with blue. I have chosen to use a cooling filter instead of a warming filter as it matches the shade of white more, as well as working better with the whole photo as it was taken at night.

This is an alternative look for the image I stumbled accross whilst playing around with different effects to use. I have lowered the offset of the image which makes the dark areas really dark and grainy.
As the previous changes made the photo look like an old film photo I have decided to carry on with that look and add grain to the photo; which helps fill in the empty spaces and emphasize the style I am going for.

These are the two final photos I have come up with after editing the original.

Kristen Lewis Information

This is a mood board of Kristen Lewis’ work. Her work is all about family, generational journeys and the journeys we take in our families.

Kristen Lewis is based in Denver and classifies herself as a ‘documentary family photographer.’ Her work centres around families or travel because she is very close to her family and often travels with friends or family. The majority of her work comes from these sessions she does called Day in The Life sessions where she spends twenty four hours with a family and documents their daily journey and what they do for a day.

She’s been using Nikon cameras since 2000 and her dominant lens is the Nikon 35mm f/2.

Technical;
This image is represented in a much darker way rather than just the use of daylight, as the appearance seems much darker and gloomier compared to just a bad and dark weathered day. I think the use of filters were used to present a more texturised and provide a different feeling and emotion towards the image. The aperture used for this image is represented deep, sharp, focused lens due to the raw and precise lines and textured within the image. Due to the darkness of the image its suggest that the exposure is much lower as there is little room for excess light being presented. When considering the color balance and temperature this image to me portrays a much warmer feeling due to the darker colors being filtered in and lack of natural day light.
Visual;

When considering the presentation of the image and the layout it has a strong feeling of organization with the yellow line being perfectly parallel to the pavement this provide an idea of a symmetrical presentation. However the uneven shapes on the pavement set a less aesthetically pleasing vision due to the harsh textured cracked and antithesis of black and white cracks made throughout the tiles. This image clearly shows a high level of textures due to the shows and filters used to emphasis the key details. When looking at this image it is evident that the eye view is from above and give the representation of looking down at the ground through the camera.

Contextual;
Conceptual;

When The Boyle Family first started creating images under a name together they had a similar pattern that they followed and a particular vision they continued to contribute to when adding to the collection following the additional ideas. When producing image, the Boyle Family’s idea is not have a focused subject but aims to make art that does not exclude anything as a potential subject. Over the time this has included things like: earth, air, fire and water, animals, vegetables, minerals, insects, water creatures  etc. In this case I believe this case to be concentrating on possibly the idea of earth looking in different types of ground with the different textures portraying different feeling towards the image.

Contact Sheet for Daniel Antunes and edits

I liked a lot of these images because of their composition and their detail. I also like how in some of the street images the yellow street light reflects in the wet ground and puddles.
The four I circled red together were taken in an elevator so the pictures are blurry and you can see the smudges on the glass. The ones in orange I like but I’m not too sure about. Those are the ones that I need to crop and edit in order to see if they’ll be any good.
The ones I circled in red I didn’t like because they weren’t composed well and weren’t particularly interesting. These are images that I took for my photo shoot two that I believe reflects Antunes’ style. He does a lot of street photography, pictures in the rain and images with a reflective surface.
Antunes does a lot of his edits in black and white.

Romanticism Case Study

Romanticism (also known as the Romantic era) was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century, and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. Romanticism was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature, preferring the medieval rather than the classical.

Caspar David Friedrich was an influential artist from the Romanticism era, his work was based on grand landscapes and making the scene that was in front of him more beautiful than it actually was by adding more vibrant colours.

an example is one of his paintings called Wanderlust.

MY ONGOING RESPONSE TO CHRIS PORSZ

Chris Porsz compares and contrasts old photos that he had previously taken of individuals and retakes the images years later of the same individuals. My plan of action is to find old photos of my family and friends that were taken in my childhood, and recreate those photos to then be able to contrast them as well. My concept is to display how the journey of life shapes each individuals pathways and how each individuals experiences shapes who they have currently become. Although it can be viewed as a dark subject, some of the individuals have passed away so therefore my work will show how their journey of life has come to an end and how the individuals have learnt to deal with the loss. Also how some of the individuals (such as dogs or old friends) have been replaced in their place and how their journey of life has just begun.
