This being my second recreation from the 1990’s I aim to show a different take on the modernizing fashion compared to what I previously looked at.
Background:
For the most of the decade 1990’s fashion was defined by a return of minimalist fashion. While it was not quite as loud as the eighties, the nineties took that attitude and tried to be a little smarter and classier. Common items of clothing brought in were crop tips, silk shirts and denim everything. In the early 90’s several late 80’s trends remained very prominent among both sexes, however the popularity of grunge and alternative rock music helped bring simple, unkempt grunge look into the mainstream. The anti-conformist approach to fashion led the popularization of the casual chic look, that included t-shirts, jeans, hoodies and sneakers, a trend which continued into the 2000’s.
Plan:
For this photoshoot I will have my model pose in the same position as that of the photograph. My model will be wearing loose fitting jeans and a white tucked in t-shirt. For the lighting I will have it placed coming from one side of her rather than both sides like I have with my other photographs.
Sixth Recreation:
Above shows the original advert I am going to be recreating, I feel this is a good advert to recreate as it is simple but I also feel effective in showing a change in fashion and adverts and women. I will be taking the photograph in the studio and use lighting and editing to recreate the photograph.
Above shows the contact sheet of my outcomes from the photoshoot. Overall I feel it has been successful and has worked well. I had my model face the other direction compared to the original as it was more efficient for the lights but also just to have my own variation. Some of the photographs were unsuccessful and were blurry due to shaking or just being out of focus on the camera however I did produce some successful outcomes.
Unedited Best Outcomes:
These I feel are my best outcomes from the photoshoot. I feel that they work best as they are my most clear images but I also think I got the best angles on some of these responses. I also feel that the shadow is working kind of well in the first photograph, I feel it is a little bit strong and harsh in the second and this will be due to my position in front of the subject as well as the lights. I like the last image as it doesn’t have any shadows around it and I feel it is working well.
Above shows the photograph I have chosen to edit and develop, this I feel is my best photograph as I feel it has the best composition in relation to the original advert. I think that the lighting is good and gives me room to work with the photograph and edit it. I think that I am a good distance away from the subject in this photograph as it gives me the ability to edit the image like the advert with having her head come into the boarder and also means she is not too small in the frame or large.
Editing Process:
For the first two steps I adjusted the brightness and placed a pink hue across the whole photograph. I did this to get the pink tones out that the original photograph has and also to make the photograph not so dark. To have the pink show through well.
Next I went and used the magnetic lasso tool and made my way all from the bottom and all the way around my subject and then around the frame, I did this so that I would just have the background of my image selected and then I could go in and make the background an even more vibrant pink to match the original without changing the colours and tones on my subject.
Next I went and unlocked the layer so that I could take the polygonal lasso tool and cut away the top of my image leaving the top of her head out of the frame with a clear background so that I could then move it.
Lastly I created a separate white document that was larger than my image and placed the cut out image on top to give it a white boarder like the original ad, I then cropped down the boarder to get it all the right size and merged the layers.
Final Outcome:
I am happy with the way that my final editing turned out, I feel I have replicated the original photograph as best I can and it has worked well in showing a development of ads and how they’re used which is what I wanted to generate.
This advert that I am going to reproduce of Marilyn Monroe is an advert that has come from a a company named DesignCrowd that began crowdsourcing for freelance designers, it asked its users to photoshop the world’s ‘Most famous and missed pop culture icons’ into modern advertisements and campaigns. Many of the designers submitted several ads with Marilyn Monroe as the face, one of these being the Louis Vuitton advert below.
Plan:
For this photoshoot I will be taking the camera back into the studio, taking a model that I feel will work well with the style of photograph. I will have the model dressed in clothing similar to that of the original. I have a bodysuit able to use for the shirt the original is wearing and access to a suit jacket to have my model wear. I will have them recreate their makeup in a similar way with the use of a red lipstick and enhanced blush to have it resemble the original.
Fifth Recreation:
Above shows the advert I will be recreating in this photoshoot. I will be taking the picture in the studio and will edit it according to how the photographs turn out, this may include altering the colour of the background as there will be a white screen in the studio and the original photograph can be seen to have a blush pink tone in the background of the photograph.
Above shows the contact sheet of my unedited outcomes, I feel many of them turned out well with what I had, one of the struggles that I came across was the access to props in the photograph, I had to improvise with what I had, for example using the bottom of a music speaker to recreate the look of a trunk and a bag that I had handy for the bag on top. Despite this I feel my images worked well as I got a good composition in relation to the original and they are clear and well lit.
Unedited Best Outcomes:
Below shows what I feel are my best images while unedited, I feel these ones had a good range of composition and the lighting is working well. My favourite is the far end image as I feel it works best as it isn’t too close to my subject and has everything I need in shot. I feel the middle photograph could be improved by moving the bag in shot and the first I have the camera slightly far away however compared to all of the outcomes I produced they are my most successful with lighting, clarity and composition.
I have chosen this photograph to work with as I feel it made for the best potential with the facial expression my subject is making as well as the positioning of the camera for keeping her legs slightly out of frame for the purpose of having the best recreation I can. I aim to edit the photograph to give it the grainy tones of the original ad as well as turning it into black and white.
Editing Process:
For the first part of editing I turned the photograph into black and white and then shifted some of the colours so that the shirt turned into a darker black like the original photograph.
Secondly I went and added noise to create the grainy effect, I feel using this has worked well for me in previous images so have used it again to create the effect I am looking for.
Lastly I went through and cropped the photograph so that the subject took up most of the frame as this is what is happening in the original photograph and I feel works best.
Final Outcome:
Below shows my final edited outcome, I feel it as worked well, not as well as some of my previous recreations however I do believe it still works, I feel I have been able to show well a different side of advertising in the 90’s in the ways they represented women, this being due to the facial expression of my subject and the way she is lying which could be seen as sexualised or in a flirtatious manner which is what I was trying to put across which I feel was coming through in the original ad.
Throughout the 1990’s supermodels dominated the fashion industry. In 1994, one year after the following advert was produced, grunge clothing rapidly declined as fashion became more feminine and form-fitting, high-shine fabrics such as satin and silk became very popular. The most common look among young women was to wear the short black slip dress worn over a tight undersized t-shirt. Anna Nicole Smith was not the first Guess Girl, however she is one of the most memorable. The late model’s work for the denim brand helped skyrocket her to stardom and yielded one of the most iconic ad campaigns of all time.
Plan:
For this recreation I will be setting up a sheet of fabric on the studio floor to mimic the idea of sheets underneath my model. For the benefit of my model I am planning to angle the camera slightly differently and have the shirt more closed so not to show anything that may be seen as too revealing. I am going to have my model wear a button down shirt and tights as well as trying to find heals to recreate the outfit in the original advert.
Fourth Recreation:
Above shows the advert I plan to recreate, I have chosen to recreate this as I feel it shows a different side to some of the fashions that dominated the 90’s as it shows that even in a time where denim and grunge dominated women were still advertised as objects and in an overly sexualised way.
Below shows a contact sheet of the outcomes of the photoshoot, I came across some difficulties while doing the shoot as for finding heels and a shirt long enough to cover so the images didn’t turn out exactly how I had expected however I still think with some editing I could produce a good outcome.
Unedited Best Outcomes:
Below shows the three images I feel worked best, this is because I think either the facial expressions or the positioning of the camera is working well for these images. For the first image I really like the facial expression my subject has however I feel that having the trousers on the legs in the images ruins the recreation slightly. The second I feel works well for both facial expression and positioning as you can’t see so much the covered legs so I feel makes for a more accurate recreation. The third is slightly further away however I feel works well for both the angle and the facial expression.
In this photoshoot my artistic aim is to recreate some of the ‘famous’ propaganda which was used during the second world war, in order to showcase another element which was vital for Jersey’s journey through the second world war. I am going to try and capture the images in the style of tableaux photography, where I use similar lighting, positing and poses in order to capture my images. I decided not to focus on costumes as me nor my models had outfits like the actual images, doing this allowed me to focus more on the positioning, pose and capturing and accurate replication. To capture these images I will be using the studio, with artificial lighting. I shall experiment with 1,2 and 3 point lighting and the warmth of the soft boxes in order to create different effects when capturing my models doing the poses. Using the different types of lighting will allow me to use different effects like chiaroscuro, which will allow me to showcase my camera skills and knowledge. I intend to keep the shutter speed at fast, as I do not want any blur, as the images will not be like the original images. However, to show further exploration I may decide to experiment with the shutter speed at the end of the shoot to see what types of images I can create and use for my own propaganda. I kept the ISO low throughout the photoshoot so there was no noise being created, and the aperture was also on a normal setting so the image was not darker nor lighter. My modals face is usually going to be my main focus point and so I will look and experiment with using different depth of fields in order to showcase this. Prop wise I will not be using very many as I wanted to make this photoshoot as simplistic as possible.

Evaluation:
To evaluate this photoshoot I believe I have managed to capture many successful images which shows competence with camera skills in a photography studio. I was able to explore using my shutter speed, ISO and different types of lighting in order to create different effects. I believe that my images that I have captured are very much like the original ones, which shows my ability to follow the style of tableaux photography due to the research I have conducted. Moreover, I managed to think ahead while capturing these images, during the shoot I decided I wanted to make a gif (moving image) of one of my models moving into the pose of the propaganda I was recreating. Due to this decision of mine I managed to capture the first image have my model slightly move and repeat this, as if I was creating a stop frame animation. Not only have I managed to produce accurate recreations I also have produced images which are like Kruger’s work, which will allow me to explore her style in the editing process. One issue that I ran into was getting the model to do exactly what I said, and sometimes my instructions where not clear which lead to poor quality images and models in the wrong pose. However, when I realised this was an issue I ensured that my instructions where much clearer and this resolved the problem.
Action Plan:
As an action plan I intend to use my successful images in photoshop, to further replicate the propaganda I have chosen. Moreover, it will allow me to further explore the style of Kruger’s work and give me the opportunity to explore and utilise my ideas which I have thought of when I conducted the research to see what makes a successful propaganda poster. In addition, I will use the burst of images in order to create a gif of my model getting into the ‘famous’ position, and therefore will have to use a website online to make the gif or make the gif within photoshop using tutorials.
For my third sets of edits I wanted to showcase my ability to use different elements of photoshop in order to showcase further development into the importance of bunkers during Jersey’s journey through the second world war. Due to my top outcomes already looking somewhat distorted I wanted to keep the edits simple but still make them further distorted. My Initial ideas of edits are:
Colour Splash
Blur adjustment
Adjustment of Curves and Levels
Reveal Conceal
For my first experimentation I wanted to use the acetate as an image which was taken back in the war and the bunker behind it as an image taken from now, which begins to present Jersey’s Journey through WW2. The image itself looks as if the acetate is being peeled back to reveal the idea that the bunkers have been isolated since the war and nothing much has changed to them, which successfully allows the aim of the edit to be showcased. To make this idea seem more realistic I used the quick selection tool and selected the acetate part of the image, once selected I pressed ctrl + u and lowered the saturation so the acetate was in black and white and the background was in colour. Then I adjusted the levels and curves to allow detail to be shown within the edit. I believe that this is my top outcome from the photoshoot as it shows clear camera skills such as depth of field, focus, ISO and aperture. It clearly presents the formal elements of texture, shape and space due to the use of camera settings along side the editing use. Moreover, it showcases my ability to use different tool within photoshop in order to manipulate and image to create a certain effect. I really like the way the photograph has turned out as it is visually stimulating to look at and allows Jersey’s journey through WW2 to be presented.
In my second edit I used an image where the acetate was held up to the camera and the shadows of the bunker is found in the background of the image. Already, this image is very distorted so to add to the effect I decided to add a blur to the image which creates texture, almost as if I have raised the ISO on my camera to create noise. The idea behind this is to make my viewers rethink the way the bunkers look and realise the use of them during the second world war, which allows the journey of the subject to start to be presented within the viewers head. I believe that this image is successful as it allows contextual and conceptual, how and why the bunkers where used in the war (presented in a unpleasant way due to the blur and acetate and shadows) and how they have been left alone factors to easily be communicated to the receiver due to the distortion created. This image is also successful as it shows my ability to think creatively and critically towards what I am wanting to capture as well as my camera and photo manipulation techniques.
This next edit is not as successful as the others, needless to say I have decided to keep it in order to showcase my exploration and thought process. I selected this image as it is of the bunker and the massive image of the same bunker that I printed off. The idea was to showcase the size of how large the bunker is, which would metaphorically show how big of a role the bunkers had within the second world war. However, I do not believe that this idea is presented through the edit. I also used a colour splash to create this edit, having half in colour and half in black and white, same steps as the first edit. The final outcome is not great as the edit is not visually stimulating to look at, which is due to the image itself. The way it was taken is not the best as it is clear that I have used the wrong camera settings. In my opinion the conceptual factor is still slightly being presented, but the technical, visual and contextual aspects are not as strong which is making this edit less successful.
The idea behind this edit was to make the acetate blend into the sky, making it seem like a past memory, as I purposefully made the image over exposed. To do this I made this photograph naturally lighter by adjusting the levels and curves, I also cropped the image to take away the bottom of the image, which slightly distracted the viewers eyes. Although, I do like the way it looks I believe that it could have been more successful, there is something to it which is missing or needs changing which is making me not like the edit that much. I think it is due to it looking too artificial which takes away a strong link to the contextual factor. The edit clearly presents the journey of Jersey through WW2 and allows the conceptual factors to be presented, I think it is again the technical element which is lowering the successfulness of the image. Needless to say, I have been able to show my creativity to produce a new concept to present the same ideology.
Evaluation:
To evaluate I believe that I have been able to show my ability to think creatively to produce outcomes to a follow up photoshoot to an idea. I have been able to show clear further exploration to an initial idea and have been able to create links between the images and Jersey’s Journey through the second world war. The images themselves, showcase my ability to adjust and use camera settings to create different effects, and show that I have carefully thought out how and why I am capturing an image in that way. Furthermore, I have been able to show my ability to use photoshop to manipulate my images, using the different tool provided in order to create a stronger link between my photographs and the theme of Jersey’s journey through the second world war. Although, these edits are not my strongest set of edits produced I still believe that they have some elements which makes them strong, but they show my exploration to this theme. If I was to further manipulate these images I would look at printing out an image of a bunker in colour, then using the acetate I would place it over the top, which creates a distortion but also presents then VS now. This would be further development to the first edit and would show Jersey’s journey through WW2. Although I have enjoyed looking at Jersey’s bunkers and there importance I feel as if I have explored them in enough detail, and if I was to do further exploration it would be to much and the images would not be ‘as good’ as the images above and the first photoshoot.
For my response, I will be going around town and taking photos that are out of the blue and unique. Most of these photos will be in the spur of the moment, so I don’t know what the outcome of these photos will be until I take them.

Final Images (Unedited):
I am really happy with how these photos turned out, but I think if I edited these photos they would look much better.
Final Images (Edited):
I edited these images on photo shop
Overall, I am really happy with how these photos turned out and I think I captured Damian’s style really well. I really like this style of editing and I think I will utilise it again.
In this photo shoot I intended to go back to the bunkers and recapture some of my successful images using my images which have been printed out on acetate, A4 paper and and 8 A3 sheets of paper to build up a massive image of the bunker. Doing this allowed me to show further exploration into the bunker idea, as I felt that this idea allowed me to come up with multiple ideas and I wanted to be able to look at different ways of capturing the bunker. The idea was to hold the acetate images up to the lense in order to create a distorted image, I will also hold the acetate next to the bunkers and in different positions around the bunkers, I will also hold the 8 A3 images up to showcase the size comparison and wanted to emphasis how isolated the bunkers have been and to show how they change overtime. Moreover, I believe conducting this photo shoot will help to showcase Jersey’s journey through the second world war. I intend to use my DSLR canon camera with manual settings, which will allow me to control my white balance, ISO, shutter speed, focus and aperture. The shutter speed I will be using should be quick as I am not wanting to have an intended blur, I will also have the ISO low so there is no noise created. However, at some points I do intended to experiment with the ISO to really emphasis the idea that the bunkers have been isolated and almost make it seem like the images where taken during the war. I will be using artificial lighting, as the bunkers are outdoors and it will allows the images to seem more naturalistic and will portray my intended effect more successfully. At the moment I am unsure what I will do when it comes to editing the images, however I believe that ideas will come to me and allow me to show experimentation with my images.

Evaluation:
To evaluate this shoot I believe that I have been able to produce some successful outcomes which showcases the bunkers as being isolated and also shows how they where used during Jersey’s Journey through the second world war. I believe the idea itself had a lot of thought and showed clear experimentation, but was harder to execute then I originally thought it would. One issue was that it was highly windy so I had to use assistance to hold up the images next to the bunkers so it did not blow away, which means that I will have to crop a lot of the images. Moreover, the acetate was not as see through as I thought it would so it only produced shadows of the bunker in the background when I held it up to the lens of the camera. Although this was an issue, it also helped to produce a strong outcome as it created abstract looking images which I believed presented the isolation of the bunkers in a new and different way. Another issue was that it was hard to hold the image and adjust the camera settings, so some of the images taken are over exposed, or the picture within the image is moving which has created a blur. Needless to say I have managed to collect some successful outcomes, which has allowed me to explore the bunkers in a new way to showcase there importance during Jersey’s second world war. In addition, I believe the good images show my ability to adjust and confidently use different camera settings to create different affects as well as showing my creativity towards a simplistic idea and subject.
Action Plan:
As an action plan I am still unsure how I want to edit the images, but I am sure when I start to manipulate the images I will be able to think creatively and produce strong outcomes from the photo shoot. I intend to level and adjust the curves, I want to experiment with the different types of blurs, use of layers and potentially using a color splash in order to showcase these images in to present how they are isolated and the bunkers importance during the second world war.
