ACTION PLAN; THE BOYLE FAMILY

For my second shoot I wanted to create an action plan in order to stay organized;

  1. Select an appropriate area to set out on a work to find good different patterns on the ground to photograph. I ended up choosing St Brelardes beach which has a wide opportunity for different textures, shadows and lines.
  2. Next select camera lens that will work well and is appropriate for creating clear images from the distance of the lens to the floor. I ended up using a 18mm-135mm lens which made sure I could focus on all texture. For example when photographing the sand, this particular lens ensured clear texture emphasis the lines and foot prints with in the sand.
  3. Finally go to the location at an appropriate time of day that will work efficiently with the types of images I want to select. In this case I went to St Brelardes just before sunset and walked around for about an hour in order to have different shadows and almost a warm textured feeling due to the suns warm rays reflecting on to the beach creating lots of shadowed in which I tried to use to my advantage

For this photoshoot I will be concentrated on capturing the similar ideas and remain influenced by the Boyle Family. In this particular instance I will be focusing on the concept of looking down at the ground and creating individual shapes to portray a different meaning and focus point.

Technical;
This image is represented in a much darker way rather than just the use of daylight, as the appearance seems much darker and gloomier compared to just a bad and dark weathered day. I think the use of filters were used to present a more texturised and provide a different feeling and emotion towards the image. The aperture used for this image is represented deep, sharp, focused lens due to the raw and precise lines and textured within the image. Due to the darkness of the image its suggest that the exposure is much lower as there is little room for excess light being presented. When considering the color balance and temperature this image to me portrays a much warmer feeling due to the darker colors being filtered in and lack of natural day light.
Visual;

When considering the presentation of the image and the layout it has a strong feeling of organization with the yellow line being perfectly parallel to the pavement this provide an idea of a symmetrical presentation. However the uneven shapes on the pavement set a less aesthetically pleasing vision due to the harsh textured cracked and antithesis of black and white cracks made throughout the tiles. This image clearly shows a high level of textures due to the shows and filters used to emphasis the key details. When looking at this image it is evident that the eye view is from above and give the representation of looking down at the ground through the camera.

Contextual;
Conceptual;

When The Boyle Family first started creating images under a name together they had a similar pattern that they followed and a particular vision they continued to contribute to when adding to the collection following the additional ideas. When producing image, the Boyle Family’s idea is not have a focused subject but aims to make art that does not exclude anything as a potential subject. Over the time this has included things like: earth, air, fire and water, animals, vegetables, minerals, insects, water creatures  etc. In this case I believe this case to be concentrating on possibly the idea of earth looking in different types of ground with the different textures portraying different feeling towards the image.

WHO WHERE THE BOYLE FAMILY?

Who is part of the Boyle Family?

The Boyle Family is a group of collaborative artists who are now based in London. The main contributes to the Boyle family were Mark Boyle and Joan Hills. Mark Boyle was born in 1934 in Glasgow working along side Joan Hills who was born in 1931 in Edinburgh, both now live in London with their two children Sebastian and Georgia Boyle. Mark and Joan met in April 1957 in Harrogate, Yorkshire. At the point in Mark Boyle’s life he originally considered himself as a poet soon to be influenced by Joan Hills painting and began experimenting which proved to have triggered the love for visual art. Mark Boyle continued to praise Joan Hill as being the biggest influence to all his work saying she was  “she was gentle, brave and immensely resourceful” in an interview.

Where Mark and Joan’s studio was at a specific point during their life was often where they lived, this created a natural feeling of family and friends when investing time into their studio. It became important to them to  include family whenever their was a big show going on they always tried to incorporate family and friends help into the creation of the show. From early on, Mark and Joan both encouraged their children, Sebastian and Georgia to go around the studio doing bits here and there leading to getting much more deeply involved later on:  going on working trips, expeditions, helping to finalize and hang exhibitions.

When first creating the image, most images went under Mark Boyle’s name, this was due to the them being much more focused on the work and being ore unconcerned with fighting the stereotypes that artists were solo and usually male- the print was labels never mattered to them. As the became wildly know  and at the same time the artistic stereotype began to broaden, they became to present their work by ‘Mark Boyle and Joan Hills’. As they grew Sebastian and Georgia continued their work and entitled there work produced by the ‘Boyle Family’ this continued till 1985. In 2005 May time, Mark Boyle passed away and the  Boyle Family continues to work and exhibit internationally, and to progress the execution of their best known work, the huge global World Series. When producing image, the Boyle Family’s idea is not have a focused subject but aims to make art that does not exclude anything as a potential subject. Over the time this has included things like: earth, air, fire and water, animals, vegetables, minerals, insects, water creatures  etc.

THE BOYLE FAMILY- FIRST RESPONSE

My Response:

Evaluation

For this photo shoot I simply just walked around the school and outside and tried to look out for things to photograph that would be appropriate.  I originally looked closely at how the Boyle Family tried to work and focused on the idea of ‘copying’ them. For my first image I found shadows being produced through a stair case creating an interesting pattern. I cropped the image to strongly focus on the pattern instead of the background, then went to adding a subtle filter and cleaned up the pattern to create a warmer feeling to the image. For the second image I photographed a pothole and added black and white feature enhancing the shadows and specific shades to give a more dramatic appearance. For the last image a well as emphasizing the yellow lines i the first image much like images produced by the Boyle Family, I wanted to add my own twist on the selection of images so filtered the last one in to three different images all consisting of vibrant different colors, highlighting the shades, shapes and outlines being produced.

INTRODUCTION- JOURNEY AND PATHWAYS

Initial Ideas:

Journey and pathways to me is extremely linked in the aspect of the idea that the pathway you take is your own journey your choosing to  take, and the aspect that different pathways take you on different journeys to different parts of your life. For this project I’m going to try focus of the concept of different lengths of paths and the outcomes that will be created form them, associating with the levels and struggles that someone might experience when on their pathway to ‘discovery’.
