Additional editing ideas and analysis

My favourite final images

This photos come about on two separate shoots, one of which focusing on sea scapes and the other focusing on more urban industrial sculptors.I decided to edit both in a tonal black and white in order to capture a more in-sync image and an overall successful composition. The light is successful and enhances the composition of the building and overall has a surrealistic undertone and still relates to my artist and also my themed shoots. This is my favourite image and will definitely be used for a final piece.

This piece is a lot more Inspired by urban landscapes and a mirroring effect enhanced by a slow light exposure seen within a city scape, it creates an abstract type of quality and overall has an interesting composition. Although there is not a surrealism aspect the tones and overall concentration on structure allows a cohesion to the rest of the chosen images.

This image was inspired by the surreal effect of joining the woods into an interesting large historical building, this is not complete with editing but still has an interesting presence and composition to the piece.

This image has a strong sense of abstract themes but the tones and editing of the original stature has a consistency of tones and compliments the environment in which it is surrounded. The editing was very much  in a similar direction using the instant alpha technique to separate the building to form its original backdrop and then place and resize in order to be in line with the background of the sea.

This image is again the more urban route, but still uses the same tonal editing technique and with the focus on buildings and an overall separated stature to the pieces,It is unusual in its varied segregation but allows interesting points of views throughout.

New editing ideas:I wanted to do additional editing on this piece as I have already changed the romanticised backdrop to be an altered reality and the change of the tonal range in order to be more conjoined to the rest of the images,it presents an interesting aspect of light and still has the presence of a stature on the right hand side.

Here I wanted to try a basic mirroring technique in order to connote a reflection onto the sea again using a past romanticism landscapes did this by flipping and editing the tones of the piece, althought this is less successful as the previous as it is not edited well enough to show a watered technique.

photoshoot 2 and 3:final editing ideas

typology inspiration:

In my last project I have previously looked upon the old more historical buildings and recording them, however I want to find more interesting and landscape inspired images in which I can also develop.I was also going to develop within how I can use the natural landscape to express the way in which colour and the impact that they have but decided against it because it ill not have a specific relation to the ned of my project.

These ideas are much more modern photographers and also fit more into my interest of landscapes within natural and buildings that are purely structural. I think within these images they would allow me to explore more of what I want to develop within my final three weeks.I think this above is a good example of exterminations of the way in which stature and individuals in and areas can e interesting.

I decided to travel around and fine many houses in a similar area that all look very individual but have the same surrounding theme of environment, furthermore for the sunset images I want to capture a strong sense of color within the same beach but different areas and then also expand this to other areas within the island. I think i could show a gradual development of when the sun sets and perhaps even develop panoramic views.

This is my first shoot I discussed previously about my plane for the project,i want to go to many areas in which I can get a strong range of distinctive boiling I want to show no colours so I need to the stutter itself to speak fro all the effectiveness of the building itself.

I have already taken many images of old figures and statues so for this shoot I focused on the aspect of old historic and impressive buildings that have a great impact altogether.

Overall evaluation:

Once again for these images I was inspired by nature being formed with industrial structures and buildings,I  wanted to also edit some additional themes of surrealism, althought these images are not edited to completion and will need some additional work. For the nature aspect I wanted to capture large and impactful structures and also the size of the nature itself and how it can compete with the man made structures.

Final shoot and editing

To create the edits for my final artist study I took photos of buildings around town which show of the urban landscapes and show the industrial side to the island. I tried to capture areas that are not always in the public eye, for example i took pictures down side roads rather than on main roads that are seen by everyone.

I also took some black and white minimal pictures of houses around the island, I made sure that the buildings  looked like they stood out in their surroundings to reflect the work of my artist reference.

My artist reference uses old images and incorporates them with new images to create collages combining two worlds. I looked through my mum’s old pictures to find the perfect images which I could edit in the same style as  Used

First shoot(out of five):Sea Shoot

I have taken a sea shoot developing on many different surfaces of water and line which I have further experimented and attached some previous images of buildings  and created an altered aspect of surrealism and tonal editing.

This is my favourite experimental piece so far,I wanted to capture the tones of the sea to be very calm and have a contrasting representation to what water should look like, furthermore the light allowed a direct centre view and also showed a diversity of tones throughout the piece.I then decided to add this building as the tonal range brings about a harmony to the piece and also the buildings angle itself shows a three dimensional angle creating an overall successful affect.

within this piece and one other I took a sample from the sea and sued this for the sky to have a same interconnecting tonal range but also a calmness to the scenario.

Within the rest of these images I again did the same technique of editing the original images to have the same tonal range inspired by my artist and also having an interesting strong juxtaposing industrial piece in the middle of the piece.

These images above are pulley romanticised sea images and originals from the shoot itself, this portrays the scene previously to how it was altered.

Experimenting For The Mock Exam

Below is one of my final images that I will be presenting for my final piece in the mock exam. In this post I look at how I could present the photograph in different ways to make it stand out more and be more creative.

Due to the size of the subject in this photograph, I want to present the photograph on a large scale to emphasise the presence and size of it. This creates a more intimidating effect because of the largeness of the subject. I have looked at keeping window-like borders between each section of photograph but decided that I will not follow through with that because I feel that it takes away the fact that it is one large photograph. I have also looked at moving around the panels in order to create a mixed  up image – I decided that this takes away from the nature of the photograph and isn’t in the direction that I want to be going. I came to the conclusion that my best option was to stick all the panels together in the correct order to create one large photograph.

Natural landscapes- 2

Location: Abandoned Places

To explore natural landscapes more i decided that i wanted to go to abandoned places that have been neglected to create more interesting subjects for my images. I decided that I would visit derelict greenhouses with overgrown plants showing the natural aspect with the broken greenhouse creating a more thought-provoking image. Although these photos aren’t completely natural, they show how the natural aspects have taken over and grow around the urban spaces.

I went through my contact sheet and selected my favourite images and displayed them above unedited. I chose these photos as they are taken from different angles showing a different point of view in each image, some showing close up detail of areas that caught my attention and some that are from far away giving more of an overview of the scenery and structural shapes.

  • This is one of my final images for this homework as it clearly show the natural aspects i wanted to present and the derelict urban aspect through the broken glass.
  • I focused in on the left side of the image so the right side was gradually more out of focus to show the marks and patterns on the glass more clearly.
  • The glass has a reflection from the blue sky so I edited it slightly so that colour was emphasised to take make the image stand out more. The glass also has marks to show the derelict aspect of the greenhouses.
  • The colour of the plants growing around the glass are also emphasised showing darker and lighter greens. I chose this image as the panes of glass that are there create a pattern as some are missing.

  • I also like this image and decided for it too be printed and framed along with the image below as I think it portrays derelict greenhouses well.
  • The wooden frames with missing glass panes give evidence of destruction and reflects what happens to structural buildings over time.
  • I like the geometrical pattern that is created and the angle of the wooden door and frames also show how the greenhouses have been left alone for a long period of time to eventually be destroyed.
  • The condition of the plastic sheets show weathering and also show how the area has been neglected.

To experiment with my images I decided to edit different shapes with the image to make the photo more intriguing and to give the photo a different aspect, although I like the images by themselves.

  • I like the geometrical shapes and lines created from the broken wooden frames, giving a different effect than if they were not derelict.
  • The shapes I have edited emphasise the geometrical lines and shapes within the image and adds a different aspect to the photo.
  • The most effective image i think is the square as its simple and not distracting too much from the original image and the detail within it as the other shapes remove whole areas from the background image, whereas the square is a thin line.
  • The shape also brings the light blue from the sky into the bottom half of the image creating contrast between the two as it contains parts of the image within the square.
  • The colours within the image as a whole are very neutral: the panes of broken glass on the left side of the photo also show the reflection from the sky making them appear blue in the image and  show the reflection of the clouds aswell.
  • This blue then contrasts with the green on the right side on the image on a different greenhouse,

I also tried to create some panoramic images by taking the same image and flipping it horizontally and attaching to the original image. I did this as i thought it would be harder to attach different images and line them up exactly to create one landscape so i use the same images flipped so the it was easy to connect which I thought would be more aesthetically pleasing. These panoramic images create structural shapes that would not be found in real life making for an interesting image. I did not chose these images to be in my final outcomes as I think the patterns created are too repetitive being the same images repeated again.

Homework 5- Altered Landscapes

Out of Beomsik Won and Mona Caron i decided to take inspiration from Mona Caron. I decided to edit pictures of nature and plants onto buildings to present the concept of urban taking over nature. I planed to physically stick the images onto a printed out building to make a collage and to also digitally edit images onto buildings in photoshop, similar to how I edited my other altered landscape photos.

The images I planned to use to edit onto buildings were not my own photographs but secondary source of art as Mona Caron physically painted murals onto buildings I wanted to keep that aspect but using different artists work of natural landscapes and plants, still keeping my own images of the buildings.

I first went out and took pictures of buildings so i could edit them in different ways.

I then chose two of these images to be my final images to edit. The pictures I wanted to lay on the buildings are from the artist Claude Monet as his paintings are often of nature and plants so the urban and nature will both be included in my image. Also Mona Caron is an artists and physically paints murals onto the side of buildings so i wanted to carry that aspect on to my images.

I cut the paintings specifically in the shape of the windows so it looks like the paintings are inside of the buildings. I think this was effective as the paintings are angles to make the image look 3D. These were the final outcomes when I photographed the images stuck on top of each other:

  • I chose to do this as i think the images link into my other blog posts with the theme of urban vs. nature. Claude Monet’s painting of lily pads represents the nature with the structural building representing urban.
  •  I physically printed out the images and collaged and stuck them together to make the images seem less manipulated.
  • To re-take the photo I used artificial lighting to highlight the photo as best i could even though the print out of the building wasn’t the best quality (to improve these images i could get them printed professionally.)
  • I think the edits look effective as it looks as though they were edited digitally when they were physically stuck on.
  • The shadows created from the building (especially in the first photo) make edit look more real as the painting is cut in a certain shape to emphasise that shadow.
  • For my final image I put a black border around the images and combined the tow in the same photo to show the variety of images.

Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist. His photos of the American West are often seen on calendars, photos and books.  Adams founded the photography group ‘Group f/64’. He was part of the romanticism movement and produced lots of striking landscape photographs in black and white, often involving a pathway of some sort and interesting weather.

This photograph was taken using natural daylight with the clouds blocking the harsh sun from the camera, resulting in dramatic contrast between the mountains and the river being brought into the photograph. It appears that a wide angle lens was used to take this photograph as this is what was typically used by the romantics to capture landscape photographs. It looks like a deep depth of field was used as the whole of the photograph is sharp and in focus. A shutter speed of 1/60 – 1/150 was possibly used for this photograph due to no motion blurs being in the photograph. A low/medium ISO appears to have been used as the photograph is not grainy and is quite dark, which will have been intended. There is lots of texture in the photograph, from the grassy bank to the flowing river. It seems to be quite a cold and isolated photograph as there are no signs of civilization around.

There is no colour in this photograph, which allows the viewer to focus on the range of tones, textures and shapes in the photograph rather than the colour. There is a wide tonal range in the photograph ranging from the dark silhouettes of the mountains to the white reflection of the river. It is quite a 3D photograph due to the trees in the foreground and the river running throughout the photograph, leading the viewers eyes from the trees in the foreground all the way to the mountains in the background. There is no rule of thirds used in this photograph, to me this is because Adams is trying to show that it is natural and nothing is set up.

Adams was a big part of the romantic movement in the late 1700’s, typically the romantics would photograph striking black and white landscapes with the idea that there is a deeper meaning than what appears behind everything. Romanticism was a rejection of the Enlightenment movement which took emotion out of writing and art, Romanticism wanted to challenge this by depicting emotions such as horror and untamed nature.

I think that in this photograph, Adams was trying to emphasise the natural beauty of the environment and to show that no editing was needed on the image, it is as it appears. He is trying to challenge the Enlightenment movement by doing this.

My Favourite Photograph

In this photograph I used natural lighting which allowed contrast between the correctly exposed cliff face and the over-exposed sky. This created a very wide tonal range in the photograph. An aperture of 18 was used which allowed the whole of the photograph to be in focus. I used a shutter speed of 1/40 with an ISO of 100 to create a photograph with the highest quality possible. There is a slightly cold undertone in the photograph due to the white balance.

There is no colour in this photograph as it is in the style of the romantics – the lack of colour helps to bring our more contrast and a wider tonal range in the photograph. The texture of the cliff face can be clearly seen which creates a more interesting photograph. There is a slight 3D effect in the photograph due t the shapes and depth within the cliff face.

I took this photograph at Devils Hole. I chose this as the location as it has a rich history and has lots of interest cliff faces surrounding it. I tried to create and edit this photograph in the style of the Romantics in the sense that it is black and white, has dramatic contrast in it and shows only nature. This photograph is similar to the work of Ansel Adams in the sense that it shows the untouched nature in a black and white photograph with lots of shapes and edges within it. My photographs do not have as much contrast and definition in them as Adams’ does but there is clear inspiration from him in my photographs.

Abstraction and Formalism Landscape Homework

Planning

Task: Take 150-250 photographs that explore Abstraction and Formalism

Camera Settings: I will be used an ISO of 200 along with a shutter speed of 1/40 to allow the image to be as high quality as possible.

Lighting: I will be using natural daylight for my photographs.

Location: La Collette

Context: I will be taking photographs with the work of photographers such as Albert Renger-Patzch in mind.

My Response

My Favourite Photograph

In this photograph I used natural daylight in order to create a good amount of contrast between the structure and the sky. I used a deep depth of field in order to ensure that all of the photograph was in focus and sharp. I used a shutter speed of 1/40 to allow the image to be sharp, with an ISO of 200 it allowed the image to be slightly dark which increases the contrast and drama in the photograph.

There is no colour in the photograph as I used black and white. I took inspiration for this from Renger-Patzch who did his work in black and white. This creates more drama and shadows within the photograph. There is a wide tonal range in the photograph and the wires and metal structure is very dark whereas the podium they sit on is highlighted with white. There is a 3D effect in this photograph due to the shadows and edges with the photograph.

This photograph is of a crane-type structure used for moving large items, down at la collette. The industrial part of the island that I took photographs of is a great example of altered landscapes because there is almost no nature left there due to the amount of business that goes on there.

Final ideas of urban landscapes and psycho-geography

For my ideas I want to cpature  three main aspects within my urban landscape and psycho-geogrohy shoot.

Firstly I want to capture the slow development of urbanism and the contrast of black and white historical photos compared to that of the society now, this will done by visiting areas in which had a strong historical significance and taking the photos it the same place and creating a comparison of works.

Secondly I also want to show the Morden aspects of lines ands stature wihtin the world and how it has slowly changed. this is inspired by Edward burtnasky, this could be done by going to the dump or even just going to area sin which shows such large industrial sites that it shows a strong connotations to the impact on the society.

lastly I want to capture  more generalising urban landscpses form around towns want to show interposing dynamic shots and be able to edit them in an array of methods. And perhaps even take more romanticised landscape shots in order to use later on during the project.

Contact sheet

Original images

I ended up capturing many images to show architectural  ideas o urban photography and then also large landscapes in which I had a wide view and so all to dit in an interesting manner. From these few images I wanted to show a diverse range from colour to atmosphere and the way in which the images were taken themselves.

My photos edited

I decided this image was very suiting in black as it enhanced the overall atmosphere of the images and also allowed an indebted tonal sense of different textures and creates an interesting rundown sense off environment in which I was in.I then added on a slow light exposure image in order to show a larger sense of freedom and abstract sense within urban photography. The mirror repetition with the light exposure creates an interesting divide and perhaps is meant to signifier the divide between the land in which we live from light Morden buildings to run down ones such as this.

Within this image it is was much more psycho-geography street based, as I was walking down the street in town I wanted to capture a normal photo of a realistic atmosphere in which many people travel through,I then further wanted to experiment within how each area of the image was so different and contrasted with a different aspect of architecture and also  a different theme as to what urban photography is. Because of this I tried to re-create the image moving the area but still in such a way the lines work together and create an interesting sense of structure and also light.

Within This image I wanted to capture a strong overall night time sense of a city,I then was inspired by my altered realities feel to the piece so wanted to flip and separate the image but in such a way you are still able to see what the landscape looks like.

Here is a similar image to the one above, I wanted to use a wide lens in order to capture the whole atmosphere of the piece,I then again additionally added on the slow shutter speed light and did this in such a way in separates the images and creates a new abstract feel overall.

This image is Alot more experimental, for the background I have a slow shutter speed image capturing the lines of red light from the light  and also the blue of the sea,I moved my camera left and right in order to have the lines segmented movement throughout, furthermore I then did the same as previous and edited on an image but this time in the place of position if was originally, this creates a random image overall but effective for experimentation.

This is the image of the decaying house, wihtin this image I wanted to exaggerate the colours and shows an over exaggerated feel of colour to the piece,I did not do any further editing due to me having already done this before.

Lastly this piece was a lot more collage based,I wanted to show how lines can be used structurally to add additional buildings and create dimensions that are not possible but do structurally work in the image,Also this is the same building in different angles and lightings which creates an interesting contrasting dynamic to the image. Also the large window to the right is from a 3rd separate image but again shows a different structure to the image.
