Secrets, Codes and Conventions – Fourth Shoot

Planning

Task – Take 150-200 photos exploring the theme of exploration under the key word ‘secrets’

Props – I will be using the city of New York and its subway’s in my photographs

Camera Settings – I will be using completely different camera settings throughout the shoot as I will be exploring different areas.

Lighting – I will be using daylight and artificial light

Location – New York

Context – I am looking at the theme of exploration for my AS level externally set assignment.

Concept – I hope to take photographs of the secrets that are within New York City whilst taking inspiration from Gregory Berg and Robbie Shone.

My Edits

Favourite Photograph

In this photograph I used the harsh lights of the subway to illuminate the photograph. These harsh lights created contrast with the rest of the dimly lit subway.  This photograph is slightly underexposed on purpose as it creates a mysterious feeling within it. I used a deep depth of field to capture this photograph in order to capture the depth and length that the subway travels. I used a shutter speed of 1/40 with an ISO of 200 in order to capture the photograph in the dimly lit environment whilst keeping the quality of the photograph as high as possible.

The colours within the photograph are quite faded and dim – this is to reflect how the subway is tucked away underground and is quite dark and can be quite intimidating with some of the characters that can be found within it.  There is quite a dark tonal range within this photograph other than the harsh lighting which adds to the mysterious vibe in the photograph. There is a 3D effect within this photograph due to the depth of the subway and the pathways within it. I placed the pillar central with the lights coming off to the side almost symmetrically in order to create a more appealing photograph. The pathways in the photograph help to lead the eye from the foreground to the background.

When composing this photograph I had the work of Gregory Berg  in my mind – I used the setting of the New York underground and captured it as if it was deserted. This showed the exploration within the underground and how it can vary from being packed with people to having no people around, whilst this is going on there is a whole other world walking around above this. This tucking away of the underground introduces lots of interesting characters in the subways which people native to large cities would not normally see, and this exploration shows secrets of the city and the underground.

Tony Hertz: shoot three

For my inspiration oft his sea and cave shoots I decide I would go to portlet as this is where many rocky surfaces are present,I wanted to focus on the form and structure to the pieces and additionally the water and strength and action water can produce.I wanted to capture both the water aspect and then the more rural textured surfaces of the rocks and coves within the sea bed wall. Once again I chose Tony hertz due to the way in which he demonstrates emotion and beauty through the action of nature and does this in order to have a creatively different outcome symbolising a different tone to the image itself. I additionally wanted to focus on his themes so using textures and tonal features and changing the editing and also the camera settings to create different overall feelings to each location within the beach itself.

 Edits:

This is my favourite image,I like how there are many different textures exposed through the rock formation and how tonally from the centre the piece it gets lighter. Additionally the angle I have taken means that you see the rounded continuing wall throughout the left side of the image.Additionally this focuses on the conventions of beauty and the beauty nature holds and how it can be seen as more than just a powerful source over humans. conceptually this image symbolises a convention for feeling abandoned and a lack of life, this is an expression of human behaviour seen through the natural development of nature.

Here I wanted to capture an angle to present how large the wall is and again a romanticism and power to the image that nature holds, it presents the massive presence that nature holds over humans and also the unpredictability of behaviour seen through the masked tonal range. The pushed back tones additional symbolises a lack of safety and a possible code of unpredictability that the nature is about to change and a fear as a reaction to the scenarios isolated feel.

Here I wanted to capture the way in which the water has movement and power and again how the low angle enables the shoot curve and illusion of a continuing shore line. This image was taken in quick shutter speed to capture the life and movement of the water much like the artists himself .

 overall analysis:

Overall I do not think I will continue to concentrate on the behaviour and power nature has over people and will revert back to human behaviours, attitudes and traits.Although like my first water shoot I could combine water and nature once again. The more rural images without water were more effective as they presented more interesting textures and showed more force and size to the image as the water was not presenting an aggressive behaviour.

collage edit of face inspired by second shoot

For this collage piece  it wad inspired by my second artsit,I took many profile shots at different angles and edited them all to be darker tonally, then I made a plan and decided upon the sizing and angles at which I wanted the images to be cut up,lastly I positioned the imagine in order to create a fragmented segmented appearance of a face.

original images:

I think this image is unique because I also cut the images in rounded lines in order to indicated an almost 3d effect, addtionally, this shows that is it also the shape of a human head and demonstrates the inspired artist pieces of the young boys 3d body.

collage:

midori harima shoot :shoot 2

This shoot again was more abstract and focuses on more surreal aspects in the way their identity is pretested. I wanted to use aspects of mirrors and also collage to show a representation of  altered reality and identity to who someone is and who makes us who we are. This is also done in order to cover their identity with a different representation of themselves and how human behavior changes and is altered depending on the circumstances in which they are surrounded.I took this shoot in a room which the lighting was easy to control, due to the environment not being of high relevance but the main concentration upon collage and editing.

I have five main ideas for this shoot, collage, covering of identity, mirroring and using a doll to indicate a person beauty and false sense of covered identity and a lack of their real behaviour.

contact sheet:

edits:

for the edits I used photoshop, with the addition or real life positioning with paper in order to indicate an effects of ripping off skin and covering of identity, addtionally I did many edits focusing upon mirroring and forming surrealism illusions within how a face is formed and how we have different sides and values to ourselves which can be viewed differently by different people. for my next experimentation within this shoot I will do a collage and from an abstract afce with the remaining images.

within these four images I repeated and flipped the images and edited the angles to create an altered reality to the positioning of her face.I originally did this by the lighting technique and blocking out light on half of her face originally.

to edit this image I originally placed a piece f paper in order to introduce the angle and size of the effect that I would wants layered the image and used a lasso tool to segment the part of the skin I want to repeated and then shaped it to the size of the paper, removing access. lastly I used the smudge tool to allow a movement of the skin coming off and a pulling effect.

within this idea I wanted to develop more on human behaviour and emotion and what we show and cover as a secret to our identity, this tracks emotions to which people feel but will not consciously present to society.

best images and image analysis:

this is my favourite image as it uses many techniques of half lighting, and a mirror in order to recreate a face in a altered angle,I then repeated the image and positioned the faces to be facing each other to portray a whole face and then tonally edited the piece itself.Overall it symbolises a question of attitude and mystery to what a person thinks and presents through their behaviour to others, there is a sense of suspension of altered personalities to which are fake and not ourselves.

Connie imboden shoot

For The shoot I decided I would go to a beach and take the images submerged within the water in order to produce the effects of finding a truth or a identity to ourselves that we don’t present to others,A complex human behavior and searching for an identity. I went to a local beach and stood over my subject and took the images creating the lighting how I wanted, I wanted to also take image in which I could edit together and form interesting dynamic scenarios as if she is escaping the water.I wanted to also possibly catch reflections of frees and how it develops and creates a from and suture to the water and creating a mystery to where she is and a story to how and why she is there.

Edits and editing:

This image is one of my best due to the movement of the water can be seen but still the main focus is on the face which is surrounded by the water itself, it presents no emotion and lack of feeling throughout the images decided to to edit it complete black and white so it still has a prelatic element. Although it is not all completely in focus it still presents my themes of human behaviour and additionally has a string relation to that of my artist.

To edit my images I wanted to lower the saturation and higher the contrast in order to exaggerate the tonal sections to the image,These edits are more successful due to the larger focus on being submerged by water and also they show my themes of mystery to why she is there and submerging her emotions and human behaviour so she has a loss of identity.Additionally there are also strong conventions of the power of nature throughout these images and the strength the water has to effect her emotional behaviour.

I once again overlapped images to form more textualised background of the sea and or to cover my subject by a wave, addtionally I also edited the images to form a distortion and present a cover of herself and repetition of her being.

Unedited images:

Within the last thee images they are a lot more bare and the figurative formation and place of the body is what shows the themes of how we behave depending on what position we are put in,or the abstract way in which our mind conventionally works.

Photoshoot- 3

For my third photoshoot I wanted to develop the idea from my 2nd photoshoot and improve it, taking conventional objects and adding more aspects into the images like backgrounds and multiple objects and layer them together. I also wanted to take inspiration from Mari Mahr and take personal objects from my life so they have conceptual reasoning into why i took the images.

Throughout this photoshoot i tried to arrange the objects in as many arrangements and compositions as possible, experimenting with the white balance and natural and artificial lighting to see which would produce the most aesthetically pleasing image. I also tried to emphasise the warm undertones of the objects so they had a more historic and aged look to them. I found the natural lighting work best for most of the images so it didn’t look so intense and harsh. I used a tripod for the photos where the angle of the image is from the side to make sure the photos were clear and detailed, but didn’t use a tripod where the photos are taken from a downwards angle. Many of the objects used in these images relate to my life an family.

Technical
  • I experimented with both artificial lighting and natural lighting and found that natural created a more authentic, personal look, compared to the artificial that made the objects look staged, manipulated and in the spotlight.
  • The natural lighting coming from the left side lights up all aspects of the photo but focuses more on the left side of the image, emphasing the folds and creases in the newspaper and creating a small shadow on the right side from underneath the piano music.
  • This allows for a range of tones to be presented. For many of my images in this photoshoot i used a tripod, but for this image i didn’t as it’s taken from an above angle, so i used fast shutter speed.
Visual
  • The newspaper, used as one of the background layers in this image, creates an interesting texture as it dates back to 1973,  showing how the condition over the past 45 years has deteriorated.
  • The colour of the newspaper links to the other images as they all contain brown and yellow undertones, emphasisng the fact that what is being photographed is old. This contrasts with the off-white colour of the piano music, which also shows signs of ageing around the corners.
  • The tones of the newspaper link into the colour of the outsides of the box containing the mirror. This makes the overall image more aesthetically pleasing as the colours and tones all complement each other and make for a more balanced image. I also reflected newspaper in the mirror so it wasn’t completely white and so it complements the newspaper background.
  • I arranged the objects in a way so that the angles each object were placed at balanced each other out, e.g. the piano sheet music angled to the left, complemented the box with the mirror angled to right, together creating horizontal lines and different layers and aspects in the photo.
Contextual
  • The mirror in this image was owned by my grandma, the piano music is something which my grandad sent me in a letter when i was younger, and the newspaper background, which is seen in most of my images from this shoot, is newspaper dated back to Feburary 16th 1973 which i found in a box where my great great grandma’s silver tea set was kept.
  • This is my favourite image from this shoot as it includes different aspects of my family that are important to me, combined together and shown in one image.
  • It also links closely into Mari Mahr’s work using deeply personal objects and resoning behind her images.
Conceptual
  • The reasoning behind this image is to show how an image containing conventional objects can have historic links and also personal ones and that there is more to an object the  what meets the eye as there’s probably a story or personal connection to it.
  • For example, in this image I used objects from past family members displayed together in one picture showing how what might just look like objects arranged in a certain way  actually have personal and autobiographical meaning with stories behind them.

For this final image I displayed all the objects i had for this photoshoot together and arranged them in a symmetrical like layout. Most of the objects in this photoshoot were old silver conventional obects (tea pot, candle holder, teaspoons etc). In some of the images i included actual photographs, adding another element and layer to the image, making it more personal.

I chose the images i thought were most effective from the photoshoot and wanted to have them interpret Mari Mahr’s style of photography more, so i edited each one into black and white. I like the way these images turned out but think i prefer them edited in colour as they give off a more personal authentic feel with the warm undertones of the images. Although the images in black and white do give more emphasis to the small details in the images, like the creases and folds in the newspaper background and the shadows created, giving the image more texture and depth. The black and white also gives the images a more historic appearance like they were taken on a black and white camera at the time these obejcts were being used.

The tea set in this picture above was owned by my great great grandma and dates to 1896 (122 years old) so is late Victorian. The maker’s mark of ‘William Hutton & sons LTD’ is a London silversmith. The style is sometimes called ‘Queen Anne Style’ and is somewhat of a misnomer as the late Victorians reproduced the neo classical style of Georgian period with the tea set. It is also described as ‘half-fluted’ due to the decoration.

I decided to use this tea set owned by my great great grandma as it’s very personal and links into the work of Mari Mahr and how her work is deeply personal and autobiographical, yet addresses universal human concerns regarding where it is that each of us come from, and where it is that we each belong. It also interprets how she constructs her photographs from artefacts of her past life and that of her family.

In the second part of this photo shoot I took my great uncles camera and photographed it using a variety of backgrounds.

I decided to incorporate my great uncles camera into this photo shoot as it shows another aspect of my family, linking to Mari Mahr’s work again. I tried out two different backgrounds for this shoot, the same newpaper from 1973 used in the first part of this photo shoot, and solid coloured paper, creating a division horizontally through the center of my work. The image below is edited in black and white and has the background of two solid coloured pieces of paper. The different colours create lighter and darker tones in the background and emphasise the camera centered in the middle of the image.

I think this is a good continuation from my second photoshoot and shows how my ideas have developed over the two. In this photoshoot i included more aspects and layers to my images, adding backgrounds and multiple objects, rather than a black background, making the images look more natural and not  staged.

Photoshoot-2

Starting point: taking inspiration from Mari Mahr i decided to interpret her work creating similar concepts. Her work is deeply personal and autobiographical so my plan was to take personal objects from my life and photograph them. This idea links into the theme of secrets and conventions:  secrets as they are objects from my life and show history and conventions as some of the objects are domestic objects used around the house. I first gathered the objects which i have displayed below which i took in a studio setup with artificial lighting. I also wanted to take inspiration from the artist Giorgio Morandi in this photoshoot, incorporating object with simple backgrounds and to experiment using artificial lighting an natural lighting,

For this first part of the photoshoot I used artificial lighting with a plain black background for most of the photos. I used this to emphasise the tones and colours of the objects i was using. In some images I used single objects and focused emphasising that one objects, and for others I used multiple objects in a image (e.g silver cutlery,  silver candle sticks, jewellery boxes, pocket watch).

I like this image from the photoshoot as the reflection on the jewellery box from the lights creates gold and brown undertones making the objects look old and antique. The black background I created draw the attention to the objects centered in the middle of the image and creates negative space around it. To improve this image I would add a more interesting back drop to create a different aspect to my image. The reason i didn’t do this in this photoshoot is because Giorgio Morandi’s paintings all have simple block colour backgrounds and waned to incorporate that element in my photography. The difference being that I used a dark colour whereas Giorgio Morandi used lighter colours, but I think the black brings more emphasis the the gold tones than a white background would.

For the second part of this photoshoot i decided to interpret Giorgio Morandi using simple black colour backgrounds with multiple objects in the foreground. Everything in the image being neutral.I wanted to develop from the first part of my photoshoot by being in more neural colours to the background, rather than solid black. I used yellow, orange and white backdrops to see the comparison. I prefer the lighter backdrop as it gives the images a more natural look and makes the images seem less manipulated. I also used natural lighting in this part of the photoshoot to compare to the artificial lighting and found I prefer the natural as it looks less intense and more like Giorgio Morandi’ paintings.

I prefer my second part of this photoshoot as it looks at a more abstract approach, using bold colours. I used to different coloured card for each image creating a division in the middle of the image like Giorgio Morandi did in his painting. For this image i decided to use a orange and yellow background as i thought it contrasted with the red vase in the center of the image in an aesthetically pleasing way. The lighting used in this image is artificial so the whole of the image is lit up, rather than a certain section where the natural light in coming from. Using artificial lighting helped me emphasise the bright colours within the image. I think i successfully recreated Giorgio Morandi’s painting style in a photograph, which is influential for its close study of unremarkable elements of daily life, imbuing them with implications of deeper significance by emphasizing their painterly beauty and simplicity. He normally displays multiple domestic objects on a table or surface, normally having a horizontal line through the middle creating a division.

Landscape Final Outcomes

Stephen Gill

Stephen Gill, born 1971 in Bristol, is a British experimental, conceptual and documentary photographer. He became interested in photography in his early childhood, thanks to his father and interest in insects and initial obsession with collecting bits of pond life to inspect under his microscope. He has had various collections exhibited in international museums including Tate and The Museum of London.

In January 2003 Gill bought a Bakelite 1960s box camera made by Coronet for 50 pence at Hackney Wick Sunday market, near where he lived. The camera had a plastic lens, and it lacked focus and exposure controls.

Over the next four years he had used the camera to photograph within the extremely varied environment of Hackney Wick, including waterways and allotments; and to make portraits of people at the Sunday market and who lived and worked in the area.

My Work

I was inspired by Gill’s combination of natural substances over urban imagery, I wanted to recreate this however could not use the same technique that he had used. Instead, I used an overlay technique where I cut out objects like leaves from one photo and placed it over another.

Like Gill, I took photos of the environment where I live. As I walked through town, I saw this mattress by a bin and decided to take a photo.

I erased the background using the rubber tool in Photoshop and placed the flower overlay where I thought fit.

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

I added an overall filter in VSCO to make the whole image feel more like one layer.

This second image I took as I liked the formalistic structure of the scaffolding and believed it would stand out as the background of the overlay.

Using this image I found online (https://www.google.je/search?tbs=sbi:AMhZZitqFUZNGbImpARapSKR0peeimG–B4QyEaWnhho-QGOOtu1L6rxbGV-HrKRfNmAYmaj2NT6YhuvSR0d3D6tOT-mdB1slFMy1w1KsKDILTtpxyp9_1-p1XPXZwFSRhy1IGLDbBY3ZK_12yZMt7Jgrb0V8ocpdu9_1J0XephjQXHi13Jo9JlF9rYioXIYSGTbswLfR_1aRRixpklcsBeJtom8zhTqoVATRfc75-DeT8M_1m_1iMyRqapqsOdcAZghwdZoVx0v8t4pq0rX2cKCzW_11Rgz2iyz2DT4m5yVu-8OSJrUYUqtxRvcxAMYp9Yo7b7iYgoKzjCl-qI&btnG=Search%20by%20image&hl=en-JE), It added a dirtier feel to the image demonstrating the importance of nature over a man made structure.

Image Analysis

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

This image shows different angles, where the scaffolding is being looked up at but the berries are hanging down. This is metaphorical for what may be to come in the future for humankind in that there will be no nature left if we destroy it all to create man made structures.

The berries stand out in a more vibrant colour in contrast to the darker background demonstrating the true importance of nature.

The image as a whole shows elements of formalism, with the lines and structure of the scaffolding and colour of the berries. Combined together, it results in an abstraction with underlying meaning.

I boarded up each of my images separately.

Krista Svalbonas Experimentation

Krista Svalbonas is a mixed-media artist based in Chicago. She holds a BFA in photography and design from Syracuse University and an interdisciplinary MFA in photography, sculpture, and design from SUNY New Paltz. Svalbonas experiments with traditional materials in unexpected ways. She is heavily influenced by her urban environment and focuses on spatial relationships and architecture when developing abstract pieces and installations.

The above project, “Migrants”, turns an analytical gaze on the architecture of her past and present while offering a personal reflection on the nature of home.

My Experimentation

To recreate her style, I took photos that I had previously taken which I believed showed interesting architecture. I cut out sections of these buildings and placed them together at different angles. Like Krista’s work, I made the background a simple colour to allow the architecture to stand out.
