Tableau Photography

What Is It?

Tableau is used to describe a painting or photograph in which characters are arranged for picturesque or dramatic effect and appear absorbed and completely unaware of the existence of the viewer. Tableau paintings were natural and true to life, and had the effect of walling off the observer from the drama taking place, transfixing the viewer like never before.

Famous Tableau Photographers – Jeff Wall

Jeff Wall was born in 1946 in Vancouver, (Canada) where he currently lives and works. He  became interested in Vancouver’s experimental art scene and taught himself photography, seeing it as the best tool for expressing his conceptual ideas. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968, and his Master of Arts degree from the same university in 1970.

During the 1990s, Wall began seeing photography as a medium to connect film and literature to art. To create such a connection, Wall first redesigned his studio, modeling it after ‘cinematic film production-miniaturized’. Next, he began shooting his photographs much like a Hollywood movie; he built and dressed large sets, gathered costumes, and hired models. The resulting photographs were a representation of the natural world. However, Wall had not simply happened upon a scene and clicked a picture. He artificially recreated the natural scene where he controlled the image. Below is a collage of some of my favourite photos from this photographer, I chose those photos because of their eye catching nature and peaceful yet disturbing atmosphere.

Identity Photography

In this post I will be exploring photography based around the idea of identity loss. I will be looking at the perspectives that we see people in, including the issues that many have to deal with.
Here are some example of this type of photography:
In response to this I wanted to have a go at trying to create images based around this theme, using images taken by me which I could manipulate into these designs. These were my outcomes:
I explored a variety of techniques such as liquify, layering and separation. This allowed me to have the effects desired as I was able to manipulate the facial features of the subject, which can be related to the theme of missing or lost identity within yourself.

Tableau photography ideas and shoot

For my tableau photography I want to focus upon 7 deadly sins and capturing some, in specific I want to capture  a whole person of the person and in which they can.

I want to show more of a portraiture close up in order to show a close use effect and persona, I do although want to show more of the color of light in order to exaggerate the whole persona and sense top the image itself.

This image was inspired by envy and show the green  and snake around her neck are all placed there in order to successfully I’ve herself a persona. Furthermore the black water shows a deep tonal range  and mysterious and dark connotations of hurt .

I chose these images because of the vibrancy  in the color which I like and also how this is accomplished but the way in which the color and vibrancy allows a sense of persona. This image is inspired by list but in a more Modern day creative  way, the peacock feather allows a sense of calling or login for someone else. The positioning and composition of her arm also shows her low sense of security without someone with herself.

although in addition I also want to show the way in which the darker image more accurately show the darker side to signings and the whole concept of 7 deadly sins.

tableau artists

Ryan Scudded :Is a tableau photographer who’s works are highly vibrant and creative but not always in the conventional means of color. Chicagoland – growing, climbing, playing 1997 – 2003 – San Francisco – reading, writing, learning 2003 – 2006 – San Diego – shooting, driving, flying 2006 – Now – Los Angeles – making, lotsa, stuff.I chose his images because ei liked the way in which he captured a specific theme and scenario in a way in which is stereotypical and not heard of.

although the following work is not inspired by the theme in which I will develop I do think it is interesting and lots of good techniques that I too could use throughout my own work ethic.

I chose this image because I liked the way in which the photographer captured a persona to the person and a sense of action with the addition of having her self portraiture and furniture that compliment the age and history of herself. It could be perceived as a juxtaposition of adventure for such an older person and how her child like persona has not diminished throughout her aging. The light on this image is quite warm and reserved in order to take away the light that shows connotations to being young and so presents a later presents in her age and also how that compliments the atmosphere  itself.

settings for my shoot:

due to me being inspired but he 7 deadly sins I want to choose settings that work well within these words and have clear connotations to the meaning of themselves.

  • Lust.
  •  Gluttony.
  •  Greed.
  •  Sloth.
  •  Wrath.
  •  Envy.
  •  Pride.

for the following I was mostly inspired by the following three, envy, lust, greed. For the setting of lust I would want to capture a sinister feel to the image, having a sense of fair tail and how people are fuled with want and not love. While also having the connotations of revenge and darker themes theirs should also be themes of stereotypical love and lust such as using sheet and other people within the shoot itself.

for envy I want to show sins of red and fire and a deep hatred of jealously within the photos, this can also be shown with money and riches that perhaps themselves they are missing. for this image it met be effective if there is one entered person surrounded by many other people who possibly envy her, this would begin a movement and a large central impact to the images themselves.snakes can also be an accessory and also perhaps water with the following accessories surrounds themselves.,also possibly eating an apple again showing the fairy tale connotations.

greed is the final word in which I am own to use, this is due to the impact that I can use many old and silver enrichment and a crown and possess an over exaggerated feel to the image itself. I also want an interesting placement and composition for these images,so I would ;possibly use a bath and many colors in order toe exaggerate the bean of persona of luxury and money.

editing techniques for my shoot:

1)enhance the color that has connotations to the word itself, red for lust, green for greed, black and white for lust.

2)Photoshop more accessories or objects that are again related to what I am trying to create in the atmosphere.

This links to lack of identity in the following,The three sins that I am recording relates to how people become these people and how their whole identity  revolves around how others treat them and so how they decided to interact to others, and if they are envious and or anything else.

Tableau Photography

What is tableau photography?

Tableau is the French phrase for 'living picture'. Before photography was a thing it was a popular past time to which people would recreate scenes from famous paintings at parties. These people would dress up and use props to make it as accurate as possible. As photography emerged artists such as Julia Margaret Cameron created fantasy scenes like Sir Launcelot and Queen Guinevere, which prompted a huge interest in the art form. However this form of photography fell out of fashion with the introduction to realism.

Some of Julia Cameron's work can be seen below:
As seen in her work, she wanted to focus on how the photos were meant to recreate paintings in an innovative and creative way not seen before.
The 7 deadly sins were a popular topic when doing tableau photography due to each one having an important connection. These were Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. I could then link this back to how these all formed their own unique identity and change the individual for the good or worse.

Laurence Demaison

Laurence Demaison is a french photographer born in 1965. She spent most her early life training to be an architect and completed formal training in 1988. after this she became interested in photography and started making self portraits. she was self taught and enjoyed how photography could free her from using words, and made it possible for her to express herself. this is the reason for her using herself as a model because she didn’t need to direct anyone to show her vision. She would conceal, modify and destroy parts of the image using interesting techniques such as smoke, water and long exposures which often created a eary atmosphere. she manipulation of images is done when the photo is taken and not in post prediction.

I want to study this photographer for my final identity shoot because of the way she conceals and changes the identity of herself in the images. we can still tell there is a person in all of her images however they have been worpped in different ways. Although most of her images are self portraits I want adapt her idea and use her style but I will take photos of other people  so I have more control over them. none of her images are edited after they are all appear as they were taken. I will try to take my photos in her original style however I will also develop it and try to create some using modern editing methods.

Laurence Demaison

Technical: the lighting is this photo is very focuses on the smoke which is closer to the lens, the background is shadowed and blurred however there is enough light for us to see the shape of a human figure. From this we are lead to think that the lighting is controlled and that this photo was taken in a studio set up. Although the detailed smoke is what our eyes first see the blurred figure pulls our focus through this and makes us inquisitive about the person.  A fast shutter speed would have been used to capture the smoke in action. This is a black and white image however it has a high contrast between the black background and bright smoke.

Visual: The textures and pattern in the smoke are exaggerated by the blurred background and although it is very simple his image is very effective. The shape of the smoke perfectly covers the face and frames the mouth.

Conceptual: instead of using a model she preferred to use herself as the model so that her artistic image could be presented exactly how she wanted it. although she enjoyed this she struggled  to confront the image of her own body. Rather than portraying her body as it was, she sought to conceal, modify, even destroy it and reconstruct it in a form more acceptable to her. The result is a series of self-portraits which expertly use the reflective and distortive qualities of her materials along with the shadowy effects of light and negative images to create “paper phantoms”, ghosts of herself that are there, yet disappear in an instant.

Her struggles with self acceptance links in with the theme of identity and is one reason why people may chose to conceal or change their true self.

Creative portraits Homework-part 2

The exploration of both Bruno Del Zou and John Stezaker led to me the idea of experimenting with visual perception, linking to the way we see ourselves.  When researching this idea I came across a series of photographs called ‘The Identity Project’ taken by the French photographers Bruno Metra and Laurence Jeanson. They created a series of portraits that deal with the concepts of identity, beauty and otherness. Experimenting with our visual perception, they apply cut outs of facial features from glossy magazines onto their subjects faces to create a new form of facial expression, like they appear to have cosmetic surgery.

http://www.123inspiration.com/plastic-surgery-with-magazines-by-metra-bruno-and-laurence-jeanson/

“Magazines, cinema, television, keep creating and imposing codes that become social references. What one must look like, how to make up, what clothes to wear, how to behave… We are fascinated by the power of media to influence people’s identities.”

The series provides a compelling visual juxtaposition between everyday humans and the images seen in advertisements, taking a hard look at our identity, as each subject in the photograph de-faces and destroys her or his own image.

To explore this I planned to do an experimentation, taking inspiration from Bruno Metra and Laurence Jeanson , incorporating images from  magazines on peoples faces. First, I would try having printed  images and attaching faces from magazines and re-taking the picture and secondly physically attaching the cut out facial features over their eyes, lips, and noses to my subjects face, like Bruno Metra and Laurence Jeanson did in their series.

In my photo shoot I used a few different heads cut out of magazines and found that the one I used in the images that I’ve decided to experiment with was the most effective out of them all. This is because the cut of was the closest to the size of the actual model head.I then chose my favourite 6 images and displayed them next to each other so i could compare them. The pictures already had an yellow/orange tint when I took them which is what i wanted but i then decided to edit them to experiment with colours.

Although i do like the images edited with colour I decided my final 3 images for this shoot be in black and white as it gives them a dramatic effect that is not achieved in colour.

To edit these images i turned them black and white and increased the contrast to make the magazine cut out stand out even more compared to the subjects face. Doing this highlights the cutout and emphasises the shadow between the face and the paper creating a mask-like effect (especially on the 3rd image) and creates a clear division between the two. I decided for my final images to be in black and white as i did not want them to look over edited and too unnatural. I think I did a good interpretation of  Bruno Metra and Laurence Jeanson photography linking to the visual juxtaposition between everyday humans and the images seen in advertisements and their exploration of identity.

Chosen Theme // Lack of Identity

I chose the theme of ‘lack of identity’ purely due to the fact of the creativity involved with this theme which i believe will be the most interesting to further look at. It also will allow me to manipulate my images on photoshop to create mesmerising illusions and serial photographs.

Photoshoot 1

For my first photoshoot I intend to focus on the deep feelings that people are experiencing in connection with losing their identity. Identity can be formed from the labels we place upon ourselves, the roles we undertake, the activities we complete and many other factors. In our judgmental and unaccepting society, people are often too embarrassed to express their identity or feel as if they cannot do so after being previously bullied for their personal traits. This process is what I personally define as ‘loss of identity’. Such loss of identity can result in increased levels of generalised anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, a loss of self-confidence, social anxiety, isolation, all of which threaten our ability to connect with other people. These unwanted feelings are the feelings which I intend to portray through my work to create an awareness of this serious issue that is dominating some peoples lives.

This idea will be achieved using photoshop to digitally manipulate my images to achieve these feelings. There will be no need for developing my pictures once printed with this idea because the edits will be effective enough to engage and attract viewers.

Photoshoot 2

This photo shoot will involve taking simple portrait photos and incorporating a sense of color within the images to contrast with the model that I will stage to appear saddened by a loss of their identity. I believe that including these vibrant and bold colors which are associated with happiness will strongly contrast and show that there are positives even when a person feels as if they are worthless. The bright colors will symbolize this sense of involvement and loving nature that is within our society. I believe that within this photo shoot I will be able to develop images that can have a positive impact on people with such things as depression which is related with a lack of identity.

Photoshoot 3

For my third photo shoot I have in mind to use mirrors. I want to have a photo shoot incorporating mirrors as they are the symbolic object of identity and obviously reflect our identity. I can use mirrors to create illusions in the way that when a person looks into a mirror I can manipulate it to reflect something different which relates to their feelings and thoughts. Another idea with the use of mirrors would be to take photos of mirrors in locations however have no people within the image to indicate a sense of worthlessness as the viewer is looking into a mirror with no reflection of a person. The background will relate to a feeling of isolation which people feel when they have lost their identity for example an open rural area.

Identity In Photography

As I explained within the photography style of self-portraiture, identity is a key, if not the main focus or theme within all portraiture photographs. Portrait photographs for commercial use are used to talk about a persons personality and life, in other words their identity. As well as portraiture photographs being used in this way within media, identity has developed to be a big and fascinating genre in photography. Photographers are developing ways in which they can portray identity through the use of digital manipulation and using programs such as photoshop to create serial images to reflect a persons identity.

The main themes relating to identity which are displayed through photography are, gender, culture, social, geographical, lack of / loss of identity.

Gender Identity

Gender identity is one’s personal experience of one’s own gender. Gender identity can correlate with assigned sex at birth, or can differ from it completely. Some people that are assigned as being a male at birth believe that they were meant to be a female or simply do not feel like a male. This is how gender identity can differ with assigned sex at birth and is what some photographers explore and present through their photography. Gender identity allows photographers to express ones identity for how they feel it to be, whether it be a female trapped inside a males body or a male that feels like he is a male.

Cultural Identity

Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person’s self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture.

Geographical Identity

Geographical identity relates to an individual or group’s sense of attachment to the country, region, city, or village in which they live. Often photographers will photograph people in locations within their region which clearly indicates where they are from for example, if it was a photo in France, the Eiffel Tower would be a good subject to use as a background as it is very relatable to France. Or the photo would include objects which further identity where the person is from.

Lack Of Identity

Lack of identity relates to a person that feels like they’ve lost their personality and belonging in a community. It can relate to how a person is feeling and the fact they don’t feel wanted or cared about in anyones opinion. It has a strong link to depression in the sense they don’t feel like they are themselves anymore and therefore suffer saddening consequences.

Self-Portrait Photography

A self-portrait is a representation of an artist that is drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by that artist. Although self-portraits have been made since the earliest times, it is not until the mid-15th century that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture. Portrait of ‘man in a turban’ by Jan Van Eyck of 1433 may well be the earliest known panel self-portrait. Nowadays we take self portraits almost everyday through our phones and computers, therefore self-portraits have adapted to become even more interesting than those just displaying a true representation of a person. Self portraits have now become a creative way to express yourself through the use of digital manipulation. People are really exploring the ways in which they can adjust their self portraits to create surreal photos which portray a sense of their emotions or personality rather than simply a photo/painting of themselves.
