Robert frank analysis

The type and style of genre of his work: this is  photojournalism and street photography in order to demonstrate and develop how Americas is presented throughout time and his own view that is conceptualized by race and other cultures within america that created a large impact within the time. He is highly evolutionary and has loaded meaning and metaphorical advances within the piece itself.

technical:

Throughout this image there is an array of tonal and developed lighting within tone.He is highly creative within the composition using many reinfections to mimic and mirror the effects of images and personality within the pieces. you can see that this piece was taken with a fast shutter speed due tot ht movement of the bus and also a low iso to create all the detail and realism within the piece itself. There is also a large depth of field within  the sharp focused image, this is possibly in order to produce an accurate representation of the time and as a metaphoric device to be able to see the whole image itself. He has also successfully captured and interesting composition of rule of thirds within this image as you can see clear lines and levels within the bus itself, this almost accentuates the man leaning out and the detail and main couscous on him and possibly the emotions he is going through.

contextual:

This image again has a significant historical factor,of that of racial segregation and the development of how black people were detained for their own rights they were seen as lesser. The positioning of the black man towards the back also emphasized how he has less authority then the white man positioned throughout the front. The man looks also most desperate and the direct address to the camera almost demonstrates his need for help and his non understanding for why this is an occurrence of race and lack of opportunities. The is lso a very industrial inspired image, perhaps this has strong connotations to the neighborhood and the time period they are in and how this portrays poverty  but perhaps only within the black areas of town,This also shows how the deteriation of the bus shows that again the movement going backwards is a continuation of fewer rights. The young also are a metaphor for how they could be raised differently to ignore race and not be ignorant like the former generation and that this exposure does not have to be a negative experience for the young.

visual:

you can see a continuous pattern throughout the visual effects of lines and reflection and again how this is attached to that of the segregation of race and perhaps it shows a balance within the tones and also the display of the overall composition of the pieces itself Again this demonstrates how it follows the zone system and also how the light follows a specialty and how it is also a reflection of the piece itself. There is  also a sense of naturalism and nature of how it was a coincidental image again suggesting his more journalistic theme and how if it accourance in front of him it is an accurate representation of america and the people within it.

conceptual:

once again this shows the divide between race and the significance that this ouccre within america. The whiter people abuse there privilege within this image almost turning their heads up as if better than the photographer  and due to their positioning in the front of the bus, again portraying the social significance and demand of authority. It shows that this is not the american dream, there is rebellion and suffrage and in a state of change and confusion within america, and this is his way of capturing the image and he is documenting this as he is face to face and to portray that america is not an idealistic journey in a juxtaposition in how it is represented,This image also portrays how society treat each other.

from a more modern perspective we would what to expect these standards of living to be completely different, but it is not. There is still a accurate continuation of suffering and also a demand of violence and it still has a harsh light of day that is still captured within photographers works today.

Abstract- Homework 3

Abstract photography concentrates on shape, form, colour, pattern and texture. The viewer is often unable to see the whole object. The subject of the photo is often only a small part of the idea of the image. Viewers may only know the essence of the image subject or understand it by what is implied. However, it could be argued that all art, including photography, is essentially abstract. I first set out to look for straight bold lines and found that the bright yellow works well.

I edited these photos in photoshop by adjusting the hue and increasing the contrast to create different coloured lines to achieve more interesting, abstract photographs. I also experiemented with different layouts, creating patterns and geometrical shapes by flipping the photos vertically and horizontally.

I tried to explore the contrast of colour between the yellow and black and the texture they presented. Using natural light and photographed different angles of the wall to create variety within the collection. To improve this photo shoot I would edit the photos to make them more abstract so the viewer would not be able to see that it was a wall and would emphasise the pattern and texture.

I edited these photos in photoshop to develop them further by turning them black and white and making the lines more bold. I like how the black and white emphasises the texture within the wall and the weathering that has occurred over time. I think it is now less clearer to the viewer that the photograph is of a wall and is now more abstract.

I think the photos I have taken are similar to this photo (Torn Poster II—Redbird) Ernst Haas photographed in 1960.  Both photos contain bold, straight lines and texture within that. The black lines frame the picture and are the points where the eyes are drawn to. Similarly, both contain horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines.

Abstract and colour photography

Abstract photography

Sometimes called conceptual or concrete photography, it is meant by depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.

Exploring Colour

I used colour to create abstract shapes. I adapted and edited the images to make the colours bolder because I thought they look dull and could be adapted more and could be made more interesting and visually pleasing. These are my original edits and then the more interesting edits.

I used Photoshop to create these edits. Firstly, I cut out the circular shape using the ‘elliptical marquee tool’ where I then cut out a circle from one of my chosen images. Once I had cut out a circle I pasted it onto a new document where I made a collage of four. I wasn’t happy with the final outcome so I decided to change the vibrancy of the image to it being very high and then used the paint bucket tool to fill the coloured areas in with a bolder colour. I made a collage of nine in a new document as I wanted to show of more of my edits.

Homework 3 ( Ernst Haas )

Ernst Haas

Ernst Haas was a photojournalist and a pioneering color photographer. During his 40-year career, the Austrian-born artist bridged the gap between photojournalism and the use of photography as a medium for expression and creativity. Ernst has a great vision in exploring photography in a more creative and unrealistic way than we actually see things in real life. Using various camera setting like shutter speed Ernst captures great visuals of urban environments, capturing the explosive and rushed vibes within these areas. He does this by producing many images containing motion blurs.

Haas was an early innovator in color photography. His images were widely spread by magazines like Life and Vogue and, in 1962, were the subject of the first single-artist exhibition of color photography at New York’s Modern museum of art. His book The Creation (1971) was one of the most successful photography books ever, selling 350,000 copies.

My Photo shoot Plan

In my photo shoot I intend to use a slow shutter speed in order to capture abstract images which are serial, like Ernst’s are. It appears that he uses mainly natural lighting for his photographs therefore as will I and the location of my shoot will be in a woodland area, where I can capture the feeling within and among the trees. This is similar to Ernst’s photography where he captures the atmosphere in the city, amongst buildings however I am going to take a different approach by expressing the feelings found within a woodland area.

Focus and Focus points

How do we focus?

In order to demonstrator a sharpness to an image, and allow and intention to focus and not. The works also together in order to change the distance of lenses, from the sensor and or the filming order to control the way in which light is captured. This is also done by how the light coverage’s precisely a point within the plane of the film or a  DSLR sensor, this means the image will become more in focus .

when looking through a viewfinder of any DSLR camera and you will see several dots, or squares, that represent individual points at which the camera is capable of focusing. This is in order to clearly view the focusing points ,even if this might seem obvious.  but not all of them are created equal. When you press the shutter button  halfway, some of these points will light up, indicating that everything at that specific spot is crystal clear and your photo will be nice and sharp.

this is an example of cross focus points to hep with ensuring the positioning of the camera.

However, the speed at which your camera can focus on one of the points, as well as how accurate the focus will be, depends greatly on whether the individual focusing point is a single or cross-type. Understanding the differences in how they operate can help you decide which ones to use to take better photos. This is a further example :

there are also many ranges within focus points, this can develop  of change the point within your camera with a button, and will be brought up upon the screen, showing the range of points.

below you can see my development of capturing the same focus point within a dogs face too.

colour overlay and blur Photoshop

Within this piece I wanted to cut out two identical pieces and use this in order to develop an overlay and deepening of color over the highlights and cut out on the wall itself. I used red to contrast to the lighter blue tones of the underlay of the original image. I duplicated these layers and images so again the red is more significant and you can see this development throughout these images.

Blur Photoshop
I edited  this image within layering and adding a blur layers then went back into this piece. Within the first layer I used a rubber and the brackets to differentiate how big and small I want the rubber to be,again creates a depth of field of how I want the front to be. I focused on detail and have successful aspects of realism and only the back to so blurred which creates contrast. Then further edited this image in order to show better color such as darker tones to again exaggerate the image itself and not be distracted by off coloring’s creating a Batter finished effect.

Here you can see my method of developing the color overlay, finally you duplicate the layer and attach the specific shape and placing that you feel would be the most effective,The throughout the half circle you can develop the colors and development of the square and further the potion and add additional shapes to deb then the color.

And to achieve the blur photo I Opened Photoshop then Duplicated the Layer added Mask Layer –,after this I added an additional Filter going to Blur then  Motion Blur –and finally Then selected how blurred I wanted the image to be ,then to take away and add more reinvent I  Selected the Eraser tool and followed to  Erase the section that I don’t to be in focus ,producing the final image.

Typologies- Homework 2

Photoshoot 1

I used old video tapes to photograph as a typology because they all look similar but are slightly different. They all have different labels with different colours, and some have a greater antiquity then others. I placed a white piece of paper behind when taking my photographs as I wanted to emphasise the video tapes without any other distractions. I also like how the white paper showed the shadow from the light coming in on the right, giving the photo some depth and 3D qualities.

Photoshoot 2

When photographing the different types of leaves I tried to make the backgrounds different for each individual photograph, making whole contact sheet more interesting and varied. I also tried to find a leaves with a range of different colours and different patterns and textures. I used natural light and had shadows in some photos creating a more natural effect.

I selected the photos I thought worked better together and created a contact sheet displaying them. I made sure the order in which they are displayed, and the colours in which they have, complemented the other photos, making the overall contact sheet aesthetically pleasing.

Photoshoot 3

For this shoot tried to gather photos that are similar to Hilla and Bernd Becher and their structural photography. These photos are took in London and all show similar and different structural qualities. I chose to edit my photos to black and white, trying to recreate Hilla and Bernd Becher’s style. One improvement for this shoot would be for the buildings to be all the same size as some are closer up and some are at a further distance, so the overall effect of the contact sheet is not as strong and my other ones.

Overall i think i produced photos taking inspiration from Hilla and Bernd Becher well and tried to explore different sides to typology photography and took into consideration how they sized the object the same in every picture.

Depth of field

what is depth of field?

Is the focus or range effectiveness within the range,it is also the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image. This portrays the graudal changing as to how much os a specific image you want to be in focus and to what extent you want for a certain area, Traditional debth of field was created in order to suggest that disatnt objects often need to be larger on the film and do not need to be so sharp, the loss of detail in distance is particullarly noticebale with extreme engalrgments so for example this allowed a blur but in order to enchnace a speific direct area of vibrancy within tht eimage that you want to be easuily seen and accessible. Debth of field is important for images within marcro and is a look that can be highly sucessful within the right settings.

within this image you can see the gradual focus point change in order to allow more depth of field and more detail. Whereas the first narrow depth off field shows the widening  of the lens  to create a smaller(narrow) so more detailed image and so less focus  on the suorounding subjects such as in this image:

within he first image you can see it is clearly focused pm the floor in front and the second it is also forcing on the flower behind as well and the red flower itself.

you are also able to focus on different areas still blurring whatever section you want ,or in a shot you are also able to focus on everything in the frame with a large depth of field.

most artists would recommend focusing very close to infinity, and stopping down to make the bollard sharp enough. With this approach, foreground objects cannot always be made perfectly sharp, but the loss of sharpness in near objects may be acceptable if recognizably of distant objects is paramount.
