Final Presentation Ideas

When presenting my imagery I wanted to experiment ways of which I could visually present my images differently to the standard style. A way in which I could do this was through Photoshop where I could manipulate images into the style of presentation I desired. Before I got to this stage however I thought it was necessary to come up with a mood board on my ideas regarding the presentation of the final pieces, this was my result:After looking over these images I decided I should trial run a few of them by manipulating the photos within Photoshop to get the effect needed. I Ideas I settled on were 3D presentation of the landscape and objects due to how through this method it allowed me to choose the focus of interest I wished the view to focus on, whilst creating a more realistic and abstract result. The second idea was the simple image between two black sheet with a white border, I chose this one because I loved the simplicity of the outcome as I thought it emphasized and complimented the entire piece.

I firstly focused on the 3D design with this being my desired effect:To create this I stitched images of building I had taken together, with me adding edges digitally it made the 3D effect I wanted, this was my outcome:

Whilst making this design I found that by adding a shadow to the piece created the effect as if it was mounted upon a wall, emphasizing the 3D aspects even more.

Once completed I moved onto the design of a plain black mounted image to present my images in. To do this I used simple shapes to create the imagery adding texture to them by using overlay, this was my result:

Contextual/Conceptual Study

Joan Fontcuberta – Artist Research

Joan Fontcuberta, who was born in 1955. He is also a teacher, editor, curator and writer. He received a communication’s degree from Autonomous University of Barcelona in 1977. In his early years of career, he worked in the field of advertising just like his family. Between 1979 and 1986, he taught at the University of Barcelona in the Fine Arts department.

An exhibition by Joan Fontcuberta, titled Through the Looking Glass in association with Digital Nights, involved internet resources (Reflectograms and Googlegrams). These pieces of works aim to reflect the significance of the rise in use of images, the potential of viral distribution and broadcast, as well as artists’ proliferation.

Landscapes Without Memory

The series is deceptive; these aren’t photographs but computer-generated images created by software renderers that are designed to produce 3D images based on cartographic data. Fontcuberta decided to explore the possibilities of the technology by feeding it misinformation: instead of giving it a map to read, he fed it the visual data contained in famous paintings or pictures of different parts of his anatomy. The results are these “landscapes without memory.

Altered Landscapes

What Is It?

The Altered Landscape Photography Collection is the largest focus collection of the Nevada Museum of Art permanent collection. Since its establishment in the early 1990s, the collection has included images that address and engage issues related to land use and the changing landscape.

Much inspiration for this theme  was deprived from a group known as the New Topographic photographers; they made works that framed industrial structures, suburban developments, and other ordinary subjects with unprecedented matter-of-fact realism.

Now, the term ‘Altered Landscapes’ refers to a variety of different subjects and approaches, these range from surreal images where Photoshop and editing plays a large part to purposely visibly cut and pasted imagery. Due to this, altered landscapes is a very open theme to work with.

camera skills within landscape work

due to me wanting to capture an array of landscapes from sunny romanticised landscapes to more abstract light exposure night time shits I need to know how aperture works and the concentrating of depth of field in order to focus in on a specific subject matter. I will experiment with this and use it creatively and such. The F number is an optical system of the cameras lens, due to it not having any dimensions

The f-number of an optical system such as a camera lens is the ratio of the system’s focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. It is a dimensionless number that is a quantitative measure of lens speed, this is important as it allows you to choose what concept of how much an an image you want to capture and for what effect.

throughout all my shoots I intent to change the  focal length, aperature and also the fouls distance in order to use it as a creative aspect and enhance my image without editing them.

exposure bracketing:

I used exposure bracketing when concentrating on a. romanticised and more natural landscape, this is because depending on weather you are under or over exposed it captures different segments and different details within a pieces overplayed many of my image own order to be able to have different concentrations of detail in different areas such as the example below:

I also want one experiment within experimenting of editing sills such as using HDR Images, and making sure that I am capturing high dynamic details and capturing every element of an image. this is mainly important s prep from my romanticised images as they would be capturing light in a strong manner and also the reflections upon my images. I could do this by putting my camera into its hdr setting and allowing it to capture a high saturated landscapes.

These are my examples of using HDR and then further editing in order to emphasis the colour and how light comes through within all of the images.

within this first image i wanted to capture a sea scape but then found that the clouds had such a beautiful movement and shape through which the sun comes through with such strong highlights that bounce off the sea,  I included this within the images as I think this would also be a successful base off an image as the water has a solid movement but interesting point of texture.

This second image has many differences, this is due to the way in which again the light is reflecting off the sea and the warm tones caused by the light but due to the over saturation has lost a presence of some of the detail.

technically both images have many features that make them successful although conceptually the first image has a more successful HDR theme parented and also presents the use in which I balanced the focal length to allow a wide image and also an equal exposure bracketing too mature the details within every aspect of the image.

Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams (1902 – 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist. His photos of the American West are often seen on calendars, photos and books.  Adams founded the photography group ‘Group f/64’. He was part of the romanticism movement and produced lots of striking landscape photographs in black and white, often involving a pathway of some sort and interesting weather.

This photograph was taken using natural daylight with the clouds blocking the harsh sun from the camera, resulting in dramatic contrast between the mountains and the river being brought into the photograph. It appears that a wide angle lens was used to take this photograph as this is what was typically used by the romantics to capture landscape photographs. It looks like a deep depth of field was used as the whole of the photograph is sharp and in focus. A shutter speed of 1/60 – 1/150 was possibly used for this photograph due to no motion blurs being in the photograph. A low/medium ISO appears to have been used as the photograph is not grainy and is quite dark, which will have been intended. There is lots of texture in the photograph, from the grassy bank to the flowing river. It seems to be quite a cold and isolated photograph as there are no signs of civilization around.

There is no colour in this photograph, which allows the viewer to focus on the range of tones, textures and shapes in the photograph rather than the colour. There is a wide tonal range in the photograph ranging from the dark silhouettes of the mountains to the white reflection of the river. It is quite a 3D photograph due to the trees in the foreground and the river running throughout the photograph, leading the viewers eyes from the trees in the foreground all the way to the mountains in the background. There is no rule of thirds used in this photograph, to me this is because Adams is trying to show that it is natural and nothing is set up.

Adams was a big part of the romantic movement in the late 1700’s, typically the romantics would photograph striking black and white landscapes with the idea that there is a deeper meaning than what appears behind everything. Romanticism was a rejection of the Enlightenment movement which took emotion out of writing and art, Romanticism wanted to challenge this by depicting emotions such as horror and untamed nature.

I think that in this photograph, Adams was trying to emphasise the natural beauty of the environment and to show that no editing was needed on the image, it is as it appears. He is trying to challenge the Enlightenment movement by doing this.

My Photographs

Top 5/Edits
My Favourite Photograph

In this photograph I used natural lighting which allowed contrast between the correctly exposed cliff face and the over-exposed sky. This created a very wide tonal range in the photograph. An aperture of 18 was used which allowed the whole of the photograph to be in focus. I used a shutter speed of 1/40 with an ISO of 100 to create a photograph with the highest quality possible. There is a slightly cold undertone in the photograph due to the white balance.

There is no colour in this photograph as it is in the style of the romantics – the lack of colour helps to bring our more contrast and a wider tonal range in the photograph. The texture of the cliff face can be clearly seen which creates a more interesting photograph. There is a slight 3D effect in the photograph due t the shapes and depth within the cliff face.

I took this photograph at Devils Hole. I chose this as the location as it has a rich history and has lots of interest cliff faces surrounding it. I tried to create and edit this photograph in the style of the Romantics in the sense that it is black and white, has dramatic contrast in it and shows only nature. This photograph is similar to the work of Ansel Adams in the sense that it shows the untouched nature in a black and white photograph with lots of shapes and edges within it. My photographs do not have as much contrast and definition in them as Adams’ does but there is clear inspiration from him in my photographs.

Joan Fontcuberta and James Casebere

Due to his aim of wanting to portray a truthfulness within his work and examine conceptual aspects of art his approach to art is unique. His propaganda and dictatorship of Spain allowed him to reflect his authority wihtin his are,his advertising had complete relationships between photography and truth but most importantly he believed that his humour is the most important concept throughout his work and called his art ‘postmorden’

How does Fontcuberta’s work compare to the work of James Casabere ?

Since the mid-1970s James Casebere (b. 1953, Lansing, Michigan) has been carefully constructing architectural models and photographing them, yielding images somewhere between realism and obvious fabrication. All of Casebere’s work is filled with highly detailed models of but in a juxtaposing nano-detailed space.he does this in order to create his’ constructed  photography’. He focused much of his work on minimalism and the emptiness of spaces to that of the expansion of prison cells to flooded rooms. He likes to promote hunting images that do not underestimate the use of light and shadow to form a sense of size. Casebere is interested in the memories and feelings that are brought to mind by the architectural spaces he represents. The resulting works are dramatic, surreal, and remarkably true to life, embracing qualities of photography, architecture, and sculpture.

This differs strongly to that of Joan Fontcuberta’s work and how he focuses on the interesting work in which we are surrounded to portrays aspects of surrealism and adventure within his images. the juxtaposition wihtin their photos are enormous yet both highly influential.

To me Fontcuberta’s work inspires such a depth of beauty and detail of action within his images,everything has a meaning and belonging while still being filled with many visuals. He also has many portrays of people within his work to show how a human ideal to the scenario.I chose this image due to the way in which nature is seen surrounding a basic human necessity, it proposes the state in which he himself lives and how he is tangles and almost retrained to the life of nature and a drawn very humanness aspect of not wanting to leave the bed. It is a minimalist idea but presenting in a more diverse way whereas;

James Casabere’s work prestos a beauty within. basic man made future as he uses the delicacy of light to from and enhance the stutter to become a life and shows a sense of nature though the confinements of human life.

Within my work I too want to show different contrasting elements of more simple and structurally dynamic images enhanced within light but I also ant more interesting and conceptually interesting images.I think both images are just as successful as each other and encompass what they both want to portray every efficiently.I chose to all experiment within His work due to the way in which he is able to show how he captures the landscapes an nature shots which will be the boom of my development shots. Although I think he most effect part of this research is how James Casebere uses light to show tones and stutter within his work which is too what I need to experiment within. He does also have themes of surrealism which will also help me within my project.

Mood-board of relevant images to project idea,And Action plan for shoot

Mood-board and brainstorm

As explained previously I want to expand upon using nature landscapes, urban and historical buildings and putting them into these situation weather it be the sea or the woods, this does create a surreal aspect to the images but overall creates an effective development of original ideas.I chose all the images because they all have a similar theme of moulding architecture  and some urban images to forms of nature, although I will further experiment as this is just inspiration and a theme in which I will too follow. I will edited all my image in a  similar method such as above, and editing the tonal enhancements and creating a black and white effect.

Action plan for final shoot

For the shoot itself  will need to visit around  varies separate locations, althought this will be split into four sections

1)the first of which will be trying to capture a variety of typologies of buildings itself, I want to show urban buildings, strong historical shapes and army grounds,I also want to show large buildings that hold lots of power within my chosen theme,This will also develop the formalism within buildings and capture the shapes and importance of tones also seen within the architecture.

2)The second shoot will be focused  on capturing natural landscapes such as Rocky grounds, woods and as seen above large tree trunks will also take images that are purely for the woodland landscape and  have a power, and  possibly a strong romanticised theme within them.I also want to capture landscapes in which I can edit a more surrealistic images to edit them such as the image above with the door in the rock itself.

3)The Third shoot will be a much more beach and water inspired shoot, this is to show the simplicity of the artists above and how I can show illusions and repetition of shapes and lines and formalism within the piece creating a specific mood

4)finally this shoot is a lot more abstract, it is a lot more based upon capturing light and city scapes with slow exposure shots,I chose to do this incase I can edit them into the image and create a more interesting intriguing landscape image.I have previously experimented within this in my urban shoot and think it was successful so will further look through these images.

After experimenting within all of this I will further edit all the images together this will be around two or three images formed and photoshopped together and then further enhancing the tones. I think I will have to do a lot of extermination within this but overall will develop successfully.

Artist case-Noemie Goudal +image analysis

Noemie Goudal

Her work that I am interested within is all about “observatories” this is a series of black and white images in order to demonstrate harsh strong structures such as concrete juxtaposed within the opposition of their natural equal,so in this case a calm sea.She creates this within using a two dimensional backdrops constructed entirely from paper by herself. This is interesting because it is forming a creates photography element in order to create a mass 3D feel. she consistently uses nature in order to show a more urban area and create an atmosphere that is not accurate to her surrounding when taken.

Noémie Goudal  has always has been drawn to nature and how she can use a combination of culture and combine them, she describes her methods as “invaded” by the man-made. Her strong attraction additionally to drama so also likes to combine all her learning into one. She has two stages throughout her work being her underline absurdity and the contrasting nature being relegated to a supporting feature. She has consistency said to have a deep  attraction for all but the most hardened urbanite. And yet water has had to give way to plastic, a word which has become synonymous with ’cheap’ and ’false’,although her work shows a beauty of nature and also illusion aspects. This is the conceptual concepts behind a strong majority of he photos.

I chose her as an artist due to her clear ideas of the formal elements trying to enhance the beauty of a strutrue that is man made, although also as a metaphor to demonstrate the obscurity of what humans do to land.

Image analysis

I chose this image due to the industrial impact that the center structure has,and also the impact that the reflection has and the power that it holds over the slow clam sea. There is a clear division and symmetry of three aspects within this image, this it the division of the building, the water and the sky, this allows a segmented and well thought out overall composition of the piece. I will have to do a lot of experimentation  in order to know how to successfully mirror a reflection within the water of the image as the object itself will obviously not be there. I think the tonal depth of colours all work very well together due to the way in which the centre is the main depth and then it gets light and then darker tones to the outside against signifying  a strong cut of shape. I like how the structure is such a solid model and how the cut tones and forms allow a strong contrast within the surrounding nature. the sky also has a hint of romanticism but is very reserved due the removal of colour and form to the clouds themselves. Her narrative is so transhistorical and transcultural she uses such simplistic images in order to prints all of her ideas of how she sees society building all these aggressive large buildings and this is taking away from nature,It is meant to symbolise life itself

My inspiration

I do think that all her methods from tones to the way in which she contrast her buildings to nature is all successful and the way in  which she too wants to show,I also think that the way in which she hangs her images and finally presents them is also successful and highly unique I too will put a lot of thought into presenting my overall last images because it is definitely one of the most important finishing features and I will experiment within this more after I have produced my images.

The New Topographic Inspired Shoot

within this shoot on the topic of New Topographics, I will be focusing on the contrast between the urban landscape surrounded by forms of nature allowing imagery to give way to unromanticized views of stark industrial and urban areas to which these everyday scenes would not be given a second glance about.  Photographers that have inspired this shoot for me consist of Robert Adams, Stephen Shore and Henry Wessel.

Some of their works can be seen below to provide a general idea to the overview of New Topographics:

I decided however to plan the shoot before I went ahead and did it. This would allow me to have a general idea before hand of what I wanted, and needed to achieve to produce an effective overall image regarding the topic of New Topographics. These are my ideas:

Once this was complete I decided it was time to move on to the shoot itself, and so decided to use the areas regarding the idea sheet of town, Grouville and St Brelades. These were my outcomes:

Once the shoot was complete I narrowed the images down to only ten of my favourite pictures. By doing so it would make it easier for me to select the final image that I believe to be the most relevent and successful overall. These were my choices on the ten best images:

From this selection I whittled the ten images down into five, this would allow to select the best photo from the batch which I deemed most appropriate for the catagory ‘New Topographic’. These were my choices:

I chose this image because of how I loved the clear contrast between nature and the taking over of it by man, seen by the run down sign surrounded by overgrown grass. I found this to be aesthetically pleasing created by the use of a depth of field, by doing so it blurs our the foreground and the background allowing only really the sign to be noticed properly which is where the eye is drawn. I found the slanted composition to be especially interesting by how it gives the impression of an overgrown and ruined world.

I selected this image due to once again the use of the depth of field that blurs the backdrop, this along with the use of the composition allowed for maximum effect, giving the impression of a world that eventually succumbs to nature. I found that the way that the fence was composition allowed for a sense of distance to the photo, with the use of neutral space on the right being filled with industrial buildings bringing the viewer into perspective of the area it was taken in.What I loved about this image was the clear contrast and clear colors used to create an aesthetically pleasing outcome. This is done through contrasting colours blue and white which highlight features of the building, allow for such things as the door and bolts top pop out and draw the viewer’s attention. The composition I found also was aesthetically pleasing due to how the entire image is symmetrical which in consequence created a much cleaner and pleasing look.Within this image I found that there was obvious difference between nature and man-made structures. This is once again done through the use of a depth of field to which allows for the appearance of us peering through nature to find the man-made structures that surround everything, whilst showing how where ever nature is human activity is not far behind. I found that the gloomy colours within the image emphasised the destruction caused to the landscape by these structures and how nature and civilisation lives side by side. Finally I chose this image as I loved the reflection of cranes created by the aftermath of rain fall. This was partially down to how I thought it highlighted a clear contrast between nature and society, with the looming structures left behind, whilst at the same time creating a deserted and desolate feel to the overall piece. I found that the composition of the piece complimented the photo as it filled most of the negative space made by bricks, with various beams fading out of the image.

Once completed I thought it was time to decide on a final image from the shoot that I thought emphasised the topic ‘New Topographic’ and was most effective in response to it. This was favourite image as an outcome to the shoot:

What made me choose this photo as my final image was because how to me it summed up the clear contrast between human activity and nature. This was done by the composition of the grass creating the impression of it growing around the sign as if taking back the land seized by man, to which there is a clear difference in surrounding of the backdrop consisting of machinery and metallic structures that create contrast in not only surroundings but color. The use of depth of field creates a clear definition around the sign allowing for the eye to be drawn to it immediately with both the foreground and background complimenting it due to the drastic difference in colors and blur. To me this was the image that related the most to the topic of ‘New topographic’, which not only created a feel of the contrast between man and nature, but also of the deserted spaces that surround us in our everyday lives.
