Robert frank analysis

The type and style of genre of his work: this is  photojournalism and street photography in order to demonstrate and develop how Americas is presented throughout time and his own view that is conceptualized by race and other cultures within america that created a large impact within the time. He is highly evolutionary and has loaded meaning and metaphorical advances within the piece itself.

technical:

Throughout this image there is an array of tonal and developed lighting within tone.He is highly creative within the composition using many reinfections to mimic and mirror the effects of images and personality within the pieces. you can see that this piece was taken with a fast shutter speed due tot ht movement of the bus and also a low iso to create all the detail and realism within the piece itself. There is also a large depth of field within  the sharp focused image, this is possibly in order to produce an accurate representation of the time and as a metaphoric device to be able to see the whole image itself. He has also successfully captured and interesting composition of rule of thirds within this image as you can see clear lines and levels within the bus itself, this almost accentuates the man leaning out and the detail and main couscous on him and possibly the emotions he is going through.

contextual:

This image again has a significant historical factor,of that of racial segregation and the development of how black people were detained for their own rights they were seen as lesser. The positioning of the black man towards the back also emphasized how he has less authority then the white man positioned throughout the front. The man looks also most desperate and the direct address to the camera almost demonstrates his need for help and his non understanding for why this is an occurrence of race and lack of opportunities. The is lso a very industrial inspired image, perhaps this has strong connotations to the neighborhood and the time period they are in and how this portrays poverty  but perhaps only within the black areas of town,This also shows how the deteriation of the bus shows that again the movement going backwards is a continuation of fewer rights. The young also are a metaphor for how they could be raised differently to ignore race and not be ignorant like the former generation and that this exposure does not have to be a negative experience for the young.

visual:

you can see a continuous pattern throughout the visual effects of lines and reflection and again how this is attached to that of the segregation of race and perhaps it shows a balance within the tones and also the display of the overall composition of the pieces itself Again this demonstrates how it follows the zone system and also how the light follows a specialty and how it is also a reflection of the piece itself. There is  also a sense of naturalism and nature of how it was a coincidental image again suggesting his more journalistic theme and how if it accourance in front of him it is an accurate representation of america and the people within it.

conceptual:

once again this shows the divide between race and the significance that this ouccre within america. The whiter people abuse there privilege within this image almost turning their heads up as if better than the photographer  and due to their positioning in the front of the bus, again portraying the social significance and demand of authority. It shows that this is not the american dream, there is rebellion and suffrage and in a state of change and confusion within america, and this is his way of capturing the image and he is documenting this as he is face to face and to portray that america is not an idealistic journey in a juxtaposition in how it is represented,This image also portrays how society treat each other.

from a more modern perspective we would what to expect these standards of living to be completely different, but it is not. There is still a accurate continuation of suffering and also a demand of violence and it still has a harsh light of day that is still captured within photographers works today.

Analysing Robert Franks Photograph

Robert Frank

Robert Frank is a Swiss-American photographer and documentary filmmaker.  His most notable work, was his book ‘The Americans’, this earned Frank comparisons to a modern-day outsider’s view of American society. Critics said that ‘The Americans’ “changed the nature of photography, what it could say and how it could say it”. The book remains the most influential photography book of the 20th century.

This was on of his most famous pieces that was in ‘The Americans’.

Trolley, New Orleans, 1955

Analysis

Context

This photograph was taken in the 1950’s in New Orleans. It shows how the American society used to travel and it clearly shows the division of the whites and the blacks. we can see that the white people are sat at the front and the black people are sat at the back, at this point in time the equal rights for blacks where nothing like what they are like in the current generation so this image almost documents that equal rights for blacks where very poor.

Conceptual

Racial segregation is shown in Frank’s photograph. There appears to be a social hierarchy from left to right. The white frames in the image separate everyone on the tran. On the left of the image you can see a white man partially hidden by a window; his separation and cover from the photograph represents how the whites were protected by society but the blacks weren’t.

Technical

In this image, Robert Frank uses different techniques to create the photo that he wanted to take. A fast shutter speed was possibly used due to the sharpness of the moving tran. Frank also uses a low ISO to create a darker image. The natural lighting of the sun also helps to create a natural looking image that captures Americas society in the middle of their day. A deep depth of field is used as well to keep the image sharp and focused.

Visual

In the photograph a high contrast is used in the black and white image to create a more dramatic image. The contrast comes from the white bars on the tran which cleverly breaks up the image into different sections as they act as natural frames. This influences the viewer to see the photograph in more detail. The large amount of tones between the black man and the white people adds even more contrast and drama to this image.

Focus And Focus Point

What is the focus point?

Autofocus points are what the camera uses to focus on a subject. You'll probably first notice them when you press the shutter halfway. Many cameras will emit a "beep," and some of the AF points will light up (often in a red or green color) in the viewfinder or on the display screen as seen below.

When using your camera in auto-focus mode, the auto-focus points will help you direct the focus to a particular location in the frame.

This is extremely convenient because the focus of your photo may not always be in the very center where the camera traditionally likes to focus and meter.

Autofocus points were introduced in film SLR cameras when the Canon EOS and Nikon F-series models were very popular. Since that time, the technology has moved into digital photography and is included in almost every DSLR as well as many point and shoot cameras.

The introduction of AF points gave photographers greater freedom in focusing on certain subjects in the photograph. It mimics the freedom of manual focus while giving you the smooth, quick operation of autofocus.

Autofocus points can also be connected to the camera's metering system in many models. This means that the camera will determine the appropriate exposure based on the chosen autofocus point, which is typically the photo's main subject.

The number of possible autofocus points depends on the camera.

Some cameras have a 9 point system, while other cameras have 11 points or even 51 points. The more AF points a camera has, the more options you have to fine-tune the focus.

After reading up about the ways in which I could use my point system on my camera, I went out with a few friends to incorporate this into my photos, these were my results:
I tried to mainly focus on small details like webs and water to create a much more significant effect to the overall picture.

Depth Of Field

What is depth of field?

DOF is the zone of acceptable sharpness within a photo that will appear in focus. In every picture there is a certain area of your image in front of, and behind the subject that will appear in focus.

This zone will vary from photo to photo. Some images may have very small zones of focus, which is called shallow depth of field. Others may have a very large zone of focus, which is called 'deep depth' of field. Three main factors that will affect how you control the depth of field of your images are: aperture (f-stop), distance from the subject to the camera, and focal length of the lens on your camera.

Depth of field diagram

In this picture below to the right there is a gradual focus change within the picture with a very narrow depth of field, allowing the photo to be in focus of one particular object. However to the left there is a much bigger depth of field stretching to infinity, allowing the backdrop to stay focused in detail at the same time.

I decided to have a go with the method in a few of my photos, and so walked around school experimenting with it, these were my results:
I thought that messing around with the lighting would allow significantly for the viewer to notice what the focal point would be, and to my opinion I think that it worked.

Robert Franks “Trolley” from his book “The Americans”

Robert Frank was a Swiss-American photographer and documentary filmmaker. His most famous work is his book “The Americans” in which he shows an outsiders view of American society in the 1950’s. His book consisted of 83 photographs.

Analysis

Technical

In this image, Robert Frank uses different techniques to create the photo that he wants. A fast shutter speed seems to be used due to the sharpness of the possibly moving trolley. Frank also uses a low ISO to create a darker image. The natural lighting of the sun also helps to create a natural looking image that captures Americas society in the middle of their day. A deep depth of field is used as well to keep the image sharp and focussed.

This image has lots of different settings working well together but the image is cleverly structured by Frank to use the rule of thirds. The bottom and top of the window run along the horizontal lines whilst the old lady and the coloured man are placed at the vertical lines. This makes the image seem instantly appealing and interesting to the human eye.

Visual

In the photograph a high contrast is used in the black and white image to create a more dramatic image. The contrast comes from the white bars which cleverly break up the image into different sections because of the natural frames. This influences the viewer to view the photograph in more detail. The wide variety of tones between the black man and the white people adds even more contrast and drama in the image.

Contextual

This photograph was taken in the 1950’s in New Orleans. It shows how the American society travels and the slight division of the whites and the blacks. As you can see, the white people are sat at the front and the black people are sat at the back, at this point in time the blacks did not have as equal rights as they do today so this documents the slow changes that have happened throughout history.

Conceptual

Racial segregation is shown in Frank’s photograph. There appears to be a social hierarchy from left to right. The white frames in the image segregate old people, white people, children and black people. On the left of the image you can see a white man partially hidden by a window; his separation and cover from the photograph represents how the whites were protected by society but the blacks weren’t.

Homework 3 ( Ernst Haas )

Ernst Haas

Ernst Haas was a photojournalist and a pioneering color photographer. During his 40-year career, the Austrian-born artist bridged the gap between photojournalism and the use of photography as a medium for expression and creativity. Ernst has a great vision in exploring photography in a more creative and unrealistic way than we actually see things in real life. Using various camera setting like shutter speed Ernst captures great visuals of urban environments, capturing the explosive and rushed vibes within these areas. He does this by producing many images containing motion blurs.

Haas was an early innovator in color photography. His images were widely spread by magazines like Life and Vogue and, in 1962, were the subject of the first single-artist exhibition of color photography at New York’s Modern museum of art. His book The Creation (1971) was one of the most successful photography books ever, selling 350,000 copies.

My Photo shoot Plan

In my photo shoot I intend to use a slow shutter speed in order to capture abstract images which are serial, like Ernst’s are. It appears that he uses mainly natural lighting for his photographs therefore as will I and the location of my shoot will be in a woodland area, where I can capture the feeling within and among the trees. This is similar to Ernst’s photography where he captures the atmosphere in the city, amongst buildings however I am going to take a different approach by expressing the feelings found within a woodland area.

Becher Inspired Photoshoot

What is a typology?

Typology is the study of types, however in photography a typology is a series of images, in which the photographer has taken many of the same genre of object (buildings, pencils etc), using roughly the same composition for each one creating that scenes of repetition about them.

Bernd And Hilla Becher

Both these Photographers were German based, and were commissioned by the government to produces typologies of specific types of buildings, as seen below.

These Photographers would go around the country taking the same composition of certain objects, which when one was taken would not look that impressive, but rather when hundreds were taken precisely from the same distance, and combined together, it creates an almost artistic creation

In response to this I decided I would walk around my home area and try to incorporate this style into my images, I chose the themes around car lights, windows with chimneys, and doors. These were some of my results:

I decided that the car topology sheets worked the best, due to the contrast between the lights and the bonnets of the car which came in different shapes.

Focal Length

What is focal length?

The focal length of the lens is the distance between the lens and the image sensor, when the subject is in focus, usually stated in millimeters (e.g., 28 mm, 50 mm, or 100 mm). In the case of zoom lenses, both the minimum and maximum focal lengths are stated, for example 18–55 mm. Changing the focal length changes the angle of view. The shorter the focal length (e.g. 18 mm), the wider the angle of view and the greater the area captured. The longer the focal length (e.g. 55 mm), the smaller the angle and the larger the subject appears to be.

I tried having a go with this concept, by focusing firstly on the backdrop rather than the central figure, and then on the figure rather than the backdrop.

In this image I chose to focus purely on the backdrop of the trees rather than the character within, as an experiment with my cameras focal length.

This image however I chose to focus on the closer object to the lens, which happened to be a bee on a flower, therefore blurring out the backdrop rather than keeping it clear.

How To Analyse Photogrpahs

To analyze photographs we use the methods of technical, visual, contextual and conceptual. These factors help to create an in-depth analysis focusing on not only the ways in which the photo was taken but why it was taken and the hidden meanings behind it, or pehaps the story it tells us. These stories and feelings given off can be interpreted in different ways by different people.

Technical

The technical elements within a photograph and what it means when we analyse them is the manual settings and how they have been adjusted. This involves things such as;

Lighting, Aperture, ISO, White Balance, Shutter Speed, focal length.

Visual

The visual aspect of analysing photos is simply using photographic terms to describe how the picture has been edited or taken. This consists of ;

Colour, Tone, Texture, Shape, Contrast, Pattern, Composition, Leading Lines.

Contextual

Contextual relates to the period of time the photo was taken and how the time and place affects what the photo portrays. This can link to many factors in society. Contextual is simply;

Ones understanding, Deeper meaning, Additional knowledge Historical context, Personal context, Cultural/Social/Political context.

Conceptual

The conceptual part of analysing photos refers to a persons ideas relating to or based on mental thoughts. Essentially it is the meaning behind a photograph and it is the part in which you give reasons why a photographer may have chosen to take the photo/taken it in a certain way. The key words associated with conceptual are;

Ideas, Meaning, Reasoning.

Focus and Focus points

How do we focus?

In order to demonstrator a sharpness to an image, and allow and intention to focus and not. The works also together in order to change the distance of lenses, from the sensor and or the filming order to control the way in which light is captured. This is also done by how the light coverage’s precisely a point within the plane of the film or a  DSLR sensor, this means the image will become more in focus .

when looking through a viewfinder of any DSLR camera and you will see several dots, or squares, that represent individual points at which the camera is capable of focusing. This is in order to clearly view the focusing points ,even if this might seem obvious.  but not all of them are created equal. When you press the shutter button  halfway, some of these points will light up, indicating that everything at that specific spot is crystal clear and your photo will be nice and sharp.

this is an example of cross focus points to hep with ensuring the positioning of the camera.

However, the speed at which your camera can focus on one of the points, as well as how accurate the focus will be, depends greatly on whether the individual focusing point is a single or cross-type. Understanding the differences in how they operate can help you decide which ones to use to take better photos. This is a further example :

there are also many ranges within focus points, this can develop  of change the point within your camera with a button, and will be brought up upon the screen, showing the range of points.

below you can see my development of capturing the same focus point within a dogs face too.
