Street Photography – Homework

Planning

Task – Take 100-250 photos in an urbanised environment with people as the main focus.

Models/Props – Friends and strangers

Camera Settings – I will use a quick shutter speed of about 1/100-1/500 depending on how fast the subjects are moving as I plan on photographing them whilst they naturally move around. I will use a low ISO as the area I will take photos in will be well lit with street lighting.

Lighting – Natural lighting will mostly be used however may be necessary to use a flash to highlight key aspects in my models face

Location – In town as this is an urbanised area

Context – Photographing strangers and friends without them aware of the photo being taken in order to capture a realistic view of how they would be behaving.

Concept – To capture street photographs in the style of Vivian Maier and Robert Frank.

Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier (1926-2009) was an American street photographer born in New York City. Her work was unknown and unpublished during her lifetime. In 2007,  collectors found some of her prints and negatives in boxes. Her images were first published on the internet in 2008. Her work has now been exhibited in North America, Europe, Asia and South America. A lot of details about Maier’s life remains unknown.

Photo Analysis

Image result for robert frank

The first thing which caught my eye when observing this picture was the clear use of the rule of thirds. The bus itself create natural lines almost along the horizontal lines when following the rule of thirds. I believe this helps the viewer the see how the picture is made up of several portrait pictures. There is a large tonal range within this picture, with lighter tones towards the top and darker tones towards the bottom. The tonal range can also be seen within the skin tone of the people on the bus, from the left hand side a white man is presented and on the right hand side we are presented with a black person. We can clearly identify that Robert Frank would have used a fast shutter speed in order to take this photograph. This is because the picture is of a moving subject and would require a fast shutter speed to prevent a blur in the image. With a fast shutter speed he was able to capture a sharp photo. There is also multiple textures inside of this image, for example there is the texture of the trolley at the bottom of the image. The blots on the trolley also add another texture to the image.  Moreover, there is the texture of the windows at the top of the image, these look smooth.

This image is split into 3 main sections, the top middle and bottom. The middle part is the main focus which contains the main subjects of the people. Where as the top and bottom contain some interesting textures and reflections but this is not what stands out and catches the viewers eye immediately. There is a definite contrast within this image, with the black and whites exaggerated. There is a clear contrast between the white poles/bars separating the people and the rest of the bus, perhaps influencing us that they are a main factor of the image. This photo has been captured in natural light which is expressed in the reflections at the top of the image. I think that the use of the picture being in black and white emphasizes the different races.

This image taken by Robert Franks was captured in the 1950’s. This image was also taken in America, New Orleans. At this time period,  America experienced marked economic growth – with an increase in manufacturing and home construction among a post–World War II economic expansion. At this time period it was uncommon for photographers to tackle the issue of racism which is a key theme portrayed within this photo. The time period when this photo was taken was a time of racism and prejudice. Although the photo may have been an ‘accident’ as Robert Frank himself said, it may have been a powerful and strongly influential picture to help the problem with racism.

It looks as if the different races are separated from each other. The white man is at the front of the trolley while the rest are sat behind him. This can connote the fact that at this time people like that where protected by society and had more ‘privilege’. The different facial expressions of the different people can say quite a lot about the image. They all have the same serious look about them. This can represent the lives of these people. The layout of the characters in the image also represents the different classes, for example the man at the front could be a higher class than the one at the back however we do not know this it is just interpretation. The white bars can again also show the separation between the different classes.

Photojournalism

What Is Photojournalism?

Photojournalism is a form of journalism that uses images rather than words in order to tell a story or report some significant news. It is now usually used to refer to still images but in some cases it also refers to the use of videos in broadcast journalism. Photojournalism is distinguished from other close genres of photography such as street photography by using a strict ethical framework which demands that the work is honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strict journalistic terms. Photojournalists must be well informed and knowledgeable about events happening in the world. They deliver news in a creative and entertaining format.

Photojournalism started off by being inspired by war photography in order to create an accurate representation of war. They would aim to show the suffering and complete devastation of the wars to potentially prevent these wars from occurring. Due to this there was a large expansion of photography which soon inspired the Golden age – This is often considered to be roughly the 1930s through the 1950s. It was made possible by the development of the compact commercial  camera in 1925 and so journalist true flexibility in taking pictures.

Photojournalism goes hand in hand with street photography in the sense that they both aim to present a truthful representation of a situation in which people are unaware of and therefore help to make an impact. They are both hard hitting genres for some people to view and really embrace the viewer to feel as if they are in the scene themselves.

This photograph is an example of photojournalism. It displays an unexpected real life situation which is a devastating event. It is hard for the viewer to intake this kind of image as it is extremely saddening and makes you think how unfortunate some are. The positive thing which comes out of this kind of photography is that it makes us want to help people in these areas and positively impact the world.

Henri Cartier – Bresson and The Decisive Moment

Henri Cartier – Bresson

Henri Cartier-Bresson was born 1908 in France and was the oldest of five children. He died at the age of 95 in 2004 after having contributed immensely to the photography community. Bresson was a French humanist photographer considered a master of truthful and straightforward photography, and an early user of 35 mm film. He developed the genre of street photography, and viewed photography as capturing a decisive moment.

His parents supported him financially so Henri could pursue photography more freely and advance within the passion of his. Henri also sketched and also enjoyed painting as this inspired him for many of his work. While also being highly involved in photojournalism and painting he was inspired as surrealist photographers such as Lhote’s “rule-laden” approach to art. While traveling around the world, he become inspired by different forms of art and artists, people and even the environment that he was surrounded by. He was also captured by German soldiers which further inspired lots of his work within the suffering and journalism of war.

 The Decisive Moment

The decisive moment is a book in which was written by the photographer, originally  titled ‘Images à la Sauvette’ with the English name ‘The decisive moment’.  It was published in France in 1952 and included a collection of 126 of his best photographs. Within the book Henrie Cartier – Bresson quotes ‘To me, photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.’

Analysis

I am very intrigued by this image due to the fact it portrays a very true sense of realism and truthfulness of war in these desperate and poor countries. It really engages with the audience to achieve a sense of sorriness and sympathy for the young children displayed in the picture. There is a great use of texture within this image to show the sheer state and torn up areas in which these boys call their playground. Especially within the walls and flooring we can see the amount of rubble that has been blown up amongst the buildings creating a pathway of danger. I believe the photographer has really thought out the positioning and composition of this photograph. The blown out wall creates a natural frame which gives the impression that we are looking into a portal of an imaginary world. It may seem imaginary to us in our 1st world countries however the photographer has done this to show how some hopeless and innocent children have to live their lives and it indicates how we are unaware of it as we believe it to be imaginary or seemingly impossible. Further on than the natural frame is positioned a street through the middle of the photograph. This helps to create this portal effect in the way that it guides us down through the scene. This use of leading lines allows the viewer to witness how large the scale of destruction is. This image proposes many ideas which I believe would be an interesting to explore within my work by displaying a series of unexpected areas in which I live that people pretend to be ignorant towards or even do not realise are there.

Contribution To Magnum

Magnum is a website which allows many photographers to upload their images and show a sense of who they are, but mostly used by the photographers that surround photojournalism. Bresson contributed by providing photos inspired by people in his habitat and where he lived at the time. He frequently uploads images of his artwork onto this website which are effective and look very much as an inspiration to his photo work.

To me his work is highly effective in ways of conveying a story within a relevance of the modern and earlier times within history. He  achieves many successful images which emote a sense of change or purely just expose the true elements of some peoples livelihood.

Street Photography

What is street photography?

This genre of photography is linked to documentary photography. It started as a way to document what happened to people in certain places at a certain time. Street photographers document people and their behaviors in public places (not just streets.) It is used as a recording of history, events and news. Framing and timing are key elements within street photography to allow an achievement within this genre. Street photographers display scenes of people unaware that the photo is being taken. This method creates a very truthful and realistic image, making the viewer feel as if they are in the picture. This structure of a photograph being captured without creating a posed appearance is called a candid photograph.

Environmental Portraiture Homework

Arnold Newman

Image result for Arnold Newman

Arnold Newman was born in 1918 and is acknowledged as the pioneer of the environmental portrait, he is also known for his still life and abstract photography. The reason I was intrigued  by Newman’s images is because not only does he show people in their natural workplaces like the typical environmental portrait photos, but he also captures images which further communicate a lifestyle choice chosen by the person in the photo in a more in-depth sense than just their workplace. I feel that this approach creates a stronger connection between the person in the photo and the audience because it allows them to feel as if they know the person being photographed. He released many books throughout his life and is an important contributor of portraits to publications such as life and vanity fair.

Photo Analysis

Image result for Arnold Newman

I am inspired by this photo and visually appreciate it due to the simplicity yet great effect it has. The simplicity comes through the use of only three real colours, thus being white, black and grey which strongly contrast each other. This strong contrast helps the viewer identify the key elements to the photo which is the piano and the pianist. This photo comes under the category of environmental portraiture due to the fact that we can understand something about the mans life due to what is shown in the photograph. In this case we know he is a piano player and perhaps lives a simple life due to the way in which the photo has very little detail.

Planning

Task – Take 150-250 formal portrait photos that show an understanding of environmental portraits.

Location – Sporting locations such as football pitch and skate park.

Subjects – My friends with their sporting equipment on in the related location.

Camera settings – 1/250 sec, f/4, ISO 100 (most likely will be adjusted slightly up and downwards)

Props – Model, football boots, football, helmet, bike/skateboard.

Lighting – Natural lighting, artificial for the night shots.

Concept – To photograph images in the style of Arnold Newman

My Response

Environmental Portraiture (Extension Task)

Within my portraiture photography I have in mind to try indulge into the realism side of photography and explore and portray images which enhance a sense of shock on how many people chose or more importantly have to live their lives.

Due to these intentions I have chosen to explore the work of photographers which I believe best represent their subject matter truthfully in order to be inspired to also convey these similar ideas in my work. I believe this communication of real life situations link very much to documentary photography in the way that they create a sense of awareness on how some people are living their lives.

Sally Mann

Image result for sally mann

Sally Mann is an American photographer, best known for her large-format, black and white photographs – at first of young children, then later of landscapes suggesting decay and death. Her environmental portraiture photos focus on the shocking and some what controversial behaviors of younger children which influence the idea that not all young children are innocent and sweet.

The photo above is a clear representation of the intentions that the photographer set out to convey. The innocent and harmless look upon the girls face suggests that she is the stereotypical sweet young girl. However this is clearly juxtaposed with the cigarette in which she holds which has many connotations, one being that she may no longer have the ability to conform to the standards that society inflicts upon young girls. Girls are expected to always look neat and tidy and display the correct behaviors at all times. It is a huge shock to many to see younger children performing in such behaviors as seen through this photograph which the photographer has clearly set up to challenge the dominant ideologies about young girls. The fact that the photo is in black and white helps to portray the idea that it is a disgraceful act to be smoking at that age. It would appear that this photo likely used a small aperture as the background is very much out of focus where as the foreground is is very detailed.

August Sander

August Sander was a German portrait and documentary photographer.  Sander has been described as “the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century. Sander was born in Herdof, the son of a carpenter working in the mining industry. While working at a local mine, Sander first learned about photography by assisting a photographer who was working for a mining company. With financial support from his uncle, he bought photographic equipment and set up his own darkroom.

Analysis Of August Sander’s Work

Image result for august sander

This picture is clearly an environmental portraiture showing a young man carrying some bricks. This is an environmental portraiture because the image gives us an indication about the person being photographed, in this case we know he is a brick layer. We can clearly see that this image is in black and white and split into sections. These sections are as followed, the mans body, his head and then the bricks in which he is carrying. The lighting appears to be up high, illuminating the mans facial features and bricks. This image is also highly contrasted, the man himself is well lit up which contrasts with the very dark background.

There is a large tonal range within this image which is evident where his face is a lot lighter than the rest of his body. There is a significant amount of light directed more towards the bricks and the background is completely black.  This use of light it used to signify the profession in which this man involved himself in. The ISO of the image appears to be quite high, we know this because we can see most of the detail within the mans clothing as well as the bricks. If the ISO was lower this detail would not be so evident. There are various textures within this image for example the rough and creased clothing as well as the textures involved in the bricks.

The concept behind this image can be interpreted in a variety of ways. In my opinion the photographer is trying to portray the idea of child labor by using a male that looks rather young doing a highly difficult and tiring job. However the male is not quite young enough to maybe fit into the category of ‘child’ therefore the photographer could also be referring to the times when people would have to get jobs at a very young age to survive and look after their family.

This image was taken by August Sanders in 1928 and is called ‘The Brick Layer’.  The original name for this image is ‘Handlanger’ which is German for Henchman

Environmental Portraiture

What Is Environmental Portraiture?

Environmental portraiture refers to images that often show people in specific locations that indicate something to the viewer about their personality, routines, likes and dislikes. Photographers often photograph people in places that they live or work to give us clues about their lives and how they have lived or are currently living.

Examples Of Environmental Portraits Found of Google

Image result for environmental portraiture

Image result for environmental portraiture

In both of these examples, the image is set up and the subject, thus being the person, is aware that the photo is being taken. This is called a formal portrait. The top image shows the subject in a place which clearly gives the viewer an understanding of the persons hobbies. The second image show the subjects in their natural workplace. The surroundings and backgrounds in environmental portraits is a key factor as it is used to convey further information about the person being photographed.

Editing My Images For Final Piece

Edit 1

I belive this edit is good and has a strong relationship with my inspirations work. There is a strong contrast emerging between the persons skin colour and clothing with the background. The composition is effective as the main subject is dead in the centre making the viewer view that straight away, and the background is plain therefore it is beneficial to have the main subject in the middle. I believe this edit portrays the idea of hidden identity which I intended to do however I am not pleased with the image as a whole due to the background. I believe if I change the background to have a street or wall it would be more effective in revealing a story and creating a more surreal feeling/look.

This is the final edit for photo 1. I believe that changing the background from plain to this sinister looking carpark roof image has completely changed how people may  interpret the image. The background has connotations of crime and badness as it is taken at night, which is when most crimes happen and the light on the left appears to hide part of the image relating to a person hiding their identity when causing a crime. However the over exposed light on the left can reflect goodness, contrasting with the darker side on the right relating to badness. This may reflect the person in the centre who has to decide his path to take, the good path or bad path. Due to the fact I have edited the person in such way to distort any facial expression it leaves the viewer to decide what the person’s identity is like and how the background may or may not relate to it.

Edit 2

Using the same method as the edit above I was able to achieve another successful surreal image. Firstly I chose to use the colour orange as it fits in with the motion blurs which were created when I originally took the photo. These motion blurs were created by taking a photo with a long shutter speed, around 2 seconds, and panning the camera to the side. I was able to get my model in focus by holding the camera still for the first second facing him and then panning for the other second. In my opinion these motion blurs create a sense of movement which fits in well with my edit as the slime is moving as suggested by the falling droplets.

Edit 3

I believe this is my strongest edit. Not only is the digital manipulation at a high standard but the meaning and feelings portrayed are also very strong. Again, to some extent I have incorporated the running theme of blank identity however slightly altered this image to produce some sort of facial expression. In my opinion the facial expression, mainly within the eyes and how they appear to be bruised, reflects upon the theme of child abuse again crime. I believe the underexposed background gives the image a sinister and almost haunting feeling. The dark background is strongly contrasted with the color of slime upon the models face which focuses the attention on the person.

Edit 4

I like this photo due to the emotion and story it creates and tells us. I believe this photo has a sense of imprisonment as it appears the people are stuck in this enclosed area. The background within this photo is de-saturated to some extent which I think helps to add to the dark and depressing atmosphere. This photo uses the technique of leading lines within the structural features leading us away from the models deeper into the picture to view the rusty and old man made structures. The vibrant colors of the models create a strong contrast with the background relating to the opposition of light vs dark or good/bad.

Presenting My Work

After having reflected my images I have come to the decision that I will use only two of the original 4 images I intended on using. The edits I have selected to use are shown below. I have selected only these images as I think they are my strongest edits in representing abstract photography and telling a story. Also they pair well together as they are of similar colors and tones. These images link to abstract photography in the way it is a piece of art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but rather seeks to achieve its surreal effect by using shapes, colours, and textures. I think that the image with the motion blur lines relates directly to the photographer Ernst haas which was on of the photographers I researched as part of this abstract project. Ernst haas often includes motion blurs within his photographs to indicate a sense of movement and chaos which is what i have incorporated within my final piece. The motion blur lines not only work well with the dripping effect on the persons face but they add to the abstract effect in the way that it is not a usual and commonly seen thing.

The Research and Selected Photos for Final Piece

My Research and Chosen Images For My Final piece

The Research

After having researched Pinterest I came across a selection Images under the hashtag ‘desolateputoface’ which really was intriguing in my opinion. I liked how the images portrayed a surreal and unrealistic approach yet still contained an understanding of what the image is. These Images present us with unreal representations of a persons face and they link to the idea of hidden identity. Below are a couple examples of the photos created by the anomonys photographer/graphic designer.

Analysing This Work

The thing which first inspired me to take a closer and more detailed look into this style of work was the vibrant colours used to create the surrealistic figure. Not only does this image look interesting and creative but it give’s an impression of hidden identity. It appears that the editor/photographer has purposely covered the person in slime to portray a sense of equality and that we are all humans no matter your skin colour, race or religion and therefore meaning we should be treated equally. A lot of the images appear to be males in the streets which may be referring to gang members and in this case the dripping slime relates to the fact that they are ruining and destroying their lives by doing bad. The part of the images that are not slime are fairly basic and unedited, contrasting with the slime.

Choosing my Images

At this point, I didn’t believe that many of my images from the several shoots i have collated were suitable for this theme/genre of photography. I decided it would be best to do a photoshoot to ensure that i could get the best possible images that could relate to this style of work and best portray a sense of surrealism and abstraction. The intention for this shoot was to capture portrait shots with an abstract background to further relate to the theme of the project. Thus in mind, i intend to take photos behind pier road carpark where there is some great structural features which hold the carpark together. Also I will collate images on streets to link to my inspirations images.

Photoshoot

I believe this photoshoot was highly effective in achieving the aims I set out to do. Thus being getting some quality portraiture shots which could be further adapted to replicate a similar yet personalised image to my inspiration. I believe the natural lighting in the daylight photos was very helpful in allowing me capture the detail in my models face and the background too. The flash which was used in the nighttime and darker locations was effective in creating a focus on the model/models as the flash highlighted the foreground, being the model, and not the background.

Selecting My Images

In the process of selecting my images, I had to carefully go through this last photoshoot and start narrowing down my images to the best 50 then 25, 10 and then finally to arrive at the ones I intended on using. I wanted to select the images that showed a good understanding of using the camera for example using ISO and shutter speed and those that of course had the best lighting composition and were most appropriate to reflect a sense of abstraction whether it be in the editing process or the photo how it is.

Selected Images
