Technical: This image has been taken in a studio using studio lights to make the image as bright as possible. we can see one light shadow which helps define the model from the background. A very white light for example LED’s would have been used to give the closest possible to true white. The white Balance would have also been adjusted to make sure there were no yellow or blue tones. Despite most of the image being in white it has a high contrast due to the dark areas in the hair. This image was taken on a hight aperture which has made the whole image sharp and in focus.

He took all of his photos in black and white which helps focus on the peoples facial expressions rather than distracting colours.
Street Photography
street photography is unmediated, documenting every day life. The subjects in the photos are often not expecting to be photographed or do not notice it at all. They are often taken in the street but are not limited to this, as long as they are un-staged pictures that tell us more about a persons life, personality and story. It originated from people documenting time when cameras were first invented and is now used as an educational and creative way to give people a different perspective on the society. Street photographs aim to capture a persons emotions and often portray a certain class or group of people.
What is Candid Photography?
Candid photography is photography of people who are not posing, they are often minding their own business of interacting wit other people. the subject may be aware that a photo is being taken however they will not be directly interacting with the photographer. This style of photography is achieved in many ways, for example when the subject is in motion, or surprised in a situation. One of the first photographer to take candid photos was Dr. Erich Salomon a German photographer who took candid photos of wealthy men and politicians in the late 1920’s.

Anthony Kurtz was born in America and is now based in Berlin and San Francisco. He specializes in environmental portraiture and his work has been used as commercial, editorial and art-documentary. His photos tend to be in the moment an unexpected however we can still see the strong ideas of formal portraits, the subjects in them tend to be in their natural location for example work place. He often works a lot with lights, mixing natural and studio to create mood and curiosity in the photographs.

Arnold Newman
Arnold Newman is an American photographer born in 1918. studied art under a scholarship at the University of Miami 36-8. he is known as a pioneer of environmental portraiture but also took still life and abstract photos. He started his career working at chain portrait studios in Philadelphia, which helped him gain experience and an eye for portraiture. In his free time he experimented with abstraction and documentary photography which combined with his job helped to create his eye for environmental portraits. His “Artists Look Like This” exhibition in his Philadelphia museum attracted nationwide attention. In 1946 he moved to New York and opened and opened his own studio and joined the American Society of Magazine Photographers. He often took photographs of well know people such as politicians, industrialists and musicians, these photos sometimes had a controversial perspective and told a story about each subject.
Technical: The light used in this photo is natural and artificial, in the background their is windows letting in light for above and we can also see that his face is being lit up by florescent lights. The shadows are in the middle of his face leading me to think that there is light coming from both sides. this photograph has a high contrast due to the light split on the top and bottom. The whole photo is in focus which leads me to think it was taken on a wide angle lens, we can also tell this because his face is slightly distorted from how close the camera was to the subject. A fast shutter speed was probably used to create a sharp under exposed image. The image has an interesting white balance, in the dark areas it looks blue and in the light areas it looks more yellow.
Visual: There is an unnatural green tint to this image which creates an eerie effect, the dark shadowed tone also adds to this. there is a lot of texture and pattern in the background of this image which adds details to the scene. There is clear repetition of pattern on the ceiling which leads back to a vanishing point, this also helps to create depth. the pillar either side of the subject act as a frame and add symmetry.
Contextual: Aarnold Newman deliberately tried to make Aldried Krupp look bad due to his connections with Hitler in the war. Krupp was friends with Hitler and was allowed to use prisoners as slave labor in awful conditions. As a Jewish photographer Arnold Newman wanted to reflect his views and hatred for Krupp, this was hard because he had to do it without him knowing.
Conceptual: By shining a light from both sides it creates harsh shadows which Arnold said made him look like the devil. the lines on the ceiling down the center of the image remind us of the train tracks at Auschwitz. When we know the story behind this image it becomes a lot more intimidating and evil. The green lighting also reflects this idea and makes the image look cold and heartless.

Environmental Portraiture
environmental portraiture are images taken of people in their natural environments, this is commonly though of as their place of work but could also include their home of situation in their daily life. most environmental portraits focus on a person in relation to their surroundings, this could be that their surrounding reflect or contrast with the person. the point of this style of photography is to shed light on characters lives that may otherwise be unknown to us. in a way this counts as documentary photography due to the factual elements that can come from them. Rather than being taken in a studio with false lighting, environmental portraits are taken in the moments, this means lighting and settings in the image all help to tell a story about the person.

Final Selections
I chose these six photos for my final selections from my colour harmonies and contrasts shoot because I thought they showed a range of styles, patterns and colours. I took these photos in the style of two famous abstract photographers however for my final image I would like to edit them using skills I have acquired during this project. Using these two images from my last shoot I re sized and rotated them so they were the same dimensions. I then added the blue photo as a separate layer over the pink one and experimented with blend tool.
For the first edit i used the blend setting lighten, this removed all the white areas from the blue image so that the pink showed through. This photo did fit the abstract theme however the colours made the photo a bit disjointed and you could still see the original image. For my final image I wanted something more traditionally abstract that showed a mixture of all the techniques I have learned through this project such as shape and pattern, colour and texture. The second image for me showed this the best.

Homework Week 5
Mark Lovejoy
Mark Lovejoy is a painter and photographer from Texas. Alough from a glance his work looks like photographs of think mixed paint colours,m when we look closer we notice the detail in the images. Io make each image Mark mixes a variety of pigments with oils, resins and drying agents. he then takes multiple images when the paint is wet and dry so they can be manipulated and played with later. The light reflections and textures are retouched by editing which helps the images looks so detailed and created the illusion that they are standing of the page. When the paint has completely dried they no longer retail the same glossy look, this is why his work is thought of more as photography than painting because all that remains is the photograph.
Tamara Lorenz
Tamara Lorenz is a German artist and photographer who creates various abstract constructions using different materials. a common theme running through her work is large areas of plane colour which contrast with the colours of the. the texture provided by the edges and shadows of the shapes makes the images look more 3D and ads depth. The photographs creates a type of illusion that becomes more complex the more you look at it.

Texture Editing
Using Photoshop I changed the hue ans saturation of selected areas of the image to replicate the bright colours we see in Frank Hallam Day’s work. This Image that I took had similar textures to his series of photos on ship hulls, it also has interesting summitry and pattern which reflects his style.
I chose to edit this photo of the sea wall because the horizontal lines reflected the style of Frank’s ship hull series. I changed the colour of the cement wall so it looked more vibrant, this helped the weathered detail in the picture stand out.
On the same shoot I also took some photos in the style of Aaron Siskind, originally I didn’t like this photo due to the lack of colour and depth, however after changing it to black and white and adjusting the contrast and brightness the photo shows the style of the photographer. I also edited this photo of the textures in a piece of wood on the beach, the light and dark tones in this photograph reflect those in Aaron’s work. I used a long lens and a low aperture to take this photo which helped to blur the background, making the patterns of the wood look sharp and detailed.
Homework week 4
Aaron Siskind
Aaron Siskind was an American photographer who’s work was popular in the 20th century. he became interested in photography in 1930 and joined a group of documentary photographers however after a time his work moved to a more abstract style. His photographs generally involve some sort of close up texture and his arrangement of objects within the frame was admired by other photographers in the abstract expressionist movement at the time. In the 1940’s and 50’s his work contributed to the avant-garde movement in America.
Frank Hallam Day
Frank Hallam Day is a photographer based in Washington who takes photos of ship hulls. His photos are have a common theme of vibrant colours interesting contrast in textures and perfect horizons. He started taking photos when he was 15, using a film camera and developing photos in a dark closet. He also has an interest in painting and we can see this style in his photos due to the bold colours and painted effect they give. The juxtaposition of the rough, rusted, paint pealed boats and the smooth water that reflects creates an interesting concept.
