Final piece – planning for mock exam

I am going to edit my final images on photoshop and print the out in various sizes, I will then frame them or mount them of foam board. this will help the photos stand out on their own and as the photos are already quite detailed a simple frame will help this stand out and not over complicate them.

I also want to experiment with my editing and try to display them in a more interesting way.

I will then frame both the image with a beveled edge on poster black poster board. I will print a variety of images and try different combinations of black and white urban images and coloured natural image to see what looks best.

with my other photos which are being printed i will display them by either backing them on foam board or creating a frame.

I will print this image out in A3 because I think it is a striking image and will stand out and show its details in the background better as a larger print. I want to to either mount this image on white foam board of frame it in white. the white boarder will help the writing pop and stand out oven more. This image does not fit in with my most recent artist study however I think it sums up some of the new skills and styles I have learned whilst doing this landscape project. For this reason I am choosing to present this image on its own.

My A4 print will be my edit inspired by Merve Ozaslan’s work, I combined two photos that I took to create a collage which shows an urban and natural environment in one image. I will back this image on white foam board with a thin boarder to help the highlights on the image stand out.

These two images will be printed on A5 and displayed as a pair. both of these images were edited from one old image which I then replaced the sea in the image with a new photo I had taken. The idea behind this collage is to show the balance and contrast between the natural elements.

Final shoot and editing

To create the edits for my final artist study I took photos of buildings around town which show of the urban landscapes and show the industrial side to the island. I tried to capture areas that are not always in the public eye, for example i took pictures down side roads rather than on main roads that are seen by everyone.

I also took some black and white minimal pictures of houses around the island, I made sure that the buildings  looked like they stood out in their surroundings to reflect the work of my artist reference.

My artist reference uses old images and incorporates them with new images to create collages combining two worlds. I looked through my mum’s old pictures to find the perfect images which I could edit in the same style as  Used

Case Study-merve ozaslan

Merve Born in Istanbul, Turkey and graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University as an ceramic artist in 2010. She is a ceramics jewellery artist but is most popularly known for her series “natural act” which is a group of collages based on the questions of the relation between nature and the humanity. The main feature of this series is the unexpected use of selective colouring of black and white vintage photographs and new coloured photographs which creates a parallel meaning to the original storyline of the photograph. She spends a lot of time looking for  the perfect vintage photo to manipulate, when she finds one she instantly starts thinking of how it could be manipulated in her head.

Technical: This image is made up from two photographs, one of a cliff edge with rough water at the bottom stretching out to sea. the second photo is of the edge of an old building. Both of the images were taken using natural lighting which was probably not with direct sun light due to the lack of harsh shadows. both of the photographs have a large depth of field because they are both landscapes. we know they were both taken with a fast shutter speed due to how sharp the images are, the waves would also be blurred if it was a longer shutter speed.

Visual:  The main image of the building is in black and white and has a high contrast, the sky in the background is white washed which helps the texture of the building stand out. There is no other distraction in the background which helps the building stand out and take more of our focus. The photo of the sea has been edited with a filter which gives it a blue tint and enhances the shadows giving the image more texture. The image of the sea has been cut out and placed perfectly over the edge of the building to look as if the picture is on the wall in real life. the photo has also been taken from a low angle making us feel we are looking up at the wall. although we know that the image has been manipulated it creates a sense of fantasy by combining two polar opposites.

Conceptual: this image is made out of two completely separate photography, the black and white image is one the artist found and did not take herself. Like the rest of her work she combines old photos with knew ones, this old photo acts like a canvas for the new image. The coloured photo represents nature and contrasts with the urban black and white image to show a visual representation of how diverse landscapes and out surroundings can look.

Hannah Hoch and the early pioneers of photo collage / montage

Hannah Hoch was a german artist who focused on the style dada and focused on collage in her work. She was born in 1889 and died in 1978 meaning she lived through two world wars, this is the reason for the dada and political influence in her work. Dada was an artistic movement formed in 1919 in Switzerland which rejected the monarchy and the military, they felt art should have no restrictions.  She was a pioneer of photomontage which focused on the issues of gender and the figure of women in in modern society which made her a pioneer of feminist art. She was also well known for her political collages where she reworked images and text fro the mass media as a critique of the failings of the weimar german government.  Her inspiration came from the collage work of Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters, both of their work incorporate a dynamic layered style.

Altered Realities

Altered reality is changing a normal photo in a creative way, this could be though the use of manipulated camera settings or post processing such as computer or hand editing. The photographer can be creative by using of lines, form and colour, expressing ideas or feelings in a non-traditional style.  This style is often used to create fantasy worlds out of existing ones by combining different settings. the way in which this is done can be very obvious or settle depending on the desired effect. they can be made to look fairly realistic and convincing or the editing can be more obvious and artistic.

psycho geography photoshoot

The photos I took on this shoot are interesting because they show the deterioration of the urban area. A lot of the photos are more close up and abstract but I think these help to paint a picture of the urban landscape as a whole through detailed photos. I found when I was walking around and exploring an area i though I was familiar with I found interesting things which I would not have noticed if I hadn’t come there to specifically takes photos.

I selected and edited my favorite images from this shoot which I thought showed the area I walked around the best. They display the idea of disposable goods and and how the weather and environment has effected urban areas.

my initial ideas

I am interested at exploring the and taking photos at the airport. I think there would be a lot of opportunities to take interesting urban landscapes  and areas which you would not notice at a glance, for example the old aircraft hanger and rows of cars in the car park.

I will also walk around urban areas areas near where I live which I have never looked at in detail before and take photos of what I come across. This will be interesting to discover new things in an area that I though I was familiar with.

I am interested in presenting my journey practically for example as a collage or  scrapbook. I have looked into other photographers who do a similar thing and I found work by Nicola Hilditch. it was called ‘Scrapbooking The City…Psychogeography Experiment!’ She walked around her city with no particular destination in mind, collecting interesting objects and taking photographs to create a representation of the city in the form of a scrap book.

Photo shoot plan:

Concept:  After researching the area i want to explore and looking at work from other photographers, I am going to take inspiration from the style of their work and apply it to my own photos but also adapt it to my own journey in the shoot.

Location: I am going to take photos around a warehouse and behind shops in my local area. The area has a main roar running through it which means people see it on a daily basis but never look at it in detail.

Lighting: I will use natural lighting to take these photos and I will take them in the afternoon to avoid over exposed images with light flares.

Camera settings: I will take the photos using the manual  expose setting and experiment with long shutter speed and the waves.

Psycho-Geography

Psycho-geography describes the effect of a geographical location on the emotions and behaviour of individuals, it is often recorded through photography which shows a journey or exploration and a location. it is a mixture of photography and geography in which the photographers drifts or wonders around an urban environment documenting it in various ways. photos, time lapses, scrapbooks or even drone footage can be used to show the location and urban environment being explored. Guy Debord a theorist in the 20th century described psycho-geography as “the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organised or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.”

the idea is that photographer explore and go off the path they take everyday, by doing this you may discover new thing which have always been in a familiar area but have never been photographed or looked at in detail. In our everyday lives we are constantly on the go  and not paying attention to where we are. By putting your mind on your location and focusing on everything around you we can find new things or see familiar ones in a new light raising awareness of urban areas in our everyday life

Lewis Baltz – Typologies

I am going to use the idea of typologies to present my photos from my last shoot inspired by Lewis Baltz.  I have already studied his photography of urban landscapes linking to new topographic so i will use these photos and select and display them in the form of typologies.

San Quentin Point 1982 Lewis Baltz born 1945 Purchased with funds provided by the Photography Acquisitions Committee 2011 http://www.tate.org.uk/art/work/P79978

I like the way these photos by Lewis Baltz have been displayed his photos in frames with wide white boarders, and hung them in a group on the wall.

using my photos from this shoot I selected the photos of walls and edited them into black and white. I then arranged them into a grid format which helped to show the pattern in the geometric shapes in each wall.

new topographics Photo shoot

Photoshoot Plan

Concept:  After researching the New Topographic, urban landscapes and the photographer Lewis Baltz  I am going to take inspiration from the style of their work and apply it to my own photos.

Location: I am going to take photos at the industriel estate at La Collette, we will walk from Harve des Pas along the coast line and through the industrial estate and along the harbor taking pictures relating to our topic of New Topographic. The area has a wide range of urban scenes which i can take pictures of.

Lighting: I will use natural lighting to take these photos and I will take them in the afternoon to avoid over exposed images with light flares.

Camera settings: I will take the photos using the manual  expose setting and experiment with long shutter speed and the waves.

Contact Sheets:

I also edited some other photos that I took in a different location. They were in the style  of  Nicholas Nixon’s landscapes so i edited them in black and white and enhanced the highlights to give them a higher contrast whilst still making them look faded.
