First ideas for the future of st helier project

I got the inspiration for my project to have this idea of peeling back parts of images to reveal an old-style wallpaper. Was when we were on location on the building sites, in which we walked into a house that was midway through being knocked down in which all of the walls had been ripped out. As I walked through the house i came to a room which  i could only assume would have been a child bedroom, in which the only thing remaining was a small strip of an animation themed wallpaper, which gave me the idea to have this sort of torn out effect to reveal an old fashion wallpaper.

I first experiment with this idea, from using an image of a finance building down at the waterfront, I have the idea to use the wallpaper the would stereo-typically see in a grandparent house; As the connotation that many people have to their grandparents is that they are very warm, opening and loving, whereas in contrast to the finance industry in Jersey, which has been given the reputation of being very harsh, cold and negative. so I thought that by placing the two very opposite messages to get would create a nice juxtaposition.

Experimenting with colour and black and white

By turning this image into black and white I think that it is the best outcome that i have created as it will create the greatest contrast with the wallpaper that I plan to edit in. So will help the design to stand out best, I think that I will do this for most of the images within this project.

I don’t plan to use this image again as I think that the colour of the sky is very unnatural and I dont like the way that it looks with the rest of the image

Out of the two colour designs that I have created I think it is the one that I plan to develop further. As I feel that the colour scheme within this image has more of a neutral colour palette which I think when combined with the wallpaper will look better.

The editing process

The first thing that I do when editing my photos is turn them into black and white this makes the contrast between the original phot and the wallpaper that I am going to edit in greter and heps the wallpaper to stand out more if the wallapper is a light colour and may not be seen at first.      I then select the quick selection tool and Choose the area where I want the wallpaper to come through. Then I cut out the area.

Then add a new layer and place in under the original image, this allows the original image to stay on top and the image which is going to be added in to be placed anywhere underneath

This is what the final image will look like

Zine Research

A zine is a small circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via photocopier. Zines are either the product of a single person, or of a very small group and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. Zines are self-published and are usually distributed in a very narrowed channels, this leads to the zines being more valuable and sentimental to the creators compared to larger artists with their official photo books.

Zine where first produced to express opinions of a range of different themes, but the first zine is often traced back to a 1930s effort by the Science Correspondence Club in Chicago. It was called The Comet, and it started a long-lasting trend of sci-fi related zines.

Café Royal Projects are occasional projects that use gallery type spaces for a purpose other than an exhibition. In 2010 the Café Royal Temporary Library invited artists to submit books and editions. The gallery space was presented as a reading room for the public to use, with 800 titles.

Image result for Ernest BaudouxOriginally from France, Ernest Baudoux born 1828 worked in Jersey from 1869 at 11 Craig Street and 51½, 56 and 59 New Street. In 1885 he was joined in business by his son, but two years later they sold out to John Stroud, a young photographer from London, who in turn sold his business, including many of Baudoux’s glass-plate negatives, to Albert Smith.

There are about 1385 photographers of Baudoux’s photographers in the archive, most of these or portraits of jersey families as this was his specialty. But he also could be classified  as a documentary photographer, as his work includes expensive family  houses at the time, and many other events, such as land being reclaimed etc. Many of his portraits exist in two versions, one of them retouched to hide facial blemishes and wrinkles. Baudoux also undertook photographic commissions of clients’ houses and, working with his sons, he photographed views of the island.

Baudoux’s was easily the most prolific Jersey studio. He seems to have drawn his clients mainly from the Jersey born and French speaking population. During his last year of operation he opened a branch establishment in Guernsey.La Société say that of a total of 3298 images attributed to the Albert Smith studio in their archive, they estimate that as many as 500 are in fact by Ernest Baudoux .Baudoux images are very collectable, and frequently appear for sale on on-line auction sites. In addition to the Societe Collection, there are two large collections of Jersey photographs and postcards in South Africa and the United States, to which Jerripedia has access. This has enabled us to build up a substantial gallery of Baudoux images, some of which are shown below, others being located on appropriate subject pages.

The FUTURE OF ST HELIER

My Thoughts On St Helier

I feel that the government has been focusing on developing the finance industry at such a fast pace and forgetting about he needs of the average people who live and work in st helier as over time the amount of things to do especially for young people has become less and less with the removal of the skate park and the forget area which used to attract large amounts of crowds to St Helier, and the beach in st helier most  of the time is un-usable as it is covered in seaweed. As previously fort regent was full of different activities for young people to do and was easy to access by the cable cars that ran from the  center of town.  In my opinion I think that the future of of St Helier should be focused on bring all parts of the town up to the same standard of modernization as that of the fiance industries and that there should be more active centers and places for young people.

MasterPlan

A master plan is a dynamic long-term planning document that provides a conceptual layout to guide future growth and development. Master planning is about making the connection between buildings, social settings, and their surrounding environments. A master plan includes analysis, recommendations, and proposals for a site’s population, economy, housing, transportation, community facilities, and land use. It is based on public input, surveys, planning initiatives, existing development, physical characteristics, and social and economic conditions.

Master planning can assume some or all of these roles:

    • Develop a phasing and implementation schedule and identify priorities for action
    • Act as a framework for regeneration and attract private sector investment.
    • Conceptualize and shape the three-dimensional urban environment.
    • Define public, semiprivate, and private spaces and public amenities.
    • Determine the mix of uses and their physical relationship.
    • Engage the local community and act as builder of consensus.

St Helier has always been the capital of the island and the main area of growth and development and where most of the isaldn money came from, throught the use of the ports and the incoming shiops. But the finance industy has now over taken this and is a rapid expanding area for growth, and is where most of the population comute to and from even though St helier on has around a population of about 33,500, roughly 34.2% of the total population.

My location for the shoot

History of St Helier

Saint Helier is the capital of the twelve parishes of Jersey,  St Helier has a population of about 33,500, roughly 34.2% of the total population of Jersey. The urban area of the parish of St Helier makes up most of the largest town in Jersey, although some of the town area is situated in adjacent St Saviour, with suburbs sprawling into St Lawrence and St Clement. The larger part of St Helier is rural and the town being the mian built up area.

In the second half of the 19th century, hundreds of trucks laden with potatoes and other export produce needed access to the harbour. This prompted a programme of road-widening which swept away many of the ancient buildings of the town centre. Pressure for redevelopment has meant that very few buildings remain in urban St Helier which date to before the 19th century, giving the town primarily a Regency or Victorian character.

My area of focus

For this project I am focusing on two different area of town the Prade/Cheapside area and the I live in the Cheapside area of town ( which is clouded in purple on the map). As i have grown up there i feel that i have a close connection to this area and, by knowing many of the locals in this area for most of my life I think that I will be able to capture a sense of the community in this area. Cheapside is one of the more diverse area of St Helier as most of the Portuguese community in Jersey have small cafes there which everybody is welcome to come too. Also growing up in this area, and exploring the area as a child I know many little  spots that would go unnoticed by the passing eye. But i am also going to focus on the north-side of town as this was the area given to me, as the north of st Helier has been left behind in modern day improvements and developments, so I am going to focus on the aspect that parts of the area have been left to become derelict and have not much use of function. And that is has a master plan to rented to become like other parts of st Helier, i want to capture it in its modern state which, which is stuck in the past I feel that this area has a lack of community as this area is mainly used by people commute in and out of the area as five of the main secondary school are located on this area. So my plan for the north side of town is to focus on Buildings, the current state that they are in, the architecture, how they have been left, and to focus on the sense of community in the cheap side area and the rural aspects that have manged to survive.
