Best class photos edited

I  chose this image due ti the interesting composition of round sections of light, its creates a highlight and direct sense of attention to the highlighted features upon her face. it creates a sense of suspension and also perhpas the development of how one side of her face has a much larger exaggeration of highlights. I edited this image to be in black and white as it would compliment the darker shadows yet still have a large view of standing out.

I chose this image due to the large juxtaposition of red harsh colour I wanted to capture compared to the lighter harsher highlights of the other side of her faces, we also used silver surrounding her in order o cause a further reaction to be seen within the reflection of her face.

I chose this final image as it has a clear demonstration of again harsh dark light compared to a warmer brighter side. I chose red as it compliments the black and all combines to create a tone which create a line directly through the face itself. When editing this image I just wanted to further over exaggerate the red as it creates a vibrancy to the image as a whole.

studio lighting

Why do we use studio lighting?

Studio lighting is used to be able to completely control and create the environment most suitable for the photo you are trying to capture. it can also be used to create a sense of persona and feeling to the image, wether it be a softer fashion imager a strong harsh darker image in order to create ambiance to a candid portraiture.

What is the difference between 1-2-3 point lighting?

Three-point lighting is a standard method used in visual media,By using three separate positions, the photographer can illuminate the shot’s subject , while also controlling  the shading and shadows produced by direct lighting.this allows them to use light their advantage and produce many different images from the same shot.

What is spill lighting?

spill lighting is a light that illuminates a surface behind a certain line, such as a light illuminating a bedroom being seen through the window from outside, it can be used in photography  in order to couture a sense of life and also vibrancy  of lights that also create structure whiten a street.

What is Chiarascuro ?

The treatment of light and shade in drawing and paintingThe underlying principle is that solidity of form is best achieved by the light falling against it. Many famous older artists have used this in their work, that is highly effective to create s sense of place and composition  within a piece.

examples:

Why is light so important?

photography is completely reliant on the availability of light in in which ways the light can be developed to further an image.Usually natural light is available or ambient within the use of it, but we are mostly aware of the surrounding of different types of light, this is due to t how we can use it to exploit and create an aspect which is more creative.

The other types of lights commonly used to enhance  images within  photography are:

intensity of the light:

The intensity of light is simplistic to understand, this is due to the the least amount of creative consideration necessary to achieve a successful photo. Rather than thinking of bright or dim think about the exposure of the photo itself and what effective f a dim shot or a harsh light you wield want to develop. A camera’s exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) are based largely on the overall intensity of the light in the scene. For any given amount of light, there are many combinations of shutter speed, aperture, and ISO that can be used (these are called equivalent exposures). This is done in order to show a development of opposite directions to show a juxtaposition of tonal lighting and the overall controllable effects in the piece. These three camera settings work in opposite directions—meaning that if you change one to be bigger/faster, then you have to change another to be smaller/slower to keep the overall exposure the same.

direction of the light

light has many characteristics of being harsh and light, but also being softer and diffusing instead of being sharp.in addition their is directional quality that can either enhance the subject or perhaps allow a sense of direction to the images, there typically three directions that we look at when discussing the direction of light.such as front lighting does from a source behind the photographer  and is usually a softer light in order to present unwanted shadows.light has a string tendency to flatten out a subject, this font lighting ill illuminate everything but will however offer a highly defined image and defined subject.

temperature of the light and white balance

The temperature of lights allows a warmer more red  tones compared to that of the harsh light that is occasionally seen, this is used in order to show a clear juxtaposition of heat and perhaps suspense whiten the photo compared to that of a fashion photo or one to show strong shadows within the images. white balance is important in order to create a reassurance that everything is intact white and does not differentiate depending on the lighting used.

Using reflectors (silver / gold)

The silver is used in order to reflect the white light and create a strong bounce back onto the face and create an additional sense of lighting. whereas the gold shows a warmer tone and perhaps gives a more pinky skin colour effect and highlight the already existing tones within the image itself.

studio photoshoot in class

Within this shoot I wanted to experiment within  how the use of light can make a complete juxtaposition of colour and develop ways in which light can be harsh and also develop ways in which colour can be applied to a face.

These are purely experimental and not my final pieces and I will further these ideas and execute them in a better presented  manner.

The importance of journalism

standards and ethics within  photojournalism:Thre are unwritten rules about how to ethically approach photojournalism photography , They  cover a wide range of topics such as how a photographer should act while taking pictures, what he or she can and can’t photograph, and whether and how an image can be altered in the darkroom or on the computer. This ethical framework evolved over time, influenced by such things as technological capability and community values; the voice of the photographer  isn’t to make an image and scenario on that does not exist but purely to teach people they ave a choice of what their cations contribute to  build important skills like researching, writing, interviewing and thinking critically.they have to be able to capture the image without improbity or effecting the person negatively and or making them feel like lesser of a personn as a flair in any sense of patronising.

The single shot:this is a highly powerful image which has a large impact in order to show a sense of fear within the society and how they themselves feel powerless to the occurring events surrounding themselves. the image conveys a clear raw image of oppression and a corrupt government patriarchal society. It also perhaps shows a sense of prejudice within the time and how the man is so afraid but that does not overcome the other mans hand of power.

the picture story based  is done in order to reenact a significant occsournace without mediation in order o create a significance impact to the social or government in order to use the images as a preventative for further conflicts. It is effective as a picture speaks a thousands words and so an accurate visitation is appropriate to express the struggles ins his these people my be facing. In other cases it also allows people to see how other people live and asa. historical factor and to see a gradual change. It is said that “The primary purpose of journalism is to provide citizens with the information they need to be free and self-governing,” It is an informative information necessary for citizens and a decider for themselves and not by the more powerful governing institutions.

A comparison of work to William Klein and Diane Arbus

William kelin

William Klein was born in American but a French photographer and filmmaker was less well known for his ironic approach to both mediums, his extensive use of unusual photographic techniques in the context of photojournalism  and fashion photography ranked 25th on Professional Photographer‘s list of 100 most influential photographers.h has many awards and exhibitions surrounding his work, soon after being a painter he started off within his photography journey soon achieving  widespread fame as a fashion photographer  for vogue and for his photo essay  on various cities.

Because of this he was able to make many feature length films, and numerous of short and feature length documentaries advertising his work and allowing the public to see and be influenced by what he has achieved. Again he started off within photojournalism and street photography in new York much like many other famous photographers,His work was soon viewed to be considered revolutionary for its “ambivalent and ironic approach to the world of fashion”, its “uncompromising rejection of the then prevailing rules of photography”and for his extensive use of wide angles  and telephoto lenses, natural lighting and motion blur.

He was said by the New York times to had been considered one among the fathers of the streets and a mixture of compliments that classifies a man who is hardly classy,Or Perhaps this represents him in quite a figurative manner but it still successful shows how people within New York needed his influence and guidance in order to make  an important  for society and that he was able to capture both the humor and the reality within New York at the time.  the world of fashion would become the subject and inspiration for many of His works ad inspire inspirations of clothing evolution and a new meaning of beauty and womanly presentation. Lastly his street would would print a more violent and also exploit different religions and groups within America ta the time which was important to allow news programs to see his work.

what I like about his works that people were shown in such a ironic and unexpected light, people would be holding a gun with a face that implies that they are joking, or people in uncomfortable scenarios being laid-back and smiling while enraptured in a city more dull than themselves. he was able to capture the people within the city who would otherwise be ignored.

This is my favorite piece of his won work because it allows again a sense of youth and joy with is contradictory compared to that of the elderly people surrounding herself. It shows a women having a. sense of freedom and not wearing much clothing but she is not exploited for her sexuality but shown for reasons of her spirit and how this is what keeps cities alive. Again something more solemn is occurring in the background but the is ignored but to the irony of her celebration.

His work overall is very different to That of the previous artists as it portrays a more light hearted representation  on suffering and troubles within the world and surrounding New York city, his photographers are perhaps less natural but sill capture a well enraptured essence of the people and their lives.

Diane Arbus

Was an American photographer  well known for photographs of marginalized people such as dwarfs, giants, transgender people, nudists and finally circus from former. She again did this in order to represent the minority and portray a sense of  normality by ways in which they look and not general populace who would consider them as  ugly or surreal. Her work has been described as consisting of formal manipulation characterized by blatant sensationalism, this means that her work has most of the interests surrounding the subject of the charter and is taken in a formal manner, this allows a direct eye line and conceptual though go the person and their story and not allowing others to be influenced by herself.

sadly Arbus committed suicide and so presented a fictional version of her life story, within her last areas of photography .This was possibly due to her affair to a married a man who was never going to marry herself and only pushed her harder frequently throughout her work. She was married to another Jewish man such as herself Arbus was insulated from the effects of the great depression while growing up in the 1930s . Her father became a painter after retiring from Russek’s; her younger sister would become a sculptor and designer;so the majority of her family become intrigued in everything surrounding the creative arts and influence.

Diane started her own photography   business and  would come up with the concepts for their shoots and then take care of the models. She grew dissatisfied within this role, a role even her husband thought was “demeaning.”They contributed to  glamour, seventeen, vogue,Harper bazaar, and other magazines even though “they both hated the fashion world”. Despite over 200 pages of their fashion editorial in Glamour, and over 80 pages in Vogue, the Arbuses’ fashion photography has been described as of “middling quality’ due to her gradually  hate and enforcement of photography  she become even less inclined to choose to take a shoot and no longer wanted to develop her work and she grew older and more depressed.

what I like about her work: I like how formally and clearly she captures people. there is no doubt what they are feeling but only why,it allows question which you can answer yourself by looking further into the image itself, and also due to all the interesting people,it allows a more intriguing view of the society in which she was in. Her images also allow an interesting composition to enhance the interesting subject to which she is capturing.

This is my favorite from this artist, this is due to interesting subject of a transgender man which again shows her representing the majority in order to allow a sense of normality to the society in which they are in.The makeup again furthers the image of femininity but that is contradicted within the darker tonal background suggesting more harsh underlining themes. You can also see how they are smoking, which bring a somewhat relevance to the time and possibly creates a sense of relation to the public and they all act the same but have different appearances.

Compared to the previous artist,She is a lot more formal within only concentrating on the face itself and not a lot of movement, this allows a  straight forward proposition of her these also allow a sense  of irony to show a more extravagant type of people within the society.

Henri Cartier – Bresson and The Decisive Moment

Henri Cartier is a street photographer,And was also a French humanist photograph and was soon considered a master of candid photography He started off within using 35mm  film. He pioneered the genre of street photography, and viewed photography as capturing a decisive moment. His work has influenced many photographer

He was born in France the youngest of 5,and was the son of a well known textiles manufacturer. His parents supported him financially so Henri could pursue photography more freely than his contemporaries. Henri also sketched. he also highly enjoyed painting as this inspired him for many of his works throughout  While also being highly involved in photojournalism and painting he was inspired as surrealist photographers such as Lhote’s “rule-laden” approach to art. While traveling around the world more he become inspired by different forms of art and artists and also even the people and environment that he was surrounded within. He was also captured by German soldiers which also inspired lots of his work within the suffering and journalism of war in which he was enraptured.

The Decisive Moment

This is a book in which the photographer wrote, whose English-language edition was titled The Decisive Moment. It included a portfolio of 126 of his photos from the East and the West. The book’s cover was drawn by Henri Matisse  For his 4,500-word philosophical preface. Within the book he is seen saying ‘ simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as of a precise organization of forms which give that event its proper expression.”

Analysis of this image:

I chose this image due to the the conceptual thoughts and also a clear representation of the artists own views upon war and suffering. There is a slight struggle i which to see weather the children are playing within the corruption of war and a socialist generation gap or another way to say how they are fighting and there is a clear demonstration of their won suffering.I Think the composition to the piece is highly interesting as it presents a clear direct line of view but is a symbol of war and a possible explosion that has occurred. It almost allows an insight into children’s life which is ironic how children are meant to be looked after and how the view into their environment is through a war ground. The straight line of eye is also used to exaggerate how to see this environment it is not heard and that mediation is used to cover what people not found within the western world are going through. It proposes many ideas which too would be interesting to use within my own work and how to document different unexpected areas in which i live that people pretend to be ignorant towards.

His contribution to MAGNUM magazine,Magnum is a website which allows many photographers to upload their images and show a sense of who they are,but mostly surrounding that of photojournalism. Many photos in which was inspired by people in his habitat and where he lived at the time.He also occasionally uploads images of his artwork onto this website which are effective and look very much as an inspiration to his photo inspired work.

To me his work is highly effective in ways of conveying a story within a relevance of the modern and earlier times within history. He inspires others and achieves many successful images which emote a sense of change or purely just expose everyone different environmental lives.

Photojournalism

Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism which is surrounding the collection, editing and also and presentation of a public broadcast,This is done to  employ images in order to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism. The objective of the photos is to be timeless, create a narrative and lastly create an objectivity and a conceptual though of why this image is of an importance. they need to be able to help communities and have an ability to connect with other people and be a sense of informative knowledgeable events.

photojournalism is very close to environmental portraiture and also candid photography. This is an ability to access information about important stories and a documentation of events surrounding your environment. This photography makes rigid ethical framework which demands that the work be both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms.

photojournalism started off by being inspired by war photography in order to create an accurate illusion of war and so represent to to others the suffering and potential to prevent these wars from occurring.Due to this there was a large expansion of photography which soon inspired the Golden age: This is often considered to be roughly the 1930s through the 1950s. It was made possible by the development of the compact commercial  camera in 1925 and so journalist true flexibility in taking pictures.

To me photojournalism is all about telling a story that emphasis a sense of importance and impact into the world,It needs to bring a message of importance and have a relevance to the audience and the time to which it was taken.

Mary Ellen Mark

Is a well known street photographer,Her work is used in order to demonstrate a side of reality that is presented as the minority,so using her camera as a mode of inablment to show these people.

Her work can be descried as old and new,it is a modernization of historic journalism within her work but also a more outrageous twist to which she is accustomed.  Mary Ellen has been photographing on the streets of New York City since before she even lived in New York City—and she continues to.  The energy and variety of New York has always inspired Mary Ellen.  Her work is also seen within experimenting in different modes such as Polaroids or more set up celebrity shoots. Although she only shoots people who have somewhat political power or a message of leadership within their own work.

Before her fame as a photographer, In 1983 Mary Ellen met Tiny, a 13-year-old girl working as a prostitute on the streets of Seattle. This was the inspiration for her book and commentary that inspired her work for a further 30 more years. This demonstrates how her work was based off a story of people and some occasions this could be based upon suffering or a miscarriage of life that she wanted to change by exposing to the world.

Mary Ellen taught photography workshops for over 30 years.she discusses the main topics that she would distill in her workshops using examples of her work and also photographs by some of her students. Her work was always graphic and had a suitable message behind every each piece. Her work shows a continuous  explotment of different people, races and social classes within america at the time. As clearly seen all of her images are real and captured from inspiration within the streets.

to me her work is a clear exaggeration of the issues at the time and how it was important to exploit the minority and the issues living among everyone in new York. To me her work expresses and demonstrates Americas development and need for change within people. Each of her photos exploit a different conceptual concept of people within NYC .

My favorite image is seen below:

I like this image due to all the possible reasons behind as to why it was taken. this image has an interesting  angle and composition to show a small youthful girl leaning on a masked persons shoulder, perhaps this is done to show how even the innocent are reliant upon masked and faked laws that portray a sense that they are helping and efficient but are nothing but the differ.
