collage edit of face inspired by second shoot

For this collage piece  it wad inspired by my second artsit,I took many profile shots at different angles and edited them all to be darker tonally, then I made a plan and decided upon the sizing and angles at which I wanted the images to be cut up,lastly I positioned the imagine in order to create a fragmented segmented appearance of a face.

original images:

I think this image is unique because I also cut the images in rounded lines in order to indicated an almost 3d effect, addtionally, this shows that is it also the shape of a human head and demonstrates the inspired artist pieces of the young boys 3d body.

landscape sea shoot development, third artist:Tony Hertz

Original inspiration

For my third artists I wanted to expand my ideas further from the behavior of people and  focus upon the behavior of nature and a pathetic flallsey effect and how nature has emotions and more power over humans.I want to portray a more free sense of nature and the environment not being held back by man made creations. I was originally inspired by the following images:I also want to focus on the conventional laws of how nature and how it is seen to behave and how we cannot actually predict its actions and its behaviour is a clear opposition to the lack of identity that people continuously show.

Third artists:Tony Hertz

He’s been recognized with top awards for his landscape photographs. His work has been published widely, including Outdoor Photographer Magazine, Photographer’s Forum, Silvershotz and Black and White Magazines. Tony has over 35 years of professional photography experience with 10 years of it as a daily newspaper photographer. While working as a photojournalist it helped refine his compositional instincts. Then he turned to focus mainly on landscape and nature subjects for personal and fine art photography work.  he become interested within photography in his early years of childhood when fining a box camera. At age 10 he was drawn to LIFE magazine and any book or tabloid that contained photos which in turn inspired him on his creative adventure. in 1971 he soon enrolled in a  photography class in San Bernardino Valley College.Afterwards he earns a liberal art degree and continued to teach photography.,while also learning the composition and techniques of the newspaper photographs. he soon became ;photojournalist;list of the year’ gaining skills of editing images and communicating within editors and photographers on story ideas and preventions. in the mid 1980’s he started to refine his compositional instincts and technically hone his photography skills. More importantly, it brought himself  into many situations and experiences with interesting people and events that shaped me professionally and personally.

I Chose this work due to the way the phototherapy divides his time equally shooting and then editing his work and additionally teaching traditional film photography and digital photography. within his work he has such diverse techniques and methods in order to capture the different atmospheres within landscapes and different methods in which to present nature and water, some of his work:

image anyslsis:

critical anyslsis:I Was inspired by this image as it presents a softer feel to nature and a long shutter speed in order to capture a movement of the water,This questions the conventions of the expectation of nature and the  presentation of how it works and can be presented.for my shoot I can develop the behaviour of nature demonstrating more stormy isolated weather as seen before and more romantisced nature to symbolises a behaviour we present and don’t show to people, furthermore the abstract sense and unpredictability that nature symbolises demonstrates the power nature has over people and how its strength can change the way people act and behave.

midori harima shoot :shoot 2

This shoot again was more abstract and focuses on more surreal aspects in the way their identity is pretested. I wanted to use aspects of mirrors and also collage to show a representation of  altered reality and identity to who someone is and who makes us who we are. This is also done in order to cover their identity with a different representation of themselves and how human behavior changes and is altered depending on the circumstances in which they are surrounded.I took this shoot in a room which the lighting was easy to control, due to the environment not being of high relevance but the main concentration upon collage and editing.

I have five main ideas for this shoot, collage, covering of identity, mirroring and using a doll to indicate a person beauty and false sense of covered identity and a lack of their real behaviour.

contact sheet:

edits:

for the edits I used photoshop, with the addition or real life positioning with paper in order to indicate an effects of ripping off skin and covering of identity, addtionally I did many edits focusing upon mirroring and forming surrealism illusions within how a face is formed and how we have different sides and values to ourselves which can be viewed differently by different people. for my next experimentation within this shoot I will do a collage and from an abstract afce with the remaining images.

within these four images I repeated and flipped the images and edited the angles to create an altered reality to the positioning of her face.I originally did this by the lighting technique and blocking out light on half of her face originally.

to edit this image I originally placed a piece f paper in order to introduce the angle and size of the effect that I would wants layered the image and used a lasso tool to segment the part of the skin I want to repeated and then shaped it to the size of the paper, removing access. lastly I used the smudge tool to allow a movement of the skin coming off and a pulling effect.

within this idea I wanted to develop more on human behaviour and emotion and what we show and cover as a secret to our identity, this tracks emotions to which people feel but will not consciously present to society.

best images and image analysis:

this is my favourite image as it uses many techniques of half lighting, and a mirror in order to recreate a face in a altered angle,I then repeated the image and positioned the faces to be facing each other to portray a whole face and then tonally edited the piece itself.Overall it symbolises a question of attitude and mystery to what a person thinks and presents through their behaviour to others, there is a sense of suspension of altered personalities to which are fake and not ourselves.

second artist: midori harima and shoot ideas

These are some examples in which I was inspired(separate from the artists work):

I was fascinated with the distortion within people due to either a self inflicting issue reflected onto themselves to mirror an emotion, this would come under their own personal secret and view of themselves and the continuous convention of people being subjected to portray a certain aspect of themselves to others. This would come under a surrealistic aspect and also possibly from using mirrors and or collage as well as Photoshop techniques within the image.

Second artist:Midori Harima

Harima relocated to the United States in 2001, and currently maintains a studio in New York. She is known for her technique of creating hollow paper sculptures from archival paper, onto which she has pasted photocopied images from magazines, newspapers, and other conventional media. By gathering and linking together fragments of the visual information that inundates today’s society, and thereby raising issues that cannot be represented by other means, her work leads to the discovery of intuitive beauty for which her practice is highly acclaimed.During her more recent work she links her ambition to projects featuring democracy and new inspiration from daily life such as every daily consummations and considering how this effects the democracy and as a whole within society.

why I chose her work:

I was originally inspired by the somewhat gruesome observations of identity and the conventions that we are not who we present others that we are, I was also interested wihtinn the collage and inventive way in which the faces were formed or even futher experimented wihtin using dolls and a reflection of behaviour and almost a code of a set way in which we have to behavouir and also look all the time. Harima relates sucessfully to this as her work shows a sense of emotion of a 3d image but onto a face stuture, bringing alive something that does not exist, and an emotion and we deem relastic to the surrounding society.

Favourite image analysis:

This image holds many connotations of being removed  in many aspects, which creates an eerie sense due to the lack of colour and loss of humanness wihtin the image itself, it possess many characteristics to which a human should obtain but are lacking, such as movement and an expression but most importantly the image of the face is added over the head so the proportions are a way to present the image .It possesses many questions and fits into secrets codes and conventions as their is such a lack of colour and being it possess so much mystery wihtin the relationship of the body and the image form of the head itself,It once again fits into a theme of isolation and a confromative act of behaviour in which we have to comfort to as a code and how the face is smiling but is clearly a fake emotion. This could also be produced by collage seen above by my unrelated originally inspired images which led me to this artist. There is a clear sense of insecurity  projected from herself onto her work and once gain highlights a false sense of security whitin a child being not being real.

inspiration from her work:

what I can take from her work is the way in which she forms a structure in order to demonstrate a false emotion and a consistent juxtaposition of trying to demonstrate a positive emotion. This links to my first artists as it constitutes for an act of behaviour and false sense of self.

Connie imboden shoot

For The shoot I decided I would go to a beach and take the images submerged within the water in order to produce the effects of finding a truth or a identity to ourselves that we don’t present to others,A complex human behavior and searching for an identity. I went to a local beach and stood over my subject and took the images creating the lighting how I wanted, I wanted to also take image in which I could edit together and form interesting dynamic scenarios as if she is escaping the water.I wanted to also possibly catch reflections of frees and how it develops and creates a from and suture to the water and creating a mystery to where she is and a story to how and why she is there.

Edits and editing:

This image is one of my best due to the movement of the water can be seen but still the main focus is on the face which is surrounded by the water itself, it presents no emotion and lack of feeling throughout the images decided to to edit it complete black and white so it still has a prelatic element. Although it is not all completely in focus it still presents my themes of human behaviour and additionally has a string relation to that of my artist.

To edit my images I wanted to lower the saturation and higher the contrast in order to exaggerate the tonal sections to the image,These edits are more successful due to the larger focus on being submerged by water and also they show my themes of mystery to why she is there and submerging her emotions and human behaviour so she has a loss of identity.Additionally there are also strong conventions of the power of nature throughout these images and the strength the water has to effect her emotional behaviour.

I once again overlapped images to form more textualised background of the sea and or to cover my subject by a wave, addtionally I also edited the images to form a distortion and present a cover of herself and repetition of her being.

Unedited images:

Within the last thee images they are a lot more bare and the figurative formation and place of the body is what shows the themes of how we behave depending on what position we are put in,or the abstract way in which our mind conventionally works.

ethics of photography within documentary, journalism and surrealism

There are many codes and conventions within the boundaries of documentary photography and photojournalism, they are in place in order to accurately represent the areas and the people and not culturally mimic and mis-inform an audience due to editing or framing causing mediation and unreliability to the images themselves.

1)representation; is showing the truth and reality and not portraying a misrepresentation of a scenario, this has such great importance in order to  promote the reality of a situation and not a tabloid setting, This in turn looses the impact and relevance of the image, and the trust and  believable aspect within the audience receiving the image from the photographer. Throughout my new stage of work I am going to be focusing upon photo journalism and surrealism.I have chosen this due to the interesting effects in which surrealism carries, how it possess underwired methods to portray my themes of secrets codes and conventions and how I am able to be much more expressive and carry many more unique character traits throughout my work.I am able to symbolize dynamic shapes and an interesting concept of human behavior in order to symbolize the combination of surrealistic and highly conceptual images to symbolize a feeling of secrecy and search for identity between people. However within photojournalism I could also capture a development of everyday people and a feeling their own story and within their family,I can  focus on how a group of people work together and how their behavior effects each other and the way in which they act as a whole community,so sharing the themes I am using in my surrealism shoots also carried throughout photojournalism.

analysis of short film

This slow movie was Made by Deren with her husband, cinematographer Alexander Hammid, Meshes of the Afternoon established the independent avant-garde movement in film in the United States, which is known as the New American Cinema. It directly inspired early works by Kenneth Anger, Stan Brakhage, and other major experimental filmmakers. Beautifully shot by Hammid, a leading documentary filmmaker and cameraman in Europe (where he used the surname Hackenschmied) before he moved to New York, the film makes new and startling use of such standard cinematic devices as montage editing and matte shots.

Technical visual conceptual:

This short film was a non narrative piece and an exmaple of ‘trance film’ towards the end of the film there were continuous jump cuts with a birds eye view presenting a power over the protagonist women herself, furthermore theses cuts created a repetition in order to from the narrative moving from the end and back to the beginning of the narrative.in which a protagonist appears in a dreamlike state, and where the camera conveys his or her subjective focus. This was done in order to connote a sense of death and fear within the women symbolized through the black figure. The figure itself has an  interesting concept to it as it had a strong resemblance to that of a symbolic figure of death or the grim reaper which is attuned to her unconscious mind and caught in a web of dream events that spill over into reality.Additionally the mirror portrays a loss of identity and also a reflection of the women’s biggest fear being seen within herself, this also successful combines secrets codes and conventions as it reflects an act of behavior and a conventional secret she is hiding from herself and perhaps.Furthermore you can see the womens struggle and an atmophere of danger when she was coming up the stairs due ot the cameras wuick turning and editing in order to express an abrupt movement .Historically this film was made in the early 1940’s so at the time was innovative and a ispired many film makers with the advancement of editing and special effects,

There are also continuous  themes of surrealism which is an avant grade movement in art and literature and was created from the potential of unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. surrealistic cinema is a modernist approach and criticism,

first artist:Connie imboden photographer and shoot plan

Originally inspired images by artist

First artist study: Connie imboden photographer

Imboden is an american photographer who  focuses on the movement and formation of the natural body surfaced within reflections in water and mirrored repetitive lines. Her work can be viewed in many collections including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Over many years her work has become very extensive across many galleries demonstrating many of her works. she has a successful book titled ‘out of darkness’  and won ‘one of the most beautiful books in the world’ award. He work describes a raw seduction of flesh, although her recent work is presenting the insights of reflections within her work,Throughout the years, Imboden has continued to teach and inspire colleagues and students alike in her quest to push the photographic medium to its highest level.

why I chose her work

The artists work connotes strongly to themes of isolation and also symbolizes a self endangerment which would be interesting to capture within an image.I also chose her work due to the dynamic shape and forming of bodies and the ways in which they move to demonstrate informative shapes, furthermore there is a combination of almost journalism of poeple and how they act, tracing and recording their behaviour, this is through abstract forming of bodies and moevemnt of bodily stature throughout her work, addtionally it also shows how we as humans are always trying to find something more about ourselves and the refusal as a society we have to secrets and a need to know and search for more information.

I also think the water is very effective in her work as it can symbolise a sense of weight and freedom but also the juxtaposition of isolation for others and a surrounding embodiment of nothing.

images analysis

within this work their is a clear fine art and conceptual element of surrealism within her photography,it allows a creative portrayal of reflection and question and links to her conventions of how poeple should behave and be prensted in to people ,this image above to me symbolizes a man exploring and trying to find himself and held secrets as the water is used to symbolise an isoltion form others. My favourite aspect of this image is the total divsion of colour and also framing of the face itself,it portrays an obvious movement and exploration of who we are or should be.The tones also change in order to connote a covered issue or perhaps an altered reality and a sense of mystery within the image once again questioning a secret and a search for something more and conflicting within the exceptions of codes that he is meant to oblige towards.

Ethically yes this image is clearly photoshopped and not a person going into water or even near it at all but does still successful demonstrate a separate side to ourselves that is not who we are or a search for a true identity not plagued  with secrets and mystery to who we are or should act.

Mindmap of ideas / concept + context

concept:

My concept for my project is to  present human behavior, emotion and loss of identity through the development of secrets, codes and conventions. This will be done by capturing people in different scenarios where they are not themselves and portraying a false sense of self to the people surrounding them. Additionally this can be done by how people act different due to their scenario.

This leads me into the behavior of nature as it is surrounding people, and how nature has power of people and is completely unreliable. A combination of nature and human behavior will be seen in one of my shoots and how when forming the unreliability of nature and the hidden secrets of a person, loss of  identity is formed, and a submerged feeling of emotion.

Additionally many  editing techniques will be used to heighten my themes, such as collage to  present many different aspects and sides to a person is formed together to build up their whole identity, this conforms to the conventions of what makes us human and how we have hidden secrets and aspects to ourselves that we do not show others. Also fitting within this these mirrors are illusions  that will used to show two sides to a person and the codes being broken and how people copy and take parts of ourselves and us them as their own identity.

overall I think I have successful contextualized my themes of human behavior throughout my work and i know what i want to do to succeed within hitting the specific terminology while still accessing the conventions of human behavior.

secrets codes and conventions

codes: codes is used to symbolize five separate categories consisting of:numbers, letters, symbols, technology and human behaviour. It demonstrates an expectation of a conformative systems through either body language or a reflection of a behaviour. It presents a normal repetitive behavior as it is set as a code. The oppostional behavior would be presented through the real concept of our self and not a set behavior or a reflection of ignorance surrounding knowledge or technology.

conventions is used to symbolize a held idea that we hold important weather it be a repetitive idea of our behavior that is considered acceptable or a way in which something is done.the juxtaposing idea to this would be a lack of formation and not conforming within a socially held idea to be important. This could be seen within isolation or segregation.

secrets: This consists of unknowingess or perhaps a reflection of loss of identity, not knowing or being known.it be be a covered secret and presents a private issue within a person.however it could be changed to explores a  found knowing of themselves to be told and seen a change within themselves to others
