This coloured landscape photograph is of a pink building called the La Muralla Roja. This photography has clearly only been taken with natural lighting as you can see the multiple shadows that have been created from the abstract building. There is a strong contrast in this image between the pink building and the pale blue sky. The use of this strong contrast really allows the building to project its abstract shapes. Furthermore, the green tree creates a sense of juxtaposition as it also creates a strong contrast between the man made structure and the natural structure within this image. This is because there is very little natural structures compared to the large amount of man made structures. The multiple shapes within this building creates a sense of depth as it create an almost maze feeling to the image as you could imagine getting lost among all the sharp and abstract shapes. Overall, the way Nick has captured this abstract image allows the viewers to visualise it in such a way which results in this image being very aesthetically pleasing to look at.
Formalism is the study of art by analyzing and comparing form and style the way objects are made and their purely visual aspects. In painting, formalism emphasizes elements such as color, line, shape, texture, and other perceptual aspects rather than iconography or the historical and social context.

Minimalism
Minimalism is a style used by many 20th Century artists, using a very minimum amount of elements which consist of: color, shape, line and texture. Within the art world it is considered an extremely subjective concept, leaving interpretation and meaning up to the viewers perception of the work.
Psycho-geography is an exploration of urban environments that emphasises a playful movement. It has links to the situation international. Psychogeography was defined in 1955 by Guy Debord as “the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behavior of individuals. Another definition is “a whole toy box full of playful, inventive strategies for exploring cities. It is just about anything that takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into a new awareness of the urban landscape.

Boyle Family is a group of collaborative artists based in London. Mark Boyle and Joan Hills met in Harrogate, Yorkshire in 1957. Joan studied art and architecture as well as bringing up her first son Cameron whilst running her own business. Mark was in the army writing poetry. Wherever Mark and Joan lived became their studio. After a period of working separately on visual art pieces, they moved into a collaboration whilst also agreeing that art should not exclude anything as a potential subject. Originally the work went under Mark Boyle’s name, largely because Mark and Joan were more concerned with making their work than attempting to fight the stereotype that artists were solo and usually male. Labels never mattered to them. It was the work that was important, not their image or personal recognition.
Nicholas Nixon is known for the simplicity and intimacy of his black and white large format photographs. Nixon has photographed porch life in the rural south, schools in and around Boston, cityscapes, sick and dying people, the closeness of couples, and the ongoing annual portrait of his wife, Bebe, and her three sisters. Recording his subjects close and with meticulous detail, he facilitates an emotional connection between the viewer and the subject.
The body of work explores the self in physical and psychological proximity to the urban landscape. In 2017, Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid opened a comprehensive survey of the artist’s work to date, accompanied by a catalogue illustrating over 200 images.
Photo analysis
Natural lighting was clearly used to capture this photograph due to the natural tones and contrast in the photograph. The use of natural lighting allows the photo to project a sense of realism which helps allow the audience to feel as if they can connect with the photo. This is shown within this photograph as it has been displayed in black and white which makes the photo seem more surreal and creates a sense of mystery and creates a more dramatic image. The use of black and white helps bring out the levels in this image from the masses of cars on the highway and the heights of the buildings. This photo shows the advancement of civilization and man made structures which is conveyed by how hectic and lively this image looks due to the mass numbers of buildings and how full the roads are. This shows how the New Topographic movement was a reaction to Romanticism just from the use of the juxtaposition within this image such as; the man made features throughout the whole image and the natural aspects within the image such as the trees among the buildings . This photograph is a clear message to reflect how man made structures are taking over society and dominating these natural areas. This is clearly supported by the fact that the natural features are hidden away in the image and are not the main features of the image like they would be within romanticism photography.
The New Topographics was an exhibition in 1975 called ‘Man Altered Landscape’ that started a major shift from which landscapes were taken of traditional pictures of romanticized landscapes of banal and stark industrial landscapes of monotonous scenes, that never had a second glance. These images act like the acceptance of a world changing by man and they present the beauty and aesthetic of dull, ugly and boring structures, scenes and streets. Furthermore, there were a group of influential photographers in the practice of landscape photography around the world who were know as The New Topographics group. (Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher were part of this group.) The new topographics signifies a reaction to the growing unease of the natural landscape being eroded by industrial development and the spread of cities.

Ansel Adams born in February 1902 was a photographer and environmentalist. Ansel was born in San Francisco, California. He took black-and-white landscape photographs of the American west, especially Yosemite National Park, which have been largely reproduced and used on calendars, posters and all over the internet.
Ansel Adams and Fred Archer where two mens who developed the Zone system as a way to control proper exposure and to alter the contrast of the final print. He was able to create a sense of simplicity and depth within his images which helped characterise his photographs. He mainly used large-format cameras because of the size of film he used with these cameras contributed to the clearness of his prints.

This photograph appears to have been taken with only natural light. Wide angle lenses are used to capture landscape photos, which is likely what would have been used to create this image. This image has a large tonal range, were the foreground and parts of clouds are made to look very dark and sinister on the tops of the mountains, coated in snow. This image has a large depth of field as the closest parts of the image are sharp and in focus as well as the furthest points such as the clouds. A fast shutter speed would have been used to capture this image because we can see there is no motion blur within the river or the clouds. There is little use of rule of thirds used because it is clear that he is trying to show off natural and making the whole image the main subject and allowing the whole picture to show of natures beauty rather than a specific area in the photograph. I think Adams was trying to influence the idea that the environment is not something that needs to be changed and altered.
Throughout the 1800s the romantic movement was the most popular form of landscapes that were painted early on. However, the style is brought back in the 21st century with photographers recreating similar images. The first real romantic landscapes were seen in the period when artists, poets and writers were more focused on nature and the power of it more than any history, religion or portraiture happening in that time. The period was characterized mostly by emphasis of emotion as well as nature. At the time, the industrial revolution was emerging and romanticism was a fresh and almost reminiscent way of thinking that was not so focused on the technologies and future. It is also characterized by a heightened interest in nature, emphasis on the individual’s expression of emotion and imagination and the departure from the attitudes and forms of classicism.

Panoramic photography is a technique used in photography, using equipment that captures images with horizontally widened fields of view. Also know as wide format photography. The term has also been applied to a photograph that is cropped to a relatively wide aspect ratio.
However there is no actual division between wide angle and panoramic photography, wide-angle normally refers to a type of lens, but using this lens doesn’t always create a panorama. A panoramic view generally means it has an aspect ratio of 2:1 or larger, the image being at least twice as wide as it is high. The final images usually take the form of a wide strip. Some panoramic images have aspect ratios of 4:1 and sometimes 10:1, covering fields of view of up to 360 degrees. Both the aspect ratio and coverage of field are important factors in defining a true panoramic image.
