For my final prints I decided to select 6 of my strongest pairs of images, 12 images in total, and display them in sets of two mounted on black and then three sets mounted on white, I felt that this was the best way to display my images as it was simple and each set was divided yet the black made them stand out and created a frame around each set of two.

Evaluation of final book layout
Final Book Layout

Initial page spreads
These are three of my first draft page spreads for my book design. I have decided to pick a landscape book for this project as I feel that it is what best fits my images and will help my get the best result as all my images are landscape. I then started my book design by picking one initial image on the first page and then started pairing photos together by keeping in mind things such as shapes, colours and objects. I also plan to incorporate some double page spreads where the left page is blank and only the right page has a photo to create a break within the structure of the book which will insure that the design does not become cluttered and not too much of a continuous pattern.
This equals that
By Jason Fulford & Tamara Shopsin
As research for inspiration for the design and layout of my own photobook I have looked at and analysed the book “This equals that” by Jason Fulford and Tamara Shopsin, the book consists of a series of page spreads each with two images next to each-other which relate to each-other through various things such as shapes, colours or composition. The purpose of the book is for people to find conceptual associations between the images and to discover how one image leads to another. Through a simple narrative and rhythmic sequence of photographs, the book raises multiple meanings, making the experience of reading the book interactive. Each spread presents a new relationship that changes and shifts as the book unfolds, with the last picture relating again to the first, forming a circle. This is something that I have taken in mind when considering the layout of my own book, when creating my design I kept in mind the relationship between each photo through shapes colour and composition, whether it be the photo on the other side of the page or on the next set of pages.
Shoot 3
B&W edits
I decided to experiment with some black and white edits with some of the photos from my first shoots, I was inspired by Walker Evans series of black and white subway images and I wanted to see how editing by images in black and white would manipulate them and create a different overall atmosphere within the images. I also thought that pairing my own photos in black and white with some of the coloured postcards from the photo archive could create an interesting juxtaposition.
Archive postcards
These are a series of postcards from the Societe Jersiaise photo archive that show the seaside and popular locations from the past that must have been printed to promote jersey tourism, I intend to use some of these postcards within my book with some of my own photos of popular tourist attractions such as the seaside.
Shoot 2
For my second shoot I decided to go out in slightly different weather conditions, on this day it was quite sunny which meant that the lighting in the photos was different and that activities going on outside created some more interesting things to photograph, because of the good weather I also was able to go on an open top bus which was particularly useful to get better angles and slightly clearer views of the things going on outside of the bus. For this shoot I went out for a few hours and took 4 bus trips to try and take photos of things happening in various areas. Below are a selection of what I think are some of my strongest images from the shoot unedited, overall I am pleased with how the shoot turned out and how I have succeeded to create some images slightly different to my first shoot, for some of my next shoots I plan to take the bus to more different areas but also to create some images earlier in the morning and later in the day and night so that and can have a final outcome with a progression of images where the lighting changes from morning to evening.
Shoot 1
For my first shoot I decided to take a double decker bus on the route that goes to the airport and back into town, my idea was that with a double decker I could manage to get some perspectives of things that you can’t get on a normal bus, the height that you are sat on the double decker creates a perspective that you are an onlooker sort of spying on the people around you, rather than a member of the crowd. Below are 20 of what I think are my most successful images from the shoot unedited. On the day that I did this shoot it was raining and therefor it was difficult to achieve a completely clear image out of the bus window, but I do like the effect that the blurry windows and water droplets give to some of the images. For my next shoot though I will try and take into consideration the weather conditions when I do the shoot so that I can get a variety of images with different lighting to create different atmospheres.
