ESA // Photoshoot Plan

Produce a detailed plan of 3 shoots for each idea in your specification that you are intending to do.

Photoshoot One

For my first photo shoot, I am going to visit the beaches along the coasts of Jersey, taking photographs at low and high tide.

The areas I am going to be visiting are:

  • Le Braye
  • Le Port
  • Plémont Beach
  • l’Etach

For this photo shoot, I am going to be taking inspiration from Michael Marten and his images that show the ebbs and flows of the tide.

Photoshoot Two

For my second photo shoot, I am going to visit l’Etach and take images throughout the day revisiting every hour, starting from low tide (@ 1100hrs) to high tide (@ 1700hrs). After this photo shoot, I should have 7 final images, which I can then present as a moving image or gif, as well as a grid of images.

For this photo shoot, I am going to be taking inspiration from Eadward Muybridge and his series of images that he produced to show that all of a horse’s hooves come off of the ground at the same time at some point whilst they are galloping.

Photoshoot Three

For my third photoshoot I am going to take photographs at the Watersplash and I am going to take images to capture the movement of the water, so I will set up in one place and take constant photographs of this one area.

  1. Overall, you need to produce more work!

Make sure you complete draft blog posts and publish work as it develops

You need to improve the way you do an artists references. Follow these steps

    1. Research and analyse the work of at least 1 or two photographers/ artists.

    For example: look up

Jem Southam and his coastal studies on cliff erosion
Marc Wilson and his Last Stand book and project

Maybe also do a blog post on contextual studies around concept of Typology.

I would like you to extend contextual references for Becher’s typology studies. You need to do this to achieve higher marks.

They were influenced by 3 key German photographers:

    Karl Blossfeldt
    August Sander
    Albert Renger-Pratz

Consider also what legacy they left and the students wo they taught at Dusseldorf Art Academy

Follow my instructions here and try and answer questions.

Produce at least 2-3 blog posts for each artist reference that illustrate your thinking and understanding using pictures and annotation and make a photographic response to your research into the work of others

    – Produce a mood board with a selection of images.
Provide analysis of their work and explain why you have chosen them and how it relates to your idea and the exam themes of VARIATION and/or SIMILARITY.
    – Select at least 2 key images and analyse in depth, TECHNICAL (lighting, camera), VISUAL (composition, visual elements) (interpretation, subject-matter, what is the photographer trying to communicate), CONTEXTUAL (art historical, political, social, personal), CONCEPTUAL (ideas, meaning, theory of art/ photography/ visual culture, link to other’s work/ideas/concept)
    – Incorporate quotes and comments from artist themselves or others (art critics, art historians, curators, writers, journalists etc) using a variety of sources such as Youtube, online articles, reviews, text, books etc.
    – Make sure you reference sources and embed links to the above sources in your blog post
    – Plan at least 2-3 shoots as a response to the above where you explore your ideas in-depth.
    – Edit shoots and show experimentation with different adjustments/ techniques/ processes in Lightroom/ Photoshop
Reflect and evaluate each shoot afterwards with thoughts on how to refine and modify your ideas i.e. experiment with images in Lightroom/Photoshop, re-visit idea, produce a new shoot, what are you going to do differently next time? How are you going to develop your ideas?

    6. EDITING: Make a rough edit of shoots (you can come into school and work on classroom computers or alternatively download a 30 day free trial of Lightroom/ Photoshop from Adobe. Click here for more details.

    7. EVALUATE: What went well? how can you improve/ develop work from here? Describe visual/contextual links with research, artists references, exam theme. Analyse your best two images following method: TECHNICAL – VISUAL – CONTEXTUAL – CONCEPTUAL

    8. FINAL OUTCOMES: Consider what your final outcomes will be and how to present them ie. single images or a series of images, diptych, or triptychs, grids etc.
