WILLIAM EGGLESTON

William Eggleston was born in July 1939. He is an American photographer and is credited mostly for his colour photography. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee and was raised in Mississippi. As a child Eggleston was an introvert and so spent a lot of his time by himslef. His early photography was inspired by work of Swissborn photographer Robert Frank and French photographer Henri Cartier- Bresson.

Eggleston first photographed in black and white and began experimenting with colour in 1965 and 1966. Colour transparency film became his dominant medium. The book At Zanith by Eggleston was created in 2013. He describes his book as“my childhood and adulthood escapes unexpectedly met each other.”

In an interview by Shahrzad Kamel from ASX magazine William Eggleston describes the book in a lot of detail and goes into the meaning behind it. Within the interview he talks about how he use to lie on the grass as a child and stare up at the sky while forgetting everything. He describes how he watched them move for hours while raising his hands to the sky. He says, “I wished I could touch them, I would dream of riding away on one; imaginary transportation to another universe.” The book contains abstract images of the sky and moving clouds. Although the concept is relatively simple, the meaning and spiritual connotations behind the idea is very powerful. Eggleston wanted his images to be artistic, and to resemble paintings and well as photographic images.

“I was interested in photographic works that were very much about photography, but certainly—hopefully—were grounded in painting.”

I love the bright pastel colours within his work. I also really like the simplistic feel they create. He uses colour to catch the viewers attention which is what I also aim to achieve within my photobook and final prints. Eggleston uses the sky as a landscape because its constantly moving and evolving which is what makes it so interesting. He also presents the images in a simple way which is very effective. I also want to keep this in mind when presenting my final images because it is a very effective way of presenting my abstract images.

wabi sabi // photobook ideas

As well as a film, I also plan to create a photo book containing the best images from my project. I want to display them in a story like way so that they flow from one to another really well. I will be linking certain images together depending on the objects shape, colour, texture and meaning. Instead of displaying the images as one size and format, I want to experiment with the sizing and layout of the images to see what outcome is the best format for my project. I plan to display some images larger then others so that their detail can be seen more easily and so that the colours have a greater impact.  This is the first layout of my photo book to experiment with the flow and format.

wabi sabi // 26.3.18 shoot

After school I went out with my camera to take some images of different things I found. Since my project is about insignificant things and imperfect beauty I mainly tried to look for the tiny details that we usually ignore. My project is also about growth and decay so I tried to find things to link to this such as the beginning of a growing flower or a decaying leaf. My project is about life in general so I also took images of tiny insects such as ants. However I wanted my images to by visually interesting so I looked for certain angles and frames and different ways I could use the subject such as holding the ant in my hand rather then just capturing it on the floor. I images are taken in my garden, house and also in green Island beach. They were all taken after school. Most of them have a small f stop because I wanted to highlight only the smaller details that I wanted the viewer to take in.

I used Photoshop to edit the images because I wanted to create the same atmosphere as I did for my previous shoots. It was the brightness that I wanted to replicate but I didn’t have to edit the image that much because I used the camera settings to create the aesthetic I wanted. Some images suited a black and white filter better then colour because it revealed the finer detail much more. When editing the images into black and white I used a much larger contrast because this made more of a difference between the dark and light areas which makes the image more visually interesting.

Comparison // mine and rinko Kawauchi

After doing my first body photoshoot I wanted to do a comparison of mine and Rinko Kawauchi’s images. I used Kawauchi as my main source of ideas because her images have a very spiritual element within them. Her images are bright which creates this pure atmosphere. I tried to produce this type of effect in my images using Photoshop to create this aesthetic Kawauchi also uses a very small f stop to focus primary on one particular spot within the frame, while the rest of the image is blurred. I really like this technique because it helps the viewer to focus on specific details within the image.

I have chosen to compare these two images because they are very similar in the terms of angle and subject. Both of the images are of an eye because the eyes are a very important features of the body. They are an extremely spiritual element because the eyes are what inhabits us to witness the world around us. Our eyes allow us to see pain, fear, love and happiness.  Kawauchi’s image of an eye is a much closer framing then mine and her f stop is also a lot smaller then mine because I wanted to capture a lot more detail then she did. I wanted to capture more of the face as well. The angles at which the images were taken are the same. The image is of the left eye being taken from the right side of the face. The brightness and feel of the image is similar to Kawauchi’s because I wanted to replicate her atmosphere. The colors however are different, mainly because of the background within the image. Kawauchi uses a blue background for her image whereas I wanted to have a colourless background because I wanted the focus to be on the face. Kawauchi’s image is also slightly brighter then mine because it was taken outside using natural light which created this soft, natural feeling. Mine was taken during the evening in a bathroom so I had to try reproduce this effect using camera settings and Photoshop.

The hands are another important part of the body because we use them every single day to do almost everything. They also change a lot as we grow up because they start decaying and gaining what we call imperfections such as wrinkles and scars. We also use our hands a lot to express different emotions such as fear and love. The image by Kawauchi and my image have many differences because of the angle of the subject, the age of the subject and the colours are very contrasting. Kawauchi has captured the back of the subjects hand because she wants to capture the wrinkles and veins of the subject. I wanted to capture the wrinkles on the palm of the hand because they revealed much more detail then the back did. Kawauchi used a much older subject then I did because I simply used someone that was there at the time which was my mum. The picture was taken in my bathroom because I wanted a simple white background whereas Kawauchi takes the image in a random place so the background has more detail in it. Since I used my hand to cover part of the flash, it created a pink tinge to the image whereas Kawauchi’s image has a very cold, white light because she used the daylight from outside.

shoot // body 1

This shoot was the first of the body shoots. I planned to use myself as the subject because I just wanted to get simple images of different parts of the body but it was a lot harder then I anticipated. I asked my mum if I could use her as the subject instead. The shoot turned out very well because I was able to capture the image that I wanted. I aimed to get the details of the skin and the form which is what I managed to do. The shoot was done in the bathroom because I needed a white plain background. The shoot was done in the evening so the lighting wasn’t the best. I decided to use the flash to help capture the details.   I wanted a pure, cool colour to the images so I used white fluorescent as the white balance setting. When I used the flash it was making the images too over exposed so I used my hand to cover the flash slightly. This created a really nice effect of a pinkish colour to the images. Overall I am very happy with the results of the shoot.

I made sure I got all the different angles I wanted to get such as the feet, hands and the face. I also wanted to get some of the bone structure because its an unusual part of the body. When I was photographing the hands and feet I wanted to get the unusual angles that nobody really captures, such as the soul and the ball of the feet. When photographing the hands I wanted to capture the insignificant details such as the wrinkles and folds. For the face, I wanted to fragment the individual details such as the eyes and ears.

Since my project Is about growth and decay and capturing the insignificant details this is what I wanted to try and represent within this shoot. I made sure I captured the growth of the body and the way its changing through time. I captured this by photographing the feet and hands, and the wrinkles which show the decaying of the body. Also by focusing on the hair and it changing to grey shows how its changing over time.

I selected the best images from the shoot and edited them using Photoshop. I wanted a variation of angles and details and I am happy with the amount and variation I have. The editing was very simple because I was happy with the colour and exposure of the images all ready. I made the images slightly brighter and lessened the contrast to create this pure bright atmosphere. I didn’t crop any of the images because I was happy with the framing.

experimental shoot // night branches with flash

This shoot was an experimental shoot that I hadn’t planned. It was done at night time in my garden. I wanted to capture nature at time time. I used the flash for the shoot because I liked the way it revealed the details with the dark background. I found that simply using the flash was too boring of an effect so I used my hand to cover the flash to what would happen. I really liked the effects it created because it made interesting shapes and shadows that made the image a lot better. By using my hand to cover the flash it also created a reddish tone over the scene which I really liked.

I edited the images using Photoshop. I didn’t change the original image dramatically, I simply added more colour and more contrast. I selected my favorite images and for each one I edited a colored and black and white version. This was because I wanted to the contrast and I really like the shadow and shadings of the black and white version.

shoot plan // body

During this week I plan to organise and carry out a shoot or a few shoots to capture the spiritual aspects of the human body. I aim to fragment the body and form to capture it in unique ways. I want the shoot to be simple and something that enables me create bright pure images. I don’t want to have images of just one person, I want to explore the differences between people. I plan to capture images of females and males, old people and young people and also people of different ethnics. I aim to explore the spirituality  within the human form.

The word Wabi-Sabi is also about the natural cycle of growth and decay. I want to explore this process in people and how the body changes over time. This would be represented by capturing images of old and young people. Since I am capturing spiritual elements and the imperfect beauty, I want to try and focus on the smaller insignificant details such as wrinkles and folds. I also want to capture images of the body doing things such as holding objects or talking. I aim to capture the movement as well.

The first shoot I plan to do is a shoot using myself. I wanted to start with me because I wanted to capture simple images fragmenting the body. I want a simple background because the main focus is the body itself. The background will be blurred anyway. I want to be capturing important aspects of the body such as the eyes and the mouth. I also want to capture images of the fingers and toes because they symbolize the beginning and end of the body which links to my concept of growth and decay.

After the first photoshoot, I want to start looking more at expressions and the finer details of the body, such as the creases by the mouth and the wrinkles by the eye. I want to start looking at these through different ages and different types of people. I want to try get a wide representation of people.

Wabi-sabi project // sea shoot

Within my personal project I plan to do many shoots to capture the insignificant events of day to day, however in a detailed and abstract way. The initial scene that I decided to start with was the sea. However I didn’t want to simply capture the whole scene, I wanted to fragment the environment and try to frame specific details that no body notices.

The shoot was done at Green Island beach at high tide so I could capture the water against the rocks. They shoot was done at around two in the afternoon and on a sunny day so that the lighting was good and clear. Here are the original images from the photoshoot.

I wanted to edit the best images from the shoot that really show what I wanted to capture.

project ideas // research

The idea for my project is to capture insignificant events and objects and show the spirituality within them. There’s a lot of different things that I plan to capture throughout the project. The photographer Rinko Kawauchi is my main inspiration for my idea and I really like her concepts and the subjects that she captures. The different thinks that I plan to capture are things that we see everyday but ignore because of there insignificance. Things such as light and shadows, abstract shapes and objects, different angles of the body and fragmenting everyday scenes.

I wanted to name the project something simple, catchy and something with a deeper meaning. The photographer Rinko Kawauchi has inspired me a lot through the process of coming up with ideas. She is a Japanese photographer so I started searching up different meanings of words in Japanese. My project is based on finding the beauty of everyday things and situations. I intend to focus on the purity and depth of things that we claim to be insignificant. The saying that I came across that I liked the most was ‘Wabi-Sabi’. The definition behind this word works really well with my project. Wabi-Sabi means “a way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay.” This is what I aim to explore in my project and is why I decided to name it Wabi-Sabi.

The images above is a mood board of different objects and scenes that I plan to capture within my series of images. The different things include images of the human body ranging from old people to young people, but fragmenting them so that I focus on particular parts. I want to capture images of shadows ad light and the different ways we see it throughout the day. I also want to collect a range of images to do with nature, such as the sea and flowers, trees, however I plan on capturing them in an unusual way. I also plan on taking image of animals such as insects and insignificant creatures.

Once I’ve done all the shoots I will choose a collection of the very best images to display as a group. I also plan on creating a video studying the light and the way it changes throughout the day.

spiritual images and connotations // research and analysis

https://www.sfmoma.org/artist/Rinko_Kawauchi

For my project I want to research and learn more about spiritual connotations within photography. I started by researching some photographers because I wanted to annotate certain images that contained a spiritual connection. The word spiritual means relating to or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things such as the body. The word spiritual creates religious connotations however I don’t plan to lead into religious aspects. The spirituality that I intend to focus on in my project is the purity and depth within insignificant events and scenes. I aim to capture the small details of everyday that people perceive as insignificant and portray them in a more detailed, beautiful way. All though these objects and events may seem insignificant they lead onto and contain a much more deeper sentiment.

The images below are by Rinko Kawauchi and they are examples of images that contain spiritual and deeper connotations. Although the images captured are events and objects that happen and are seen everyday, the way that Kawauchi frames them makes them unique and pure. Her series of images are bright and highly detailed which helps emphasise the spiritual elements.
