REPRESENTATION, ETHICS AND STANDARDS

How is McCurry’s images different compared to Singh in the way that they represent Indian culture?

I shall use the example of McCurry who is a documentary photographer but has been criticized for focusing on re-inforcing stereotypes on top of the reality to slant the accuracy of the representation of the photograph and Raghubir Singh who contrasts McCurry in the sense his images depict the realities of his environment.  However arguably both artists are realistic in terms of what they represent as particularly in India there are 2 sides to every coin and McCurry may be accurate in representing the beauty within India however Singha is perhaps more accurate in showing ht eeconomic and cultural hardships within India.

For McCurry

Steve McCurry (born April 23, 1950) is an American photographer. and has world-renowned success as a documentary photographer, who shoots in more deprived and less economically developed countries such as Pakistan and Afghanistan.  In doing this Steve McCurry has become very iconic in contemporary photography for more than thirty years, through magazines and books and many exhibitions .  Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; McCurry studied film at Pennsylvania State University, before going on to work for a local newspaper.  After working as a freelancer photographer, McCurry made his first trip to India.  Travelling with a few clothes and some film, he made his way exploring the country with his camera.  Since then he has worked in photojournalism and editorial and is famous for his 1984 photograph “Afghan Girl”, which originally appeared in National Geographic magazine which is shown below above.  Other examples of his images are included above:

This image of an Afghan refugee was published in National Geographic in 1985. The image captured the hearts of many as it caught the the impact of the surrounding context of which many people suffered and struggled so effectively in the photograph which is why it was so heavily publicised.  The context was set around the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan with the subject’s  family being killed and she had to trek as a refugee to a refugee camp.

The girl is the main focal point of the picture.  This is supported by the rule of thirds which her eyes are framed very effectively which this and the fact that the girl’s eyes are so colourful strengthen how effectively the viewer connects the eyes.  The eyes are almost hypnotic and tell a realistic picture as to the struggles the girl has and continues to face up to this point.  The effect on the viewer is we feel sympathetic towards this girl and her struggles and so because we feel so strongly about putting the right into the wrong that is shown through the girl’s eyes, as the viewer we start to examine other details that suggests the girl’s story is not just intriguing from an individual level but on a social level, it reflects the international relations and this impact on the whole of society.  for example interestingly the fact the girl is positioned to the far left third of the photograph and the contrasting red/brown skin and clothe shades that stick out from the green rural environment she is hsot in also reflect the idea that this environment isn’t the natural girl’s and because of this she appears slightly uncomfortable and reflects the journey and trials refugees faced from this war.  Because of this, this suggests McCurray has staged these photographs and has drawn criticism for fabricating/exagerating the truth from how this girl may have been shot in an unstaged shot which would essentially reflect the true horrors that went on in this time period.  I agree that the photographic features limit the usefulness for us in terms of finding out what the struggles of this war was like.  However on the other hand, I believe McCurray despite this has made an effort to at least through the model communicate to us from a personal and opinionated expression of the girl expressing how she feels towards her struggles that exposes more truth than what critics may say.  Many of McCurry’s images also have gone under criticism for this, since the images appear staged and to some portray far from the truth.  However I believe that despite an image being staged, McCurray is skilled at capturing the reality in his staged photographs in that the subject’s facial expression primarily or other composition features often reflect the hardships of a context through subtle but yet powerful techniques.  Even if the image is staged, it represents an accurate truth of the surrounding context that may not be captured as succefully in an unstaged photograph.  this is because by staging a photograph it gives the photographer and subject more freedom and control to express their views on a particuler issue.

I believe similar can be said with McCurry’s image of the Indian train  too.  This is because it may show a romanticized touristic approach to the photograph with slight clues suggesting the photograph was staged.  However in doing this, I would argue that it is irrelevant whether McCurry’s photograph was staged or not because some such as the New York Times may argue this is a slant of the real living truth.  It’s impossible for one photograph to cover the whole spectrum of issues in one country and it is the job of the photographer to focus on one specific issue and communicate that reality as effectively as possible.  By taking an unstaged photograph this is waht your doing, by taking a staged photograph you have the freedom to attempt to include the relative features in order to communicate and express the photographer’s views and feelings.   I believe that likewise the photograph with the train, by staging it it allows McCurry to communicate not just the economic hardships within India, but also the growth in Indian industrial might but also allows us to see the culture that flourishes within India and in doing this, it displays truth not only from  the photographer’s viewpoint but also from a factual one too.  Evidence within the photograph to back this up includes the highly romanticized lighting which compliments not only the abundance and variety of culture within India, but also with the Taj Mahal in the background symbolizing the Country’s rich history which creates depth to the photograph as a basis for the rest of the features in the photograph.  The train storming through resembles the economic and industrial growing might of India that is overlooked when so many photographers focus on the singular issue of poverty and social issues within India.  I like the feature of the train and the Taj Mahal because it not only represents where India has come from, it also emphasizes the idea of where India is going as well.  Finally the idea of having 2 men at the front of the train could symbolize two things.  That India is at the forefrnt of growth in the world as a forward thinking nation, but also the struggles it is and has faced in order to get to where it is and both men represent the poverty that exists amidst India’s economic power house growth.  Therefore in defense of McMurray, I believe that it is unfair to criticism his photographs as they may appear staged, but they represent very strong heartfelt issues from he people’s and subject’s he’s shooting points of view.  Therefore we should take it in our strength as viewer’s to understand what the photographer’s aims are and compare them with our own knowledge to judge a photograph’s accuracy in terms of representation but finally I believe that a photograph can be truthful when staged or unstaged, it is just a matter of method to achieve a similar result.  Obviously staged photographs can be manipulated to convey wrong messages which should be cautioned when viewing these images however staged photographs can be very effective at describing one’s feelings or emotions where an unstaged photograph could easily be taken out of context and easily used for a different purpose that which wasn’t part of the actual reality of the situation.

For Singh

On the other hand, Raghubir Singh is an India photoghraper.  because he is Indian I believe this allows him to see his own country – India from the inside as well as from the outside in how a Westernized individual may see his country.  Singh worked from the late ’60s until his death in 1999, traveling all over India to create a series of powerful books about his homeland. His work shares formal content with McCurry’s: the subcontinental terrain, the eye-popping color, the human presence.  However where these two differ is Singh has what the New York times calls a “democratic eye” where he may take a range of photographs relating to a range of issues whereas McMurry takes a photograph with incluing as many features and messages as possible into a single image.  His images include cities, towns, villages, shops, rivers, worshipers, workers, construction sites, motorbikes, statues, modern furniture, balconies, suits, dresses and turbans/saris.  There is a sense of power in his images but also yet a sense of bluntness and honesty which may be hard to find in Mcmurray’s images which may be fabricated with the photographer’s viewpoint against the real living conditions from the perspective of the ordinary fellow.  Comparitively the image of the people and the road below is very similar to McMurry’s image of the train inthat boh communicate the rapid growth and expansion of India’s industry at the cost of the people on society.  However where McMnurray has focused on portraying these people as being at the forefront of this revolution, Singh has portrayed the people in his images as people who are suffering meanwhile in the background there is wealth which isn’t accessible to most people.  Interestingly McCurry’s image could be criticized for suggesting that the two men  at the front of the train who are also at the forefront of this revolution may suggest how this wealth is only accessible to a small few elite and that he doesn’t cover and ignores the whole spectrum of the cost on society in terms of how this industrial growth is actually damaging for the everyday citizen rather than improving their lives.

The image above is interesting because its bluntness with the broken door is quite intrusive in the sense it appears rather forceful as we feel sort of confined to where wer are and cannot explore much of the photgraph.  This not only represents the roughness and busyness of Indian culture for many which McMurray contrastingly expresses it as very delicate and intricate, but also again the poverty that people live with.  In the image, through the door there is an army commander presumably from the days of British colonial rule.  This image appears like a reference to that and how even today, despite the economic growth, life is still the same for the ordinary folk.  This is because of the forceful door intruding in our faces and hgow we feel confined, it almost symbolizes the idea of a prison and as we look out of the prison door we see a direct link to British colonialism.  What is interesting is Singh has put us Westerners into the seat from which most Indian people sit and view India from and therefore it appears that the purpose of this images is to explicitly convey the hardships and remove the stereotypes from westerners such as McCurry who’s hoping to re enhance these stereotypes through creating highly romanticized images.  By taking these photographs from ground level, we start to see the realities of everyday life for most people and this in turn represents Indian culture in a very different light to McCurry.  Singh is therefore effective at producing images that as ordinary people ourselves, we can relate to and because of this we emphasize and trust them more as truth.  However it can be argued that these images may like with McCurry easily bet taken as truth where actually it is still very possible to manipulate and influence the representation of a photograh that is unstaged.  For example in the image with the door, it could be potentially argued that the strong link back to British colonialism is a strong exaggeration ad that  the India today which is outward looking and prosperous is far better than those days and could be insulting to the people who fought for Indian independance.  Therefore likewise with McCurry, when we see an image it is best to evaluate how well it represents the truth from the fiction and not take an image at face value as gospel as this could potentially affect the accuracy of the representation that the photograph is trying to communicate.

In conclusion, I believe no photograoher is worng, both are choosing to focus on very different aspects of Indian culture which in itself is such as broad term as each individual’s culture is different to another.  Both convey truth in their images using very different techniques to focus on very different themes and therefore no one is correct.

Review and Reflection

From my current project by looking at family and Environment, I am looking to move onto my own project based on where I explore my own environment that is of particular significance of me.  I have completed activities recently by trying to include influences from archives when and where I could.  This has included my own personal archive and public archives such as the ones at Alliance Francaise.  I have found it particularly interesting taking shoots of documentary and Tableaux and understand the principles of how this can be implemented in my work for this year.

After this past year since joining Hautlieu, I have explored many different topics, some which I enjoy particularly more than others which essentially some have stimulated my creative desire to explore certain topics further.  I believe that from this, I have a strong understanding of certain subjects which I believe I can strive in.  I particularly enjoyed looking at my landscape: Abstract and Surrealism, and structure topics that I believe I have explored the differing environments which fascinate me which has influenced my decision to persue looking at my own Christian environment.  However topics which I feel I haven’t felt I have enjoyed as much is particularly the portrait work that I have completed.  This is because portrait work for me I feel limits me in expressing my on views and opinions where landscpae photography opens up a lot more opportunity in order to be creative.

When working alongside Jonny Briggs and Tanja Deman I feel I have learned to appreciate different motives of photography and broadened my horizon in possible choices when considering how I can explore my independent project. By working with both artists, I have gained skills that are transferable in how I can construct a photograph in order to convey a particulate message like Jonny, or with like Tanja, how we can show others how we see the world through or eyes.  With this I am more confidant, considerate and careful in when I construct a photograph, or when I look for something to document in a certain way.

By looking at both very different photographers who look at different genres, I now can look for specific details and wider composition within photographs that help define the image and has influenced the format in the particular photographs relating to my independent project.  I have a strong interest in expressing my own feelings towards a particular interest, and with this independent project which I shall explore my own Christianity, I can focus on the specific details which I have learned from my previous topics to help convey what the meaning of faith and Christianity is to me.  This concept will be very significant this year in how I use this composition to explore my feelings at a certain time towards a particular point in my Christian Journey.

One major aim is to explore to the full extent of my own current state of emotions and feelings at a particular point in my life, with the help of archives, producing links between now and the past and so hopefully I can elaborate where I have come from, where I am, and where I may be going next.  In the past I have worked on a lot of photograph manipulation, particularly in my landscape work,  However in my own independent project I shall be looking to work on a more documentary approach to this where I shall do much less manipulation than in the past.  This is because I want to focus more on the realities of my life, and don’t want to distort the truth from the truth and I believe minimal manipulation can help paint a most accurate picture of my Christian journey.  Therefore my work I expect will be a much more simple approach in my editing process where I will particularly look to enhance certain colors or make minor changes that help enhance the truth of how I feel.

Photography and Truth

Truth or Fiction?

Photographs can lie by being manipulated, in order to change or influence our opinion of something.  This therefore poses the question of reliability.  Some cases I would argue that these photographs trying to manipulate our opinion are reliable because they want to show us the truth which changes our opinion.  However more often than not, photo manipulation often exaggerates, slants the truth in favor of the message the photographer is trying to convey.  This can be potentially harmful as it leads to the population to take the photographer’s opinion of a certain event as truthful, even if it is shot in the style of documentary photography.  Photographers could argue that they are simply taking what they see through documenting the world.  However the photographer is documenting the world in a way in which he perceives it, leaving out certain elements that contradict the documenting of his view on the world.  Therefore we have to consider before acting on a certain photograph of how useful an image is in helping us find out about something rather than treat it as factual trust.  This is because the photographer may for example being trying to express his political beliefs in the photograph which we have to acknowledge before we treat it as accurate.

Essentially the date of the photograph is very important in the sense that as humans from different generations look at a specific photograph, the morals of each generation change as time goes on and so the opinions towards the message the photographer is conveying  changes.  For example in the photograph below, at the time in 1945 and in America it would of been seen as a patriotic shot celebrating the death of fascism in Europe.  However in more modern days, facts have come to light over the years of what the US army and her allies did when invading Nazi occupied Europe and so the photograph leaves out the context in what the US soldiers did in order so that one day, they could raise their flag that is portrayed as so patriotic.

Furthermore in respect of this last point, it is important to note what the photograph is showing, and how much, whether it be a lot or a little which ultimately helps affect our reliability rating towards a picture.  In considering the provenance, it helps the viewer determine not just for example the photographer’s motives, but the wider context in how the photographer’s motives fit into the opinions of society, which helps us to understand whether much of society agreed with the photographer or not.  Therefore the location  of where the photograph was taken is important but also where the photograph was published.  The location of the photograph which was taken in Japan, from a Japanese man’s perspective would view the photograph as these imperialists invading their country.  Where it was published, in America, the general view of society would be one which is proud and honored that shows the US major role in the world.

This allows us to get onto the topic of propaganda which was particularly important in warfare in the early to mid – twentieth century which could be an example of this photograph, whereas in nowadays we see the levels of blunt propaganda as more unacceptable because propaganda in our generation is much more subtle.

Now I wanted to have a go at taking some photographs which may not tell the entirety of the truth in terms of their content.  I chose to shoot some relatives walking with a slow shutter speed, adding a blurred effect that would later mean the viewer would question who the identity’s of these people are.   By altering the photograph in a way so that the presence of these people is mysterious, the truth is tilted in the sense we don’t know the identity, the purpose, the reason as to whay they are there and what they are doing.

Archive Photography: Ugne Henriko (Mother and Daughter) vs Irina Werning; re-staging images; re-enacting memories

Ugne Henriko, Mother & Daughter

I really like this photograph because it accurately shows the aspects of similarities between mother and daughter from a documentary side but also the tabloid side shows an exaggerated  and staged side beyond the physical appearances that are similar but the deeper meaning between the two similarities of the character too.  For example the documentary side highlights the physical similarities of mother and daughter and how their likeness brings about a connection as if they are programmed and the daughter is another version of her mum.  This is so much so that it is hard to tell who is the mum and who is the daughter.  Interestingly I believe that this style of documentary photography incorporated spreads the message of the deep love between both subjects.  This now borders and touches upon the idea of Tableaux photography in which it describes the emotion and relationships between each subject on a personal level.  Clearly with their their similarities they appear close, however with the fact that the photograph has clearly been manipulated to look a quite a dark, sad scene which then poses the question about whether they have quite a staggered relationship.  It appears that despite at face value they may have similarities, but under the surface it is clear that there is a strong and similar sense of sadness expressed towards one another.  This is evident in particular features such as high levels of contrast – increasing the sharpness of the feelings towards each character.

Irene Werning, Back to the Future

I like these two photographs based on an archive approach to photography.  The boy on the left is clearly a child and the boy on the right is his older self re-united with the world of his childhood.  This photograph is interesting because it suggests that the boy growing up hasn’t grown up very much at all and is still the same person despite how much one goes through growing up into adulthood.  This is strikes me as interesting because it goes against the common experience that most people change immensely throughout their childhood.  It almost says to me that this particular person had very good memories  of his childhood and with that, relives his childhood today.  The lighting I also like too is one which is quite mellow and washed out with strong raw colors.  This shows how distant this memory of himself as a little boy is, however with these warm colors, this communicates to us that these are positive memories.  I like how this photograph is distinct in that it shows quite positive and happy emotions referencing to the character’s past because it is quite relatable to many people’s childhood’s themselves.

This photograph is another comparison of the similarities and differences of how time changes us through our of journey of life.  I find this photograph interesting because again, it is a recreation of the girl’s childhood, however on purposefully, it doesn’t try to appear directly identical in the appearance.  In fact the roles reverse in the sense that instead of on the surface the characters appearing identical and having a deeper meaning beneath the surface, here the photograph shows on the surface clear differences in each character but under the surface that is where the similarities are apparent.  I like how the characters are next to each other however we can clearly see the differences in the characters themselves such as their clothes, food and general posture.  However the fact both are partaking in the same activity in the same location shows an inextricable link between both characters.  The fact there is so many apparent differences arguably shows the similarities are that both enjoy being different.

Martin Parr – Life’s A Beach, Tableaux Artist Inspiration

For my Tableaux shoot I was heavily inspired by Martin Parr’s shoot: Life’s a beach.  Despite Martin Parr who uses documentary photography to convey the general feeling of the beach among how it is felt among the public.  I decided to use this as a way off showing Tableaux photography to express the difference between the general public’s view of the fun possibilities at the beach and focusing on my most personal and intimate feelings of the beach that are specifically constructed.I believe in my shoot, without including people in my photographs, I can construct the camera’s viewpoint as my own as I am seeing it through my own eyes.  Martin Parr however by focusing on how other people respond and interact with the beach in an environment where lots of people are doing the same thing, it appears to describe the general attitude to what the beach is associated with.  However with my shoot I wanted to not include anyone else so I chose more of an isolated beach to construct more of my own pure reconstruction of memories.

Image result for martin parr life's a beach

This photograph particularly strikes me because it is somewhat likened to my own shoot in the sense the little girl portrayed is away from a lot of the large crowds and hustle and bustle.  This re-enforces my view of showing mine or someone else’s personal relationship with the beach.  However the fact we can’t see the girl’s facial expression, how she is looking away towards the larger crowds and the focus on the Union Jack, is suggestive that this girl is somewhat institutionalized with the rest of society.  She may be enjoying herself which is most evident by the warm, bright lighting which the photograph is shot in, but it shows that she is still somewhat influenced by society.  My photographs aimed to contrast with this in the sense I wanted to depict a very uninfluenced view of from society of my childhood memories on the beach.

Image result for martin parr life's a beach

I like this photograph, as again it shows the common belief of the sea being associated with the beach.  I on my shoot decided to take photographs of only my kayak and boat incorporating them with the sea as most of my time I spent on them rather than swimming as that is most personal to me.  However Martin Parr chose swimming as more people do that when at the beach and so he could document this.  My form of Tableaux photography in a sense is somewhat like documentary photography because I am essentially documenting my own feelings towards the beach by constructing certain childhood memories that are personal to me.  I find it interesting how like in the previous photograph despite the warm lighting and playful nature of the people involved in the photograph showing they’re clearly enjoying themselves, we still can’t see anyone’s face – emphasizing the idea of how most people when it comes to the beach, are all the same.

Tableaux – Constructing Childhood Memories

For this shoot I went back to the area where I used to frequently play as a child and constructed an Environment of what I remember the sort of activities I got up to as a child.  I shot things such as dug holes, sand castles and other things that showed the activities  of playing on the beach, but also other things such as possessions like towels and buckets and spades to show me bringing my own objects to the beach that helped influence my personal opinion of the beach.  I believe this shows my personal relationship that I have with the beach which is quite precious in the sense that this particular beach is quite a quiet beach, allowing me to explore and enhance my understanding of the beach.

Tableaux Planning Mood Board

My mood board consists of planning on going out and recording a Tableaux shoot that essentially reconstructs my childhood memories of where I used to play – the beach.  I have chosen this because I have very dear and fond memories of the beach and I hope to show the activities that I as a child used to do.  I believe that I can recreate my memories of the beach and my relationship I had with the beach from when I was a child.  Regarding to the common features associated with the beach, I aim to try and show the other viewpoint of the beach, which few are exposed to and which people may not expect the beach to appear as they associate the beach with the sun and sea etc.  With this I hope to reflect my deep and personal relationship that I have with the beach and show how as I have matured, my opinion on the beach has somewhat changed.

Tableux Photography: Anna Gaskall vs Hannah Starkey; childhood vs adolescent; memories vs fairytales; literature vs cinema

Anna Gaskall

This photograph is interesting to me because of it’s mysterious, abnormal nature that is constructed in which it allows us to delve deeper into the deeper meaning of the photograph, in other words: what is the purpose of the photograph and what is it trying to tell us?  Clearly, this appears to be a direct reference to a childhood memory, reconstructed to tell us how this photographer looks back in the past.  Interestingly, the loss of saturation in the photograph appears to us as quite an old and distant memory because there is a lack of detail on the features of the memory and therefore because of this age of this memory suggests this is quite personnel.  The trees through the use of increased contrast almost show an intricate and diverse environment or world within a world.  This in a sense suggests that this is the girls natural environment in which she should feel  comfortable.  However the fact that through the darkening shades of green and the shadows, the woodland appears quite ghost like and that there is some sort of a creepy and quite scary presence surrounding the girl.  This is interesting because of the girls clothes/  She is initially wearing white which suggests innocence and vulnerability however the slow tint towards more of a cream color suggests a sense of worn use and how the environment has started to have an effect on the girl.  The photograph has been taken from a face on angle and this has helped the viewer to distinguish clearly the effects the hostile environment has had on the girl, for example: she is in the air with her arms and legs stretched out.  This uncomfortable position reminds me that she doesn’t appear to actually want to be there, however she doesn’t have a choice in the matter due to the fact that by her ghostly presence she appears to be of under some sort of influence, reminding me of the dangerous nature of the environment.  This use of tableaux photography is interesting because it allows us to essentially interpret the story in which the photograph is trying to tell us in our own way but still in saying that somehow really understand and connect with the photographer’s emotions that she is expressing.

 Hannah Starkey

This photograph is strikingly the opposite of the previous photograph in terms of the environment surrounding the subjects but similarly however, both girls appear to be young, impressionable and vulnerable while being presented under some sort of influence.   I find it particularly interesting how Hannah Starkey has chosen to use Tableaux photography to tell a story of the feelings and emotions of the young girl, however I like how the style of documentary photography is incorporated to extradite the very dangers, pressures and struggles that are experienced in young people’s day to day lives in a modern day interpretation.  The elements of Tableaux photography that prevail in this image are the strong features of how the girl’s body language in response to presumably her mother but the fact there doesn’t appear to be much motherly contact or affection being expressed towards her daughter shows how the relationship appears particularly strained or damaged.  This allows us to pose questions that make us naturally curious to find out what these root causes were in this strained relationship.  I particularly like how we can interpret what these causes could be, and through Tableaux we can appreciate the feelings of the subject more easily.  Clearly through the dark surroundings, suggests to me  that the girl is perhaps going through some of her own difficulties that is part of growing up as she although appears confident and comfortable, it doesn’t look like her natural self.  For example by the fact it looks the parent has had to speak to her and put her in her place even though she appears comfortable in her own environment.  This shows by the fact that this environment isn’t actually her environment as there is her parent putting her in her place despite the parent clearly doesn’t belong there.  This therefore explains and tells the story of growing up through teenage years that many experience differing phases and how the parent is a model or guide for a growing up teenager.

Documentary: Environmental Portraits

For my family Environmental portraits I chose to shoot two very different people doing two very different things of what they like to do within my family.  My first shoot consisted of looking at exploring what my brother does mostly when at home.  He is quite secluded, often not leaving his room very much at all, and I wanted to show very much how he really is on the inside on is own turf.  When not on his own turf, he is particularly uncomfortable and shy.  However when he is in his own environment he is much more comfortable and is somewhat protective of this.  I chose to document how through his appearance such as his style, body language and clothes  and also the environment in which inhabits, he is very messy and so to us the room appears quite a hostile and unwelcome place to be in quite.  However the fact he looks comfortable and is clearly showing ownership in this environment through his facial expression, it suggests the mess despite appearing messy and unorganized, is organised in a way that satisfies him.  There is a strong sense of arrogance depicted in these photographs of my brother, almost appearing that the attitude is somewhat dis-respectful and an exaggeration of over importance to my Brother’s beliefs.

On the other hand I shot my sister who is very much more open and less reclusive than my brother.  She feels comfortable in not so much her own environment, but an environment which is shared by so many other people which is why she is being shot in an open grassy/sandy area.  In a sense, it’s not directly her environment, but its everyone’s environment in which that makes her feel comfortable and happy doing so therefore everyone’s environment is her environment.  I believe this reflects the very sociable and excitable character in who she is.  The particular environment however isn’t necessarily the location in this particular instance, but can arguably be what my sister is doing and engaging in.  For example, she is playing and in doing so engaging ith the environment, something that has been impacted by man for generations and this shows how from a young age, humans are constantly changing and impacting the environment.  However where some people’s impact on the environment is negative and to hurt it, I wanted to show my sister engaging with it and sort of show her personal relationship with the Environment.  In saying this, the environment is essentially like a friend to my sister who brings her as much fun as a human friend might.
