Evaluation

Throughout this exam theme of truth fantasy or fiction, I decided to predominantly on the aspect of truth (more specifically, the truth behind closed doors). My first research point was getting into contact with the women’s refuge in Jersey and seeing if meeting could occurs in which I would be able to learn more about the help that is available in Jersey. After thinking that it was not longer a possibility by not getting a response, I decided to just focus on the stories that I have been told by friends (with their consent), and found the photographer Donna Ferrato, whom I found highly inspiring. I couldn’t believe the work she produced and it encouraged me to produce staged images. I then came across a photographer called Daria and her visual outcomes were really inspiring for me. I responded to her by creating my own body of work which experimented in the style that she used. There was also another photographer (Valerie) who was also very important and influential throughout my work, as I used statements that she had shared to represent the voices that had been heard.

Very close to the exam the women’s refuge contacted me and although there was no time to create anything visual from this, I found out lots of information thanks to the chairman of the organisation Pat.  It would have been very beneficial to have spent more time on the topic of the Jersey refuge for women and It would have been interesting to get to know more of the volunteers more personally and explore their roles within the organisation but I am glad that I got a change to know more about the organisation personally.

Overall, I am quite happy with the outcome of this project. At first, I was quite nervous as this is such a touchy and intense subject and I was afraid of doing something that would offend someone somehow, however I think I did okay and I am happy with the experiences and experimentation’s within my body of work. If I could go back and improve this project, I would probably create more shoots to have more of a variety of images to choose from to create a final outcome.

Overall final outcomes

Throughout this whole project, I have decided to select the following as my final outcomes:

IMG_5725 IMG_5700IMG_5734

With regards to presenting these images, I plan on using a triptych approach. I want these images printed out on quite a small scale because I think that that it is what would look best. These images were taken in response to a situation that my friend was in and I think I represented certain aspects within the story successfully.

The other outcome I have decided to present are these:

I plan on presenting them as a little series on foam board, and underneath I plan on having the statements (on their mouth) underneath each individual image. I think this body of work is quite strong and emotive and am happy with the outcome of this series.

Blurred analysis

These images were edited in Photoshop in order to represent the subject (as a victim) being hit. I think I applied elements of Daria’s style within this particular body of work, specifically the blurred effect. Similarly to Daria, I used natural light to produce this image and although It could have been conducted in the studio, I feel that this way adds authenticity and is more comparable to Daria’s body of work. I used a slow shutter speed to make it look like the subject is moving and away from the hand and I think it worked quite well. I think that out of the two images, i prefer the first one as some facial features are more apparent than in the other image. When I took the individual images, I composed the frame so that the subject was in the middle, however I adjusted this in Photoshop because I personally think it looks a lot better visually within the  rule of third aspect.

IMG_7536

This image here was taken in order to enhance the black mark o the neck. This here represents the victims situation in which she was being strangled, and I created this black hand print in order to reinforce that. Although it is slightly blocked by the hair, I quite like the fact that it’s subtle yet bold. Something I could have done to improve this shot would have been to make sure that there was no shadow surrounding the bottom half of the frame.

IMG_7481

This image stands as representation as the victim realized how bad her injury actually was. Although I quite liked this image in colour (because of the fact that the mark was red and therefore more associated to blood), I think it would look weird being the only piece throughout my body of work that was in colour. Nonetheless, I still think it is quite  noticeable that it’s blood and I plan on leaving it in the black and white effect. Compositionally, this is not the strongest of images that I have produced but I liked the context behind it.

blurred Edits

With the images I took from this Daria inspired shoot, I decided to merge and blend images together in Photoshop on order to explore the idea of the subject being hit. A friend of mine (different from the other situations I’ve talked about) explained to me how she was once in a situation where her boyfriend came home drunk, and he was already angry because he had been kicked out of the pub he normally visits. He began to hit her and eventually grabbed her neck and he was suffocating her.  Just as she was about to pass out, he let go abruptly and she ended up banging the side of her head on the bedside table, and because of the force she hit her head at, it started to bleed. She tells me how she has this ‘safe place’ at the back of her house where she goes and waits for him to cool off, and on this occasion, on her way to it, she leaned on the wall and saw blood left behind. It was after this she decided to go to the hospital. She explained to the nurse how she fell down the stairs and with the nurse believing her cover up story, she had to get four stitches and she had a concussion.  This body of work pretty much represents this in the style of Daria.

Here is a print screen that shows how I combined two images to create an outcome:

Untitled-1Untitled-2

By using the brush tool in Photoshop, I was able to merge the images together. After editing the blurred hand into the back image of the subject,  I adjusted the levels slightly to created a darker tone throughout the image so that it fits well within the context and within the style of Daria. I also experimented with this images by using different blurred movements from the subject to see which looks the best. Here is a gallery of the edited images from the shoot :

Blurred contact sheet

This contact sheet is in response of Daria and I have experimented with using a slow shutter speed in order to capture specific elements Daria portrayed throughout her work. Now I plan on editing these images, firstly into a black and white effect, and then merging images together in order to create the look that imagined.

Blurred specification

After looking at the work that Daria Produced, it has inspired me to produce a set of images in a similar style , because I find that style quite interesting/captivating. I remember looking at a poster with a hand print on it, and therefore came up with the idea to incorporate this idea of a hand print on a body to represent a mark left from an abuser. I plan on creating images that are blurred and plan on creating a specific image where there is a hand that looks like it is hitting the subject. I could perhaps use a slow shutter speed in which it looks like the subject has been hit, but I would have to see if they work well together.

Because of the fact that Daria used herself within her images, I plan on doing the same and will do it using natural window light and dark tones (similarly to her style). As far as creating a physical hand print on my body, I plan on just using black body paint to replicate this and I plan on creating this on my neck (inspired by situation a friend of mine was in).

Daria – image analysis

This particular image of hers I think is really interesting. I like how she uses herself as the subject within her images and this is something I plan on doing when responding to her. There is something almost haunting about this image, I like the blurred effect she created and is something I have experimented with throughout my project, and still plan on within the next shoot. The dark tones within the image are quite dark, but alongside the lighter tones of the background it enhances this darkness and adds to the haunting aspect  of the image. The way the dark tones have created this shadow around the eyes looks really captivating and it almost represents the darkness of her feelings (that she’d been holding in for years) being finally exposed creating this haunting effect. It looks as if she used natural lighting rather than studio lighting and I think that visually, it fits in with the troubling and sad context.

I like this image and it differentiates with all the other images she has chosen to present throughout her body of work. I really like the harsh lights throughout this image and the shadows creating hard lines and forms from the sun. Most of her other images are quite close up, and here you have the home environment which I think is crucial to include as this is the place where everything happened, the home where both her and her parents lived and is now just where her mothers depression has taken over her life. I like how she used natural light from the door, it definitely contributes to making the piece very interesting.

This image here, is really powerful and I think it represents her emotions getting  to her. Her expression looks fed up almost and the different harsh dark tones in the neck compared to the softer darker tones throughout the image works well and is really interesting to view. Her pose of holding her hands to her ears perhaps represent the fact that she is fed up at listening to her mother’s struggles and pain. Yet again, this image looks like it was taken in natural window light and is really interesting in the fact that this image looks quite old due to the darker tones throughout the background of the image.

Daria Klimasheva – research

Daria’s parents unfortunately got divorced when she was only fifteen years old. This project of hers entitled Embrace is a six year project all compressed  into a body of work containing a total of thirteen images. For Daria, photography became a sort of tool in which was a way in which she released the pain that she was holding alongside a way of telling/showing her mother what she was really feeling. The divorce was never something that came up in conversation, and she was brought up in a family where you smile when things get tough; to hide your problems; pretend that everything was okay even if you were so lost, confused and broken on the inside. Daria studied photography at Moscow State University and at the Danish Media School of Journalism. She purposely presents this story in English and stated: “When I imagine the way I would talk about this in Russian, it causes me pain.”  Vulnerability, however, grew into strength as she worked.

” I didn’t believe that I could rely on them any longer so, all of a sudden, I had to grow up in one day. First, I was trying to become a mom for my mom but it felt wrong.” —Daria Klimasheva

Daria stated  the fact that  you cannot go any further when you are full of pain and fear, and that eventually you realize that you can’t ignore it, that it’s time to face the truth and heal yourself. That is what she did, and she did so by putting some of her memories on the shelf. By creating an emotional, expressive visual story about the challenges of growing up in a family where feelings long remained below the surface, her images capture this visual darkness that she perhaps held inside of her mind and heart. Although her subject matter differs from mine, as her project focuses on her mothers struggle with depression after a divorce and mine focuses on domestic violence, I still feel as if there is still this connection that both explore a ‘dark’ side within a home environment. I find both concepts of visual and contextual aspects interesting and I think that her work is very poetic and conceptual.

Her work is very inspirational to me and I really admire the fact that over a six year period, she narrowed down and selected only thirteen images that represent her deepest and darkest feelings. Something else that I find interesting about her work is the fact that all of her outcomes are is black and white. I think this is powerful and was done purposefully because black and white images don’t usually give depth to the image and by doing this, it challenges the way the viewer thinks and makes them think about what is going on within the image and why.

Here are a selection of her images:

Tape idea analysis

It started when I first got pregnant.
It started when I first got pregnant.
I haven't told anyone
I haven’t told anyone.

These two are my favorite throughout this body of work. Mainly because of the fact that the written statement on the tape is really clear and visible to read. I think the statements as individuals are quite powerful and I think the black and white effect works well. My work prior to this have differentiated greatly in comparison to this shoot because they were taken in a home environment with objects and elements in the background representing that fact. The previous shoot focused more on the situation that was going on and less on the subject, whereas this shoot was intended to focus on the sole aspect of the what the subject has on her face. The tape I used is of a large size and i’m quite glad as I think that anything smaller would have been to small to see anything written on it. The soft lighting and tone within these images replicate aspects of Valarie’s work. Her images are staged and the expression of most of the subjects face are blank (similarly to mine) and I think this was the best approach when this particular context was this intense.

I think that because of the hard lines on the clothes of the subject in the second image, it makes the image as a whole stand out. Because the clothes of the subject in the first image are quite dark and not many lines , shapes or textures are visible, it is softer and she doesn’t stand out as much as the subject in the second image. With regards to final outcomes, I like this body of work and think it is strong in representing  victims’s once unheard voices.

Tape idea – Edits

I decided to pick out images that I conducted containing both black and white background . I feel like with the white background The writing on the tape is more visible. However, I prefer the images with the black background because it’s almost like they are emerging from the darkness and I quite like the brightness from the tape in contrast from the dark background.

When looking a the images lined up next to each other, I am definitely preferring the images with the black background and I feel like they are much more powerful than the ones containing a white background. I quite like this body of work and although it varies from the styles of the  photographers I have looked at, I think I have put my own style within this body of work. The emotionless expressions on their face is something I was going for. I think that if I were to capture scared/sad emotions, it would be too much and it would lose the point it’s proving.

Contact Sheet (inspired by posters)

I decided to created these images, purely from an idea that I had, however I wanted to connect it somehow to an artists that I have previously looked at and decided to connect this idea with Valerie. The images that she creates are quite perfect in the sense that everything is set up, it looks like she uses some sort of professional lighting and that is something I wanted to incorporate throughout this shoot. The staged and adjusted lights setting about the whole thing definitely connects with the work that she produced. Alongside the written statement I found from her website that I used to represent those (victims) who spoke out. My main reasons for conducting this photo shoot was because I was so shocked at her research including things that women have said to her and I found that just unbelievable, and it really horrified me at the fact that women felt like this/what people had said to them (e.g. ‘my mother asked me what I had done to cause this’).

I already adjusted these images into black and white and did this because that is how I want my final outcomes to be look like. An interesting idea that I could experiment with when considering final outcomes could be to mount them up a foam board, with the written statements underneath each image. One reason for this could be because when printed out, they might come out small and thus the writing may be difficult to read. Another reason to conduct this would be for a powerful and emotive effect, I also think that presentation wise, it would look quite interesting to have that standing out (as I want that to be the primary focus).

Poster Influence

I decided to look more into the ways that awareness is conducted and found some posters that I believe visually strong and emotive. I feel like I would like to respond (not in a poster style) but these images have  given me a few ideas of how to incorporate certain elements within my own body of work.

Image result for domestic abuse postersImage result for domestic abuse handprint posters

I like how the subject in the middle image has tape over her mouth, I feel like I can incorporate the context of the image on the right alongside this. The fact that a hand is over her mouth, not letting her speak standing as representation of the truth and reality behind this and even if there isn’t physically a hand over their moth, it can be just as hard to communicate and talk about negative encounters. Therefore, I plan on using the tape to represent the fact that they can’t speak out, along side the words on the tape which represent what some victims did say when they did have the chance to speak out.

SPECIFICATION

I plan on responding to this idea of not being able to voice certain things. I had an idea to combine things that a previous photographer Valerie had stated throughout her work (that women had stated to her) and I think it will be quite interesting to perhaps create portraits of various women and write in a sharpie over that tape with some of these statements:

It’s ok. It was my fault.

I have nowhere else to go.

I’ve waited for him to change. It’s been eleven years now.

It started when I first got pregnant.

My mother asked me what I had done to cause this.

I haven’t told anyone.

I’m afraid to go out.

I still love him.

I plan on conducting this shoot in the studio with studio lighting because I want the focus to be on the statements written over their mouths and not on anything in the background. I definitely think that using a variety of people will look better than just one person with all the different statements and as far as rule of third, I plan on placing everyone in the center of the frame because I think it would be odd to have them off centered.

Womens Refuge update

I heard from back from the women’s refuge in jersey and although there isn’t enough time to actually produce images from it, I still wanted to go and talk to someone about the work that goes on within this organisation.

These are some notes I made throughout my discussion with the chairman (Pat) of the organisation:

  • it’s run by a management comity
  • 11-12 people volunteer
  • this organisation started about 30 years ago by a women who is still apart of this organisation today – Rosie Sutherland. Inspired by a group of women who decided that something should be done to aid women. That something should be done in order for there to be a place were women can  go and feel safe.
  • 1 out of 4 women will be in an abusive relationship
  •  the fact that getting over an abusive relationship is a long process that women go through  , and in some cases , they go back to the abusive relationship they were in… for many reasons, but mainly because of money problems, housing ect.
  • this organisation allows the victim to be in control of their own lives and control the things they do and why.
  • police are highly involved within this organisation.
  • this refuge is highly confidential and their goal is to make this safe house a home and give women (and children) a safe and happy environment to live in.
  • the organisation employs staff in order to help with day to day care and jobs, these people can look after the staff needs as well as the women’s needs.
  • Volunteers can be anyone from lawyers to accountants and so on, the profession you are in isn’t important, what’s important is having a volunteer who is genuinely passionate about this cause and wants to help.
  • over 1000 people reach out to this organisation every year
  • conducting a training program is vital for each volunteer/staff member and it is all conducted here in Jersey by funding from the states and donations.
  • this safe house contains 7 bedrooms , 2 sitting rooms which are occasionally transitioned into bedrooms if needed, amongst other rooms like laundry rooms, a kitchen ect.
  • there are women who come back after a few years, or people that have previously been in a abusive relationship and want to talk about their past experiences.
  • this organisation is available 24 hours a day (via landline) , having someone that is available during an emergency is vital within the  philosophy of the organisation.
  • they accept anyone and everyone (from any nationality)
  • this organisation / volunteers encourage women to create and form good relationship

-The chairman I met with was a lovely lady named Pat who had been within this organisation for around ten years and she actually became aware of this position because of a friend who had to leave the organisation, thus she took on this Job. She says she had always been involved in some sort of charitable organisation but settled within the women’s refuge in Jersey and is still there today.

-Pat was telling me about her daughters friend who was unfortunately involved in a domestic situation and she would always say she wanted to go back , her sadness was because of the fact that she made a house into a home, all of her memories were there, in that house, and that is is something really sad.”For any woman to leave the house she’s made a home , that is heartbreaking.”- Pat

-I was interested and asked her whether the organisation had ever thought about branching out (because of the fact that there is currently one safe house in jersey). To which she responded that because of our population, something would have to be very wrong for there to be so many people that feel as if they are not safe and need a place to go in order to feel safe. Therefore she doesn’t see it happening anytime to and hopes it doesn’t have to come to that.

-I talked about how the internet is a big part in supporting victims throughout these apps and when I asked about her opinion on this she commented on the fact that it all really depends on the stage that someone is at. In some cases, it may benefit the person in some way or another but from her point of view, she looks at the advantage of having someone there face to face, someone who can empathize and be there in person , and she says that it is a huge difference in comparison to a text or email.

-Because this organisation focuses more on women suffering in a domestic violence situation and less on other issues such as rape, it was interesting to hear that a collaboration of organisations is a possibility for the future.

Overall, this meeting was very insightful and Pat was so kind as to give me a back which held information booklets that they give out at talks and much more that discusses the organisation. She also made me aware of their website online and gave me her contact card if I had anything else to inquire about. Although it is too late to produce images and possible final outcomes, I am really pleased with the amount of information I was given just with one meeting.

Staged analysis

IMG_7277

I took this image as a representation of what this victim was made to do. I really like the expression given off by the subject and I think it really connects to the context. Compared to the other images, the background of this image consists of a plain wall, I like this difference in comparison to the other images in which are taken in a home environment. It allows the view to focus on what the subject is actually doing, instead of focusing on location and distracting objects in the background; the focus is all on the expression and situation the subject is in. When first conducting this shoot, I didn’t want the arms and hands of the subject to be visible within the image, I simply wanted a (close) head and shoulder shot that showed the belt around the mouth. However, I quite like the fact that you can see that she is doing it to herself because that is what this victim actually went through, alongside all the confusing and scared emotions (which I feel are expressed quite well within this image). I feel like when editing this image, I was a bit too focused on creating these dark exposures to co-exist with the dark memories,  thus the darker tones within this image are quite strong and I plan on lightening it up a little bit via Photoshop.

IMG_7334IMG_7314

These images were produced with the intention of being blurred and slightly out of focus. I conducted this effect due to the fact that when discussing these negative encounters, the victim would constantly say how she didn’t remember a lot and when she did, the memories would tend to be blurry and confusing. Thus, by creating this effect I felt that I was creating this connection visually and contextually. The close up image of the hand holding the belt is quite interesting and goes against the normal/perfectly composed portrait. This image doesn’t actually include the subjects facial features, but embodies other small elements that I felt necessary  within this narrative such as the fact that the subject is sat on the floor (behind a door) and the outstretched hand holding the belt. These particular aspects fit in well with what I was told and adds to the suspense of this body of work. The other image I decided to include, consists of the subjects facial features and although blurred (as intended) through the use of a slow shutter speed, it also fits in representing what happened. I like how the shadow over the subjects cheek looks almost fragile and I like how she is looking down from the camera and I think the fact that she is behind the clothing which is hanged up behind the door looks genuine and adds authenticity to the image.

IMG_7339

This image is quite similar to the images above, however in this frame, I captured the full body of the subject and I think this image is more visible in representing things like background/location. The angle of this image isn’t directly centered and I positioned myself slightly higher as if someone is slightly looking down at the subject, as if the viewpoint was from the abuser. With regards to rule of third, I positioned the camera so that the subject was not centered and more to the left of the frame (because I thought it wouldn’t look as good if she was directly in the middle due to the clothes hanging on the door behind her). Also, there is some negative space to the right side of the image however I think it looks better than having negative space on both sides, surrounding the subject. Plus, I think it works quite well as you can see that it is a door and it’s quite evident to notice the fact that she is sat (in a scared and shy manner) behind it. I used natural window lighting  for this particular image and looking back, I could have improved it by perhaps making the room slightly lighter to create a darker mood.

Staged edits

This series of images represent the story on the previous post. I have  decided to edit these images above because I believe that they are the most strongest throughout this body of work. I quite like the fact that some images are blurred, and deliberately selected the blurred images as representation of blurred memories my friend had. With regards to final outcomes, I am unsure whether I would want to present images in a series or as a select few and present them individually. Throughout this shoot I experimented with different compositions and shutter speeds in order to create specific effects. In some of the shots, the exposure seems to be quite dark, and although that was the sort of effect I was going for (to stand as a representation of dark memories); I’m not sure that it worked very well and looking back at them now, I probably should have ignored focusing on exposure as that could have always been adjusted in photoshop. I think that the expression of the subjects face fits accordingly with the topic and specific situation, and definitely think that it connects the contextual factors alongside the visual aspects. The background and setting is in a bedroom, due to the fact that it is where the situation occurred and I wanted to staged images as accurately as I could, including little things like location and clothing. It would have been easy to conduct this shoot in the studio, using chiaroscuro lighting eat, however by doing it in a home environment, it brings forth the fact that these things happen in what is supposed to be a safe place; a home.

Staged response – Contact sheet

This response was completely inspired by the incident that a friend of mine was involved in. To reiterate, she was essentially made to retrieve objects that her boyfriend would then hit her with. From getting her to tie belts around her mouth to wax being poured on her skin, this series focuses more on the belt situation alongside locations of where she would go after she was beaten. By using a belt, her abuser would often tie her hand to something to stop her from retaliating, and get her to tie it around her own mouth in order to stop any screams or loud cries for help. Here are a selection of images that stand as representation of certain aspects throughout this particular encounter. I deliberately created this series of images to be in black and white as it is an occurring theme within this project. I experimented with different lighting within this body of work as I wanted to see if i could create different effects and styles by adjusting light, composition and the focus of the image. The last quarter of the contact sheet is an idea I had of having a woman with lots of make up, with one piece of her face (eye) edited out so that underneath, you can see the true appearance and state that she is trying so hard to cover up. Looking at the general composition of those images i’m not sure whether I want to use it as a final outcome, nonetheless I still want to experiment and see what it would look like.

True Events to stage from

Domestic violence is abuse between two adults who share the same household . Criminal domestic abuse may include physical assault such as slapping, hitting, pushing, shoving, etc, sexual assault/rape, stalking/harassment, or blackmail. Non-criminal domestic violence may include emotional abuse like intimidation, mind-games or financial abuse like controlling money. These latter forms eventually turn into criminal behaviors in 80% of cases. Domestic violence can in fact be perpetrated by and against people of any gender, age, income level, race, religion, or any other demographic area. Perpetrators of domestic violence often try to explain/justify it with circumstances outside of their control: drugs, alcohol, mental illness, troubled childhood, anger problems, hard day at work, etc, in some cases claiming that if only the victim didn’t provoke them, the abuse would not have occurred. The victim adopts this perspective by walks on eggshells, yet seems unable to prevent or even predict the next violent episode. Perhaps due to the fact that they aren’t the one responsible for it.

In accordance to my project, I have spoken to a good friend of mine who has unfortunately been through an abusive relationship and as far as her story goes, one of the most shocking in my opinion is where there was a phase within her relationship where her boyfriend would come home and he would start to beat her  when she said or did something that angered him. However, this differentiates from other stories I’ve heard because of the fact that  he would make her go and find objects that he would then beat her with. For example, she was telling me an incident  where he came home, they had an argument and he told/instructed her to go and get a belt. When she refused, he hit, shoved and kicked her and asked her again. And this would be repeated until she did what he asked of her. So she would then get what he wanted, and he would beat her with whatever object he could get. In some cases she would be instructed to find a belt, and in one extreme case, she was told to bring a lit candle which he then poured boiling hot wax on her body.

Something that I found quite shocking and unfortunate to hear was when she said how easy it is to say ‘I am never going to be in an abusive relationship, i’ll just leave him…’ In my friends case, she wasn’t actually aware that she was in a relationship, and every time it happened, she thought and really believed that ‘he would never do it again.’ She also stated how this was her first relationship and her first real love, she says now how looking back, she wishes she would have done something and not just accepted the way he treated her. She was in this relationship for three years, and during the second year, she went away to university only to find out that his intentions were to follow her there. Fortunately for her, they split up a year later as he was moving  to a different country.

One of the ways in which she was able to fully understand the severity of what she had been through was because she opened up to one of her friends at uni and explained everything that happened to her. Her friend insisted that she call the police but she refused and didn’t in the end. Even as crazy as it sounds, she said that through everything that happened to her, she still felt something (albeit small) for him.

My response to this will be staged, and will contain a woman holding the weapons that were mentioned in the story. Although some portraits will incorporate facial features and expressions, some will focus on specific elements/objects within the image. The two main objects that I wanted to focus on was the belt and the candle/wax element.

Flowers (2015)

I quite like how disturbed this image is and I would like to produce a similar representation as it fits perfectly with what someone told me. It was valentines and her boyfriend bought her some flowers, later that evening they got into an argument about something petty (like usual) she says to me. His first reaction was to go to the flowers, rip them off the  stem and rip them into pieces. He then headed to her as a target and started pulling her hair and shoving her down until she fell on the floor. As that wasn’t enough, he then got the pieces from the flowers and shoved them into her mouth. She told me how whenever he did thing like this, he would have this look in his eyes, like he was looking at her but he wasn’t. “His eyes would look wild” she says and that was probably one of the most scariest things because “you never know what’s going on in his mind”.

Online Research

I find it quite interesting how technology has played such a huge role within the last few years when concerning the issue of domestic violence. For example an online app was created in order to aid those victims who are either afraid or cannot leave to talk to someone. However, victims are able to access help through this online app  in order to alert authorities if they feel as if they are in grave danger, and they can do this without the suspicion of the abuser knowing . There are many perks to this app, one is the fact that there is a button in which you press it to divert the page to a random page, this is done as a precaution if the  abuser suddenly enters the same room or takes an interest of what the victims are doing, they wouldn’t be aware of what the victim would be trying to do. This app is also a help line and directs victims to particular helplines and help centers which are highly dependable. This allows them to talk to a professional and get proper help.

Whilst doing some more online research about online help, I found an article which explains how high school students were asked to create an app for their entrepreneurship class ,  and two students in particular decided to create an app which is called SafeHaven, and allocates a victim  of domestic violence anonymously with a councilor/mentor. This allows victims to receive coaching and support and whether you are the victim or you are a friend of one, this app helps these people to get through some tough times.

These students explained how they did some background research on the topic and this aspect stood as one of their main inspirations for why they wanted to produce an app like SafeHaven. The fact that South Carolina has one of the highest rates in the nation of deadly violence against women played a huge role within this project and they stated that “We wanted to start this because we know there are so many people suffering from domestic violence, and we knew we could do something through this contest.” said Gathings. “We wanted to help them out.”I can only imagine how any lives these app has helped and potentially saved, and it’s a great reinforcement to show people that things are being done and there is help out there for those who need it but are perhaps afraid to go out in person to receive it.

I came across this video and this whisper app is quite popular on Facebook and youtube, but I found this one which shares what people have said about being in a domestic relationship, the fact that people are still strongly effected even when they are not currently in this situation really shows the extent of their feelings and fears.

Image Analysis

IMG_5734IMG_5725

After approaching certain elements throughout the story that I was told, I decided to only focus on a few aspects within the story. These two images here stand as representations of the situation where the victim went to the bathroom  to clean herself up after what had happened to her. I like how in the first image, the bruise on the eye is quite evident and what she is holding is blood from a busted lip . I also like her expression, it’s quite strong the way she is just looking down at what he did to her (in disbelief almost). I quite like the second image (on the right), the way she is bracing herself using the sink (which is something she told me she did). It’s not that noticeable but there is a bruise on her right arm which adds authenticity to the image, and I quite like the fact that you cant see all of her face, what you can see is the messy hair and it fits in accordance with the story as she was dragged by her hair to the floor by her fiance. With the first image, what I could have done to improve it was to perhaps focus the camera to the left in order to get rid of the negative space that is located on the right side. However, this style reminds me of more of a documentary style which is what Ferrato’s images are inspired by.

IMG_5642IMG_5698

I took these images here to show some marks that were left on her body. These images are quite similar and due to this, I will select only one as a possible outcome (and the same will be done to the images above). I like how in the lighting and composition of the first image, I used flash for this and I think it works with this particular image because captures the bruised eye, the messy hair and the fact that she is looking away from the camera represents the fact that not looking at someone in the eye represents weakness, thus suggests the state he put her in, and how he made her feel worthless, unimportant, ugly… all word she used herself. It also reflects and embodies similar qualities to photographers and images that a have previously looked at. The second image differentiates slightly from the first. Flash was not used for this and the image itself is quite blurred, like her memories. When describing this story to me, she mentions a couple of times how some parts were a blur and sometimes she would black out and not remember what happened to her. Compositionally,  this image could be better, but I chose this image because I liked how she is looking down at the mark left on her arm. Something I might consider if I am to use one of there images is to perhaps add more bruises on her body via Photoshop. I think it could be an interesting experiment to conduct to see if it works.

Edits

This shoot was quite interesting to conduct as this series represents a situation (I was told about) in which this woman would frequently receive beatings from her fiance. On most occasions, she said  it would normally be on the weekend as that was the time he would go out to the pub and come back drunk. When he was drunk, she said that it was always worse because  he would be more ruthless and it was harder to get him to stop because he was just so angry. She said at least when he was sober, he knew when he was going to far and would just walk away, but when he was drunk, he would go to far and this was when she would end up with bruises and marks all over her body. On one occasion (the situation I am representing), her fiance came home, they argued, he hit her a couple of times and walked out, but only to come back hours later completely drunk and “ready for round two”. She said she was asleep on the sofa, and was dragged into the corner of the room by her hair, and he started to smack and pinch her skin, which then led to punching and kicking  her. She would scream for help, but realised too late that it was a bad idea in the long run as instead of using her body as a punching bag, he would use and beat her face to ‘shut her up’ so to speak. This incident, she said was the worst one and she dragged herself into the bathroom – after he passed out on the floor – to clean herself up. She was horrified at the reflection staring back at her. She said the bruise was already evident on her eye and her lip swollen and chin bleeding. When discussing this situation together, I asked her whether she had ever thought about leaving him, to which she responded that she already tried to, but when he figured out what she was doing; he forced her into their bedroom, and explained how if she ever leaved, he would ‘make her pay’. Also, she explained how he had grown quite close to her family and she feared that he would go after them or make them suffer in her place. She said that no matter what, she was not going to marry him and she stuck to her word. In the end, she fortunately got away and moved here to Jersey (her parents where moving house so she didn’t have to worry about her ex-fiance doing anything to them). From old friends, she found out that he had actually got another girlfriend, so that definitely eased her mind and sort of assured herself that he would never go looking for her.

The model I used for this shoot was not the actual person who had been in the abusive situation and I applied make-up in order to replicate a bruise (similarly to how she had described it to be). It was very convenient that she already had a bruise on her arm from an accident at work, thus I used that to my advantage and used it it quite a few of my shots. A way that I could have improved these images was to perhaps include more of the environment around her, she (the victim) explained to me how messy the place would get and how she would spend hours cleaning up. I could have incorporated this to create more of an authentic feel throughout this body of work.

Contact sheet

During the Easter holiday, I contacted the jersey women refuge center to ask permission to come over and talk to some of the women. However, I did not get a response and therefore have decided to go with my plan B. This idea consists of taking staged images of situations that certain victims have been through. I know people personally and these people have told me heartbreaking situations that they have been through and therefore plan on using their stories to create representations of their situations through staged imagery. Another idea which could be conducted would be to replicate those of Ferrato’s images and therefore will create images in similar techniques and styles. Although for now, I wanted to focus on this idea of creating a narrative. I knew when conducting this photo shoot that any/all outcomes would be black and white as  I feel  it fits in with the style of some of the photographers I have researched (Ferrato being one of them). When evaluating the overall performance of this photo shoot, I feel like the images created  were okay and represent parts of situations that some women have been through. When looking back at all these image, some appear to be a bit blurry/out of focus however, I think that it sort of fits and can represent the fact that a lot of these horrifying memories can in fact be blurry, either by the fact that they don’t want to remember, or they were injured and literally can’t remember. I don’t think these images are powerful and emotive in the way that Ferrato conducted her images, however her images were of real situation happening in the moment and thus would be quite difficult to create anything on the same emotive level. Here are some of the images from the photo shoot:

This image here is also one of the images that I personally find interestingly shocking. You can see this women in the hospital who has just had stitches and as a viewer, you wonder what happened to her. When looking a little more into this particular image, I discovered that this woman called Martha was actually stabbed by her boyfriend. I found a statement in which she said that  “He didn’t mean it. You have to believe that the person you love wouldn’t intentionally do this kind of things.” I like how this image is it black and white, I feel it adds to the dramatic and horrific context. Her expression also shows her pain and you feel so connected to her and you almost feel her pain and emotion as if you were in the same room.  I also like how in this image, you can see the medical items in the back ground, and the disinfectant liquid ect. It sort of brings authenticity and reality to this image.

I really like this image Ferrato captured in a woman’s refuge home. A lot of the time, people forget how domestic violence not only affects the victim, but also negatively effects the children involved in the household and in the situation. This image here is very powerful in the fact that it’s showing what i presume to be the mother with her daughter, and she is teaching her to be strong and brave. This is quite emotive as it could perhaps stand as a representation of something the mother withes she had more of when she was in her situation. Whilst researching more into statistics, It was stated that children involved in a domestic household tend to be more shy/quite and emotionally disconnected, this image here shows a mother trying to change these facts and prove to her daughter that she is strong and  brave.

“He fights all the time but it was never this bad before” Karen

In this image, the women sitting in the chair is called Karen and her boyfriend is being arrested by the police. There is a child to the side of her mother and it is almost as if she is hidden away. This is like a representation of how thing are like with many children in domestic situations, they are silent witnesses. As her mother sobs while the abuser is being taken out, she is just sat there observing the shocking events surrounding her and she is watching this unfortunate event occur. I find that the child in this image is just as/ if not more powerful than the mothers distressed expression because the child’s face is almost blank, perhaps because of the fact that this probably isn’t the first time for something like this to happen.

Donna Ferrato

Ferrato is an international photojournalist specifically known for her groundbreaking documentation of the hidden world of  domestic violence.

Ferraro decided in 1979 to move to New York City, where she began to photograph in sex clubs and nightclubs, solely focusing on documenting the heady nightclub culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s at legendary establishments (an example being Studio 54, Mudd Club, Xenon and many more. Ferraro was then contacted to photograph a prominent swinger couple known as Gareth and Lisa. Following this lead, she immersed herself in Gareth and Lisa’s lives (and she even ended up moving in with the couple).

“As time passed, however, I began to realise that Garth was not the benign, devoted husband he had first appeared to be…” – Ferrato

Ferrato witnessed a horrific scene where Gareth attacked Lisa and beat her mercilessly, which then led her to then his herself in the master bathroom. After witnessing this horrific attack, she stated ‘That night changed me forever.’ This therefore led the direction of this project to altar, and gave her a new drive to reveal and expose the unspeakable things that happen being closed doors. It was evident when when the course of her project changed this work was going to be emotionally difficult as well as dangerous (entering these negative and abusive homes). I read in an article of the New York Times from 2012 that she took pictures because of the fact that she knew that if she did not, people would not believed that it actually happened.

Through the next ten yearn of her photography career, Ferrato travelled across the country with the desire to photograph domestic abuse. This even included situations where she would in fact ride in police cars, sleep in  shelters, staying in the homes of battered women and many more.  Her work eventually led  to the book publication of entitles ‘Living With the Enemy’ alongside an expose of the hidden world of domestic abuse. In the end, her book Living With the Enemy went into four printings and, alongside exhibitions and lectures all across the globe, and thus sparked a national discussion on sexual violence and women’s rights. In 2011, Ferrato launched the I Am Unbeatable campaign, which aims to expose, document, and raise awareness of domestic violence against women and children by creating an archive of stories, photographs, video narratives, and by emphasising the fact that these are real stories  of real people.

This is probably of of the most iconic photographs taken by Ferrato. It’s not hard to guess what is going on in this image, contextually this domestic case has led to this image of a couple Ferrato was staying with to capture lust and love and in the end, she captures the man (Gareth) hitting his wife (Lisa) , and when researching more into this specific photograph, I found the statement that Gareth stated when Ferrato questioned his motives and after him throwing Ferrato down to the ground, he stated :  ‘I’m not going to hurt her — she’s my wife. I know what my strength is but I have to teach her that she can’t lie to me.’   I find this absolutely shocking and unfortunately, situations like this occur too often. The image itself is visually powerful as you can see her leaned away pose trying to escape the strike of his hand on her face. Even though you can’t see any of their faces, his stance shows his power/status and you can see his anger by his stance, and you can almost see her frightened expression in your own mind and you can sense how scared and powerless she is. This was the image that changed her photojournalistic career as they then solely focused on the hidden aspect of domestic violence.

These images represent her work and underneath them, powerful statements explaining what is happening.

Here is a short video in which explains everything about this body of work. She talks about her first hand experiences about being a photojournalist and the struggles she faced when documenting this lifestyle.

Valérie Mesquita

I found that during my research, I discovered plenty of interesting topics however they differ greatly from one another. From reflections and landscape to domestic abuse, they are topics in which i would like to experiment with however i’m not quite sure as to how i can connect them. Thus, i have decided to predominantly focus on the issue of domestic abuse specifically looking at the photographer… She created staged images representing those who have been victimized by domestic abuse.

I find her work particularly interesting due to the fact that she stages her images and she has full controll of what she is doing and why. She tends to use various staged images in a collaged manner and although rare within the photographic community, i find it particularly powerful when applying it to her work.

—————-

I have found a few inspirational photographers during my study and research of domestic abuse, one of those artists is called Valérie Mesquita .

Her project entitled ‘Just Between Us’,  is an independent photography project. She produced this body of work because she was someone who has had enough of hearing stories about women who are victims of violence inside their own homes — stories often about very close and dear people. After she researched the subject and conversations with many women. Conversations about suffering acts of violence and not telling anyone, about suffering and speaking about it about the devastating effect these events have in a person’s life, about seeking help, about fear, about guilt, about feeling impotent, about silence, about all the complexities which this theme englobes — this project was the way Valerie took a stand to say “I don’t agree”.

She stated clearly that her intention wasn’t to offer answers but in stead to distribute and generate discussions on the subject. Thus she therefore stated that her work wasn’t a campaign, but a reflection on  theme which isn’t given enough attention in her home town (in Brazil).

Something that i have personally emphasise within on of my first blog posts about domestic violence is the fact  that there are also children, elderly people and men who suffer physical abuse at home. However, this particular project emphasises and deals exclusively with domestic abuse against women. It occurs in all social spheres and in all age groups and Valerie states that it is often closer than we can imagine, which i believe to be very true. ‘ The numbers are frightening.’

All women  photographed within this body of work are actresses, but they are portraying real life situations. ‘We aren’t talking, therefore, about specific people, specific cases. These characters are a representation of a huge and complex context which affects many people and which must be discussed.’

These images are a form of protest.

This is exactly what values I want to portray throughout my own body of work. Her work and representations fit accordingly to my ideas and plans and Valerie has inspired me greatly when connecting to her work contextually.

On this website, I found some statements that Valerie had obviously heard before and they are all upsetting and just unbelievable. Here are a selection of them :

It’s ok. It was my fault.

I have nowhere else to go.

I’ve waited for him to change. It’s been eleven years now.

It started when I first got pregnant.

My mother asked me what I had done to cause this.

I haven’t told anyone.

I’m afraid to go out, to walk the streets.

I still love him.

https://d10rp68l4anj4z.cloudfront.net/projects/22086-just-between-us

Her images are simple portraits of the women who have been victimized, still with injuries noticeable on their faces and bodies. These image I find are very powerful and although they are all portraits, they are portraits in which show the victims story through their expressions, and they are portraits in which show the reality of the aftermath of these domestic situations.

More Analysis and Research

As well as looking into documentary photography, I have decided to look at staged photography. I find that this topic is particularly interesting and when researching into it, I found a photographer called Jeff Wall who’s work I find quite interesting. Although Jeff Walls differentiates contextual from what  I would do,  there is something about his style of work that captivates me. When considering my own work, I would consider contextually focusing on the issue of domestic abuse an thus create staged images representing particular situations victims have been through/are still going through. The video below is about Jeff Wall explaining further into his style of photography. He states that staged photography is a way in which is expressive and challenges social conventions. It can be conducted in order to analyse or descriptively access an analytical point of view, in order fully comprehend the audacity and severity of specific subjects. I find his work particularly interesting due to the fact that he portrays essences of documentary styled photography in a manner that visually represents that of a documentary style.

master.m3u8

In my time, I’ve been accused of being afraid to go out into the world to take pictures, like a so-called ‘real’ photographer does,”- Jeff Wall

Inspirations for topics to look at through the use of lens culture website:

-an interesting concept could be to produce work representing the fact that society is begging to take over our lives in a negative manner. Could represent the fact that a lot of children don’t actually know what to do with their lives and how most have perhaps forgotten the joys of being and playing outside: https://www.lensculture.com/articles/dan-wood-suicide-machine-is-bridgend-really-the-town-with-no-hope#slide-7 c543d099-5e53-4c5a-978b-80f52ae5fa13.jpg

-I quite like this concept of this is not real life as I find that we all have different views and opinions on what is real life and what isn’t. This idea could be represented in many different manners, from photographing everyday life, to everyday situations. https://www.lensculture.com/articles/dominika-gesicka-this-is-not-real-life …4325244c-29ca-4e2d-a8c3-e734f42a9c77.jpg

After conducting my research, I have found interest in a few different particular topics.

The first being The focus on truth behind relationships, and the truths being hidden in fear of someone. Focusing on domestic abuse is of particular interest for me because I find it such an emotional topic and the fact that many people are being victimised every day is horrifying. I also connect personally to this topic as I have a friend who has opened up and told me about her past abusive relationship, as well as two family members being affected by this issue. I would want to represent things that they have told in the manner of staged photography and for now, I plan on using myself as the subject.

Story to look at in more depth…

http://thebaffler.com/blog/battered-women-behind-bars-true-stories-on-stage

Artist to look at: Donna Ferrato

-http://www.donnaferrato.com/work                                                                      -http://www.iamunbeatable.com/the-archive/

Online, I came across an article which talks about ways to bring awareness to domestic abuse. Although my outcomes would look very different from the ones below, it sort of allows people to see the negative emotional and physical impact of domestic abuse, and this is something I would want to portray throughout my images.

Uploaded by YouTube user fero061982 , the video is titled “One photo a day in the worst year of my life.”

violence

This is an extract from the page that explains what the project is about:

It starts out like all the other photo-a-day projects: we see a woman who apparently faithfully snapped one mug shot each day. As the video progresses, however, we start noticing that something is off. Bruises begin to appear and disappear from the woman’s face, with the injuries becoming progressively more serious. At the end, we discover that the whole thing is actually a Croatian public service announcement that’s meant to draw attention to the widespread problem of domestic violence. The sign held up at the end reads: “Help me, I do not know if I can wait for tomorrow.” No one was actually hurt in the making of the photographs and video (all the injuries you see were created with makeup), and the video is simply one that takes advantage of an online fad/meme to make a powerful point.

The Second topic that I would be interested in looking at would be landscapes. I quite like the simplicity within the images and the geometrical lanes and shapes within the images are quite fascinating and i feel like i could produce/replicate something similar. Jersey is quite known for its spectacular sunsets, however I like how these images are in black and white emphasising the fact that even though the pink and blue skies aren’y visible, it’s still breathtaking.

https://www.lensculture.com/articles/yvonne-boyd-rise-and-fall

4a575a217ce5b74910fe610122a31fbb-large.jpg

Lastly, the third topic I find interesting is this idea of reflections. I like this concept, and what is the truth in reflections? This has spiked an interest from me and i plan on experimenting this idea with inspiration from Lee Friedlander. I find his work particularly interesting as he creates imagery with a sense of abstraction, and I also find quite interesting how he decided to include himself in someway , shape or form. This could be something to apply when experimenting with this idea.

It fascinates me that there is a variety of feeling about what I do. I’m not a premeditative photographer. I see a picture and I make it. If I had a chance, I’d be out shooting all the time. You don’t have to go looking for pictures. The material is generous. You go out and the pictures are staring at you.”

Analysis and Research

When looking more in depth about the exam booklet, a lot of interesting concepts were addressed. Documentary photography and staged photography could be an interesting way to approach the exam theme and could be concluded in a way that uses representation as well as visual aesthetics to portray them. Focusing specifically on the Documentary aspect within photography, it could be interesting to conclude a project that documents something, whether it be documenting everyday life, to social media and more.

Documentary photography essentially follows a single topic or story, and is conducted in depth. By gaining a deeper understanding and connecting emotionally to particular stories of injustice, documentary photography can capture and sustain public attention, and mobilise people around pressing social and human rights issues. A lot of the time, documentary photography can be emotionally difficult, especially when documenting issues like War and famine. Frequently, the question of whether to help or just photograph what is happening are inquired to many documentary photographers. By putting the camera down and help in whatever situation is occurring, you might help a few people but in the end, there is not really much that they would be able to help with in an overall perspective. However, by photographing and documenting the situation, it’s broadcasting what is happening all over the world and is allowing the world to see what is really happening in the present day. It gives thousands of people the truth about the struggles that many are going through every single day, and is a way that makes people want to help. This way is probably  more effective in the fact that it’s bringing awareness to issues people don’t necessarily think about, and emphasises how far we still need to go to stop specific issues.

Why is documentary photography important to an open society?

By telling a story visually, it allows photographers to expose and highlight unseen and ignored realities, and thus is a way in which provides evidence to show people the negative occurrences taking place all over the world everyday, and exemplifies ways in which human rights are being violated. A photograph is such a powerful tool, it has the power to address and emphasise issues that aren’t gaining sufficient attraction and it also amplifies a diverse range of perspectives. By doing this, by producing one image that highlights authentic situations and struggles of life many people face, it brings awareness and encourages people to want to help bring social change.

How do photographers document difficult situations while also respecting the dignity of the people they portray?

Over a certain period of time, photographers build trust with those they are going to photograph and represent. They normally develop strong bonds and relationships with their subjects and by establishing their intentions and effectively engaging with the community and its people, they show a more  enthusiastic and authentic attitude towards the issue and build even more trust within the community.

By creating this bond with the community, it allows the photographers to acquire a deeper understanding which enables them to ignore generalisations and stereotypes. Furthermore, this bond between the photographer and the people means that  the photographer becomes more sensitive to the cultural and political context in which they work. Good Photographers document people or issues as a whole and do everything in their power that doesn’t risk the safety of those who have allowed him to capture their stories.

A photographer I found particular interest in is Christian Holst. I came across his work on the Open Society Foundation website and found that his work contextually and visually interesting. Here are a selection of his images:

20100602-holst-mw17-001-910.jpg

20100602-holst-mw17-003-910.jpg

20100602-holst-mw17-004-910.jpg

20100602-holst-mw17-008-910.jpg

This image produced by Holst is particularly interesting when observing and analysing certain elements within the frame. When focusing on concept and authenticity, it is evident to state that this subject in the image is a monk who is dressing himself in a bright red robe. This body of work that he has produced is entitled “Life Under the Military Regime of Burma” and when doing more research on this particular image, it was stated that there was a protest in 2007, and although the precise number of how many monks were killed are unknown, it was suggested that there were many deaths and that over 250 monks were imprisoned and sentenced(because of their political activism), some for up to 65 years because of their alleged participation in the protects. It is said that many monks have fled and are unlikely to return because of the current political situation.

This image is powerful due tho the fact that considering what has happened, there are still monks who openly practice and continue with everyday life.  When conducting a bit more general research about monks, I found that on average, they will study for 10-13 years before they are able to advance and be ordained as monks. The fact that this image shows a young and practicing monk perhaps suggests a refute attitude.

Over the Easter holidays, I plan on responding in depth about domestic violence. I feel that it is such a big issue and It’s quite  a personal matter as i know many people (friends and family) how have unfortunately been involved in a domestic situation, whether it be physical or mentally: each issue is just as bad as the other.

Research starting points:

  • http://www.donnaferrato.com/work …  http://www.iamunbeatable.com/the-archive/
  • lee friedlander reflection!!!!!!!!!- 1960’s self portrait – the museum of modern art – Friedlander

Photo shoot Idea:

Shoot No.1 – Domestic abuse is an issue all over the world, and  is definitely an issue that most people don’t realise happens even in the smallest of places .  I think it would be interesting to contact the Jersey refuge for women to see if it would be possible to talk to and maybe photography some of the women organisation their and learn more about their stories (and then represent their stories within a series of staged images). I’m very aware that these are tough situations and some women may not want to talk about it or be photographed, and that’s ok. I just plan on getting stories of a few women and hopefully portray their situations. I would love for them to be included photographically (by taking portraits of them) and I will contact them on Friday to ask permission to go and talk to these women. If I am able to access the organisation and are welcome to go and talk to some of the women, I will prepare questions to ask them and I will record everything (if that’s okay with them).

Shoot No.2: This shoot will consist of me staging images that represent the stories that some of the women have been through. I think that the combination of their quotes alongside the fact that these situations i’m photographing actually happened, give this authentic feel and will hopefully be emotive and powerful. For now, I plan on using someone as a subject to represent the role of the victim, however I feel as if representing the role of the perpetrator could be just as powerful in representing this evil and hunting nature.

Shoot No.3 : This shoot is sort of a back up plan, and is an experimentation in which I plan on looking into the idea of reflections through self-portraiture. I was highly inspired when looking at the work of Lee Friedlander and plan on creating images of my own that look visually similar to his own body of work. I find it particularly interesting when he incorporated elements of himself within his images, whether it be just a shadow or half of his face and so on. This shoot will be conducted by taking just a few images at first, to see if they look good visually, and to see if it is something i would want to base a whole project around.

Possible Idea

Something that i have thought about looking upon is the truth behind relationships, focusing more closely on the negative aspect, particularly looking at domestic abuse/violence. A lot of the time, it isn’t obvious or clear to know if someone is involved in an abusive relationship, and a lot of the time, the person/victim is very secretive and good at lying bout certain things in order to protect the abuser, either out of fear of loyalty. This idea could relate to the truth theme when considering the implications of truths being withheld and perhaps even misconstrued. Domestic abuse can either effect someone mentally, physically or even emotionally.

Some shocking things about domestic abuse includes facts that domestic violence:

-Leads to, on average, two women being murdered each week and 30 men per year

-Will affect 1 in 4 women  / 85% of victims are women

-Accounts for 16% of all violent crime however it is still the violent crime least likely to be reported to the police

-Boys who witness domestic violence as they are 2 times as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults

– Is the leading cause of injury to women – more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined

These are just a few shocking facts and there are many more. I think that it is an intense and emotional topic to approach however I feel as if it would be interesting to investigate further and create visual representations from.

Another thing that is easy to forget is the fact that she cases involve more people than just the abuser and the victim. Children are unfortunately highly effected when looking at domestic violence.

“And a heavy sadness filled my soul”

When researching more about domestic violence on youtube, I came across this powerful short video in which is seen through the eyes of a little girl. The first five minutes i find is quite powerful as it follows her thoughts and struggles of everyday life living with an abusive parent, and the rest of the video really stresses more about the after effect and shows this little girl with her baby brother move from home to home (in foster care) because of the situation she is in. This domestic violence representation though the eyes and thoughts of a child, a child who’s mother is victimised by domestic violence is truly shocking and it is very sad to think about how true many aspect of this video are.

This short video is really powerful in many aspects. Visually, it captures shocking and authentic moments that  occur regularly throughout homes that involve domestic violence, representing the unfortunate truth. Contextually, the story is probably one that has happened to many, however in this video, her thoughts and feelings that are voices over the clip are really powerful and reinforce the visual concept that is occurring. Children are often over looked when thinking about domestic violence cases however are often the most effected by it. This video definitely reinforces that fact and shows a little insight and representation into the negative impact of these cases.

TRUTH, FANTASY OR FICTION

Truth: The quality or state of being true. That which is true or in accordance with fact or reality. A fact or belief that is accepted as true. These were the dictionary definition when researching the word ‘truth’. These examples are good ways to define the word however I believe that this word can be interpreted in many other ways. Truth not only stands as an actual fact, but also stands as a representation of what we believe to be true. Our memories and opinions are very powerful and we all perceive things in different ways. Truth being one of them. Whether it be focusing on the truth of statistical facts or the truth we have heard or envisioned in our minds, both show the differentiation and associations we contemplate when representing the truth.

Fantasy: ‘The faculty or activity of imagining things, especially things that are impossible or improbable’. Imagination plays a huge part of representing fantasy. Using our imagination to create things that we could only dream of is an interesting way to explore this exam theme. Creating images that hold elements of a surreal yet authentic style could be visually aesthetic alongside representing a certain fantasy you would like to portray, whether it be a representation of re-occurring dreams/nightmares or a particular interesting (spiritual) figure.

Fiction: Invention or fabrication as opposed to fact. Literature in the form of prose, especially short stories and novels, that describes imaginary events and people. This theme could be a representation of a particular fantasy story you could portray, perhaps even in a twisted and revealing way. Fiction also is a theme in which imagination plays a big part of and.making things/objects seem bigger and brighter (and almost surreal) could be an interesting factor when approaching this title.

When getting a brief overview of this years exam themes, there were a few things In the exam booklet that I highlighted in which interested me. A few key points included:

-subconscious urge

-true representation of objects

-inner vision

-cultures … Aborigional, Inca, Aztec, Polynesian

-life, death

-discovery, astronomy, astrology

-mirrors, reflective surfaces, lights

-synagogues, churches, mosques, cathedrals

A few ideas that were branched out from these initial ideas included this idea of crime photography. The fact that the first thing that happens when you get arrested is that you get a mug shot taken of you and you have to get physical copies of fingerprints, which is done in order to clearly identify the suspect could be an interesting topic to investigate. Also focusing on generalised mugshots (like the ones in passports) could be interesting to look at because they are plain and boring. Focusing on the fact that if you create an image and deconstruct/erase specific elements within that image, at what point does it not become valid? It is still an image of a person, features are still noticeable. But is there/where is the truth in misrepresentation.

Another interesting idea to look further into is social media. How we create this sort of alter-ego and this exaggerated avatar ( insinuating positive connotations) to make us more lovable and popular, and the fact that social media creates identities/identities that  are controlled by us, suggesting the fact that this person we’ve created may or may not be completely true.

Furthermore, a possible aspect that I find fascination is the concept of childhood memories. Focusing particularly on the truth meanings (specifically focusing on the comparison of memories within different age groups). An example would be how we fabricate things when we are younger. We go into a building and see big things and bold colours, however, we grow up to discover that the building isn’t actually that big (we can touch the roof with our fingers) and the colours were just in fact plain and simple. Conducting a representation of this could be quite interesting to undertake.
