exhibition response

In response to the quintessence exhibition we have to:

Task 1:  Read the case study and think of at least 3 questions to ask and find answers to when we go on the visit.

Task 2:  answer the following questions:

  1. Write down the first thought about the exhibition that enters your head when you walk in?
  2. Look at the set of images on the wall. Find a set of image that you do and don’t like and write a short description about them.
  3. Using the exhibition text, note down artist name, title of works and nominated artists and consider the connections, influences and relationships between them.

Task 3: Conduct further independent research and write a 1000 work essay.

Task 4:  plan a photo shoot and make a set of images that respond to your chosen artists paring in your essay.

Photos for Picture Story

These are the pictures I have decided to use for my picture story. I feel that these were the best images from the weekend and they best represent the whole weekend, with a range of different images.

Shootingthescouts-1
Establishing shot of the camping conditions, which shows the ‘true scouting spiriti’ as scouts are thought of as always camping in tents etc.
Shootingthescouts-2
Environmental portrait showing the kind of weather, as well as the youth of the majority of the competitors. I feel this image really represents what it feels like to be sat there, preparing to shoot.
Shootingthescouts-7
This is a Person at work/establishing shot, except showing a group of people, rather than just one person, I really like this photo because it contrasts to a lot of the other images, which show mainly young people shooting, as these are all the adults and leaders, who also get given small opportunities to do some shooting as well. This image also the typical idea of gun culture. Grown men ‘playing around’ with guns, which although is a less common thing in England, and Jersey, is a very loud topic in places like America.
Shootingthescouts-3
A kind of Relationship shot showing the group from Jersey as Ii want to focus my story around Jersey scouts and experiences

Shootingthescouts-4
Observed portrait, showing the groups, with the adults demonstrating how to use the guns, and the younger people watching and listening.

Shootingthescouts-5
Person at work shot, again showing a young person shooting, although this is similar to the environmental portrait, they are also quite different and show different types of environments where the shooting takes place.
Shootingthescouts-6
This is one of the photos I am less likely to use, as its very similar to the observed portrait, although it shows some older people within the audience, and shows slightly more of the necks which represent scouting.
Shootingthescouts-8
This is another image which I am less likely to use, which is a fairly wide detail shot, but it shows the competition aspect of the weekend, and although we didn’t go to Bisley with the hopes of winning any of them, I still think it shows quite a big part of the weekend.

Photographing at Victoria College

For my next shoot I want to photograph areas of Victoria College, the secondary school my Granddad attended from 1932-38. My Granddad was a proud ‘Old Victorian’, and was a member of Dunlop House. During his time at Victoria College he was a member of the XI Football Team, and in the teams for Athletics, Cross Country, Cricket and Hockey. I attended Victoria College myself so this is a significant connection I share with my Grandfather. I hope to go to the college and photograph areas  which are significant to my Granddad, such as; the sports pavilion and football pitch, the great hall, the opening of the building, and the commemorative plaque of his name on the First XI Football Honours Board.

This will be a very good part of my project if it is possible. First of all I need permission from the headmaster, Mr. A. Watkins. I have emailed him to ask for permission.

This is the email I sent Mr. Watkins,

Dear Mr Watkins,
I am emailing you today to ask whether it would be possible to photograph some areas of Victoria College at some point at the end of this term or the beginning of the next.
I am currently doing an A-Level Photography project about my Grandfather, Arthur Maitland Le Feuvre (1921-84) (O.V. 1932-38). With your permission, I was hoping to  photograph some areas of the school with relevance to him which would help me with this project, for example; the sports pavilion and football pitch, the great hall, the opening of the building, and the commemorative plaque of his name on the First XI Football Honours Board.
I do not know if this is legally possible but thought I would check with you, and if it is to ask whether it is okay to do so.
I would be very grateful if you would be able to assist me with this. If you have any questions or require any extra information as to what the project is about, please feel free to email me back.
Thank you,
Kind Regards, Max Le Feuvre (O.V.).

Text for Picture Story

As i’m doing an article on scouting and the shooting competition we went to in October I thought I’d make up the kind of article we usually hear about when things happen in scouting. All quotes have been made up and whilst it may not be a proper article and is a little bit gibberish, it helps to make my picture stories look professional. I have written it as if it was a reporter writing it, rather than myself as I found that a lot easier to do. I will be making a Newspaper spread and a magazine spread so that I can experiment with both styles.

For the title of my piece, a couple people suggested I call it ‘Shooting the Scouts’ as its a bit funny, and also has two meanings, the first with the fact that its a shooting competition with the scouts, and the second, obviously not actually shooting scouts with a gun, but instead with my camera.

Shooting the Scouts

Scouting is a big part of Jersey life, especially with young people of the island. Trips away to do activities in foreign countries are memories that always stick in those young people minds.

Thats why the Jersey Explorer Scouts try to go on as many trips as they can, having had a group of young people come back from the

back from the World Scout Jamboreee in Japan in August, they took a group of 9 young people to a Scout Shooting competition in England.

“We think it’s very important for the young people within our organisation to get the best experiences they can” says Greg Ruellen, the leader who was in charge of these young people. “These experiences are crucial for young people as it allows them to become more independent and see life outside of Jersey”.The Jersey Scout Assosiation don’t currently have a shooting group, so in comparison to some of the cometitors, scouts who are part of a group who practice shooting on a regular basis, the Explorer scouts representing Jersey, most of whom have only practiced shooting once or twice, were very under-experienced  in comparison. Not that this bothered them in the slightest.

“None of us go with the aim to win anything, we have a Jersey trophy, which we give at the airport when we get back, for whoever did the best out of us, but we mainly just go because it’s a fun, social weekend, and we get to meet other scouts, explorers and leaders from other places, which is a big part of what scouting really is.” says Sammie Pitter (17), one of the Explorer  scouts who went to the shooting competition.

It’s clear to see that these experiences help to give these young people a sense of maturity and responsibility, and they also help to give the parents of these young people a weekend to themselves.

The Explorers also have some other exciting experiences for their young people in the future, with a trip to Italy next summer, and the hope of a trip to hike Kilimanjaro in 2017, these young people have a lot to look forward to, and a lot of great memories they’ll come out with at the end of it all. Not to mention the life long friends they’ll have made in the process. “We couldn’t do it without all the effort our leaders put it, and it so we feel its really important to thank them for everything”.

Danny Santos Research:

Danny Santos is a well know street photographer. He lives in Singapore where he captures daily shots of life.

Danny Santos – in the process of taking a strangers portrait

Santos works in many mediums of photography such as studio portraiture and street portraiture. He grew fascinated by strangers as he wanted to capture their different characters and personalities through the lens.

I was especially captivated by a series of images he took in the rain and he entitled it “Bad Weather”.

“I used to always stay at home whenever the rain comes in the weekends. Eventually, I realized how the rain always brings refreshingly interesting scenes on how people react with it. I have written an article about my thoughts and experiences on shooting in the rain.” – Danny Santos

Here are some of his images that caught my eye:

danny-santos-03 bad-weather-22-1024x680 slide_291416_2326102_free untitled

As a response to his photograph’s, I’d like to create my own set. I think that the people’s responses and facial expressions are great. It’s a great variety from sad and angry to happy and cheerful.

Specification:

Who?

I want to photograph random strangers that are walking down the street.

When?

I shall be taking these photographs during the afternoon so the lighting will be quite dim and dark. Since the clock has gone back the daylight available is scarce. Therefore I may have to use flash in order to see the people.

Where?

I’d like to take these pictures in a city environment as the bright lights and detailed backgrounds will add to the image. It also gives it that urban feel.

What?

I want to aim to get a minimum of 50 photographs so that I have a wide variety of shots to pick from. I want to make sure that I capture people facing the camera and that there are minimal shots of people’s backs.

My Documentary Spread – Magazine Layout:

The layout of the page is very important when presenting your photography. For our images we can apply them onto an A3 size of paper. Here’s a mood board of a few magazine spreads showcasing photography that i found:

1-Mosaic2mothers_day_photobook_7_webmagazine-layout-tiffany-ann7b-stylish-magazine-design

I have produced a two page spread that includes my favorite documentary outcomes. I’ve placed the pictures in a fairly varied layout. The photograph’s are all different sizes and dimensions. Accordingly, the angles at which I took them vary. I enlarged the image that I wanted as the main focus, because it intertwines the theme of ‘Family, Faith and Community’ in the best way.  All of the photographs are edited in some way or another. I included some very strong contrasts and vibrancy in them.

Here is my main picture:

DSC_0085 edit 2

This particular shot appears to be ‘layered photography’ due to the many subjects in one. In fact, no changes were made to the picture’s composition and nothing was moved.

Me and my family had just strolled to our car, that was parked in the church’s car park. As everyone was getting in the car, I took the opportunity to spontaneously take this.

I find it quite lucky that my friend was holding the booklet that we got given at our ‘Jersey Museum – 125 Hours’ visit:

fdgdh
“Your story, our history” booklet – Guidebook given to us at the Jersey Museum

I like how it shows the task booklet and gives a small detail about the photograph’s meaning. I believe that this manifests the theme of ‘community’, because it shows the assignment that our school was given to complete as a whole. Additionally the church in background adds depth whilst embodying the theme of ‘faith’. The girl in the picture is representative of the subject of ‘family’ in that I consider her to be my family.

I’ve tried out various designs in Photoshop as a form of ‘trial and error’ so that I could find the one design suited to illustrate my story.

Original layout:

Magazine spread - no text
Magazine spread – Original with no text

This was my initial magazine spread but i decided to alter it. I found that some of the images were out of context and didn’t relate to the overall subject.

Second layout:

magazine spread - 2nd try
Magazine spread – 2nd try with no text

For my second copy, I removed the picture on the bottom right-hand side as it was sort of an anomaly. I then moved some of the picture to create a balance. I aligned the photograph’s so that they would look more proportioned.

Third layout:

Magazine spread - 3rd copy
Magazine spread – 3rd copy

For my third alteration I expanded the titles so that they went across the top border of the A3 page. I wanted the writing to be spread out and aligned with the pictures.

Fourth layout:

sheet with photos 3rd try for the blog

This is my 4th try at the layout. I have added the text to go along with it and included some inspiring quotes associated with the subject I was doing. I also moved the two detail shots from the middle of the page to the top. This gives the layout more space for the writing and looks more balanced. Additionally, I altered the titles changing the color into purple. Purple is representative of imagination and individuality. ‘Impulsion Du Moment’ means ‘Spur-of-the-moment’ and this explains the whole spread, since I took the picture quite spontaneously as I wasn’t expecting to experience certain scenarios.

Photographs for the JEP Exhibition

These are the photographs I am entering into the JEP exhibition at the Jersey Museum. There will be Channel 103, Channel T.V and lots of members of the school at the event.

IMG_5961

This is one of the main photographs in my picture-story because it is a portraiture shot of my grandfather, there are not many images of him on his own. I think it shows off his personality massively, he was a very strong and brave individual who fought in the war and raised eight children. I like the texture of the image and how it looks old and vintage. There are creases through the middle of the photograph and it is slightly discoloured around the edges but I think this adds to its style.

IMG_5962

This is one of my favourite images from all the photographs from the albums, I think the the way the man is just sitting reading his paper makes everything look very casual and everyday. The black and white style is also representing the time period the photograph was taken in, as my grandfather did not have the money to afford photographs in colour.
