Tom Pope evaluation day

On Friday the 10th of July, we Met again with Tom Pope and the Team from the Jersey societe, We were asked to make a presentation showing our work from our ‘chance, change & Challenge’ project. This presentation had to include research, our idea’s, and our final out comes. Our group was a large group, therefor we split into two groups. In my group we had to meet the assessment criteria of;

  • uses a range of visual language skills
  • consistent command skills/technique
  • selection of final material is clear and consistent
  • skillful outcomes that show a consistent level of knowledge, skill and understanding
  • work that has a personal identity
  • final pieces are well constructed
  • Perceptive connections linking own work top sources

Flora, Meghan and I created a film which was running in the background which contained pictures from the trip to St Malo and the edited films. Whilst the slides were running behind us we were talking about our trip and about our idea’s. We decided to do this rather than a power point as we thought it took a  more creative approach- also giving the audience something interesting to look at.

After every presentation we had to fill out a feedback sheet which was returned to the group. In the majority of our feed back we got either ‘confident’ or ‘competent’, however our group didn’t present enough research to support our work therefor we got some ‘basic’s’ and ‘not present’s’

Here is a picture of our feed back sheets;feedback sheet

This is the slide of pictures and movies that we had playing in the background whilst we spoke.

Films from St Malo

During our trip to St Malo, I experimented with the use of film. I have never used the record setting on my camera before so it was a new experience for me. I found it very different, filming something, rather than photographing it- which is what I am used to. I filmed several activities throughout the day and then edited the clips I had collected on iMovie. I have also never used IMovie before, so it was a first experience for me. In all of these clips I have manipulated the sound and the colouring to make it look and sound how I wanted it too.

My First clip was from the begging of the day, where five members of our group lined up on the steps and passed a blown up ball up the steps and rolled it back down the middle of the steps when it had reached the top.

I really like this footage, because it is very simple yet I find it very enjoyable to watch. I really like the setting of the footage, as it was in a picturesque lane and is rich in detail, because it is made up of a sandy coloured bricks. Another thing that I like about this film is that there is public interruption involved it. I very much like that members of the public walk past our perfomance as I think it gives the footage a life like feel and makes it very realistic. If i was to improve one thing about this film, it would be to put this clip on a loop- so it repeats its self. Once i have figured out how to do this on iMovie I will re edit the clip and add a loop onto it.

The second film that I recorded in St Malo was based on the same steps as my first video. I simply filmed the feet of the people in from of me’s feet as they climbed up the stairs.

I think that this film, is again very simple and focus’ on the visual side of the clip, as I have cut all of the sounds out of the footage. I did this too make the viewer pay closer attention to the detail of the people walking up the steps. I would like to experiment with this clip by adding some music to the footage.

My third piece of footage from the St Malo trip was of the ‘Flower Giving’.  This was where Sian, gave out yellow roses to the public as she walked up the street. She gave these flowers out to people as a sign of friendship and happiness.

During this performance I was very interested in seeing how the public would react to the present of a flower from a random stranger. Some people accepted the flower with great appreciation however some people declined the present, and some people ignored Sian all together.

I really like this film as In comparison to my films 1 and 2, it has a lot of activity going on and is more exciting to watch. It also seems like a very good representative of St Malo’s town life as it includes things such as people walking in front of the camera and general noise from around the street.

My final film that I have edited from my St Malo trip is of the boy from the beach who was performing tricks on him tightrope.

I chose one short clip of the boy doing a backflip and duplicated the clip and reversed it. I think that is an interesting way of editing the clip and makes it more interesting to watch.

TOM POPE STUDY

Born in Bristol, UK in 1986 Tom Pope’s artistic practice is primarily based within performed photography. Pope’s playful and whimsical approach orchestrates situations and performed gestures of social interaction. Within these settings the public become willing participators and collaborators where the act of taking photographs is a social event. Spontaneity is embraced and chance encouraged.

Tom pope study – paper aeroplane

In psychogeography, a dérive (French: “drift”) is an unplanned journey through a landscape, usually urban, on which the subtle aesthetic contours of the surrounding architecture and geography subconsciously direct the traveller’s, with the ultimate goal of encountering an entirely new and authentic experience.

In relation to tom pope, he made a paper aeroplane, and visited a gallery. a typically quiet and classy place. Tom then threw the aeroplane across the room and went to wherever it landed and looked at the closest piece of art to its landing.

Chance, Change and Challenge

When starting our first topic for the A2 course we were given the title ‘Chance, Change and Challenge’. I think that this is a very fitting title for this section of our course work. I think this because we are being encouraged to change from our usual photographing way’s and to experiment with the use of film, and the interaction with the public. This is very different from our work from our AS photography work- as we were doing more traditional photography in a studio.

We are challenging ourselves to take part in different activities in the middle of a public place to gain a reaction from the public. These activities were encourages to be outside of the box and against social norm. An example of this was whilst we were in St Malo, we bought a large rug that we laid out in the middle of the main square of restaurants and sat on it and meditated. Doing something which is very different in a public space can be seen as a scary experience because of the fear of what other people will think.

The chance from ‘Chance, Change and challenge’ means to me that we should give changing our way of photography a chance, whether that is changing the manual functions of the camera, or what we decide to photograph, or what format we decide to capture our photography in (Film, photographs ect). By giving the element of ‘change’ a change, may befit out work and produce something amazing. Or it may produce something rubbish yet help us develop as a photographer.

St Malo – My Responses to Tom Pope

My view on Tom Pope’s work

I like Tom Pope’s style of work very much because he is an extremely creative, original and in many cases revolutionary artist whose varied approach to photography and it’s meaning provides a refreshing stance against the more ordinary, formal, and aesthetically conscious stance typically embodied with most traditional art. I am drawn to Tom’s rebellious stance, especially through the way in which he uses this rebellion to observantly challenge society, directing such a meas in a constructive and interesting manner. Tom use of subtly to draw out sophisticated meaning, such as challenging the concept of personal space within society through seemingly minor and lightly disruptive actions which at most can be viewed comically.

During our St Malo trip last Wednesday, I decided to use the influences that I have gained from studying the work of Tom Pope. The themes that I have taken influence from include; subversion, satire and performance photography.

Photo 1

Game 1

This photograph was taken at lunch time of a few of my friends playing a spontaneous game that involved the participants battling to catch the tennis ball first. I have captured an event involving two people playing the game actively battling for the tennis ball, whilst a third subject stands passively by, observing with apparent fascination, supported by three further intrigued bystanders in the background. This photography relates mainly to the idea of chance because I have captured a specific spontaneous moment which occurred meerly through luck and coincidence.

The meaning that I attempted to explore behind this image is to show how a simple and minor act is capable of nevertheless creating a spectacle of awe and fascination. In this image a single act of two people battling for a tennis ball is witnessed with great fascination. The movement and sense of liveliness displayed with the two performers is juxtaposed dramatically with the sense of calm and stillness from the spectators. This image shows how performance in society act as spectacle’s by which bystanders are almost compelled to witness. Subsequently the nature of this image directly questions the right to anonymity. There was/is absolutely nothing to prevent any individual from not observing that moment, which makes the action of the two performers therefore open directly to scrutiny and judgement.

This image also questions who really gains an accurate account from an experience from an action – the subjective performer who was directly associated with the performer or the objective witness, who experiences a more indirect and whole event? As the photographer of this event I find this concept fascinating because, I objectively witnessed the event whilst subjectively performing at the same time.  It is difficult to say whether this image an objective account of my own witnessing to this event, or it it a subjective account to my performance of taking a photo, which is fundamentally unreliable due to the specific nature of my perspective, timing  and bias.

Reaction

In this image I captured the reaction of a member of the public with a performance of a girl from our group occurred (she was wrapped up in bubble-wrap and rolled down a hill!). The subject of this image was an ordinary bystander to the event. The subject recognised the events peculiar nature but did not however react very evidently to the occurrence, simply giving a brief, half-intrigued glance. What is effective about this image is the subtly behind it. The individual has just witnessed and extremely subversive and peculiar event but however the reaction does not directly reflect this. This photograph explores the theme of change

This observation therefore shows how an individuals reaction can in many cases be deceptive, diificult as this example shows to judge the true nature of what caused the reaction. Furthermore this begins to challenge the perspective of the viewer, who would most likely be drawn to perceive the event witnessed by the subject to be simply an ordinary and normal one, which however it certainly was not.  This therefore questions the viewers quickness to assume the nature of the photograph, without any provable evidence.

This image relates well to the theme of change because it shows how individuals behaviour will be affected  by the nature of the environment. The formality of this setting has caused the subject to give only a subtle response in relation to an unusial situation. This reaction may however have changed should the situation have been more private and open to expression.

1984

This photo is a depiction of the slogan ‘1984’ by George Orwell. I find that this image is very effective because it is visually bold and powerful. There is a sense of conflict (challenge) with this image, due to the fact that a direct point is made to an ambiguous meaning.

The simplistic nature of this image I find works very well because it sends a clear message to the viewer. I have made no attempt to make the writing precise and artistic. I find that this works well because it highlights the spontaneity of the performance, at gives it the protest a realistic feel, literally as if anyone could make a similar protest which challenges society. When making this protest I took influence from Tom Pope’s ‘Weak Anarchy’ series. This protest does not promote any radical political idea but is instead a more subtle means of questioning society and life in general. The lack of specific intention I also find important because it makes the protest quite disorderly, therefore even more subversive.
