Jersey Evening Post: Museum Takeover Day

On Friday 20th November 2015 a small team of students went down to the Jersey Heritage Museum to get to work on creating a pop up exhibition entitled 125 Hours Through A Teenagers Lens. We all met at 9am and got into three teams, Creators; Kate, Max, Sophie and Layla, Designers; Heather, Ben, Katie and Georgia and the PR team being myself and Dylan. Each team got to work straight away on making decisions and coming up with plans. As part of the PR team we were took over Jersey Heritage Twitter and Instagram for the day and were given two of Heritage’s iPad’s to use throughout the day. Here we made loads of posts updating locals and followers on what was going on and how everything was going. This was a really fun process and we managed to make a load of great Instagram posts and Twitter updates. We were even retweeted by the founders of the whole museum takeover across the UK on Twitter. Originally Channel Television, the JEP and the local Channel 103 Radio Broadcast were supposed to head down for interviews and live interactions but only Channel TV made it and they interviewed Kate, Heather, Dylan and Lucy. This was really interesting to see the behind the scenes of a news report and to see how many takes they have to do to get it just right with the cameraman actually being more in charge that the women in front of the camera which I found interesting.

I was given a separate task by the head of the entire exhibition Lucy Layton from Jersey Heritage to create a short film from throughout the day as well as making different documentary images. I am currently editing all of this together and think that I managed to get a great deal of shots throughout the day that will really work with the film that I am going to produce. This was also fun to be able to watch the entire exhibition unfold step-by-step and to basically just photograph as pure bare witness like a photojournalist would. This film will be posted onto the Heritage Facebook page. I was really able to get creative and tell the behind the scenes story of what went on throughout creating this exhibition.

Images In The Exhibition:

For the exhibition we were required to put in 3 to 5 images for the creation of 125 hours Through A Teenagers Lens. This was exciting to do as our work is going to be exhibited for locals across the island to see life through a young persons perspective. At first I was really unsure as to what images to post as I was thinking along the lines of only adding images of teenagers and their lives but then recently I have been focusing more on my sister and niece and how she is developing as a baby. I think that this is some of my best work and with the help of Toft I chose three images for the exhibition. I am happy with these images as I do think that they are some of my stronger images.

I like these images and think that they will work will with the strong colours to make the exhibition a bit more colourful as at the minute it is all black and white. However, I did make one black and white image which I think looks much better in black and white as in colour it just doesn’t look as good and doesn’t have the same effect. I think this images will work well and are interesting for the spectator to look at. I will make images at the exhibition when all of the images are exhibited. Through the selection process at the exhibition two of my images were chosen and those were the two that are in colour. Throughout the exhibition the design team came up with themes and mainly took one image from different individuals to create a new story. I think that this did work for most of it but found that the images themselves told mini stories yet they were taken out of context for this exhibition but it did work well and looked really great.

Toft and Mckinlay decided on the day that we are now going to create pop up exhibition at the end of every term wherever we can to create little exhibitions of all of year 12 and 13’s work that has been produced that term. I think this is a great idea and it will be fun to get the team back together to create more and this will give us a chance to get more creative and a wider understanding of what proper exhibitions are really like. We will be able to work on the presentation of all of our images as well as progressing each time to make the best possible exhibitions to represent the photographers themselves as well as Hautlieu.

Critique of the exhibition:

As PR and filmmaker on the day I was able to go around all parts of the team and be able to get a proper insight as to what everyone was doing and what went on. I found that everyone worked really well and there wasn’t one person not on task and working at their hardest. The only critique that I would give to the entire thing was that I thought that we should have had the photographers names and a little description under every set of images as that is what the JEP aspect of the exhibition lacked but we didn’t seem to make up for that. In the future I think we will add the photographers names but this time round we were just finding our feet and the creators were so busy with creating different parts of the exhibition coming up with an introduction as well as setting everything up. Also, I think that next time we should start preparing before hand just so it looks more professional and put together in terms of having photographers names etc. Overall, I am really proud of what we managed to achieve and even though the exhibition was quite small I think that it all went really well and everyone did a really great job.

With these images that I took throughout the day I wanted to create more documentary style behind the scenes images to make it interesting for the spectator to see. I really wanted to get a behind the scenes visual of the entire event and the day. This is shots that I made in between filming different behind the scenes shots. I found this a really fun shoot as for the entire day I was able to take the time to make images and to film. This made it so much easier without having anything else to worry about throughout the day.

Above are some behind the scenes images of students getting interview by ITV, this will be broadcast either Monday 23d or Tuesday 24th. This was really interesting and funny to watch as they worked well under pressure and came out with some good answers which will be on the news. They asked to speak with a member of the curators team, design team and the PR team to get a rounded opinion from at least one person from each aspect of the project. When watching behind the scenes I noticed how the cameraman actually staged a fair bit of what he filmed with the design team having to mess up and put together the sign in a couple of takes for the cameraman to have extra footage for their news article.

museum takeover day-1516This is one of my favourite images from the exhibition as it is so interesting and was inspired by Claude Cahun. I just really like the expression on the subjects face and the way she is looking away from the camera as if she cannot stare the spectator in the eye. I love the dramatic makeup and think that the wig also works really well. A lot of the images were really great and it was interesting to see a lot of work that the year 12’s have managed to produce. The wire that is sort of in the way of that image is actually what we used to hang the poles up which the images are hanging on kind of like a washing line. Something that this also reminds me of is something you would expect to see in  a dark room when the images are  being hung out to dry. I really like this idea as it makes it easier for us as students to put all of the images up instead of having to mount everything on foam board and adding a load of extra little bits.

museum takeover day-1450This is just an action shot of everyone busy at work. Layla and Sophie were busy writing down the names of all of the photographers that made it to the exhibition, Kate, Dylan and Max were putting the clips onto the images to put up onto the poles. In the background the ITV cameraman was getting some extra footage for the news coverage which will be shown this week. I really like this image as there is a lot going on and really shows what everyone was actually doing throughout the day. It was hard work getting everything ready and as well as filming and making images I did help to set things up as well as stick to Jersey Heritage Instagram and Twitter.

museum takeover day-1190I like this image. This is one from the beginning of the day with the curator team making decisions about which images were going to be included in the exhibition. Here Kate, Layla, Sophie and Max are working together to come up with the best decision as to where the images would fit in and how they would look in this particular exhibition. This was interesting to watch and see how decisive everyone was when making decisions. The team needed to make quick decisions as there was limited time to go out to the printing place to get them done in time for half 4 when the exhibition would be open for a private viewing. I like this shot as I managed to get the team perfectly in the middle of the frame and they all seemed to be posing in a great way for the camera even though none of the images that I made of the day were staged at all. I like that everyone looks deep in thought showing that they really did try their best with making the correct decisions for what looked well and fit in with the themes that they came up with. None of the elimination process was personal as they even got rid of some of their own images as they didn’t fit in with what they were looking for on the day. All of the images that were chosen were great and I think that the main theme of the entire thing was to see the life of a teenager. I think that they interpreted the title in a different way to what I thought as they mainly wanted to focus on being a teenager and not really life through a teenagers lens. They did tend to focus on one aspect of teenage life with being young, having fun, drinking and smoking and skating etc. However, they did manage to add a few images from a different aspect of being a teenager through family.

PR work:

Throughout the day the PR team [myself and Dylan] were given iPad’s to make posts and updates across the Heritage social media. We managed to gain them around 15 followers on Instagram and a few extra followers on Twitter. We got retweeted twice on Twitter by the official museum takeover page from across the UK as well as some retweets and favourites from locals. This was an exciting process as we were able to experience what marketing would actually be like and how we can get the public excited about the entire exhibition. This will be good for in the future when we do more exhibitions. We used the hashtags: #takeoverday, #takeoverchallenge, #archisle, #hautlieu, #societejersiaise.

Instagram and Twitter Posts
Here are the posts that I made throughout the day on Twitter and Instagram. We worked together but made different posts of different parts of the day to make for some interesting content. I wanted to create a load of different Instagram posts which I did throughout and we tended to stay on the Instagram page more than the Twitter page as we wanted to make it as visual as possible since we were doing this as part of a photography project.

Short Film:

Throughout the day I made a short film for the Jersey Heritage Facebook page. This was a fun task and I managed to get a lot of footage from the entire day. It was nice to actually be behind the scenes and to film different bits that the spectator wouldn’t be able to see. It gives them more of an insight as to what actually goes on in the making of the exhibition. I wanted to make this short film as visually interesting as possible so throughout the day I made a load of B roll for when it came to editing it all together. I had a tough job ahead when I imported the footage to find out that I had made 156 videos. I got straight to work on creating a really great short film for the Jersey Heritage Facebook page as well as for school to keep. I found that the entire experience and day down at the museum really fun and interesting making it fun to look back on while editing all of the clips together. I wanted to get an interview with the organiser of the entire event from Jersey Heritage, Lucy Layton, to play over different shots from throughout the day. I thought that this would be more of an interesting way to present the entire day while also explaining what was going on at the same time.I decided to create two short films, one is a lot shorter and more suitable for a school assembly while the other is a lot longer and gives more behind the scenes access to the museum takeover day.

Description of short edition: This is a short behind the scenes film that I creating during Hautlieu school’s one day takeover at the Jersey museum. Here we created a pop up exhibition showcasing fellow students and our own photography work entitled ‘125 hours Through The Lens of a Teenager’ fitting in with the already posted exhibition from the Jersey Evening Post’s 125th year anniversary. Watch out for the extended edition where you will be able to see more behind the scenes footage and get more of an insight of what actually goes on behind the scenes of a small museum exhibition.

[EXTENDED VERSION COMING SOON]

Description of film: For this project I was asked to come up with a short film to showcase the time, effort and talents of the creatives at Hautlieu school. Here 10 students, including myself, were invited down to the Jersey museum where we came together with the Jersey Evening Post, Jersey Heritage, Archisle Societe Jersiaise and took over the museum as part of a UK wide #takeoverchallenge. This is an extended version on the behind the scenes look of what went in to creating this pop up exhibition as well as the time and effort put in. Enjoy.

Our pop up exhibition has been extended and will be open until Sunday 29th November 2015! This has been a really great opportunity for Hautlieu students which also resulted in a two page spread in the Jersey Evening Post as well as a featured article on their online site.

Magazine Picture Story Layout

I wanted to create a more interest set of picture stories that go more into a modern style magazine article as I find this style is becoming more popular and magazines are getting more and more graphic and visual. I want to use geometric shapes to make my picture story more interesting too and to make the images look cooler. I think I like the look of my professional/classic photographic style and will adapt my picture story layout to look sleek and professional too. I think that I prefer the style and layout of a magazine article but then again I am unsure whether or not my specific images will look right with this style, either way I am going to experiment and see how it goes.

Editing inspiration:

Title and text:
For my picture story I have found that my favourite title is ‘Keeping Up With The Baby because it is so true that as a parent you would be constantly running around and having to watch over your baby because they can get up to something the second you look away. I also like this as I took inspiration from the reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians which is a TV show that follows round a family through their everyday life and the use of the play on words that I did for mine basically shows how as a parent the only thing you’ll be able to keep up with is your child. For the text I have been changing it around each time and find the more times I change it the better it gets so for now I am still just experimenting with what I’m writing and keeping to the third person story/not making it sound like a blog post.

Experimentation 1

keeping up with the babay magazineblog so farI really do not like this layout as I find it just looks so cluttered and isn’t good enough. I am going to have to choose between colour and black and white because otherwise the images look too different to me and they kind of look like separate images and shoots rather than one big picture story. This is a lot more difficult than it looks as I just can’t seem to find a design that I actually like. I think the grey background also doesn’t look very good along with the grey triangles, it looks very basic and unprofessional. Through my next edit I will make it a lot better and work on which images I will be selecting to go into the magazine itself. I actually really dislike this layout and think that it looks majorly tacky and will have to have a rethink and make changes to make it a whole lot better.

More editing inspiration:

Experimentation 2

keeping up with the baby edit 1blog
First edit

This picture story was inspired by one of my inspiration images above titled Isolation’, I found that this one looked really great and wanted to give it a go myself. I do think that this is a strong image and works well with the text on the left hand side, however I do think that I need to use more images and possibly change the position of the text to make it look better and more like a traditional picture story rather than one that just has one image explaining the entire story. I do really like this image and think that it all works well but I am going to carry on experimenting with this one and possibly some new designs to make the best picture story that I can.

keeping up with the baby edit 1 blog 2
Edit progression

I decided to carry on experimenting with this layout as I do think that it is an interesting one visually and looks a lot better for a magazine layout than any other ones that I have done previously. I think that I just need to focus on what I think looks good and makes sense to me rather than trying to follow a traditional template of what a newspaper photography article would look like. I added three more images down the right side of the double page spread as I thought it added more depth to the shoot and really works well with the title of Keeping Up With The Baby’ as there are plenty of images of the baby running and moving about and playing constantly. I do really like this edit as I think it is the best one that I have done so far. It isn’t visible in this post but I actually made a white boarder around the whole double page spread as this is what I have seen in my magazine style models.

Experimentation 3

keeping yp with the baby edit 2blogI actually really like this edit as well. I think that I was trying to hard to make my picture story fit into the idea of making it like a newspaper which didn’t really work out well for me. I definitely prefer the layout of a magazine as it is a lot more visually interesting and is a lot nicer to look at. I took inspiration for this layout from another of my magazine layouts as I thought it was really interesting. I prefer these layouts and think that it looks good in black and white as it allows the reader/spectator to focus in on the images and the writing instead of being constantly sidetracked or distracted by the different pops of colour within each individual image. I also find these particular images look better in black and white as they were taken inside and the lighting isn’t really amazing and the colours around the house are very neutral.

Experimentation 4

keepinh up with the baby edit 3blogI do like this edit although it is similar to the one above. I decided to make my key image one of my niece with her mouth open looking as if she is shouting and so I decided to duplicate this to make it look like an echo of her shouting, it represents the noise she was most likely making when this image was created. The text is the same as above and basically talks about life as a parent and how hectic it is. The three other images I chose reflect the title of my picture story with the one of the far right being my niece quickly running down the stairs as my sister is trying to jump down before her so she can watch out for her and try to keep up with her. The middle image is one of my niece in her nappy looking up at her dad with a dummy in her mouth. I thought that this image worked well within the picture story as it is interesting to look at and with her leg slightly elevated it looks as though she is ready to crawl away. The far left image is one of my niece drinking from the little medicine tube that my sister uses to give her any medicine that she needs, in reality it’s just sugary liquid. I do like this picture story as it is interesting and would make the reader want to read more and look at the images.

Experimentation 4

keeping u with the babt magazine layout article ideablogI decided to create another layout design for a magazine article. This one I added the page sides that you would usually find in the different sections of a magazine. I think that the text works well in the two columns and looks a lot better than just down one line. I also like that it looks as though my niece is looking up at the text too. I really like this background image as it is interesting and I like the position that my niece is sitting in. I do think that I need to work a bit more on this design and add images around the blank areas to create more of a story for the spectator to be able to look at. I think that this layout looks the most like a magazine article and I like how it looks so far. I think that I will continue editing to try and make it better and more interesting to look at.

keeping u with the babt magazine layout article ideablog2I really do not like this second design. I think that it just looks like a bit of a mess. The original edit of this page looks a lot better as it is simple and looks a whole lot more professional than this page that I have added to. I don’t like the way the images look as they aren’t all an equal shape, usually that would look fine but I just think that in this page it doesn’t look good at all. I also do not really like the box around the text but it does help the text and makes it easier to read and stand out a bit more. I do like the image in the bottom left hand corner as it kind of blends in with the background image and looks as though it is part of the same photograph a part from having the boarders around the rest of the image. I think that it does work well with this page and looks good with it.

keeping u with the babt magazine layout article ideabloggggggThis is my favourite layout out of the three in this experiment as I do like the boarder behind the text. I find this a whole lot better as the text is easier to read and stands out a bit more and I like that the focus is on the one image of my niece looking up innocently at the text. I prefer this image in black and white as it stands out more as the colour version is really dull as there aren’t that many colours at all to make the image interesting. This one does look the most like a magazine layout and I do think that it looks professional but I don’t think that I will want to use it for a final as it isn’t really a picture story and doesn’t stand out enough for me personally.

Reflection

I don’t really like working with a picture story that I’m not 100% with in the beginning and if I don’t think that I can make it any better then I will completely start over and create a new one. I just find this method a lot easier and more effective. I want to create the best picture stories that I can without making them look tacky at all and I want them to stand out and look professional. I came up with the title/headline of Keeping Up With The Baby and took inspiration from the reality TV program Keeping Up With The Kardashians where a camera crew follow the lives of one family. I thought that this was a good play on words and works well as my niece is always so manic and crawls around everywhere until she goes to bed. I came up with the caption by just writing generically about what being a parent is like and basically relating to my target audience of parents and how they would be able to relate to the text as well as the images as every parent tends to go through very similar kinds of things. Here is my caption‘Life as a first time mum can be difficult to say the least. You have no experiencebut the jobs still yours. Motherhood becomes a full-time job as well as your already hectic full-time job and keeping up with both can be a challenge. Don’t worry having a baby and a full-time job isn’t impossible. Becoming a parent can be the scariest and most exciting expeence of your entire life. You can have something that is totally unique and your own.The moment you hold that baby for the first time in your hands you make a neconnection and all the troubles and problems go away. Trying to keep up with your baby is a challenge but we have faith that you’ve got it covered and through the life of this baby, Bella Grace Evans, you will most likely be able to relate to every single image. Babies are often unpredictable and so are the things that they do. You never really know what a baby is going to do next, will they be running around chasing after a toy or lying down and taking a break. Sometimes the best thing you can do as a parent is just be there through all of those times and get to know your child and teach them through life.’  I didn’t really add separate captions to each of my images in the edits above as I thought that it looked better without as a magazine layout but for my newspaper articles I did add some captions underneath all of the images as it did look a lot better.

Developing a Picture Story

For this task I decided to use images of my niece. I think that this is my most interesting story so far and think that the other stories that I have are’t as developed as the ones of my niece. I’ve been experimenting with different images and wanted to create the best possible picture story for my shoots. I took a lot of inspiration from the newspaper article on the ‘Nurse Midwife’ by W. Eugene Smith.

Tips:
– write the text in third person
– talk as though you are a journalist
– add different sized images
– make sure images tell your story
– don’t make text like a blog post
– fontspace.com for differnt font types

Experiment 1

bella article page 1 blog

bella article page 2 blog
page 2

I am not too keen on this layout as I don’t think it looks very good and doesn’t really seem like much of a newspaper article. I think that with my next experiment I will try a different layout and change it around to make it more visually appealing. I do like the colours in my images and think that they stand out and look good as part of a newspaper article. I also think that the text can be improved a lot more.

Experiment 2

bella picture story idea 2blog

bella picture story ideablog
page 2

I prefer this layout to the first experiment as it looks well put together [compared to the other one] and was more inspired by the work of W. Eugene Smith with his paper article of Nurse Midwife. I made these images black and white to fit in more with my inspiration newspaper and I do think that it looks good. Through my next experiment I think that I will leave the images in colour and start to create a  text in columns and more suited to the newspaper style.

Experiment 3

keeping up with the babyblogHere is an unfinished experiment that I have done. I plotted where I wanted the text to go and have filled it in but not with the actual text that I am going to be writing. I do think that this experiment is more newspaper like but I think the images that I chose are too much as it looks as though there is way too much going on and the spectators eyes wont be able to direct to one part of the image, I feel like it is bombarded with different colours and images where a lot seems to be going on. I need to focus more on finding images that create on larger story and that work well together and compliment one another rather than images that feel cluttered and not very good.

Family Photographer: Nick Waplington

Nick Waplington is an artists and family photographer based in New York City and was born in 1965 in Sussex, United Kingdom. He went to study art at the West Sussex College of Art and Design in Worthing as well as studying at the Royal Acadamy of Art in London. His photographic work is usually amateur looking images of family, this interests me and I think that I can learn a lot from his work and the way that he photographs people.

About Waplington: http://www.claxtonprojects.com/books/nick-waplington/

Waplington’s website: http://nickwaplington.co.uk

Waplington’s Diary: http://nickwaplington.co.uk/diary

“I’ve never defined myself as a photographer. I make art” – Nick Waplington

“Photogragher Nick Waplington hit a creative high when he realised drugs were a waste of time” – Michael Fordham

Waplington mainly makes amateur style images to help portray his stories. His documentary style is almost like using a Polaroid camera or a disposable camera which is really interesting to me as they are quite artsy yet still seem to be of good quality. I like this style as it is different and stands out. Although I find his style interesting and unique for the images that I make I think that I want to keep to a higher quality style of images telling my story in a different way and relating more to Alain Laboile. I find that Waplington has a very unique and artsy style with weird unusual angles and amateur looking images. I find his work very interesting to look at as it is so different.

tumblr_mopnz8Kknz1sov71fo1_1280This is my favourite image of Waplinton’s as it is quite comical to look at. I find it really interesting to see the way the woman on the right side of the image is sat with her legs spread out as she slumps on the floor of the living room eating an ice cream with a blank facial expression on her face. I also like the way the woman on the left is sat as she looks very comfortable and they both look as though they are watching the television. This image doesn’t look staged at all to me and looks like a proper documentary image. I really like the entire composition of the image with the women not being totally in centre of the image and both being on either side of the image which allows the spectator to have a look at the whole of their surroundings. I like that this image is in colour as the spectator is able to see where the two women are and what kind of colours surround them. The colours are very yellow in this image which often connotes poverty or dirt as if they don’t have much money which is kind of evident with the entirety of the image showing how dirty the floor is and that one of the women is sat on the floor. Something that I really like about this image is the clothing that the women are wearing as it really interests me to see what fashion was like in the 80s and 90s. I like the colour of pink that the woman on the left is wearing as well as the, what looks like, undergarments or pyjamas that the woman on the right is wearing. I find that this image is very personal and was taken by Waplington as an insider to the family showing more of what an outsider photographer wouldn’t be able to do. This image really shows the behind the scenes of a working class family life and how they relax. I do however think that this family isn’t very clean and the house looks really dirty and as if they are less than working class and possibly living off of benefits or they are just jobless.

43bfb8edf94a2a3742ae910095c4e8b9I find this image hilarious as the little boy reminds me of the images that I have made of my niece smiling into the camera and interacting with the person behind the camera. I like that the children are all just stood around waiting for their mum to wake up. I find it hilarious how the woman is sat asleep really showing the struggles of parenthood and constantly being on the move to keep up with the children. Something that took me a bit longer to notice was that what I thought was a male with a beard was actually a female being held up by a man wearing a black hat sat on the arm of the chair. I think that this is down to the exposure of this image which just adds to the amateur of the entire shoot. I do think that the composition of this image is interesting as Waplington was able to capture everyone at a really great angle, with one of the young girls looking at her hands very bored while the girl right in the background of this image looks as if she is trying to capture the attention of the person holding up the woman. I just love the cute little smile on the boys face as he looks happy and as if he is looking off the camera and at Waplington himself.

waplington-living-room-2-2I find this image very interesting to look at. It just looks like a typical family photograph of a regular family dealing with everyday quarrels and laughs. I don’t actually like this image that much as it doesn’t really do much for me as everyone is kind of everywhere and the composition doesn’t particularly appeal to me, I don’t find it very visually pleasing. I do however like the left part of the image where the woman is mid punch/push to the man that is half out of the frame. I find this the most interesting part of the image as it has a story to it but the rest of it is just random to me. I think that this image is definitely capturing a more amateur style photograph as it does just look like an image that a family member made at random on their disposable camera. I do think that Waplington has much better work that this particular image. I think that this image would have looked a lot better in Waplinton was looking up at the family from a low angle as it would have made everyone look a lot bigger and made for a much more interesting photograph.

Creating Your Own Picture Story

How to: Design a picture story using PhotoShop –

making a picture sotry

bella grace
editing progress [title + caption needed]
  • For these images make sure that your design is right to the edge and once you have finished you can then make a board round the outside. Your eyes are ALWAYS drawn to the right side of the image first as it is right there as soon as you open the page so here is usually where you will put your largest establishing shot image. You will also need to come up with a title and a small caption explaining what the story is about. Now experimenting with your images and how you want them to look will be a lot easier.
  • save experiments as JPEG’s and put them on the blog
  • remember to use the ruler tool to create an even amount of spacing between each of the images
  • Ctrl + H hides the ruler tool for when you want to have a look at your picture story as it would look when printed

I have started to collect a few of my images together to create different picture stories, I haven’t found my favourite images yet that really work well and portray the story well but I am experimenting with the different shoots that I have done to make the best format and layout for my final chosen picture stories.

Here are just two different experiments with the some of the images that I have produced. I am still working around with the different images and positions of the images to find my favourite ones. So far I have only experimented with two shoots and I am unsure which images look best and if they actually stand out or whether or not they contrast each other too much and are overpowering one another. I think that I will have a look at all of my shoots again and try to make a design where I have a portrait, establishing and possibly a person at work shot just so it is more spread out and it isn’t just the same type of images being created each time.

experimentation with different shoots

I don’t really like any of the experiments that I have produced as they aren’t complete and quite boring. I want to create a proper picture story that is interesting. I have gained inspiration from all of the newspaper articles that I’ve looked at and think that I want to create something similar to this as it is more interesting and I am able to get more images into the project rather than trying to squeeze in a load of images that don’t look right or are out of place.

For this little article I took inspiration from newspaper articles as I find them a lot more visually pleasing and exciting compared to the picture stories that I have created above. I think that this is a lot more interesting as well as the information giving the reader/spectator more of an insight of what life is like being a new mother with an active baby. I do love these images and think they are interesting to look at with all of the bright colours surrounding the environment. I like the sharpness of these images as it makes them a whole lot more interesting to look at and will make the spectator want to read on as they will be drawn to the bright colours in the front cover image.

Creating Picture Stories

There are common elements to picture stories including; title, headline as well a writing captions and headings within your piece. One of the most well-known picture stories is one created by Eugene Smith titled Country Doctor. Nowadays, newspapers are becoming less and less and are faced with competition through the internet, film and cinema. Photographers now have to compete with the media world. The oldest and most well known photographic company is Magnum Photos, often if a photographer is on Magnum they’ve made it in the photographic world.

Deconstructing a Picture Story

  • every photographer sees things differently so there is no right or wrong was of making your own picture story
  • there is no set way that a picture story is made

Recurring images
These are the most generic/common images that you would expect to see in a picture story

who is the person? What are they doing? How are they doing it? In what context are they doing it [different shot types/lens’ that the photographer uses telephoto lens – creates a narrow depth of field, wide angle lens. The environment that they are in]

  • person at work
    – this is simply making an image of a person in the work place and in their own working environment
  • relationship shot
    – what is the nature of someones relationship with someone/something? These type of image tends to have more than one person in it showing the relationship between the two subjects in the photograph
  • detail shot
    – gives more layers to the picture story and is often a close up of the little details within the environment that the photographer is in
  • establishing shot
    – this is the largest and most important image. It gives context and tells the spectator what is going on so they have a clear understanding with looking at the very first image. It sets the scene and the mood for the rest of the images within the picture story. These images usually have a strong focal point to draw the spectators attention to exactly what the photographer wants them to see
  • portraits
    – this image is the basic image of a person to show who is being photographed as well as the other shots setting up the environment and the atmosphere of where they are.
  • environmental shot
    – this is the shot that gives the spectator an insight to where the subject is and their surroundings

Family Photography: Alain Laboile

Alain Laboile is a French family photographer born in Bordeaux, France 1968. He is a father of six and uses his family as his subjects when photographing. In 2004 Laboile put together a portfolio of his work as a sculptor, this is where he picked up a camera and developed a taste for photography. A while after this Laboile pointed his camera onto his large family becoming his major subject. This is now what Laboile is known for, creating strong images of his family as well as being able to be at the heart of the family and documenting his children growing up. I like the concept of this because as a father he would be expected to go out and work but instead he is able to make stronger bonds with his children and be there for them whenever they need him as well as Laboile being able to do his photographic work which he is now known for.

Interview with Alain Laboile: http://www.all-about-photo.com/photographer.php?name=alain-laboile&id=528

I do like the work of Laboile as he simply makes images of his family when and wherever some good photo opportunities arrive. I think that his images look very professional and really capture some great family moments that can be quite similar to our own experiences and bring a sense of nostalgia to the spectators mind making them think more about the ups and downs of their own childhood as well as looking at Laboile’s photographs. I find these images very visually pleasing as each image is very crisp and clear allowing the spectator to see everything from a professional standard. These photos are really amazing with the composition and the entire mise-en-scene of the images especially from knowing that Laboile is a self-taught photographer and has only been photographing since 2004. He makes very strong and personal images showing not only the good side of being in a large family with lots of children but also the down side of having such a huge family where kids can fight etc. I do really like his work as it is so raw and real and is better than a usual family portrait kind of photo that spectators are used to seeing as he is an insider to the family and is part of the family so is able to use that to his advantage making images at times of the day and places that an outsider photographer wouldn’t be able to make.

1c12c0857411f2142f75ab5988ac8109-largeI find this image really funny as the girls are all dressing up and messing around with what could be their mothers clothes. I think that this is a strong portrait as everything from the girl jumping in the air to the others standing and posing is so crisp and clear. I think the entire mise-en-scene of this image is perfect as the spectator is able to see their surrounding area and what kind of house they live in [seems like an old-fashioned house] as well as the facial expressions of the girls being really strong with the girl on the far left looking directly into the camera with a very serious facial expression while the girl in the back far right is posing similarly to her sister and looking off into the distance. I like the way that none of them are actually smiling or laughing as if they are very serious about dressing up in random outfits. It does look as though the girls were having a lot of fun dressing up and running round in their mums clothing. I do think that this image looks great and it being in black and white, for me, makes it a much stronger image as the spectator isn’t distracted by the colours of the light coming through or the colours of the clothes that those girls are wearing. Overall I think that this is a really strong image and is interesting to look at.

3a61400834ebf9bd122654aef12e30ed-largeThis is one of my favourite images because it is so simple. I like that Laboile caught one of his daughters walking along the patio of their house. I like that this photograph is taken from a more of a low angle as Laboile would most likely have been on his knees or leaning down low to make this image. This makes the patio balcony look a lot larger making the girl look smaller. The composition of this photograph is great as the spectator is directly drawn to the slight right of the image looking at the young girl. I also like what the little girl is wearing as her wellie boots suggest that she has been out in the muddy garden [shown in some of Laboile’s other images] as well as the back of her shirt looking wet as if she had been in a water/mud fight. I like that Laboile makes all of his images in black and white bringing across a theme as well as consistency of editing in the same style. This image is interesting and brings happy memories as it reminds the spectator of their youth and being younger with no cares or worries at all, we never even worried about getting our clothes muddy or dirty.

adeb70a9381d2ba40af65d014f2f11f6-largeI love that in a lot of Laboile’s images his children look like they are having the time of their lives and seem like such free spirits. I chose this image as I think that it really does show how free and comfortable these children are. It brings some nostalgia to the spectator bringing back memories of when they were younger and never had any cares and would just run around naked. I like the moment that Laboile has captured in this image, he has caught them laughing and having fun while throwing water from their wellies at one another. It seems extremely muddy where they are as the spectator is able to see the bottom left corner where the child’s foot is slipping. I find it hilarious that we only see one of the children laughing and having a good time while the other is too busy  trying to defend herself with the water right in her face as he wellie is lowered and the water is just tipping onto the muddy ground. It also looks as though there are more than just two of them having a water fight as in the right hand middle corner there is water about to catch the young girl on the back suggesting that there are more people involved. I think that this is a very strong image as it is very clear and easy to look at. It is more of a fun environmental image showing what ordinary children tend to get up to in their free time.

My [Extra] Shoot: Family Photography continued…

About a month ago I photographed my niece and family on her first birthday, since then I have made many images of random days when she has been coming along to the house as well as going to visit her at her own home. I think that this is really interesting to see how she interacts with different people as well as the relationship with me being behind the camera. I wanted to create a more realistic portrayal of life with a baby and so wanted to make images whenever possible instead of waiting for a specific event or something to happen. This gives the spectator more opportunity to see into the life of a new family and first time parents. I wanted to be able to create more of a story with this shoot and be able to bring across an actual day in the life of first time parents and their child. I did make photographs of my niece when she was first born back in AS photography and think that I will look back at these images and compare them to the new ones I have made to reflect on how much has changed and how my my niece has grown in the space of just one year.

I have decided to put all of the baby shoots into one post as they aren’t the best images and there aren’t really very many so there wouldn’t be enough for it to actually make it to more than one post. I also think this is a better idea as I am able to keep track of all of the images easily as they are right next to each other and on the same post. I think that my strongest shoot so far has been Bella’s first birthday party as it was outside and I managed to get the aperture and settings on my camera to create some really crisp and clear images. I think that there was always so much going on in those images and are more interesting for spectators to look at however I do want the spectator to get an insight of everyday life with a baby rather than just one day when everyone has come together to celebrate and be there for my niece. I think that I will keep going with this and get my camera out whenever I can as there is so much that I could tell in a story for this or even for the photo books that we will be creating to tell a story. I defiantly want to photograph around Christmas time and on Christmas Day as well because it is always a good time for family to come together and to appreciate everyone and everything that we have.  I think that this will be exciting for my niece as well as it will be her second Christmas but most likely the first one that she will be able to actually be a part of as last year she was only 3 months old and couldn’t really do much. I am excited to document the growth of my niece as well and to see how quickly they really do develop and begin to understand things more. I really want to capture different moments within ordinary days as well and to document the little things that she really does understand and points out to us.

1st Mini Shoot

When looking through the images of this shoot I didn’t really think that any of them were strong enough images. I do like these images as my niece does look really cute but they seem to be more generic baby photos rather than more documentary style photos of her interacting with her family and different people. I did find that throughout a lot of the photographs my niece tends to interact a lot with the camera as she crawls up to it to grab it and play with me. I think it is interesting to see the way she responds to the camera and how she is with me. I think that some of these images show more documentary style than others as my niece tends to be constantly crawling about and going mad, I often catch a family member interacting with her for a couple of seconds before she shoots off somewhere else. I think that these images are cute and I will keep them but most of them are more just generic baby photos rather than what I am trying to go for with more documentary style photographs.

IMG_8865blog

I really like this image purely because of the composition of it and how my niece is right in the centre of the frame. She looks really cute and almost as if she is posing and looking off into the distance. I know that it can look like a generic baby photo but I quite like it, the colours are strong and dark with the entire background of the image being her surroundings at my house. In the corner of the door the spectator is able to see a shoe where my sister was standing but she moved out of frame because she didn’t want to be photographed. It can be quite hard to just whip out the camera at random times to make images of my niece and my family interacting with her as a lot of the time they don’t want to be photographed but obviously my niece and her mum [my sister] don’t mind her being photographed.

IMG_8858blog

I love this image! I really like the lighting of this image too as it makes everything seem quite orange toned as if the sun was shining that day. I love how my little niece is smiling and looking over at something as my sister is stood trying to entertain her. This is a better documentary style photograph, which I want to stick to, as it shows other people interacting with her and their reactions to her being there. My mum is sat over on the left hand corner of the room probably having some lunch while my sister is playing with Bella. I just really like this image as it stands out from the others with there actually being other people in it a part from just my niece. I also want to experiment with making some images black and white to see if they are more effective than colour ones as sometimes the subject can get drowned in the amount of colour within the image.

IMG_8808blog

For some reason I love this photo even though half of my niece’s face is darkened out. I think that this is a strong image with my sister [Bella’s mum] sat outside in the background making sure that she is ok when crawling around all over the place. My niece looks quite cheeky in this image, smiling at the camera as if she is about to do something naughty. I really like this image because it is cute and even though it can be seen as more of a generic baby photo, I still really like it and think that there is more to it than that and raises questions in the spectators mind of what is going on in the image and what the baby is actually doing/going to do.

If I was going to create a set of images I would put these three together. I find them hilarious as my niece is basically performing for the camera and trying to grab it from me being cheeky and smiling. I think that these three images are very cute and uplifting. The image to the far left is so funny to me as my niece somehow managed to make herself look like someone taking a selfie on a drunken night out and it almost looks as if she is saying something to the camera, reminding me of drunk football supporters after a game. I don’t say that in a negative way because she does look so cute and it’s just funny to me that she makes all of these different facial expressions even at such a young age. I like the middle one as she really is interacting with the camera and could possibly translate as connecting with the spectator as she sees them and reacts to them when usually in documentary no one is acknowledging the camera and tends to shy away from it, with Bella being the complete opposite obviously. The far right one is so cute! She looks so cheeky when smiling into the camera with her two teeth on her top and bottom gums, it’s so strange how children can grow up so much within just one year and how much they seem to be able to develop in such a short amount of time.

Further experimentation

I like the look of these images in black and white as for me it makes them stand out a lot more and really allows the spectator to focus in on the subject rather than being distracted by all of the different colours in the subjects surrounding environment. They are interesting to look at and some of them are more documentary and more interesting to look at than others. I do think that some of these images are more generic baby photos, although they are slightly different in that they aren’t posed and the subject is just going about her everyday life.

IMG_88588blog

I like this image both in colour and black and white as it is more interesting than a lot of other photos that I made that day. This image brings in more of the environment surrounding my niece and who is surrounding her as well as seeing how different people react with her being around. My niece’s facial expression is cute and happy as my sister is entertaining her. I do like this image but nothing really strongly stands out to me and I don’t think that the images taken from this day are as good as I would usually create or photograph.

IMG_88388blogI really like this image as it shows my niece again pointing to something which she actually really loves to do. This has become a trend in the photographs that I have made of my niece that I like as it shows a little bit more about her character and what she will often do. She always points to things to show us something she finds interesting as she can’t communicate in any other way with us at the minute. Often my niece will use signs to communicate that my sister has taught her [she doesn’t know many but we get it]. I think this is a good image as it shows the back of my niece which is more of an uncommon photograph and the spectator is able to see what she is pointing out even if they are unable to figure out what it actually is. I like the position of this photograph too as my niece isn’t directly in the center, she is slightly off to the left of the frame. I like this as the spectator is able to see the environment surrounding her yet doesn’t give too much away as to who is there and looking out for her.

IMG_88622blogI chose this image because the spectator is able to see interaction with other people and not just my niece on her own. I like this image and I like making images of my niece this way. I always photograph her and cut off the adults so that the spectator cannot completely see them [when Bella is crawling on the floor]. I do this so that the spectator gets a feel of how small she is and how huge everyone and everything else must seem to her. I want to make everything around my niece look huge to show how little she actually is. I think this can make for some interesting photographs and they are quite unique in that I have gotten down to her level and basically sat on the floor to make images of her. I like this image because it is an action shot, with her mum [my sister] to the right smiling down at her while my niece is busy concentrating on trying to grab the bit of fabric off of the back of her little chair. I like this image in black and white as well as it makes it more effective and allows the spectator to maintain their focus on the subject rather than focusing on the distraction of all of the different colours surrounding her.

2nd Mini Shoot

This shoot was awful as I only managed to make one or two images of my niece when she came around on Friday 30th October in the evening to show us her halloween outfit. They weren’t there for long and I couldn’t manage to get the lighting right. My house is very orange as the lights all have an orange tint as well as there being a lot of red around my house making the images look already very orange plus my niece was wearing an orange tutu on the red carpet so she kind of blended in a bit. I think that this shoot was unsuccessful but I am going to add in the images just for a note for next time to actually make more photos and to fix the aperture etc before hand. I’m actually really disappointed with this shoot as I didn’t take many photos at all, I wasn’t actually going to make images that evening but wanted to as more of a documentation for my own personal family archive.

3rd Shoot

For this shoot I actually made quite a few images, a lot more than the other two shoots which I think makes up for the lack of shooting before hand. I do like these images as they are cute and it also shows more of the environment that my niece is constantly surrounded by everyday. On Thursday 5th November I went round to my sisters house to make photographs of Bella when she got home and see what she does on a normal day out. I think that this was a good idea as it shows a more personal side to their lives and what they do on an average day and not just on a day when an event is happening or when something exciting is going on. I enjoyed doing this shoot as my niece was excited to see me and I got to spend some more time with her as well as make images of her for my photography course as well as for a personal family archive and memories. I think that these images could have been better if there was more natural light but as this was the only time that I could go round and see my sister and niece that would have to do.

I didn’t actually realise how many images I made that evening so I only posted the ones that I chose to edit and that still managed to be a lot. I like these images but I don’t think that there is anything great about them as they are quite mediocre and the lighting really annoys me in most of the images. I think that I am going to experiment more with some black and white images to try and see if they look any better.

bella documentary-224I like this image as it looks like a proper documentary photo, as if I’ve asked my niece to make a photo of her looking directly into the camera with a neutral facial expression. I really like this image. In reality my niece was starting to get upset that I was photographing her instead of playing with her. I like the way I’ve captured this moment, with a little bit of the drawers showing as well as my sister in the background following my niece around to make sure she is ok. Something that was evident throughout these photos is that my niece does not stop moving. She is constantly running around and barriers don’t seem to phase her at all as she’ll just try and climb over them. I really do like this image and find it interesting. The composition of my niece is perfectly in the center of the image with the second thing that the spectator will look at being my sister in the background watching her. I also like that this image is taken from a low angle to get to the level that my niece is on, which is a theme in the photos of my niece because I want the spectator to feel like they are there too and watching and looking around as she would and see what she can see too.

bella documentary-162

I find this image really cute. Here my niece is playing for the camera and having fun. This image shows the cheeky side of my niece, with her laughing and posing/lying on the cushion. I find this image really interesting but it is more of a generic baby photo. I think that this would be interesting for a spectator to look at within a series of images rather than as a stand alone image as I don’t think that it is strong enough to be on its own and I don’t think that it really makes much sense on its own either but I picked it out because I thought it looked cute.

bella documentary-7I like this image as it is my niece asleep in the car after nursery. I like that the spectator is able to see my niece sleeping on one side of the image and also see the environment and her surroundings on the outside of the car through the reflection. I think that this image is very blue but that’s ok as I think that it gives off more of an atmosphere of what time of year it is, with it being autumn and getting colder. I do think that this image would benefit more in a series of images rather than having it as a stand alone image. I think that it would work well as the beginning image if I were to make this shoot alone into a small series.

I decided to create a set of three images to tell a mini story with the little details. For this set of images I chose to focus on when my sister was checking my nieces temperature. Here the spectator can see that my niece wasn’t enjoying it very much and would try to run away from it being in her ear for too long. It did result in her getting to drink some baby medicine [which she seems to love, probably because it is mainly sugary]. I like these images as a set as it shows the conflict between mother and daughter although her mum was ultimately trying to help her and check whether or not she had a high temperature. I find the far left image hilarious as she really did not want that thermometer being put in her ear although a few months earlier whenever my sister would do it she was never phased. I believe that these three images represent the harder side of parenting that adverts and people tend to leave out, they let you find that one out on your own.

I love these images! They are so cute and show interaction that my niece has with her mum and how they are together. I like looking at these images as a mini series as it shows the spectator step-by-step what is going on and it is interesting to see. I like how in the far left image my niece is watching her mum and wondering what she is doing, to then in the middle photo getting excited and taking the cover off of her face through to the far right image of my niece finding her mum and being so happy that she knew where she was. I think that these images are really cute and interesting for the spectator to see that relationship between mother and daughter as well as being able to see what they do on an average day without there being any kind of special event or anything in particular going on.

Further Experimentation

Everything looks better in black and white. Something that I noticed when editing was that I could make a good photograph look great and allow different elements of the photo stand out. I prefer these images just because they look better and seem well put together in comparison to some of the others that are only in colour. I did find that some of the images didn’t look good in black and white so I didn’t add them in as the colours within the image aren’t strong enough and nothing really stand out, it all seems to blend. When editing it seemed as though I didn’t change many of the images to black and white but I did manage to get quite a few.

Again I edited more images that I thought and have ended up with plenty to look through and experiment further with. I like making a lot of these images black and white as it allows the spectator to focus in on what the subject of the image is doing rather than being sidetracked or distracted by whatever is going on in the background and any bursts of colour. I like a lot of these images in black and white but not all of them work well like this, as stated previously, some of the colours in my images aren’t strong enough and wouldn’t really look all that great in black and white.

bella documentary-264

This image stands out to me as it shows how my niece is developing more and more each day with her knowledge of communication skills and being able to play and hide with her mother. I really like this image as the spectator is able to see my niece smiling up to her mum and playing along with her. I also like the expression on her mums face [my sister] as she is playing along and acting surprised as if she cannot see my niece. I think that this image really captures the communication skills that babies are able to pick up and develop without actually having to say anything. It interests me how babies are still able to understand and communicate things that they want without actually having to make any noise or even without directly speaking and telling her mum what she wants. I also think that the composition of this photograph is good as the two are opposite each other with no one being directly in the middle of the image. This image is a lot stronger in black and white as it allows the spectator to focus in on the subject rather than random background colours etc.

bella documentary-271

Another image that I think is strong is this one as it shows my sister giving my niece baby medicine to help with her temperature. I find it interesting to see how she reacts to different interactions with her mum. I think that I have captured this moment quite well and like the position that I have made this image in making my niece the main focus and subject of the image with her mum in the foreground adding more context to the image where the spectator is able to see what they are doing. I really like the facial expressions on the subjects faces as my niece and my sister both look concentrated on the medicine.

bella documentary-293

I really like this image. I like the way my niece is sitting with her leg slightly elevated off of the floor as she just sits in her nappy looking up at the dad. I think this shows how she looks up to her dad both physically and mentally [her dad wasn’t up for being in photos that evening]. I like that the spectator can only see what my niece sees and can’t actually see her dad or what is going on above the floor level. I think that my niece on the floor is really key and directs the spectators over to her first. I do think that this image is quite strong and could be a stand alone image as on its own it tells the story of how she sees her father. I also think that this image would not have been as effective if it was in colour as there isn’t really a main focal point that stands out as much as it does in black and white.

bella documentary-267This image is very simple. I like how my niece is holding the toy while grabbing hold of another toy and looking off in the distance of the camera. The composition of this image is good as my niece is slightly off center and her facial expression looks as if she is almost in a trance looking at something off camera that the spectator can only imagine what is going on. I think that this image works well in black and white allows the spectator to focus on the subject and her facial expression.

125 hours: Jersey Museum Takeover

On Friday 23rd October the whole of year 12 and 13 photography students headed down to the Jersey Art Museum where we were delivered an opportunity to get our creative work exhibited within the Jersey Museum. This was created to celebrate 125 years of the Jersey Evening Post [originally named Evening Post]. This would be a really great opportunity to get our work out there within the Jersey community as well as actually being a part of an exhibition.

Your Story, Our History: 125 years seen through a JEP lens”

The Jersey Archive only managed to find images from the past 85 years so it wasn’t really true to its name, however the images that I saw were really interesting. The reason why some of the photographs weren’t present was because during World War II the German Nazis took over Jersey and the JEP and so before the Germans took over the JEP the head of the JEP decided to burn all of the papers and images so that the German’s couldn’t get hold of them. This is really interesting as I wonder why this person wouldn’t want the German’s to see those images or papers even though they wouldn’t really be able to do anything with them unless they had important news about Britain and possible war moves. I find that although they were unable to bring images across the 125 years it still has huge impact and is really important in the growth of Jerseys history.

So for this exhibition our task is to make images through the lens of a teenager over 125 hours, as the Archive doesn’t really have images made by teenagers and we never really get a teens perspective on things. I think that this is a really great idea because often adults underestimate teens and think that all we ever do is cause trouble which is not the case. This really helps with the documentary aspect of our photography course as we are able to apply this to our own work and use it to our advantage. I want to be able to make the most realistic images that I possibly can by just carrying my camera around with me constantly and snapping shots at random [action shots]. This will be a fun experiment and I’ll be able to look back and see what I was doing at different moments throughout my week. Basically 125 hours amounts to 5 days and so we will be making photographs across a five day period. Another role that students are able to get into is actually creating the exhibition on the day. There will be 10 students selected from those who put their names down and here they will be split into teams of about 2 or 3 people, the curators, designers, PRs and documenters. Here we are going to be able to choose the best photographs from all the students, position them and decide how they are going to be placed in the exhibition space as well as filming and documenting the day through photographs. This will be a really great experience and a good chance to get our work out there. The deadline for this exhibition is Wednesday 18th November.

During the day we went down to the exhibition to check it out I was given the opportunity by Lucy Layton, from the JEP and head of the 125 hours project, to actually film throughout the day of the takeover as well as taking over their Facebook and Instagram page. I think that this will be really interesting to do and I want to be able to make a decent video for them as it is going to be posted on their website. Here I want to interview some people involved with the project including students involved. I will also be filming throughout the day of different decisions being made and possibly a time lapse of the entire day filmed with my GoPro. I am going to come up with some questions to ask during each of the mini interviews as well as filming different shots of the exhibition throughout the day as more behind the scenes stuff.

At first approach to the exhibition I thought ‘I hate the red’, for me the colour red is just awful but that is however just personal preference and I know that the red iconically represents the Jersey Evening Post. For some reason I just find that the colour red is so harsh and can be quite in-your-face at times but then again it did really compliment the black and white images making them stand out from the wall a lot more. I find that even the background of an exhibition matters so much because it can completely change the way the spectator sees and interprets the images being exhibited. I absolutely love that all of the images are in black and white, mainly because the time they were taken film cameras only shot in black and white but nonetheless I loved it. I find that this really allows the spectator to look into the image and the people within those images instead of being sidetracked by bursts of colour in different parts of each image. All of the images managed to compliment each other because they were all black and white they seemed to have a more equal chance of being looked at. I did find that the middle of the room was lacking something, which would make the perfect space for our additional new images that are selected for the archive as that was the intention. I was also drawn in at the very beginning just down to the right side of the exhibition as you walk in there is a glass case filled with some awesome vintage photographs and film cameras. The film cameras were so great, as I’m a lover of vintage cameras, it really brought the whole exhibition into perspective for me in that people actually used to use these to make photographs for the papers and looking around at the images they were all so amazing without any editing being done at all [aside from the built in factor of them being in black and white].

This is the first image that really stood out for me. I don’t have anything that I particularly like about this image accept I just love looking at it and it really comes together. It brings me a sense of nostalgia of when it snowed a couple of years back in Jersey and me and my friends from around my flats would constantly hang out and mess around in the snow. I think that this image will bring a sense of nostalgia to many people and those of all ages are able to relate to this in some way or another. The little boy sat in what looks like an old suitcase with a bit of string attached looks so happy and cute that his older friends/possibly siblings are pushing him along so that they can all enjoy the snow together. I really think that this photograph is cute and makes me happy, it is so simple and straight forward. Everyone in the photograph looks so happy. It makes me think about being younger and having no worries, being able to just do whatever I wanted and hang out and mess around with friends, even though I still kind of do that now. The composition of this image is great as the subjects are perfectly positioned with the same amount of space on either side of the image which I find so interesting as this would have been taken with a film camera where it becomes harder for the photographer to make such a perfect photograph as there was no such thing as adjustments and cropping then. I just love that this is an action shot and really makes me fall in love with the idea of documentary photography. This idea of taking action shots and film cameras makes me think of disposable cameras and when I was younger I used to use those disposable cameras to make images on different trips with my friends and family. I’ve actually started using them again because I love the idea of making images and then not being able to look at them until they’ve been developed, it’s much more fun to be able to collect them and finally get them and laugh and smile at all of the good times that we would usually overlook.

I think that this photo is great, I find it humorous. I find it almost comical that the photograph was taken from behind the men trying to push that old car through the countryside lanes around Jersey. I like that all of the men are facing away from the camera accept two of them, one turned round laughing [to the left] while the other seems to be smiling at the struggle they are having [to the right]. I find this image interesting as there is a lot to look at and I also find it quite funny that the men are wearing full suits when travelling round the countryside as if they were possibly businessmen or maybe that was just the fashion of the time. This image is entertaining and is open for interpretation to the spectators. I really don’t think that this image would have made it into the JEP because it isn’t really news but then again it is funny to look at and would put a smile on peoples faces. I find that most of the images being shown at the exhibition aren’t exactly the best images in terms of photojournalism and making headline Jersey news but I do think that they are great documentary images as they really do capture moments in time of Jersey history and the ordinary people of our small island. I find this interesting as I think I wonder what ever happened to those people and how old they are now and whether or not they are still alive.

Admittedly I hadn’t even come across this particular image until we were sharing our favourite photographs at the end of the session last Friday. Once it was pointed out to me it really made me start thinking about how even in Jersey women were seen as second-class citizens to their male counterparts. Everyone just looks so unhappy there as if it was an obligation to come from work on a friday and go down to the pub for a drink with their colleagues and their wives. In this image the women seem to be taking a step back and are always stood behind their husbands as if they aren’t as important as the men and are just there to look pretty and to socialise with the other wives. I find this image very sad and something that I just wouldn’t think would have happened in Jersey and I do not know why I thought that because Jersey is very backward in equal rights of all people, including only bringing in discrimination laws last year [2014] along with discrimination laws to protect characteristics of sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment & pregnancy and maternity only coming into the law on 1st September of this year [2015]. I should really expect these kinds of images from Jersey as they have always been quite backward in laws as well as equal rights for women [still not equality of payment in some working environments]. The chandelier in the background interests me as it seems as though this would have been a more upperclass establishment so the only people that would be there are businessmen and their wives. I think that this can be a very powerful image as it explains a lot without saying anything, in the position of the women and the expressions on everyones faces. It is interesting to see a small section behind the bar with drinks lined up underneath that really shows how different everything is now in terms of the way people dress and the different class of people that you will tend to see hanging around bars nowadays compared to back then.

My Shoot: The Detective and His Dame

For this shoot I decided to make some images of a Film Noir detective with a dame. I thought that this would be a good opportunity to take inspiration from the work of Claude Cahun and going against the socially accepted gender norms between men and women and I am also inspired by Cindy Sherman who dresses up as characters and becomes someone new in every photograph.

I did a shoot dressed up as a generic Film Noir male detective to look at how men are portrayed with this old style of film which also goes along with my work on femme fatales and making images of famous femme fatales and inspiration from Barbara Kruger and her newspaper style images. This shoot went well and I enjoyed doing it. I wanted to portray a man well and really become the character so I put bronzer all over my jawline and cheeks to create a beard. I also wore my dad’s grey suit jacket, tie, shirt and my own trousers and braces to go underneath the suit jacket. I wore a large black hat that is reminiscent of the hats that a usual detective in film noir movies would wear. I really wanted to become the character and portray them in the way that I had imagined. Later on I went back into the studio for a couple of hours to shoot the images for the female dame character. This went well and was fun to do. I managed to look back at the images made of the male detective and got them into the same position in order to make it a lot easier for me when actually editing the photos together. I do think that the images will look a lot smoother if they are in black and white which works well as my theme is Film Noir.

Here are a few of the images that I made of the film noir detective. I like these images as I think that I managed to capture the lighting well and really made some good film noir inspired images. I think that they will look a lot better when the noir dame is introduced and when I can actually edit them together by layering them. However, I do really like the look of these images alone as they are interesting to look at. I made an attempt to edit the two images together, one with the detective standing along side his dame but this didn’t really work as the lighting was different and the camera was at different focal points and slightly different positions. At least this way I am able to still use the images of the Noir Dame and create some more interesting Femme Fatale images and I will know for next time to actually do the shooting for one image all at one time and not to go on different days. This will just make it easier when editing and allow me to get really into the characters and the exact positions that I want to be in in each of the images.
I like these images and think that they are interesting to look at as they challenge the norms of gender and how people are supposed to look and be as part of that gender. I wanted to create strong images that are unusual and will leave the spectator wondering who I am and what decade I am from. This can be linked to more recent issues on gender stereotypes and having to conform to the expectations placed on us at a young age by society and to fit in with the norm and be another one in the crowd. I did take inspiration from Claude Cahun challenging how we see ourselves and showing that really we aren’t all that different at all. This was really fun and interesting to explore as it shows a new side to photography and allows me to work more deeply and think more deeply about these kind of situations of gender stereotypes and smudging the lines between what is male and what is female.
