Films from St Malo

During our trip to St Malo, I experimented with the use of film. I have never used the record setting on my camera before so it was a new experience for me. I found it very different, filming something, rather than photographing it- which is what I am used to. I filmed several activities throughout the day and then edited the clips I had collected on iMovie. I have also never used IMovie before, so it was a first experience for me. In all of these clips I have manipulated the sound and the colouring to make it look and sound how I wanted it too.

My First clip was from the begging of the day, where five members of our group lined up on the steps and passed a blown up ball up the steps and rolled it back down the middle of the steps when it had reached the top.

I really like this footage, because it is very simple yet I find it very enjoyable to watch. I really like the setting of the footage, as it was in a picturesque lane and is rich in detail, because it is made up of a sandy coloured bricks. Another thing that I like about this film is that there is public interruption involved it. I very much like that members of the public walk past our perfomance as I think it gives the footage a life like feel and makes it very realistic. If i was to improve one thing about this film, it would be to put this clip on a loop- so it repeats its self. Once i have figured out how to do this on iMovie I will re edit the clip and add a loop onto it.

The second film that I recorded in St Malo was based on the same steps as my first video. I simply filmed the feet of the people in from of me’s feet as they climbed up the stairs.

I think that this film, is again very simple and focus’ on the visual side of the clip, as I have cut all of the sounds out of the footage. I did this too make the viewer pay closer attention to the detail of the people walking up the steps. I would like to experiment with this clip by adding some music to the footage.

My third piece of footage from the St Malo trip was of the ‘Flower Giving’.  This was where Sian, gave out yellow roses to the public as she walked up the street. She gave these flowers out to people as a sign of friendship and happiness.

During this performance I was very interested in seeing how the public would react to the present of a flower from a random stranger. Some people accepted the flower with great appreciation however some people declined the present, and some people ignored Sian all together.

I really like this film as In comparison to my films 1 and 2, it has a lot of activity going on and is more exciting to watch. It also seems like a very good representative of St Malo’s town life as it includes things such as people walking in front of the camera and general noise from around the street.

My final film that I have edited from my St Malo trip is of the boy from the beach who was performing tricks on him tightrope.

I chose one short clip of the boy doing a backflip and duplicated the clip and reversed it. I think that is an interesting way of editing the clip and makes it more interesting to watch.

St Malo Finals

These are my finals that I have chosen to select to represent our trip to St Malo. I think these photo’s show that we had a lot of fun and did lots of activity’s around St Malo, to emphasis the happiness and the joyfulness of the day through the photo’s.I edited the photo’s by enhancing the saturation, making the photo’s more vibrant in colour.

This first photo was taken at a play ground we found in the center of St Malo where we played on the roundabout and swings.
I really like this photo because it is of the St Malo locals and they are all leaning out of their windows talking to each other.
We met some boys on the beach who had set up their own tight rope on the beach and were performing tricks. They let us have ago on the tight rope and take photo’s of them performing.

Whilst playing the game, bulldog on the beach with some American kids I took this photo of Mr McKinlay instructing everyone of what todo.
This is some of the members in my group on the Feresse wheel that we went on in our lunch break. I added an effect to this photo which made the colour slightly duller,I did this to make the photo look old to foreshadow that Feresse wheels were something that we went on when we were younger.
This photograph was taken during the ‘Flower Giving’ Sian gave a yellow rose to these old ladies who were very pleased and thankful.
This is another photograph from the ‘Flower Giving’ which was to, two young ladies that were on a lunch break. I really like this photo because you can see Sian walking away and the pleased look on her face. You can also see the lady holding the rose in her hand which matches the bunch of roses in Sian’s hand.

St Malo Photo’s

During the St Malo trip my small group completed a number of activities that we photographed and filmed. These photo’s are very happy photo’s that include a lot of energy and are a good representative of our activities from the day.

Here is a contact sheet contacting the photo’s I took from the day. The majority of these photo’s are from the afternoon session which we spent on the beach. On the beach we met two boy’s who had set up a tightrope, I asked if i could take some photo’s of what they were doing and them performing some tricks. I also had a go on the rope myself- which fits in with the theme of ‘Chance, change & Challenge’. We also played a big game of bulldog on the beach with some American people we met, whilst playing this game I also took photo’s   throughout the game.

The rest of the photo’s are from around the street’s of St Malo and photo’s captured during our experiments.

Psychogeography

When talking to Tom Pope he mentioned the word ‘Psychogeography’, as he used it in one of his shoots. He used it as a way of travelling around the Tate Modern. He made a paper aeroplane and flew it through the gallery, and where ever the paper aeroplane landed would be what piece of art he would look at. As well as experimenting with psychogeography, he was also doing this experiment to see what people’s reactions would be- as he was going against the social norms of how to travel round an art exhibition.

Psychogeography was created in 1955 by Guy Debord as “the study of the precise laws and specific effects of the geographical environment, consciously organized or not, on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.” Psychogeography is an approach to geography that emphasises playfulness and “drifting” around urban environments. It has links to the Situationist International.

One way of achieving psychogeorgraphy is using the wrong map to navigate your way around an area. I think the idea behind this method of geography, is to lead yourselves to places you may have never of been before, which may be someplace wonderful. It also gives the person an element of freedom and leaving the route to chance. I really like this idea of travelling around an area.

Meeting Tom Pope

The first time we met Tom Pope was at the Jersey Societe, This is when he talked about  his work and his interests. His interests that he injects into his work is; Humor, chance, repetition ect… After talking about this he took us to an outdoor space where we completed three task.

The Orange Task

We were paired up and were told to get an orange. We had to throw these oranges to one another, whilst holding the camera in the other hand and capturing the orange in the air. The steps to setting up for this task, was firstly setting the camera to the appropriate parameters. We also turned the flash on. Secondly we placed the orange on the floor and focused our camera onto the orange- we did this so the orange would be in focus in the photograph. Then finally we rapped the strap of the camera around the opposite hand to our throwing hand. These are the photos I got from this activity.

The Selfie Task

This task was also a pairs task and the aim of the game was to take picture of your partner but not let them take pictures of you. Here are my photographs from this task.

Choreographing

The third task we were asked to complete was where we gathered into groups of fives, and each one of us write down an action of a piece of paper. For example a cartwheel. We all had to complete all of these actions whilst taking a photograph at the same time. Here are some of the photo’s from this shoot.

I think that these three photoshoots were really helpful for me to have an insight into the type of photography we were needing to achieve on the St Malo trip. Even though the photographs were not of great quality, the purpose behind them shows the element of fun, and chance. I think that these shoots helped encourage my idea’s for the France trip, and helped make the France trip as successful as it was.

Planning St Malo

After listening to Tom Pope talk about his work at the Jersey Societe we were faced with the challenge of coming up with our own idea’s to create a piece of film in St Malo. I gathered into a small group where we brainstormed ideas of what we would like todo in St Malo. We agree’ed that we didn’t want to over plan as we needed it to have some spontaneity however we did decide on some ideas;

Buying a bunch on roses from a local supermarket and walking through the middle of town and handing out these roses to people as a kind gesture. I am looking forward to seeing the public’s reaction to this gesture, as it is something that we have no control over. I also really like the idea of getting the public to interact with our work as it creates excitement.

Another idea was to bring along the prop of an inflatable ball. With this prop a number of idea’s branched off of it. We would stand in the middle of a public space, for example out side of all of the restaurants and we would play catch with this ball. However we would pretend that the ball is really heavy. This game needs to include improvisation. I think some of the best work comes from improvisation as it creates something unexpected. From this game, action pictures can be captured of the people playing the game, and also picture’s of the public walking around us- and how they react to us playing this game in the middle of the street. Another idea from the ‘ball prop’ was the idea of letting the ball roll down the hill whilst someone runs after it, this is a very simple idea but in St Malo the flooring is all cobbled stones and the walls are man made, therefor the shot will be very rich in detail.

One other idea from our brainstorm was to bring a large blanket and lay it out in the middle of the street. On this blanket a couple of us would sit down and meditate. We would film the whole  setting up of the meditation area and the mediation. The camera would stay in the same position throughout the whole performance so it can capture the audience walking past an the audience’s reaction.

In our time in St Malo, whilst doing our original ideas I would also like to do the ideas that we think of spontaneously in St Malo, these ideas could include found objects or a scenery. My main interest in this project, is seeing the public’s reaction to our performances as I think this is a very naturalistic thing.

Chance, Change and Challenge

When starting our first topic for the A2 course we were given the title ‘Chance, Change and Challenge’. I think that this is a very fitting title for this section of our course work. I think this because we are being encouraged to change from our usual photographing way’s and to experiment with the use of film, and the interaction with the public. This is very different from our work from our AS photography work- as we were doing more traditional photography in a studio.

We are challenging ourselves to take part in different activities in the middle of a public place to gain a reaction from the public. These activities were encourages to be outside of the box and against social norm. An example of this was whilst we were in St Malo, we bought a large rug that we laid out in the middle of the main square of restaurants and sat on it and meditated. Doing something which is very different in a public space can be seen as a scary experience because of the fear of what other people will think.

The chance from ‘Chance, Change and challenge’ means to me that we should give changing our way of photography a chance, whether that is changing the manual functions of the camera, or what we decide to photograph, or what format we decide to capture our photography in (Film, photographs ect). By giving the element of ‘change’ a change, may befit out work and produce something amazing. Or it may produce something rubbish yet help us develop as a photographer.

Space Hijackers

After listening to Tom Pope talk about his work at the Jersey Societe, I went and researched the ‘Space HI-Jackers’ which is a group of protesters that Tom talked about during his talk. The Space Hijackers is a group originating in the United Kingdom that defines itself as;

“an international band of anarchitects who battle to save our streets, towns and cities from the evils of urban planners, architects, multinationals and other hoodlums”

This group has done several projects which is testing authority. For example the government made a law against drinking on the subway so the Space Hijackers gathered together, wearing coats and carrying suitcases (in disguise)  and all got onto the subway. When the train had started moving all of the space hijackers took their coats off to reveal their party clothes underneath and had alcohol and speakers in their suitcases- creating a party on the train. When they arrived at the next platform they all redressed and picked up all the litter and left the subway, like nothing had happened.

SpaceHijackers

After researching about the Space Hijackers, it got me thinking about people who do things against social norms, such as Jack Jones.  These people do things to gain a negative or positive reaction from the public for their own pleasure. This the type of things that we needed to do in our day trip to St Malo therefor we brain stormed idea’s within out group and came up with some idea’s to experiment with.

Tom Pope

Tom Pope is the performance photographer that visited us at the Jersey Societe. A performance photographer means that he makes films from social content, for example whilst working with Andrew Lacon (a famous sculptor) they created a man made stage in which the public needed to walk over to get into an art museum. This was held in the Hockney Gallery in London in 2010 and was called ‘Enter Right Exit Left’. Pope and Lacon did this to examine audience participation within the space installed.

This is the stage that Tom Pope and Andrew Lacon made in the Hockney Gallery

Tom studied photography in the arts in 2008 at Swanswa’s Metropolitan University then went on to do his masters at the Royal College of Art in 2011. During doing his masters he started to experiment with the idea of time through the use of film. His first project a video camera was set up on a tripod whilst Tom aimed an arrow from a bow and arrow towards the camera. The clip is 1.17 seconds long and ends with the arrow flying into the camera lens. This collection of work is called ‘Blinded By Amor’.

This is an image of the arrow which got targeted into the camera.

Another project of Tom Pope’s called ‘Kinsington Chalk’ whilst he was studying at the Royal Collage of Art was set up in the streets of Kensington and the video camera and tripod was set up on one side of the road facing this large black box which Tom was trying to write the numbers 1-60 in 60 seconds.
During the video, members of the public come up to Tom and question what he is doing and try to tell him what he is doing is unacceptable. Tom replied nothing to these people however when he was explaining his theory behind his project he explained that he was testing the social acceptance boundaries which run in a community, without breaking the Law. Tom said this project was inspired by ‘Eddris Khan’ who also tests Authority.

I really like Tom Pope’s work, as I believe that he injects creativity into it along side context. For example I really like the idea of going against social norms and pushing authority to gain a reaction from the public. There is an example of this in his project ‘Kensington Chalk’.

Whilst in St Malo I experienced gaining a reaction from the public whilst we gave out flowers to ‘randomers’ as a token of kindness. Most people’s reaction was hesitant yet very thankful- however some people refused the gesture. I thought this was very interesting to see a persons reaction, and concluded that most people reacted to the gesture in a similar way to how they saw a previous ‘flower receiver’ act. We captured images and video’s from this shoot.
