FAQ’s

  • Q: When is the deadline?
  • A: Friday 18th December
  • Q: Does the statement of intent get marked?
  • A: Yes it is marked out of 10.
  • Q: Is the statement about both of my products? ie the whole set brief?
  • A: Yes. It is a statement of intent about the whole of your set brief about how each product connects to the other.
  • Q: What is the word count for the statement of intent?
  • A: 500 words.
  • Q: Can I use my AS statement of intent for A2?
  • A: Well you can use it a basis, or start, but the A2 set briefs are different. Also I think you will need to include some theoretical perspective in your intention. For example, are you looking to challenge a particular dominant hegemony (postcolonialism, feminist critical thinking), are you looking to sell a product (audience theory), are you making a clear narrative, story and character (narrative theory), or an aesthetic, art project (postmodernism, semiotics) etc etc
  • Q: How do I write my statement of intent?
  • A: Write in continuous prose about 1) WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO & 2) WHY YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT & 3) HOW YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT. Write about the whole NEA set brief ie both productions.
  • Q: Will I get the same mark for A2 as I got for my AS production?
  • A: No. The expectations are much higher at A2, so the mark you got at AS would be lower at A2. Hopefully, when you look at your AS work you will see why it would not be good enough for A2.
  • Q: Do the three print adverts follow the house style of the magazine?
  • A: No. The advertising content is different from the editorial content. Both products follow the same register and tone, specifically aiming to address the same target audience. BUT they do not follow the same conventions of layout, design and language.
  • Q: Can we use studio lighting, lighting box (for photographing objects) etc?
  • A: Absolutely 100%!! This is the expectation. Everything (including images) should look brilliant in your production. If it does your production will be brilliant.
  • Q: Does the music have to be original / non-copyright?
  • A: Yes. All the material that you use has to be original, at times this may prove difficult, so for example, you may not own the copyright to a song, but you can always ask permission to use it.
  • Q: Is a DJ an original artist?
  • A: Yes. Make sure you look at some style model videos, as videos that promote DJ’s are often a bit different (postmodern).
  • Q: What is meant by audience engagement?
  • A: I think it is to do with getting your target audience on-line. So maybe playing an on line game, buying a device to get connected to the web, a virtual festival, an on- line competition, an advert for a social media platform, a subscription to a web group / service provider / on-line community . . . Something along those lines. What do you guys think?
  • Q: I don’t have Photoshop at home?
  • A: This is an issue as we were all getting pretty competent with this programme over the AS year. However, there is no specific requirement to use Photoshop, so you can use another photo editor and of course you can use other programmes to create your product.
  • Q: Can I use Premier at home?
  • A: Yes but you will find that you probably have an updated version of Premier at home, which means it will not be compatible with the version at school. So perhaps save your premier files at home in an older version, or just work on it at school.
  • Q: What you mean by style models?
  • A: Style models are real professional products that you are going to base your ideas around. They provide inspiration, ideas and details of what you need to include in your own product.
  • Q: Do the three style models refer to three different genres of magazine?
  • A: Yes, so in total you should load up a minimum of 9 images in response to your research task. Of course the more you look at . . the more ideas you will get. Please, also upload your research to the blog so that you can learn from others. Thank you.
  • Q: I was wondering if I take screenshots from a game and if that would be considered original images?
  • A: As ever there is the tricky area of original and found images. The clearest line is that you should make sure all your material is original. The next best option is to make sure that you manipulate any found images, so that they are transformed into something ‘new’ and ‘original’. The last option is not so good for you . . . using found images that are not yours. If you really need to do this, make sure it is not central to your work and if it is . . . well, I would think again.

Hope that helps 😀
