Noam Chomsky revolutionised the field of linguistics by treating language as a uniquely human, biologically based cognitive capacity.

The cognitive revolution was an intellectual movement that began in the 1950s as an interdisciplinary study of the mind and its processes.

new vs old media

refer to stories on website

use old vs new table and key words

“We decided these where social norms now, so we went for it”

To me this seems that they didn’t consider consequences or any negatives but only what favoured them as a company

“Could pose a threat to an individuals well being, freedom or even life”

Negatives of data sharing could have these impacts on the industries customers.

New vs old media

Adapt: Old media used to struggle to gather accurate data to help them decide what was of interest and selling their products. By adapting to new media online they can privately gather data by which stories have the most activity and view time to create more proffit.

Endless: Old media had an end which was the end of the book or page whereas new media can become endless with plug ins into new stories

Who really benefits from a digitally networked society? Big business or individuals? Refer to ‘loop theory’ and the ‘Dunbar number’

In my opinion business’ benefit massively in digital media because of their ability to gather data and information whereas with printed media exact details can’t be gathered. Companies use the loop theory to gather information and data and produce content that we have been previously interested into to create more profit. Consumers argue that we have endless escapism and freedom on the internet but according to the Dunbar the maximum relationships humans can have is 150 with an average of 5 or 6 so you could argue that we don’t gain as much compared to companies

The virtual revolution

The Network effect (Theodore Vale) : Becomes more valuable as more people join creating a stronger connection as you come into contact with more people creating more data with stronger pathways which lead onto more people becoming connected ever expanding a network. For example one person knows two others. the others know two others which multiply people using the network.

The loop theory (Norbert Weiner): predicting future behaviour from gathered data erecting an outcome

Dunbars number (150) (Robin Dunbar) :Dunbar’s number is a suggested cognitive limit to the number of people with whom one can maintain stable social relationships—relationships in which an individual knows who each person is and how each person relates to every other person.

1903-1918: The Thrill Becomes Story or The Hollywood Dream

According to Cousins, why did the hub of film production in the USA move from the East Coast of America to Hollywood?

To escape his control, and because of the ideal weather conditions and varied terrain, moviemakers began to arrive in Los Angeles to make their films. If agents from Edison’s company came out west to find and stop these filmmakers, adequate notice allowed for a quick escape to Mexico.

Which nation’s film industry does Cousin’s describe as “the best in the world” in the 1910’s and why?

Give an example of two films and two directors from this place and time cited by Cousin’s as remarkable.

Haxan: A hybrid of documentary and fiction, this silent film explores the history of witchcraft, demonology and satanism 1922: Sweeden

The phantom carridge: On New Year’s Eve, the driver of a ghostly carriage forces a drunken man (Victor Sjöström) to look back at his wasted life. 1921:sweeden

What was the name of the first film made by the Lumiere Brother and when was this?

1895; “Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory”

What is the “Phantom Ride”?

Phantom rides or panoramas were an early genre of film popular in Britain and the US at the end of the 19th century. Pre-dating true narrative, the films simply show the progress of a vehicle moving forwards, usually shot by strapping a cameraman to the front.

What was ground-breaking about the silent films “The Sick Kitten” and “Life of an American Fireman”?

“Life of an American Fireman” had the first cross cut showing indoors and outdoors looking from behind to in-front

“The sick kitten” had the first close up

What was the name of the first “film star” in Hollywood?

Marshall McLuhan: The Medium is the Message

Technological determinism is a reductionist theory that assumes that a society’s technology determines the development of its social structure and cultural values.

(1911–1980) was a Canadian philosopher.

For many the role of technology is actually the most defining aspect of Media, for example Marshall McLuhan proposed in 1964 that the Medium was the message, or as he deliberately titled his book ‘The Media is the Massage’.  In other words, the medium (the technology) is more significant than anything else in determining meaning ie over companies, organisations, governments, individuals, representations, texts etc etc

21 Young People Tell Us Why They Wore Second-Hand Clothing to the Climate Strike 2019

political, social, cultural and economic contexts:

During the climate strike in September 2019 there was protests about the global climate strike where world leaders met and listened to scientists and those passionate to make a difference in the world. The protesters all wore second hand clothing and the majority being teenagers of a young age to stand up to world leaders such as Donald Trump who don’t care about the environment.

Socially the younger generations are trying to stand up to the capitalist leaders as my generation attempts to make a statement that we will not be pushed over and that we care.
